So Ji-sub confirms crime drama Ghost
by javabeans
The new drama Ghost is a go for So Ji-sub, which brings him back to television after two years away. It’s no surprise that he’s once again playing an intense character in a dramatic thriller, since that’s his bread and butter (Road No. 1, Only You, Rough Cut, I’m Sorry I Love You, What Happened In Bali…); what I’d really love is to see him give his furrowed brows a rest and laugh up a storm in a comedy. Hasn’t he earned the laughs after all those tortured romances and tragic deaths?
In Ghost, So Ji-sub stars as a cold detective in a cyber crimes investigation unit. It’s not a fantasy drama but the setting is described as “a cyber world different from the world we live in” — one where cyber investigators find out people’s secrets that are hidden in their ultramodern techie gadgets, “solving puzzles with suspense and thrills.”
So’s character, Kim Woo-hyun, is the son to a high-ranking official of the police department, and has progressed with top marks through academy, training, and now as an elite officer himself. He’s got a strong sense of duty, a perfectionist attitude toward his work, and is one of his department’s top brains. His leadership skills are excellent but also believes that harboring friendships can be detrimental to his work. Naturally, the one person who can open his hart is someone with whom he has “a conflicting fate,” a former friend and rival. So… basically he’s the police version of Park Shin-yang genius coroner counterpart from Sign, which was the PD’s last drama.
Still no word on why this drama is called Ghost. Are there traces of ghosts in his case? Or maybe our perfect asshole of a hero (’cause he sounds a little like an asshole, let’s be honest) is haunted by the memory of his rival? You’d think that in a drama that sounds like such a standard, run-of-the-mill procedural (cold guy + smart brain + crimes to solve) you would lead with the unique angle.
Ghost will be a Wednesday-Thursday drama that premieres in May.

doesn't matter if its typical procedural crime drama as long as its So Ji Sub!!
I gladly agree with you, this guy needs to find a good laugh comedy, I have not seen him in any comedy drama.

I'm waiting for the police procedural/medical drama where the lead is a good, well-rounded, warmhearted guy. Are nice detectives just not dramatic enough?

I know, right? Plus, the 'bad' image is really just a sham, because the guy always has noble redeeming qualities.
If he's an asshole, make him a real asshole, not a fakeout. Give him some really nasty qualities like selfishness or greed. Or else make him a well-rounded and complex good-hearted individual - if you're a good writer, you can make tons of conflict out of ordinary people.
I guess this is why nothing really will top White Tower, in my opinion.

Haha, make him like House - selfish and cold, and yunno, a real jerk. And sarcastic. Not one that still looks after his buddies when they're in trouble. Those qualities that redeem them are kind of irking me. Wait - you said he was an ass - why isn't he being one? I expected one, and you gave me a inner softy? Yeah, I'm probably that one customer you've seen in stores arguing about having coffee that has a two pinches of sugar, not just one. HAHA. But yeah, I kind of want a nice-guy badass (not ass-y) hero. Please?

I agree with you WT is one drama that had put so much pressure on my chest -I could literally find it difficult to breathe. The tension is so much and the acting so intense .
I hope Ghost comes close to it , but then it will make JS 's brows dig its furrows deeper. Is it just his facial expression regardless of the scene ? LOL . Well he has to learn to relax that, as that will follow him for the rest of his life (wrinkles will be there ). Oh well ,Botox can help and for males they say that will give him character not ageing signs.

Ahh! I will prolly not watch this!
They say "ghost" a lot, it seems when someone is mysteriously good at something.
Maybe equal to our "whisperer," which has gone from making sense with "Horse whisperer" to not making sense with "bra whisperer"
I mean, who talks to lingerie?
I expect YY will answer that.

They usually use a different for a person with keen skills, 귀신 (gwi-shin). This title, 유령 (yoo-ryung), means a phantasm/specter, which makes me expect the woo-ee-ooOOooo kind of ghost. I think. Maybe. Who knows.
They should've just called it Cyber and been done with it, based on how many times they used that word in the press release, I swears.

I thought SJS was going to get shot in the head and die one ep into the drama, and come back as a vengeful ghost who keeps showering and showering frantically in an attempt to come back to life. Hey, Jomo, SSH probably talks to his towel all the time, saying things like, "Looking good down there, old man" Or "Hang in there, chingu." Or "Aigoo, chincha!" giving it a friendly slap when it slips.

Oh, and I think I know what's up with the title 'Ghost' (only cause I just finished a book penned by the FBI's most wanted cyber computer-cracking genius).
Ghost (in the Wire) is a term used for said genius able to infiltrate top level programs, firewalls, etc., and doesn't leave any traces of him being there. (Which will be a total anathema to So Ji-sub's ego once he figures out the plot.)

Winning scene from "Broody Ghost": SJS stares vacantly at the computer for 10 secs, snarls, "I work best when I'm topless!", rips his shirt into shreds, and then sinks sullenly into a crouch at the computer.

A rom-com for the man, she needs a good laugh from his emotionally draining roles.

I can't even be sick of him in serious roles because I've never even watched any one of his dramas/movies. Why? Because the first kdrama my mother decided to make me watch was Stairway to Heaven (Choi Jiwoo & Kwon Sangwoo) and it pretty much ruined me off of any overly dramatic kdrama. If there is ever a kdrama to NOT use to open the gateway to kdramaland, or ANY dramaland, it's that one. Amnesia, cancer, incest (does it count if it's between step siblings?), evil stepmother and evil-er stepsister, and the whole "I give my eyes to you so you can see again" thing. GAH!
But this I will give a shot as long as the ending is NOTHING like what I heard the Sign ending was.

Well, he did a rom-com in film back in 2009, called Sophie's Revenge.
He probably needs an outlet to vent out all the press meetings and photo journals stress he's been stacking and piling on top of his office desk.
I wouldn't be surprised if this show hits close to home for him, like journalism espionage. Someone is out to crack down his magazine label and hacking off his Apple hard drive. LOL!

Well, he was in a rom-com where he got the girl, "Now We Are Dating" in 2002, with Chae Rim as his girl. But was he happy? Nope. He moped his way through that one, too, and waffled about whether he could/should have the girl and treated her horribly (and Chae Rim was so cute! And perky!). I am so over his indecisive gloom, I never mind it when he gets done in in the end - I think I would do it, too, if I had to deal with that face all the time. He's like Eeyore.

I'd be more interested were he literally haunted by the ghost of his rival, not just the memory. *snort* How's that for crime scene hijinks? Or if the ghosts of the victims helped him solve the crimes... via interwebz? Ghosts can send emails. According to several horror movies I've seen.
In other news, I've had about enough of the "cold" surgeon/detective/chaebol character. Not every successful professional in the world is a raging asshole. <.<

With his medical skills, he helps saving the life of a hacker's daughter, and fall in love with her (time continuum rupture). Everyone gets killed to send him back to his era.
Second chance at not screwing the love and meaning of his life...

Okay JB I will get all geeky and just share a hunch here. I think maybe they are playing with the technological term "GHOST" which is an acronym for "General Hardware-Oriented System Transfer". It's a software that copies data from hard disks and generally used for backing up or cloning drives.
So cyber investigators, peoples secrets hidden in tech gadgets... kinda fits the bill.
I'm hoping this will be an interesting ride.

There's 1000 Years of Love, where So Ji Sup plays a shifty con who was once a great Baekche general and now sails knock-off clothes to bar hostesses.
This is the greatest sageuk in the history of Belleza's mind. Thrill to Sung Yu Ri (who believably a Baekche princess who uhhh has a scene where she misses the toilet) intones the greatest line in the history of K-drama: "die Shilla pig! I will boil all their livers in a boiling vat of water!" Even This Mishil would cower to Sung Yu Ri.
Nah, seriously, So Ji Sup started out in comedies. He was in that sitcom with Chae Rim and Kim Sun Ah. And he was kinda a goofball in Law Firm.
Even accounting for Glass Slippers, So Ji Sup didn't turn into, well, the DMX (aka "I feel is pain -- I fell is rain!") of K-drama until Bali.
