Song Ji-hyo and Kim Jaejoong star in big screen comedy

It’s kind of an odd combo, but I suppose there’s comedy potential there. Kim Jaejoong (Protect the Boss) and Song Ji-hyo (Running Man, Kye Baek) have been paired together in an upcoming comedy film called The Jackal Is Coming, where they play killer and victim-to-be, except the killer’s not who you’d expect.
At first when I read the film’s description about a lady-killer, I thought it was killer-of-ladies, but no, Song Ji-hyo has been cast as a lady who kills. Thankfully her character’s terrible at her job, because otherwise we wouldn’t have a comedy on our hands. So the clumsy assassin kidnaps a famous singer (played by Kim Jaejoong) on commission, and attempts to kill him in really weird ways, while trying to avoid being caught by the cops. Okay, I already like “tries to kill him in weird ways,” because I’m picturing really ineffectual torture techniques, like death by chocopie.
I don’t know how a contract killer who can’t kill even gets jobs in the first place, but it should be really fun to see Song Ji-hyo in something that brings out more of her zany variety persona than her other roles have done. I haven’t seen a lot of Kim Jaejoong as an actor, but hopefully he can bring the funny. The two are represented by the same agency, so at least they have some familiarity, if the story takes a rom-com turn amidst the murder hijinks.
The Jackal Is Coming will be directed by Bae Hyung-joon (Boys Don’t Cry, Don’t Believe Her) and now that the cast has finished the script read, it’ll start shooting in May.

This sounds potentially hilarious. Jaejoong was pretty funny in Protect the Boss, but I'm curious to see Song Ji-Hyo be funny. The last time I saw her was as the wallflower ballerina in Goong (yeesh, looong time ago).

YEh, i agree, but I think she has potential because runningman has brought out her side of funny, and actually, I can totally see her runningman persona used in this upcoming movie, except she would have to be dumb XD

Well, there is always Ji-hyo's "blank" expression.
Seems that Ji-hyo's popularity on RM has really raised her profile and likely has helped her when it comes to getting bigger film roles.

What? No one watched Crime Squad? Even though it wasn't a romcom, her character was the cute plucky type so I think she'll be able to bring the funny in this movie.

Running Man's brought out her lively side. When I first saw her in it, I couldn't believe it is the same Song Ji-hyo in Goong (that role wasn't written that well anyways). Jaejoong was funny in PTB mostly because he sort of played it straight and because of the good rapport and chemistry he had with Ji Sung. Luckily this role seems to fit him. He gets to play a singer. And I'm guessing he may play the straight man to Song Ji-hyo's zany character. And he can finally make appropriate use of his model-walk, which I felt was out of place in PTB.

One thing i don't understand: Who would want to kill Jaejoong? Such a cutie pie? And a girl on top of that... Wait, crazy fangirls can kill you, i'm sure. Is this a way for him to exorcise his relationship with sasaeng fans? Like what Daesung did with his Hadès character in What's up?
As always, this can be ultra fun or absolutely awkward, depending on the script.

Jaejoong was surprisingly hilarious in Protect the Boss and I love Song Jihyo from Running Man! (Still in mourning from the break up of the Monday Couple.) This is a definite must watch on my list.

yeah jaejoong's good looking and all...but hes sorta still awkward on screen. i remember watching protect the boss and i felt like he was the weakest link when it came to the four main characters...actually i thought he was the weakest actor among all the actors in that drama...i hope hes been able to improve upon his acting skills. I just remember feeling like his body positioning and facial expressions were just so contrived and awkward. and also, whenever romantic scenes came on, i feel like he was trying to film a music video when what was needed from him was for him to just..act. lol does that even make sense? really excited to see song ji hyo though! i think she has an awesome sense of comedic timing

i totally agree with you about jaejoong. I know a lot of people praised him for his acting chop in PTB, but I thought he was soooo stiff. Out of all the four main characters, I felt like he was the only one who was actively trying to "act" while the other three just seemed natural in their roles.

I must be in the minority then......
By the second half of the drama I was getting bored of the Jisung storyline because it was so cliche and redundant. I was actually enjoying the Namu pairing and their scene time. I do admit that in the first couple of episodes Muwon did act really awkward but I think he improved by episode.

yeah i agree he improved a lot over the course of the drama and it was noticeable with each week, but....i still think he had a long way to go by the end of the ptb. i just hope hes improved since then enough that he can actually act well in this upcoming movie. and i adored the namu couple! they were soooo cute! but them looking cute together does not equate to jaejoong being a good actor...

Kind of side-eyeing you. It's like comparing a rookie actor to professional actors. Yes, Jaejoong has been in the industry a long time, but not as an actor.
1. This is first long screen time in Korea. In comparison all the other actors in the drama have acted in more than one.
2. Of course his acting is going to be compared...but I am glad he chose this role....than a typical 'idol-lead-role' because he did learn a lot from his sunbaes
3. It is kind of funny that you are basing all his future work on the first role he has had as an actor. Most rookies even get second chances....but idols 'can't'. And he wasn't that horrible. You can see a significant improvement from the first episode (where his acting was cringe-worthy) to the last (where people who did not know him wanted him on the screen more).
I personally don't base a works potential JUST on actors ability. For all I know the writer and producer could be amazing. I have watched many drama's....and know that MANY times drama's that don't deserve it get a lot of attention and love. I will wait for the actual movie to come out to judge its worth.

PTB wasn't Jaejoong's first role; he was in Heaven's Postman and the j-drama Sunao ni Narenakute before that.
Can't speak for Heaven's Postman, but he was definitely awkward in Sunao and it kind of carried over into PTB. I think he hits all the emotional scenes, but comedy, ehh, we'll see.

I loved Heaven's Postman, but it was more about the story and the look than the acting. The whole thing was filmed a bit 'off' - it had a kind of dreamlike quality, but parts of it were also sort of abrupt? It was my first time seeing him act, so I thought it was the movie and not necessarily him. And then in PTB he WAS funny, but he's also awkward and stiff, and I came away from that feeling like Jaejoong is kind of awkward in REAL life, which actually makes him more likeable to me.
So I guess I can't really tell if he's a terrible actor/inexperienced actor/awkward goober person. But I don't mind it when I watch him, and that isn't because I'm drooling like a fan girl - he's pretty but not my taste at all - so I guess it doesn't matter to me. I'll have the movie and Towel Slip Dr. Jin to add to my databank for comparison soon enough!

he was "suffering" a bit filming HP. (i went to korea at that time and managed to see a few filming scenes). it was almost in the middle of their album promo so juggling it with filming, then every now and then flying to japan was quite hard. plus, he was really awkward. he's known as the King of NG... but not the funny kind. it was almost annoying and he was so apologetic all the time, knowing he's inconveniencing the staff and HHJ. :(
Jae did good in Sunao, no matter what people say. he had to translate the kanji script into hiragana/katakana, then would have to look up some words in a dictionary just to get the feel of the words/or ask people the meaning. i thought he was able to portray his Doctor character well.

@danni wow...I thought his best role so far was SNN. This is the first I've heard of this. Can you tell me what scene(s) you thought he was awkward in?
I thought he did an amazing job with his role in the fact that I constantly wanted to pull him out of the screen shake or slap some sense into him so he would leave Haru.
I meant it was his first role in a Korean drama. He has always been more comfortable in Japan than Korea. Also, with HP I think his acting was fine.....his biggest flaw was his voice lacking any emotion.

Idol status has nothing to do with acting skills. Some people are naturally gifted, and some manage to do a good job by taking lessons. Micky Yoochun is doing a great job with Rooftop Prince, Kim Hyung-joon did a great job in Glowing She recently. T.O.P is also a promising one, if he ever decides to chose that path.
Plus don't forget that the most important rule is: Casting. You can have a limited range of acting, but if you match what the character needs, bingo.

I'm loving Yoochun in Rooftop Prince, he has improved a lot.
Kim Hyung Joon was great in Glowing She. It's kind of sad that he didn't get as much exposure because it was a cable drama.

That's silly. Idols should act if they can or are willing to learn, why should that exclude them? First timers should still go through the daily/sitcom/weekend family dramas first though, unless they are really good.

1. im sorry but if youre a rookie then you usually build up your resume and skill by acting in smaller roles and then working up to become a good enough actor to star alongside a well established actress. its obvious that his background as an idol is giving him a rather unfair advantage.
2. im glad too that hes getting roles but...i would like him to be able to handle the roles that hes getting.
3. im not sure what is funny about me giving my honest opinion of what i thought about his acting. im not being malicious. i dont particularly like or dislike him but i am pointing out that he has some things he needs to work on and improve his acting skills. i just hope that he can carry the movie since he's the main character this time and not a second lead. people are going to judge him as an actor since that's what hes setting out to do in this movie, right? also, sometimes improvement is good but it can also not be enough. hes shown improvement week by week with ptb but i think that he still had a while to go by the end of it. i just didnt expect him to nab a leading role in a movie so quickly. but i hope he does well or else im the one that's gonna have a bad time sitting through a movie i dont like.

Adding on.....I agree though that compared to the (professional) actors he did seem to be acting than appearing natural most of his role.
But, still by the end the script-writer/producer had me bored with Jisung's storyline whereas I was enjoying the Namu pairing.

the problem with him... he's still very much conscious of the camera. it was engraved in him during his training days to "always" look good in front of the camera - a joke his [former] members would often mention about him.

Thats right! yes! you just explained what i was trying to get at! thats exactly how i felt while i was watching his acting. even when he was in the midst of getting his hair pulled, i could see jisung completely get into it and look convincing but jaejoong still just looking awkward and looking a bit too goodlooking for someone who's getting dragged around on the floor. i like his storyline with wang jihye but i felt like that was more good writing and chemistry between the two and not necessarily good acting from jaejoong (i firmly hold the view that good acting and chemistry between leads is not mutually inclusive)

I can see your point. I am a huge fan (of him as a singer), and I do think Jaejoong has potential as an actor, but... he still is somewhat awkward in front of the camera. It partly has to do with what gala mentioned because singers and actors view the camera so differently. Gagmen see it differently as well since all three jobs have such different roles in front of a camera. It also has to do with him as a person. Jaejoong is known for being 4D and sometimes kind of odd/ awkward. XD He's hilarious and witty because of it, but I could see how it could take away from his acting.
That being said, I've seen improvement in his acting, and I hope that he starts to embrace it and improve more. ^^

umm.. well, if you compared his acting with the other 3, ofc he would be the most weakest of the 4. JiSung, Choi Kang hee n Wang Ji Hye are proffesional actor n actresses. esp JiSung. so, i think it wont be fair to comparing him (who still a rookie in Kdrama). yes, he acted in SNN n HP. but HP was a film n from 2009. SNN was Jdrama and in 2010.
abt HP, even Jae Himself said he wished he could be better. he wasnt really satisfied with it. he shoot the drama during his mirotic days n Japan promo. i even remember when they have to perform at MKMF 2008, Jae looked deadly tired since he was in the middle of shooting n have to go back to practise n perform for MKMF (it was 1 or 2 am in the morning) and the day after MKMF he must go back to shoot.
and actually i think he quite good in SNN. yes, he seems awkward, but Doctor character was an awkward South Korean with low ability to speak Japanese n have a 'weak' mentality. well, in Japan he won Best Supporrting ROle award in Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix for SNN =)
and i do agree he still awkward in PTB. but he get better in the later eps. and he himself said (when asked why he took another 2nd lead eventho he was offered many lead roles) that he still want to learn. so lets just hope he get better. esp since he just do 1 kdrama so far. kinda too early to judged his acting now =)

THEY hire C-JES not the other way around. AKA C-JES works FOR them, not they work for C-JES. They're not gonna make the same mistake twice with agencies and what not.

I'm sorta looking forward to this, just to see how Jaejoong is developing as an actor.
It's a different role than what he's done before (Heaven's Postman, Sunao ni Narenakute, Protect the Boss) and it'll probably good for him to stretch himself in that way.
I hope it'll be a well-directed film and that he'll be working with people who can help him realise that acting potential that is there.

Yay! Song Ji Hyo! I've only really seen her in Running Man (aside from Goong, which I watched before I knew who she was) since her other projects aren't really my cup of tea.

Yes, Junsu does a good job in acting for his MVs - as long as he's dancing and singing, he's all power and charm.
It's obvious that straight acting isn't going to be his 'thing' - typified by that one scene in SoaW with Kim Sun-ah where he's talking to her at the restaurant table. It was just painful to watch.
And yet, shallow me, I could watch his 'Intoxication' MV endlessly.

Yup, Junsu is a horrible actor - have you seen the longer version of the In Heaven MV? *cringe* So. Bad. I'm just happy that he's sticking to what he's good at, which is giving his audience goosebumps at the sheer emotion in his singing in his musicals. :D
That said, I also doubt Jaejoong's ability to do comedy - he just seems so self-conscious and awkward when he's acting, and if he's acting in a comedy such as this one, I think he's going to need to get rid of that I-must-look-pretty thing that he's suffering from. One of the reasons why Yoochun is so funny in RTP atm for me is because he's not afraid to look ridiculous in front of the camera. But who knows, maybe JJ will surprise me.

I think its because Yoochun has always come across as being very secure in himself
I dont really understand the i must look pretty thing (IDK what you'r referring to) but i think with mu won i sometimes saw flashes of jaejoong rather than mu won which was my biggest issue. i just didnt buy him as a drama character
i think another issue is that Jaejoong picked a drama character that was not too far removed from his idol image
whereas Lee Sun Joon is the polar opposite of yoochuns real life persona so we were able to make the idol/actor distinction very clearly from the beginning.
I think the time slip Jin character will work well for JJ, and i hope he will be as smart as Yoochun when picking roles (Jaejoong does have potential; i thought he was good in his Japanese drama)
as for JunSu (bless him); He has more musical talent in his pinky than most mediocre idols have in their entire body but i dont think on screen acting is his thing
I would trade an arm to see him perform live though.

Junsu himself said that he isnt really interested acting in drama. at least for now. he feel uncomfortable doing it in SOAW. as for now he prefer musical =)

I think this pairing has the potential for comedy couple gold.
One big advantage for them is that they've all worked together (JYJ & Ji-hyo) on several past projects.
She's friends with Yoochun, Junsu and Jaejoong and the BTS footage always shows them goofing around with each other, so the comfort level is certainly there - and that negates the initial awkwardness between lead actors on a new project.
Jaejoong's acting has certainly taken some justified hits in the past from critics, but he's consistently upping his game with each new acting job - he did a fine job in PtB.
I also have no doubts that Song Ji-hyo is going to bring the twisted funny to her assassin role - in a weird way, that's what she does every week in Running Man. Girl is totally ruthless and has a terrific sense of humor.

I loved him in Protect the Boss and I'm happy to see him in a comedy because when I watched him in a bunch of the behind the band scenes he always seemed like the guy who was always goofing around and cracking jokes lol.

I'm picturing something as wacky as this scene from an old book series, Bunnicula. The cat is trying to kill the vampire rabbit by pounding a sirloin steak on the rabbit's chest. (get it? a "steak" through the heart? so stupid - lol)

kyaaa.this is a great news for me.. jaejoong is a funny man if you saw him in variety shows well if he is not thnking or trying too hard. i guess that when people started to see him awkward and stiff.. but i cant wait for him to be a comical person coz he is indeed a 4d person like kim hyun joong. jae joong oppa I miss you..

I love Jaejoong like mad as singer, but I dislike him like hell as actor. Simply put, HE. CAN. NOT. ACT despite the fact that he sings like an angel to me. My dearest angel, why kill me with your awkward-zombie-kind-of-acting again and again? Arrrggg...

Jumong and Gyebaek..she did well..
but the character doesn't buy me..
especially on Gyebaek, her character not well written
ahh, i love her on crime squad..

as a singer..Jaejoong will be the best.. I am glad that Jaejoong accept this movie. Still impressed with Postman to Heaven.
This movie story line seems interesting and humorous, cant wait to see it on big screen..Jaejoong ah, Fighting...

Jaejoon has ever complained himself about his acting in Postman to Heaven and say sorry to the main actress because at that time he focused in singing, had many concert and activities, had not time to practice the line. DBSK had very busy schedule by SM Entertainment.

First saw Song Jihyo in Goong and though acting may be average then I did thought she has the X-factor and somehow I can remember her expression from the show till now. I thought she did pretty well in Frozen Flowers. Running Man of course brought out a delightful side of hers that not many have realized. And I recall thinking that she would definitely have the talent for greater things and more varied roles.
Jaejoong is probably still a little stiff in front of cameras but that can totally work in his favor for a comedy.
An appealing actress to me and a flower boy that caught my eyes many years back. Bet ya I'll watch this.

omfg dream come true!!! ever since ji hyo joined CJES, i've always wonder if they'll ever have JYJ + JiHyo do a drama together and it came true!!
i hafta say, CJES is really making a big break these 2 years with dramas, not just JiHyo and JYJ but their other artists are also doing dramas (KPOP SURVIVAL)
