MBC sitcom Standby adds to its cast

Upcoming daily sitcom Standby is busily filling out its cast for its April launch, bringing onboard Im Shi-wan (The Moon That Embraces the Sun), whose casting has been rumored for a while but now is confirmed. The show will depict the workplace family at a fictional broadcast station TV11, and stars Ryu Jin as a (bumbling) aspiring news anchor.

Im will be playing a high schooler whose character shares his own name. He’s a student with top marks and a chic appearance — the guy who has everything, except maybe a care, since he’s indifferent to everybody around him. Aw, is Jung So-min gonna have to deal with another annoyingly perfect high school robot boy? Well, if she could teach Baek Seung-jo how to feel emotions, maybe she’ll have similar luck with Shi-wan.

Note: No word yet on lovelines, so I’m not making any assumptions. Ryu Jin and Jung So-min were announced first, but there’s no indication yet that they’ll be a romantic pairing; keep in mind that sitcom casts are large, and there are a number of roles left to be filled. That said, High Kick has taught me that sometimes the unlikeliest pairings are the ones that tug most at the heart.

It’s a busy time for Im, and while he was already somewhat known in kpop circles as an idol in nine-member boy band ZE:A, he can thank Moon/Sun (where he played eye-blindingly pretty Yeom) for his newfound popularity, which he’s parlaying into several more acting gigs. Soon we’ll be able to see him in Equator Man, portraying the younger counterpart to Lee Jun-hyuk’s character, and then Standby.

Another supporting cast member who’s recently come onboard is Park Joon-geum, who was recently in Ojakkyo Brothers but is still largely known as “Hyun Bin’s mother” for her role in Secret Garden as the socialite mom throwing verbal stones at Hyun Bin’s literal glass house, and fiercely opposing Ha Ji-won for being — horrors! — poor.

Park plays an announcer who’s a “living legend” at the station with a killer fashion sense, and probably a doozy of a strong personality. At least we know she’s got that one in the bag.

Standby follows High Kick 3 and premieres next month on MBC.

Me too ! This is what could bring me to watch this. The Dragon Lady. She was great in Ojakgyo Bros. She definitely has a comic sense. I was actually surprised when she said in an interview that she was really from a wealthy family. That would be fun to see her as a character losing everything. She could learn how to live in a rooftop house.
I know one which is available, but the door is broken and repaired with green tape... :)

Same here. I actually really liked her in Ojakkyo Brothers. She may have been a little wacky but all she cared about was SY's well-being.

It's funny because I vaguely remember her in Secret Garden.

It's nice to see Im coming on board for this project, but isn't this a daily sitcom with a projected 6 gazillion episodes (like HK3)? I always wonder how the idols can participate in these lengthy projects, considering their packed schedules involving their obligations to their music groups.

I still maintain that I would hate to see a loveline with JSM and RJ, no matter how unexpected. He may be able to bring the funny (there were flashes of it early on in ATK) but as far as any romantic chemistry - nope. WAY nope.

I guess because there are so many characters in a sitcom, they're not always on set; when their character is not being focused on they can do other things. And though it's 5 episodes a week, that's 20 mins per ep and thus onlya bit over an hour and a half a week. As opposed to two 70+ minute episodes of a miniseries where all the actors have bigger parts. So I guess in that way sitcoms are a good way to get themselves out there - helped by the fact that they use their real names.

here's hoping for Siwan's loveline with some interesting noona.....i prefer age difference relationships....like in High Kick 3...i'm rooting for Kyesang-Jiwon...lol. n even Yoosun-Seungyoon(that's illegal i guess.....whatever..)
n plus, from the characters' description..i don't think i'd be interested in playful kiss ver.2 kinda pairing..
thanks for the info.
ps: from park joon geum's character description...sounds like she'd have some interesting overlapping characteristics with Siwan=as in...fashionable appearance...i want a showdown already...lol
Siwan is afterall the fashion leader in his group.he even designed one of their concepts.

I don't like this guy. He is NOT good looking. TBH He is very WONKY looking, like there is something wrong with his face and I don't really want to look at it. I laughed at MoonSun when he was supposed to be the super good looking perfect guy.
