Election day preemptions for Rooftop, King?
by girlfriday
Okay, remember… don’t shoot the messenger… So there are elections this week on Wednesday, which means preemptions for the Wednesday-Thursday dramas. The thing that’s hard to pin down is the official word, since so far it’s mostly been speculation online about what each broadcaster will do. As far as official news goes: Rooftop Prince will be preempted and air Episode 7 on Thursday. The King 2 Hearts is planning (or trying) to keep its original schedule but hasn’t given their official statement, and Equator Man will stick to its original schedule.
There’s also a lot of speculation about how ratings will shake out now that Rooftop (12.5%) has turned the tables on King (12.1%) and Equator (10.2%) has joined the double-digit party, only to have the elections turn everything around again. But I feel like that’s moot until we see how things settle down next week once things get back to normal. Freak ratings will just be freak ratings.
Now the things that aren’t official: Rooftop Prince might air both Episodes 7 and 8 back-to-back on Thursday. Maybe. King might end up doing the same. So what that means is, prepare yourselves for a possible princeless Wednesday, and then brace yourselves for a royal clusterfuck on Thursday. We will recap accordingly, even if it requires bending the rules of space and time. (But in all seriousness, we’re not machines, so please stock up on calming herbs and breathing exercises to get you through this difficult time.)
It’s a good thing we stocked up on soju sundaes. Who needs energy drinks when you’ve got whipped cream for the sugar rush and soju to stave off the impending bout of insanity?

There MUST be a reason it's called King 2Hearts and not Prince 2Hearts!!! D:
All three shows are shaping up as excellent competition for each other. As long as the writing doesn't suffer in some silly effort to wring a few ratings from another really great show's audience, I'm good.

As far as I know, MBC will air back-to-back TK2H episode 7 & 8 on Thursday (it's already on their tv schedule). And same goes with SBS. After I heard about this, my initial reaction was: TK2H & RTP subbers & recappers are going to have a hell day on Friday. So everyone, please be patient, okay? =)
This is the first time I don't really care about the ratings as finally we have 3 great dramas broadcast at the same time.

Just a question... Is election day also a nation-wide public holiday for South Koreans?
And why of all days... Wednesday? It's like, Monday: work, Tuesday: work and then BAM, Wednesday: VOTE.
Why not on Sunday so that people can think through this vote on Saturday?? (Lee JaeKang, your Royal Highness, why'd you give your politics such a weird schedule?)
Any South Koreans knowledgeable on this topic?? Thanks!

These are for Parliamentary Elections (just like voting for our Senators here in the U.S.), and are held every four years on the second Wednesday of April since sometime in the early 1990s. A public holiday as well -- no work, school, banks or mail delivery, and stores have the option of staying open or not (the smaller ones will close; the big retail operations will not). The same legislative block that are going through elections right now also voted to have them later in the spring so as to not conflict with Seollal (Lunar New Year) festivities. So I guess you can blame them. ;)
It's going to be the same situation with the 4th of July this year -- two days of work, and then come to a screeching halt for a day off on Wednesday, then back to the grind again (unless one is fortunate enough to take off the two days before or after). Kinda puts a serious crimp into any barbeque plans, that's for sure!
I find the whole political process fascinating -- but we should be thankful American politicians don't campaign riding through neighborhoods with loud bullhorns blaring day in and out! For those Korean Nationals currently living abroad, I hope you've made your vote count this year!! And for our own DB Recap Gurus, I hope you enjoy the few hours of freedom this delay brings. You've been working so hard the last several months, you need it!! :)

Haha... I think i need to clear something up. I'm not American... So I have no idea what the American citizen has to/does not endure during elections...
But thank you for your detailed explanation!
@red: i checked the internet. It says that voting is NOT compulsory for South Koreans. According to Wikipedia, total turnout in the 2008 elections was just 46.0% (o_O).

That's still probably better than an American election turnout in most cases, especially at the city level.
Cherkell - I'm happy with the Wednesday Independence Day, mostly because, since I work for the police department, I get double pay that day!! Which will pay for the barbeque that weekend. ;-)

A day of rest is nice now and then, especially when the next day you can sit, gorge and be transported to a rapturously funny place. That being said, showing maturity here, at one time they did drive the larger cities of the U.S. with very large electric bull horns on the top of panel trucks. Very fuzzily remember them, and have seen them in the older moves I'm so fond of.

Bars are closed? Hm, never saw that happen, I think it's business as usual everywhere on election days in the U.S. But I just googled about it, and it seems it depends on the state, while others did used to have that law but don't anymore.

I remember when I was growing up in Chicago, alcohol sales were banned and the bars were always closed on an Election Day up until the polls closed at 7 PM. That especially used to suck big time when an election day fell on the same day as Saint Patrick's Day... and that's why the (primarily Irish) aldermanic council eventually struck down the law. ;)
My friends in Daejeon dread the general elections; it's worse for them this year with a new baby and those candidate trucks going up and down their neighborhood during the day. No one is able to nap or get around comfortably through the crowds of frenzied pollsters. At least with the insane way politicking goes on here in the States, we can turn off our televisions if the advertisements get to be too much to bear. Could you imagine the carnage if candidates here started adopting the same campaigning methods as those utilized in Japan and Korea? Aigoo...

Dear recappers, thank you for your hardwork.
Btw, if you add up all 3 ratings, it's only 34.8% total.

in different timeslots each one of these dramas have the potential to be #no.1
i dont understand why people love TMETS
Is it the anticipation of a second story from the writer of SKKS?
Anticipation of KSH and HGI's comeback drama
Need to fill the "epic romance drama" hole left by Princess Man?
The relative crappiness of the shows Wild Romance and Take Care of Us Captain?
Because most of the viewership is female?
What was it :/
i really want to know why such an inconsistent show became a blockbuster

I agree with you....Moon/Sun started out with a bang i only watched the 2 eps when the child actors were leaving....then I followed it up with reading the recaps and after a couple of weeks I stopped doing that as well!!
I've heard really good things about Equator Man....was avidly following RTP but have yet to watch the last episodes!! The villains are black in their characterization and this last week TK2H totally had my attention!! I am saddened that the plot is not 'doing it' for the domestic audience. Someone on the Ep 6 recap thread mentioned that the crew was aware of this right off the bat and LSG told during the press conference that they'll be sticking with the original storyline despite the ratings.
Even the combined powers of HJW and LSG is unable to pull in the ratings....prior to this show LSG's shows did really well!! TK2H ratings=what a disappointment!! :( I wonder how the domestic audience'll react when the King will be murdered!! oyyyy!! This is the most I've thought abt ratings!!

I actually dropped TMTETS after episode 11, and just reading the recaps to fill in what's going on with the storyline.
But I finished watching all 20 episodes of Take Care of Us, Captain. It's a great drama but too bad many viewers dislike the main lead actress, which probably one of the reason why they didn't watch Captain.
After reading LSGi message to his fans that this time he's really enjoying filming the drama and not really think about the end results (ratings), I kind of predict that TK2H is a risky project (not risky in terms of acting, chemistry, delivery etc), but risky in terms of sensitive issues of NK-SK storyline. I think maybe this was the reason why many top actors declined to take part on this drama project, so kudos to Lee Seung Gi, Ha Ji Won, Jo Jung Suk, Lee Yoon Ji and all other casts & crew who bravely tackle this project.
TK2H is not everyone's cup-of-tea drama even though it has the power of LSGi and HJW as well as great storyline, music, movie-quality cinematography and solid acting across the board. So that's why I don't really care about the ratings because I really enjoy TK2H.

I dont think K2H was that much of a risky project
TK2H started off with a huge advantage compared to the other shows
40% lead in from TMETS (come on they got like a 17% premiere )
big budget
Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won
Did i mention Ha! Ji! Won!?
So whilst the subject matter of K2H is certainly risky K2H was positioned to be no.1 from the beginning so more than the ratings itself it is the decline of ratings that is concerning rather than the growth of the other shows

^ but that cannot be the sole reason for rating
I've seen this argument brought up two weeks before (even before Rooftop prince took no.1 and Equator man broke 10%)
if the dramas ratings declined simply because the airtime was shorter
the ratings would initially drop but stay constant
What we are seeing is a gradual decline week by week
I have heard that theory
and South Koreans are not happy with dramas that deal with reunification
and also excessive product placement (dunkin donuts')
Saima
April 9, 2012 at 12:01 PM
I think us int'l viewers are concerned about them BEING FORCED to change up the story line/scenes to improve the ratings!!
ccinta
April 9, 2012 at 5:29 PM
I mean risky project in terms of reunification (NK-SK) storyline. They got a decent 16% premiere rating and it declined as the domestic viewers are not happy with this kind of storyline. It's not helping that the election is coming up and the NK missile will be launched really soon. And domestic viewers are not used with black comedy drama.
All 3 dramas started at the same time, so I don't think TK2H has the huge advantage here. People can easily choose whichever drama (broadcasting station) they wanted to watch after TMTETS ended.
In the past, many A list actors dramas failed in ratings; been there so many times. So HJW doesn't guarantee high ratings. In this case, the storyline is actually great, but many domestic viewers are really sensitive about it.
As international viewers, I'm in love with TK2H. It's a very high quality drama, it's fiction yes, but it triggers me to research more about NK-SK relationship.

April 9, 2012 at 6:49 AM
This got me wondering as well. The summed up ratings for the 3 dramas are quite low. What's pulling the rest of the numbers from the dramas? Or is it possible that the rest of Korea are turning off their televisions while the 3 dramas are airing?
I hope the ratings won't affect the quality of the three dramas.
For the subbers and recappers, good luck haha. I hope you won't stress yourselves so much just to feed us kdrama watchers our drama-fix. XD

I noticed the trend is that the huge dramas start off with lower ratings (so that the combined numbers of all dramas are much lower), then by the time it gets to near the halfway point, the ratings for one drama will be very high (like where the heck did all these additional viewers come from) while the other dramas stay with their lower consistent ratings. I don't think Moon/Sun got into the 30% ratings until episode 9 or 10. So we should see what happens by the time these three dramas get to around the same point.

I totally agree with ccinta's view on TK2H being a risky project. I don't live in Korea so watching TK2H is like watching any other korean dramas. It's so interesting and addicting watching the actors tackle this kind of drama which encompasses almost everything: romance, politics, drama, suspense etc. It's very well portrayed and has made me an instant Lee Seung Gi fan with his over-flowing charisma.
TK2H is surprisingly a very very good drama ( I actually like this more than RTP now) but unfortunately I think this is the sort of drama Korean people feel very sensitive about and it might not suit all ages, even though they have Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won :(
Having said that, I think it's such an awesome drama to watch for pure enjoyment and not pin it against anything happening in the real world. It's such a great fiction story and I can't seem to get over it. Thursday is such a long way away!

I concur. Love knows no boundaries. To me and many other overseas audience, TK2H is pure fiction to be enjoyed -- a modern-day romantic tale of Prince Charming getting swept off his feet while trying to sweep a girl off her feet -- of course, amid suspense that is created by a maniacal character who thinks he is king of the world. That's all.

As for the rating, I think we have to add the Equator Man and Love Rain too.
I think there were not much rating for other drama during the Moon Sun airing. I do not like other dramas at that time . I did watch Captain. Good drama but I careless about the lead actress. I love Dong Wook but I hate Wild Romance.
Well, different viewpoint.

I just want to say I really appreciate how much effort you girls put into this blog. You could always just say recaps will be a day/two days late, and no one would have any right to complain.
Anyway, I have no idea how you do it, but thank you!

Has this site ever had 5 airing episodes to recap in one night before?
Historical!
The last thing you need to worry about is getting the recaps to us "on time." What does that mean to us anyway?
It is hard enough to gather the facts and comment on them the perfect way you do for ONE show.
On the other hand, this royal clusterfuck won't happen again for many many suns, it'll be fun to see how it all shakes out.
I especially can't wait for the infrequent guests who complain that it wasn't fast enough.
That always cracks me up.
Meanwhile I am actually watching Shining Inheritance to fill my no-K2H time. I am actually wanting to strangle Jung and her mom, while stabbing Moon Chae Won's mom.
Thanks for giving me something to do while they talk about whatever the hell they talk about and I don't listen anyway.
LSG has come a long way, hasn't he?

You got me there alright, Jomo.
I do too whatever airing in my local TV channels, from Sassy girl Chun Yang, Lie to me, Full House to a thousand days promise, though I haven't watched the last one.
Still, I think I wud be hanging dry for RTP ep.7 as I marathoned 1-6 during last long weekend...or maybe I can marathon K2H while waiting for the recaps?? Ehmmm...
Anyway, am really grateful for DB n all the commenters, you all have helped improved my infatuation to k-dramas..

Hey me too - rewatching Shining Inheritance and holding off eps of TK2H. LSG has come a long way but the hair still looks the same! While I really enjoyed SI back then, watching it again makes me roll my eyes at all the OTT makjang elements. And for some weird reason, I keep thinking HHJ's hair looks dry, brittle and unhealthy.

Love the pics!
I guess I'll just have to marathon episodes of Rooftop to get my much needed fix...or do math. I'm leaning more towards the former.

Are soju sundaes a real thing? I'm not much of a drinker (I know, I'm a bit...weird.) but this sounds like a really good idea.

To keep us busy waiting, how about a recipe contest where the ingredients have to be soju and sundae stuff?
It's always good when at first the idea makes you shudder.
It would be named the Royal Clusterfuck, of course!

Not weird.
Give me the choice between juice and liquor (any), I'm always going to go for juice.
Can't remember the last time I drank actually (although I remember the last time I bought some wine for an event because they carded me :-))
That said, I will have to try the soju + whipping cream combo because of Rooftop Prince at some point...

I seriously LOVE all three: K2H, RTP, AND EQUATOR MAN.
Equator Man is seriously awesome, and I think some of us get side-tracked from all the lee seung gi and yoochun that we forget about it. It's ratings are climbing up b/c it's amazing! I can't wait to watch the next episodes!

It is amazing! I'm watching Equator Man and Rooftop Prince and dropped K2H after ep 2. IMO Rooftop Prince is just ok, I watch it to kill time but I'm addicted to Equator Man, it's so underrated!

I love RTP... though there are parts I hate. Se-na, and the whole lot of the rich family.
Park-ha and her little Joseon boys family is what's so loveable about that drama.
But darn, that's a lot of praise you are heaping on Equator Man! Now I feel like I am missing out on something (really wasn't paying much attention to it).

It's a shame that all three of the dramas are battling for ratings because they're all quality dramas. T_T Though I guess we all have different preferences. I personally like all three.

Back to Back? T.T okay well at least I won't have to wait when I watch one, although that's half the fun. I will also just have to wait one more day. It's okay I guess because on wednesday I don't have a free hour but thursdays I do XD
Rooftop prince just doesn't seem in any way interesting to me but King 2 Hearts... that is just ruthless

I want to say similar thing, but for TK2H, I don't mind if RTP recap was delaying :p *poke playfully* peace sign* No offense please*
I just hope everybody here understand that GF & DB need rest too, and seriously, we, viewers must do not mind in case they delayed the recaps due to their health (or rest) :)
