So Ji-sub’s return to dramaland?

Perhaps there’s something in the water, but 2012 seems to be the year for film actors to return to television. And So Ji-sub might be next, if they can wrangle Mr. Broodypants for the part. I got all excited over the drama’s title — Ghost — thinking of course that it’d be a supernatural story (because who doesn’t like a broody undead guy?) but alas, it’s a misdirect. The drama, from the writer-director team behind last year’s hit forensic drama Sign, is about a cyber investigation team. But! Broody undead guy! Way more interesting than crack analyst!

I’m curious as to how they plan to make a cyber crime division dramatically engaging, but I suppose if they follow Sign‘s model then we’ll have some cops and prosecutors running about to keep the action going. I can foresee the same setup, just trading digital forensics for the more traditional dead-body kind, though really, blood and guts are a little more gripping than encryption algorithms. I dunno. They all look like Matrix-screensavers to me.

The trick is really to make the crimes interesting, in which case the techie stuff is just a vehicle for the hero to be a genius or whatever (’cause you KNOW he’ll be one). People loved Sign (it was a mid-twenties ratings leader) so I’m sure they’ll pull off another crack forensic procedural. It’s been two years since So Ji-sub’s last drama, Road No. 1, which… I can’t remember, because I paid to have it scrubbed from my brain. There were some side effects, but it was worth it… I think? I can’t remember.

Ghost will follow Rooftop Prince on SBS, premiering sometime in May.

That's what I thought first too, haha. But I know that in the older machines that were painstakingly coded by hand, some programmers would write in bits of useless code that would pop up only with unique queries, hence 'ghost code'.

I have an idea! What if they find a clue in an old bit of ghost code? Written by a desperate programmer concealing a hint in the way he knew best...

That would be epic. Make it a hint that unravels a full on conspiracy theory and and AND perhaps it triggers a countdown of some sort to an event that will occur in 24 hours but the main characters don't know what that would be so they run around following the breadcrumbs trail left for them. But oh NO! Every hour they have to enter a different code that prevents the "event" from occurring prematurely. So it's find the codes, unravel the mystery, and prevent an event that may likely be the APOCALYPSE! GASP!

Hahaha. Yeah I'm so bored right now.

Seriously, i would like that story. A good cyber thriller is always captivating, and with all that has been invented those last years (like tablets, supersmartphones...) there is a lot of possibilities. Product placement anyone?
And So Ji Sub. Miam!

The follow on to Ahjussi (minus the gore) - he gets out of prison and raises the little girl, and it's all lighthearted and fun until she gets a brain tumor (because it's KDrama and she has to, or he has to) but in this one, whoever gets sick will be cured. So it ends happy, and Binnie gets to marry the pretty neurosurgeon who has a very cold exterior (but a warm heart) because she feels inferior, coming from the country and not the city.

I find So Ji Sub a tad puzzling. There was an article over at Soompi earlier today that featured a magazine about SJS - created by the man himself. All SJS, all the time. The guy sure doesn't have any problems showing his ego.

Perhaps I find it puzzling because of the Korean penchant for modesty at all costs, and the SJS glossy is the total antithesis of modesty. In the days of yore, Mad Magazine used to do fake-up mags extolling whoever their intended target of the month was - it was tongue-in-cheek humor. I honestly had that same reaction seeing the cover of SJS, extolling his own limitless virtues.

I really like his acting, and he's been choosing good productions - but this magazine thing really showed another side to him and it sure wasn't a self-effacing one.

So Ji-sub self-effacing? Keh. That's like saying Uhm Tae-woong is good at sports.

This is So Ji-sub: Oh I look pretty here, wanna see? Oh no, wait, this one's better. Oh, here, in this one, I look introspective. Oh see, but in THIS one, I look poetic. See the difference?

He cannot act. Sometimes he gets lucky and the role works for what he does, and I won't deny that there are times when he's pretty...but he ain't no SSH or Won Bin or half a dozen (no, a dozen) others I could name.

Still, I'll watch this. I will wonder why the whole time, but I'll do it. So far, I've only LOVED him in Always and Rough Cut. Everything else just puzzled me.

0

He cannoy act? Being a nit harsh, no?

He is good at emotional stuff, his eyes show it all, many actors can't do it with they eyes.

But I have to say his acting is limited because he only does melodramatic dramas, hard to see him doing different and new stuff. But he is good at his emo acting.

And I think Won Bin is overrated. WB looking to the computeR: Looking hot, then he stares more at it: looking hot but aside this what more he can show?

SJS never tried this kind of genre so how you know he will act like this? From what I know he does looks sad in his dramas because, hello they are melo and sad characters.

@ Lizzie--Won Bin isn't just a handsome though. I've watched almost everything he's in. He can do dramatic AND funny and he's very very good at what he does. And I always like that he doesn't choose to play any "pretty guy" roles. I mean it's not is fault he's hot, haha--you gotta blame his parents for that. So I don't think it's fair to say he is overrated. I think all the attention is well deserved.

@JoAnne--So Ji Sub is kinda conceited though, lol. I think at the press conference for Always someone asked him what his favorite scene was and he replied the one where he's working out. HAHAHAHA! Too funny. But he should branch out more. Doesn't it get weepy always doing melodramas? I feel like he'd be good at something funny.

0

He looks sad all the time, except for when he looks vacant. I guess the subtlety of the other expressions that would portray the full range of human emotion is lost on me, when it comes to him. That being said, I did say that I would watch. Because for some reason, I like looking at him even when I don't enjoy his acting. I guess I keep hoping he'll do something different with his face.

oooh, is he going to blink? Wait...was that a smi...no, he was just positioning his mouth to be open at a different angle...

Don't hate me, I'm just having fun. I like the guy.

0

Canxi - watch Sophie's Revenge. He kind of parodies himself always being sad and broody in this role, which made me like him more.

And not for nothing...but that work out scene was HOT.

0

Yeah it kinda was! I've never seen sweatpants so shiny though, so that was a bit distracting but I mean...whatevs.

I like him too and I should watch Sophies Revenge, I've been meaning to, but I thought I'd be distracted by the voice over or something, lol.

0

I don't think that Won Bin is overrated. Have you watch the movies/dramas he's in? He's a great actor and can play different roles.

0

There are some Korean actors who have made careers out of looking sad and crying pretty.

I don't necessarily disagree that this skill is important to an actor, but the better actors can do more, and better directors know this.

Plus, I have noticed recently, a really good child cast has a huge effect on how you percieve the adult cast.
In EoE, for example, SSH is interacting with his mother in the present while flashing back to his character played by Kim Bum. I got choked up immediately after seeing that. NOT necessarily because I thought SSH did something moving, but I could instantly access the feelings I got from Kim Bum's scenes. The characters were written well enough, too, that I understood/felt how he was feeling as well as felt/felt it.

Sorry about the word stew...

0

Really? Um. You are allowed your opinion.

He may be arrogant. If I was SJS, I'd be a bit arrogant myself.

But do you know anything about what he's done behind the scenes? For his friends and charities?

It's not like all he does is sit around on his ass.

But...no one said all he did was sit on his ass O_O;

I know people may get upset when an actor they like is not super liked by someone else but I think you kind of jumped the gun with that comment. Just a little. I really don't think that was what she was trying to say at all.

0

I wasn't commenting on his worth as a human being - I'm aware that he does a lot of that kind of thing and yay for him for giving back, I do appreciate that.

I'm just saying that I don't get why people say he's such a great actor, because I do not see it. And believe me, I've tried. I sat all the way through MiSa, trying. I like him better in movies than dramas, but I think his acting is so understated as to be invisible. I have wondered if his acting was wishful thinking on the part of the viewer, in fact.

Anyone who has seen me commenting over the months knows that I am quite generous with praise - probably overly so - so for me to admit that I just do not see his talent is really saying something. Goo Hye Sun doesn't bother me. I quite disagree with people who put down Song Seung Heon (in the right roles, he's terrific.) So it's not like I'm just out there bashing people for the fun of it, and I do say that there are things I like about him and roles I've loved him in. So please, relax.

0

"Perhaps I find it puzzling because of the Korean penchant for modesty at all costs, and the SJS glossy is the total antithesis of modesty. "

Mmm I see it the opposite way. Korean business culture is extremely big on projecting and promoting an image of well-being/success. What we call promoting a brand. And Hallyu is nothing, if not a brand.

I've been disappointed with SJS's TV choices, but then again it isn't unexpected either. At this point, it's financially smarter to keep doing flashy, but really by-numbers Hallyu vehicles. I thought Road #1 was different but . . .

I've always wanted So Ji Sup to have Jang Hyuk's post-military career. JH's growth as an actor as well as his strangehold on "must see TV" has been fascinating.

Brilliant, spot on, reply. So Ji Sub kind of reminds me American actors who frequent shows like SNL and channels like Comedy Central (Clooney, Streep, Timberlake), in that he knows his own appeal and doesnt hesitate to use it and even parody it.

Remember his music video anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBLlW93AK-E

It was very tongue-in-cheek and funny. Sometimes I find acknowledgment of success to be more refreshing than 'false' modesty ('oh, I'm not pretty.' 'I'm not THAT great of an actor.')

Then, months later, I was watching him and reading articles and trying to figure it all out, and I came across a reference to the videos, and I watched them again.

*Lightbulb flashes ON*, cue me laughing hysterically and not AT him, but with him.

I actually think he's probably kinda fun in person - I don't mind arrogance at all, done right. If you've got the balls, show 'em. Right?

Really, most of it is just cultural sensibility. If you look at many Korean commercials, there's a strong sense of pride or beatific self-satisfaction exuded. Hallyu takes that and elevates it into a mega-business model for actors who struck gold in the right shows. You are an idol for middle-aged women (think George Clooney meets Rachel Ray) . . . and it works. However, you walk a fine line and you end up like Kwon Sang Woo, who I always insisted was a talented comic actor.

As for So Jj Sup as an actor proper . . . I've seen almost everything he's done, and he didn't actually do the Silent Guy thing until Bali. But, I always figured he was going to be a standard fixture of Mobster dramas/comedies like Jung Joon Ho (the king of mobster comedy) is. There's certain actors that get typecast into Tough Guy roles.

I still maintain that Moo Hyuk's my single favorite character in K-drama and still my favorite acting performance. For me, it's the only truly convincing portrayal of a man falling in love with a woman that I've seen in K-drama.

I know! Those flashbacks are so irritating. Maybe the writers believe that we, being fervid fans of drama, have watched too many of the mopey-amnesiac dramas that we ourselves has somehow gotten into a car accident that leaves us amnesiac. And thus to get the whole story without forgetting about it, every twenty seconds there must be a minute-long flashback of what just happened twenty seconds ago.
But really how we are all rendered unable to imagine things RIGHT when we're watching that particular drama really bothers me. Wait...100 people...all...can't... remember... wait...what?

Giggling at "didn't say much in (Bali)" ....I've seen him in pretty much all his dramas except Roadkill No 1. Must say he doesn't "say much" in pretty much all of them. He just broods. A LOT. His early drama with Chae Rim "We are dating now" is one of my all-time favs, the sweetest show ever. He was sullen and broody even then. In "Cain and Abel" he talked a lot in the beginning until I got worried, then he got shot and lost his memory and went back to broody and I was so relieved. I hope he doesn't get shot or lose his memory this time.

LOLOL Jomo! Never watched Eden, and never intend to. He looks gorgeously umkempt in the drama shots though.

0

I don't think anybody actually loves East of Eden, per se. It kinda plays like Sandglass meets Eyes of Dawn, if it was written by a Twilight fangirl. By the end, I was in love with Shin Tae Hwan and his mischievous grin. Evil was his business, and his business was so good! ;)

Song Seung Hun did his best work for East of Eden. He kinda had to, due to the financial investment he and MBC had in the production. His My Princess character was more or less a variation of his East of Eden character (guy who ends up quietly sacrificing a lot for the sake of a sassy girl.) SSH doesn't have a strong relationship with the camera, and he has to work really hard (as in, you can see him psyching himself up to cry) at conveying inner turmoil. However, SSH is also self-aware of his own pretty nature, and when given the right role, he can play off his self-satisfied charm that, say, Clooney does.

He was awsome in MISA, and he is not always brooding in that drama, He make me suck into his character and make me care for him so much. He was always awsome in dramatic scene so how come he can't act? And he is rocks in action scene, too ex: rought cut. don't compare SJS with others actor who really can't act, because he can... It just he doesn't show his another side because he always choose to play a broody character.

But it just my opinion..

By the end of MiSa I was crying for his character, because he just went through so much shit and could not get a break. But it was really, really painful to get there, and I spent most of the series wondering when the expression on his face would actually BE an expression. I even posited that the problem is with ME, and that since I am fairly new to KDrama and was very new to SJS, perhaps I was lacking in my ability to read emotion in a face that is so different from my own.

So I watched other stuff, too. I've learned that I like him better in movies, and that HE has gotten better over the years...but I guess I just won't ever think he's an amazing actor. I will say that he's someone I like to watch...and I've accepted that I will never understand why.

Well, guess SJS just don't work for you.

About Misa, he did change face!

From Lost face to sad and desesparate face...

His character wasn't going to be happy in that drama.

Also he was a quiet character in that drama so maybe you got bored... or maybe you just dislike his eyes.

I don't know, but this boy makes me cry and for me this mean he is a good character.

I felt offended when someone here compared him to Han Ga In that never ever made me cry for once or get moved.

No, I love his eyes - but here's my thinking on that:

If you naturally look sad ALL THE TIME...how is continually choosing roles where the primary requirement is that you look sad and make people feel sad for you ACTING?

It's just using the face you've got. Kind of like I love Song Seung Heon in the roles where he can look cheeky and hot and wink at people. Because that's all he can really do, right? So let The Pretty do what The Pretty Does, and let The Sad do what The Sad does...and acknowledge that neither are great actors, but good enough in niche roles, and quite enjoyable to look at, as a bonus.

I visited Korea this winter and saw So Jisub in a advertisement poster for womens' underwear. Bras to be exact.
It had a broody SJS and the catch-phrase was something like"I will protect you from the wires so you can be free."

Ever since his face gives me the giggles.

Your description of the commercial makes me think about a famous pic of Janet Jackson:

Is it close to what you saw? :)

Mysti is evil.

I think I'm going to be in Italy a year or so from now. REALLY wanting to make stops in London and Paris and mess with some people...but it won't likely happen, as I'll be travelling with friends.

The moms are going to celebrate turning 50 with lots of WINE, right from the source~looks like Tuscany and then the Amalfi Coast.

Good news. I enjoyed Sign and I'd love to see what the same team comes up with for cyber crime + So Ji Sub's brooding....Now, for the leading lady? I wonder who.

I think there must be some sort of physics related phenomenon on this site.
You know - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction?

We can all fangirl like there is no tomorrow when we lurve somebody, really lurve somebody.
That must mean we reach a point where we HAVE to snark in order to maintain equilibrium in the galaxy.

We do both so well because we HAVE to or the UNIVERSE WILL EXPLODE, or something else dire...

*resembles that remark*

but I'm not trying to be snarky, honest. I am more puzzled and frustrated by my inability to see what others see than I am anything else.

I guess I should have just kept my mouth shut but I keep hoping someone will be able to open my eyes.

I think that sometimes being honest comes off as snarky, even if you are not trying to be.

Sometimes being honestly snarky is more fun than anything, and most of the comments are said lovingly.
I try to preface my comments with "I love him with all my heart, but..."

I don't agree with the "He sucks." type of comment because it isn't fun and it isn't nice.
That is what IMDB is for.

I should have just said something like this:

Even if I go to Australia, or become an actor pretending to be a gangster pretending to be an actor, even though it might mean I'm blind, or have to run away to a tropical island, no matter how hard I try to win over those I've thrown away.. (how's THAT for shout outs to all the times I've watched him...)...

The root of the root of the root is that I think he and SSH are about equal, in terms of talent. Limited, in other words, but enjoyable for various reasons and well-suited for certain roles. Yet SJS gets praise for his acting, and SSH gets universally panned. And I don't get it.

Just finished watching "Always". His acting has not changed much, but he sure has aged quite a fair bit since Misa days. He looks his age, that is mid 30s.

Dramatizing cyber stuff?

Weeeell they could be like Bloody Monday, and do really cheezy, really awesome visualizations of the hacker as a falcon (guess what his handle was?) racing past closing walls.

I don't know, I haven't seen any Korean procedurals, but maybe I should start with Sign and give 'em a try.

Also yay So Ji Sub!

IGNORANT, LOW-STANDARD HORSES WOULD NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ROCK AND A DIAMOND.

Having so much fun as someone else's expense???
GET A LIFE!

No matter what, HATERS GONNA HATE.

And We, who love So Ji-Sub, will always love him.
We know he's a great actor.
To those who doesn't see it, you just might be BLIND.
GET your eyes checked.

Wooooot Wooooot!! I am LOOOOOKING forward to this because of this actor SO JI SUB ! ! ! (I don't know why I still love him, haha.) Wow, he hadn't been working as a actor for 2 years (since Road No. 1 in 2010). Aw, I love this picture of So Ji Sub's face expression like that ~ this reminds of cute, baby big eye cat from Shrek's movie. xD

JoAnne...You should have been polite and careful of what you speaked out !!!

You hurted SJS fc feeting by criticising towards SJS "ACTING", which is his prominent fame among Korean and Int'l viewers.

And you knew only few about SJS as said "I am fairly new to KDrama and was very new to SJS", how dare and impolite to criticise him like that.

You obviously praised SSH and Won Bin, while criticised badly towards SJS.

What if I criticise back about SSH or Won Bin?

Do you know how much awards SJS got both in Korea and from Int'l parties, and what about SSH?
Do you have any idea about SSH's controversy that he had illegally avoided his compulsory military service?

Now what do you feel then ???

Feel free to criticize SSH or Won Bin. I am a grown up, and understand that people have different opinions. Since I have no actual connection to these actors, people feeling differently about them than I do makes no difference to me whatsoever.

Actors and singers perform. Performances merit critique. Not everyone will love everyone, and I think the actors themselves know that. Their jobs bring that along with the territory. Who they are as people is not for us. Who they are as actors is.

Yes, I am aware that SJS wins many awards, and it puzzles me, and yes, I am aware of SSH's controversy. Just as I wasn't criticizing SJS's worth as a human being, I don't praise SSH for being a stellar example of Korean manhood. And even then, I take both sides with a grain of salt. I assume that (just as in my country) many awards are actually publicity stunts, and that SSH acted on bad advice from management, rather than actively being a shirker.

JoAnne, tell me:
Is there a law that i'm unaware of, which says that we can only praise and not criticize on K drama blogs?
And why people behave like if the actors or actresses were their property, or their kids, or their gods? Judging their acting is easy because it's right in our face. I will never take what i hear in the medias about Stars for granted: Too much manipulation, a lot of things we don't know. And i don't want to know, not my business. I want to be entertained. Quite easy to say then if the man or the lady has done it for me.
Is it so hard to understand than we all have different opinions and sensibilities? And why people can't understand a bit of humor? They didn't realize yet that we gently make fun of SSH? We are not praising or bashing him: We just have some harmless fun. And so with SJS.
Quite sure they have already heard all we say here, and surely worst.
