Queen In-hyun’s Man releases romantic promos

Oh, right; I’d almost forgotten about that other time-traveling fusion sageuk romance drama, Queen In-hyun’s Man, what with the fusion/period-warping glut in recent days. But promos are out, and I find the poster’s imagery dreamy and atmospheric — not what I expected from the Vampire Prosecutor PD, but not a bad thing, either. I could dig lovely and whimsical.

Now, the teaser videos DO show the director’s Vamp-y style, and remind me quite a lot of that drama’s initial teaser — short and to the point, with a distinct stylish flair. In both clips, Ji narrates, “I was born in 1694.”

Despite sharing some key story elements, Queen In-hyun’s Man looks like it’s going in a totally different direction than the cracked-out hilarity of the currently airing Rooftop Prince, which is probably a good thing. You don’t want to come on the heels of a drama with such a similar premise, and then also mimic its tone.

In the poster at top, Ji Hyun-woo (A Thousand Kisses) is dressed in hanbok for his Joseon-era character, a scholar who supports the reinstating of Queen In-hyun (when the queen is sidelined by an ambitious concubine, Jang heebin). Yoo Inna (Best Love) lives in modern-day Seoul, and when our hero jumps three centuries into the future — er, our present — the two fall in love. Hopefully with shenanigans.

Yoo Inna’s character is Choi Hee-jin, who’s five years into her debut and still a no-name actress. Thanks to the first love who ditched her, Hee-jin gets cast in the role of Queen In-hyun in the TV drama New Jang Heebin and starts to rise in fame… and just as she’s on the cusp of breaking through to being a top star, she meets Kim Boong-do (Ji Hyun-woo), the time traveler from 300 years ago. In the posters, the copy reads, “Meeting through a gap in time, their one and only love story.” What a bland tagline for such an out-there plot. (Oh, the puns we could have had.)

A story like this is so dependent on chemistry that I’m curious to see whether they’ve got it; the execution looks like it’s solid so I’m not too worried on that front. And while I’m loving the outrageousness of Rooftop Prince so far, I’m not averse to watching a moodier, more dramatic version as well. There’s enough room on the time-traveling carousel another good story. (I hope it has a good story.)

Queen In-hyun’s Man airs on tvN, and premieres April 18.

I really didn't like this dude on ATK, but the poster looks intriguing. I'm curious to see what "darkness" comes out of it since it's the same PD from Vampire Prosecutor.

I liked him at first in ATK, and then the drama went downhill and he got more and more stupid....

It's terrible, but I'm looking at these pictures and the trailer (cool as it is) but I get flashes from ATK so I'm not sure if I can get myself to watch this.

never saw ATK but i love ji hyun-woo in Invincible Lee Pyung Kang, which i'm currently watching right now. just from that, i'll probably give queen in-hyun's man a try

Yeah, I recently stumbled upon Invincible Lee Pyung Kang (on ViKi) and decided to give it a try. My expectations were low since I hadn't even heard of it before, but it actually was a pretty cute rom-com. Both Ji Hyun Woo and Nam Sung Mi were funnier and cuter than I'd seen them before. IMO, Ji Hyun Woo should do more comedies and stay away from the melos.

I'm not sure I can watch it, either. At the end of the promo he gave this slight smirk that gave me a really bad ATK vibe - I think I will have to read recaps and forums first, because if he's even the slightest bit weak and mopey and 'conflicted' I'm staying far away. I swear, I wanted to strangle his character in ATK. And not strangle in a good way, like with a superbly played villain, but strangle in a bad way, as when you are so fed up with the stupidity of someone you just want them off your screen, forever.

To confirm @Mystisith's answer (in correct order), and I guess their significance and symbolism here:

Agápē - love (most specifically love for God in Catholic thought, but can also be unconditional love; since there are 4 familiar types in Greek philosophy: érōs (passionate love), philía (affectionate love; based on loyalty), & storgē (filial love; based on commitment, just like "bromance" and "sworn brother" ~~yeah right Siwon & Han Geng, keep fooling us...~~
Kim Boong-do (modern garb) here keeps looking over Choi Hee-jin, probably an aspect over his adoration and respoct of for the fallen Queen Consort, but maybe that adoration had turned into love...
...but I'm in a historical hole here. Inhyeon had been deposed May 1688, and had been reinstated back in 1694. So how the hell is he supposed to have helped her reinstatement when he wasn't even born during the time of the 1688 Gisa Sahwa purge???

Phorá - time (as in instance/occurrence: "How many times..." (몇 번에...)
You can clearly see the space in between the glass displays and stands, and the way the camera swings back and forth 3 times, alternating on both...
...and also, the space contains a door, basically symbolically alluding to guy's travel to 2012...

Chṓros - space (specifically a contained type of space...)
Both of our time-struck lovers are clearly confined in glass displays and stands, clearly demonstrating that both are contained in their own world (and to extend, their space and time)...yet both leap out of their displays (with not even so much as a glass shard)

the Greek meanings were what I just merely whiffed things off wikipedia and wiktionary; no matter how inaccurate wikipedia can be, IDGAD...

...and the interpretations were how I saw it, and woah was my interpretations too detailed and too true??? Haha my mind must be too creative I guess...XD

I decided i would watch all the dramas having a time travel premise, but this one is the one i'm anticipating the most.
In the trailer, we can hear something like the sound of a flat ECG. Could it be that JHW's character has a NDE?
Also, maybe he didn't travel through time. Maybe he is just immortal (vampy?), and he tries to connect with every new reincarnation of his first love through the ages (oh no! Not another heartbreak love for him...). I'm just a sucker for Fantasy and Fantastic.
Please writer-nim, make this good. I really want to enjoy this journey.

Am I the only one amused by the not so parallel allude to the non time travelling drama "The Princess's Man"? hehehe And its funny cos if they wanted to avoid the direct of "The Queen's man"putting a name in was too much of a mouthful for me.... imagine if I wanted to gush to my friends about it ( if ever) i have to repeatedly say Queen Inhyun"s man! Who? Queen In Hyun! Who? X.X

I hate to say that, but Mr Idol is very average (to be kind), and Ji Hyun Woo is completely underused in that movie. The pics of him with the abs and the guyliner are the only thing to remember. But still, he is so much more than a BODY. The man can act you know... Here, the story is flat and ultra conventional. One of those product movies which are scams for girls: Sparkly trailer, then no content.

Yoo Inna, I like her fine. But she is so not ready for a main role like this. Her acting range is v. short, surface deep. She was v.good in Secret Garden as the scatter brained side-kick friend and in Highkick (essentially a similar comedic role). But in Best Love, with her role elevated to that of a more serious second female, she was totally bland, wooden, out of her depth. Seriously doubt that she will be able to carry a whole drama as the main lead unless of course, the role fits her to a T (i.e., light, funny, not requiring much depth)

I forgot about this drama too. Everything looks so beautiful. Why are they killing me with all of these great dramas? I'm trying to be selective in my drama watching, but with so many wonderful dramas to choose from it's becoming difficult.

Lord knows I need justification, lol. I can't even watch non-Korean tv anymore. I saw a snippet on tv of some guy sitting by the pool and was totally grossed out by how out of shape he was. In my mind I was thinking that would never happen in a Kdrama. I'm officially ruined.

I am going to be so open-minded like everyone is on here.You give it straight and are always spot on.Now after seeing the trailor I am all aboard and will be watching. Ji Hyun Woo is finally in something showcasing his talent and talent.I hope he and Yoon In Na can draw the chemistry and laughs from each other to make this drama a success.I belueve in them and hope this can give them a breakout role.

I've been looking forward to this drama more than Rooftop Prince actually. I really like Ji Hyun-Woo and I like all the mysterious and moody trailers. Yoo Inna is also a draw since I'm curious about how she'll do in her first lead role. Plus they're cute!

It'd be cool if JHW's character was as snarky as our Vamp Prosecutor too :D

Why does it have to be the Queen though? It would be funnier if he fell in love with Jang Heebin.. I mean the actress who plays her. The bickerings and the love/hate relationship, the sexual tension.. it would have been glorious.

Well, you know, some dramas (esp. the sageuks) have those double (hypocritical) standards: villifying the villain/ess (even hating them) while portraying her more prominently than the hero/ine...

...that's why there are more dramas concerning them, like Prince Yeonsangun, Jang Hee-bin, Jang Nok-soo, Kim Gae-shi, Mishil, etc...

...but since it is Queen Inhyeon's drama, I guess Jang Heebin would be pushed aside for now...

Rooftop Prince is on the backburner for me. Reason being? It's popularity seems to be driven by its Kpop idol and those usually don't do well. The more reason I'll give THIS one a try. Plus, I've always liked Yoo In Na and I'm excited to see her play the her first lead. Still wishing it's with Yoon Kye Sang instead, but it's okay! I, too, am hoping this storyline has depth and plenty of layers! I also hope the characters are strong and not irritably annoying! :D

some idols do pretty well in dramas. Rain, Lee Seungi and Eric to name a few. And Yoochun is doing fine as well. You might want to give it a chance when the drama finishes airing, that way you can read dramabeans recap and it might turn out to be good :)

I hope this won't be as comedic as Rooftop Prince because that won't make any difference with RP anymore and of course, the endless comparisons will ensue. I actually think this'll go in a more dramatic route than RP. Will probably check this one, after RP ends...one time-travelling drama is enough for me Thank You.
