Park Ji-yoon and Danny Ahn join Goodbye Wifey
by girlfriday
Geez, it’s like a friggin’ Lie to Me convention up in here. At first I thought, oh how funny, singer-actress Park Ji-yoon will be having a reunion of sorts with Lie to Me co-star Hong Soo-hyun in Channel A’s Goodbye Wifey. And then Danny Ahn joined the cast as well, and though he only cameoed in Lie, it’s still a weird coincidental reunion. In that drama the three of them rarely crossed paths (and Park Ji-yoon was wasted in that fade-to-nothing hotel manager role), but in their new drama, Park will be the other woman who tries to steal Hong Soo-hyun’s hubby, played by Ryu Shi-won. And based on the title, it seems she gives wifey a run for her money. At least it’s a rom-com, so even if it’s war, it’ll be the funny kind, right?
Park will play Ryu Shi-won’s first love, which is a concept that refuses to die in dramaland, no matter how many times I try to kill it. Her character, Oh Hyang-gi, decides to come back into her ex’s life, not caring that he’s gotten married to another woman the meantime. She can be cold at times but also sweet, which means she’s basically going to play him hot and cold. He ends up leaving his wife of five years to be with her, so the drama will focus mostly on the wayward husband’s journey back to the wife he thought he didn’t love. Lest you start to feel too bad for wifey, she gets a love interest as well.
It’s unclear if it’ll be Danny Ahn, because he plays Ryu Shi-won’s best buddy — that’s a complication you can’t really recover from. Ryu Shi-won plays an ex-championship fighter who now owns a gym, and Danny Ahn his ex-trainer and bestest friend. The drama is described as a romantic comedy about married couples who need to find romance once the honeymoon phase is over, and the “sweet and savage war of love.” Hm, sounds… violent but comical? Scandalous but cute? Hope it lives up to the description.
Goodbye Wifey will premiere May 7 on cable network Channel A.

"I’m using a cutesy word for wife ’cause the Korean title uses a shortened slang form of the word."

As long as the writers of "Lie To Me " don't join this little reunion I may watch it.

To tell you the truth I don't really remember what part Hong Soo Hyun played.
I'm sitting trying to think and wondering if I zoned out then came back for the karoke and coke fight scenes.
Honestly I could tell you. What a waste.

If it turns out to be one of those dramas where I'm (literally) pulling at my hair and slapping the monitor watching these people, I'll be passing on this drama.
The plot doesn't appeal to me the least - a shame since I actually like the cast.
BTW, is it just me or does Ryu Shi-Won actually look better when he's trying be more gruff then soft?

I think RSW does look better...but that didn't stop me from laughing out loud at his baby face trying to be manly tough.

Yoon Eun Hye too? I'm hoping for Yoon Eun Hye in something so selfishly I can have her and Shin Bong Sun in Running Man. Maybe throw in Joo Ji hoon? --;; I know it's shallow...

I think it would be funny if Danny Ahn did turn out to be the Wife's love interest. Sucks for the bromance but I can live with it.

A Lie to Me convention?? Not sure how i'm supposed to take that... Should i faint, run away or scream in horror? I sure wouldn't use that for my resume.
With Channel A, it's a hit or miss. Miss most of the time imo:
-Bachelor's Vegetable Store was saved by his cast.
-Color of Woman couldn't even achieve that.
-K pop Ultimate Audition is very uneven, and it's a copy of You're Beautiful, let's be honest here.
-Don't know much about Heaven's Garden, the family drama.
-I'm waiting to see the first episodes of Immortal Classic, the new Kimchi drama that has just started.
My opinion is that they need to invest in good writers for their dramas. They will attract good actors, ant then the rest will fall in place naturally.
That or they will stay stuck in third line.

Ji Yoon character reminds me of Charlize Theron in Young Adult. The cast looks good so i hope the writing is tight.

What Mystisith said I agree and so sad I have to pass on this drama too. The storyline sounds a mess and typical and none of the actors are favorites of mine.Channel A also has a habit of giving out the whole drama in 6 episodes then dropping the ball when if 20 episodes you should drag it out but in a way fans don't get annoyed.I feel for them and TV Chosun.

"Park will play Ryu Shi-won’s first love, which is a concept that refuses to die in dramaland, no matter how many times I try to kill it." Hehehehe.... maybe if we all try to kill together?
I'm afraid the whole thing doesn't sound too interesting. In fact, the whole 'first love' thing sounds totally annoying because it hints at a story line that could involve some 'ex' thinking she still has some claim on a former love. Which is something that drives me bonkers in just about all k-dramas, from My Name Is Kim Sam Soon to A Thousand Kisses (even mentioning the latter makes me shudder - that evil ex, ughhhh).
Other than that, although Park Ji-yoon is pretty and all, pictures like the one of her above, just kind of, I don't know scare me? I look at these pictures of many Korean celebrities and as much as I like a lot of k-dramas, there is this sense of unrealistic physical perfection (like EVERY character looks utterly amazing). And I feel really sorry for Korean youngsters especially that grow up with this and must feel like total failures if they have any sort of imperfection. I don't know if it's the prevalence of plastic surgery in South Korea (not implying anything about PJY specifically here, I have no idea whether she's all 'natural' or not), but I don't get quite the same impression from Japanese or Taiwanese dramas. It's like in Korea you can't even have a tiny mole.
Okay, that was way off topic, but that pic just jumped out at me! :-\

I think I know what you mean. I think there are more "unperfect" people on US television. And when I see ordinary S. Koreans on youtube or something I actually felt a little surprised that many aren't as "perfect". Not that its a bad thing!

Yeah, I know what you mean. For a while all I watched was kdramas, then one day I turned on Bones. At about 5 min into the episode, I realized I was in shock because there was an overweight character.
^^;;

Isn't that funny? Before watching k-dramas, I would have said the Western media promotes unhealthy perfection, and although that does exist (most of all in advertising I'd say), TV dramas are more diverse in physical appearances of characters (certainly secondary characters). But k-dramas.... eye candy can be nice, but sometimes amount of it gets scary.

This sounds like a typical daily drama filled with couples divorcing because of one bitchy woman and then the wife gets a makeover, making the husband suddenly want her again. =_= Aigoo. This is honestly something my parents would watch!

At first I thought the plot sounded interesting but now it sounds kind of frustrating...it still has some potential to be cute but also a lot more to be frustrating...if there's one thing I hate in kdramas it is a male lead who is still pining over his first love or can't make up his damn mind.....we'll see..i'm still excited about seeing Hong Soo Hyun in a lead role so I'll definitely stay to take a look at the first episode or so

When they put romantic before comedy I almost sure that it will end up become full-blown angst eating while crying typical k-romantic with a tiny bit of comedy, so I'll pass I guess.

Ah Park ji yoon! She's so pretty. And her latest album is great.
But because I like her I don't really like the fact that she's gonna play a role of a husband-stealer.

Actually, this storyline sounds a lot like a Taiwanese drama I recently saw called 'The Fierce Wife'. Has anyone seen?
I don't watch too many Taiwanese dramas but the storyline kind of got my curiosity so I downloaded a few episodes and man, I was hooked! It ended up being really good. So this drama might not be so bad if it's similar to the Taiwanese one.

The plot slightly reminds me of the side-romance from Coffee Prince. She had left her boyfriend to go be with that other guy in New York and then came back.
