Arang gets her quirky sidekick

So we’ve got the leads for summer’s fusion sageuk mystery drama Arang and the Magistrate (that would be Shin Mina and Lee Jun-ki), and also the villain (Yeon Woo-jin), so now it’s time for second leads and sidekicks.
Hwang Bora is the latest to join the production, and takes up the role of Shin Mina’s psychic sidekick. In this case, that’s a pivotal role (unlike, say, useless shaman sidekicks such as in Dream High 2—I’m still trying to figure out what the point of that was) since our heroine happens to be dead. Shin Mina plays Arang, a young woman who is killed whose ghost appears before the magistrate (Lee Jun-ki) and asks him to solve her murder.
Hwang Bora is a shaman with questionable powers (ha—the description of her skills reads, “You can’t say she has powers, but you can’t say she doesn’t have them either”), who ends up assisting Arang. I’ve seen Hwang in a number of projects and she always seems to play the quirky sidekick character, so I can see her fitting right in. Most recently she was in Dangerous Women and Love Rain, but for some reason she’s still in my memory most as Lee Da-hae’s flighty friend in My Girl. Other credits: Love & Marriage, Smile Mom, Petty Romance, Road No. 1.
The shaman description does makes me wonder at the tone of Arang; I’d presumed that the adaptation of the famous folktale would be a mystery-thriller type of fusion drama, like summer sageuks tend to be (summer brings chilling horror to cool the heat, or so goes the theory), but perhaps there’ll be a comic thread in there as well. Hm, so will this be more like Gumiho: Fox Child, or My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho?
Arang and the Magistrate begins filming in May, and will premiere in July.

nice, i like hwang bora, she'd make a great pair with shin mina. though i don't remember seeing hwang bora in love & marriage... must have missed her somehow.

God, I really hope this is another "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho", because "Gumiho: Fox's Child" was heavy as well as terrible on the gumiho=evil woman metaphor.
Still, even if it's melo I'll tune in for Shin Mina and Lee Jun-ki.

I am not Korean, so I do not know this folktale, but I am really intrigued by this show. At first, I thought it was going to be a spoof of The King and I, but then I read the description, and got really excited. I LOVE stories with ghosts as a central character! So, I'm really excited by this show, and can't wait!

They said Joongi Oppa would has a bad tempered profil, kekeke.... maybe he would always shout out to shin min ah eachtime she appears in front of him with a super cute expression, ke ke ke...
