Love Rain premieres to low ratings
by girlfriday
Today marks the premiere of KBS’s new throwback drama Love Rain, the new project from famed season drama PD Yoon Suk-ho, starring Jang Geun-seok and Yoona. But despite the young starpower, the series premiered to disappointing ratings: 5.8%.
Both new Monday-Tuesday dramas were dwarfed by the reigning leader, MBC’s 50-episode Light and Shadow, which is enjoying a ratings resurgence since the end of History of a Salaryman. Light/Shadow recorded 20.6%, on its second week of over-twenty-percent ratings. SBS’s Fashion King, now in its second week, went down to 9.2%.
I caught the first episode of Love Rain, and it’s definitely got PD Yoon’s stamp on it — it’s atmospheric, moody, and beautiful, and is populated by characters that drive me bonkers. I grew up on his dramas, so there’s certainly a comfort-food familiarity there. It had touches of all his dramas, particularly Feelings and Summer Scent, with the campus setting and mood. At times it feels like a long music video rather than a series pilot, but it does have a breathtaking ambiance that can’t be ignored.
It’s just likely not going to be a runaway hit because it’s your mom’s drama — and not only because it’s set in the 70s, but because it feels like a classic kdrama with all its attendant trappings. Long suffering heroes/heroines, quotes from Love Story, etc. I mean, it’s basically like every story my parents told me about their youth, right down the cultural references. So despite the trendy young stars headlining it, it’s a story geared towards the PD/writer’s own generation.
Between Light/Shadow and Love Rain, I guess it’s pretty much going to be 70s Mondays for a good long while. Ya dig?

omo, i know what i feel in love with.............the cinematography. i mean, those shots are RIDICULOUS!!! A-class filming. sure the story line has been said over and over again, but after the hectic and crappy dramas that have been coming out, why not do a drama if you know it works? i find this comforting. I love LOVE RAIN!

I think they're using the RED ONE camera. That digital camera gives TV shows a "film look" (due to its resolution), and it gives the cinematographer a lot of control over light. You can tell when a K-drama is using RED ONE, because the sunlight is just captured with such dazzling and dreamy hues within the frame.
I think people associate Chuno or Tree With Deep Roots as the RED showpiece, but my favorite use use was the Princess Man. When they used it . . . wow. And with that gorgeous score, it made the Princess Man gave the feel and intensity of a sumptuous BBC period drama.

I think this drama looks a bit better than fashion king imo altho the plot to this drama is exactly like the classic..so its not very original at all & the classic is my favoriteee korean movie (son ye jin & the main guy was really good) i haven't watch this yet but i watched some clips of it so far and it does look really slow pace... jang guen suk is a really good actor but yeah, he doesn't pick good roles lately and his dramas aren't doing that good anymore..even if you dislike him, you can't deny that he's a pretty good actor. as for yoona, i think she slightly improved..her acting in yamd and cinderella man irked me a lot that i didn't even get through the whole series..the problem with her acting is she can't really form tears and when she tries to do crying scenes or dramatic scenes, it always looks really awkward cuz she tends to flare her nose and bite her lip/pout to express sadness D:..i like her tho but not her acting, even some of the other snsd girls are better in acting than her (taeyeon, jessica, etc) but hoping the rating improves cuz i was kinda looking forward to this drama until i heard it was a tad boring -__-

This is so refreshing. I love the feel of the drama. The whole mood is like a great love song waiting to start at any moment. I love romance, and although I like it more with comedy, I do love the quiet romance.

aish...i'm a huge JGS fan so i'm going to support this drama to the end, even if i end up not enjoying it. Some comments here are so quick to judge. I don't understand why people have to over analyze dramas. i don't know u guys do, but i watch them to relax and get away from stress. isn't that the point? AND saying JGS is arrogant...do u even know him personally? I'm not being biased even if i am his fan, u just can't judge him when u haven't even met the guy. ugh.

i wonder why there are so many negative rants here.
when i watched the first episode i thought it was really nicely shot, nice colours & all.
it was striking for me, because it made me realise that this story could only be re-told in a high school context in modern times.
whereas in the 60s or 70s, it could still happen among the 20s.
it made me realise how times have changed.
innocence has become a thing of the past.
i'd continue watching this until, well until then..

I'm usually not a fan of JGS, don't particularly care for the role choices he's made & I downright hated his last movie. That being said, after one episode, I don't hate Love Rain. Agree, that Yoona is the weak link but withholding final opinion until we get further into the series.

I watched eps 1 and 2 before I make any opinion.
Cinematography is very good.
Yoona is an excellent actress and I agree with the PD when he said so...why? because in this age of "one size fits all", Yoona can deliver a "one size fits all acting - the voice and facial expression fit all regardless of emotion...the viewer, like me, didn't know whether she's happy, sad, excited, melancholic etc - thus she fits to the "one size fits all acting".
For future episodes, I too will wait for dramabeans' recaps then decide to watch.
Meantime, I'll watch our homegrown drama "walang hanggan", par excellence acting by coco martin, julia montes (she's only 18), dawn zulueta and richard gomez. cinematography, script, musical score, directing etc - EXCELLENT.
I highly recommend if you're a Filipino and you have TFC - "Walang Hanggan"...coco martin is extremely goooooooooooood...

I love melodrama. I love those quiet, thoughtful movies that pulls you into their world and immerses you into that fluffy idealistic world of young love...but seriously I'm pretty disappointed with the plot in Love Rain. There is nothing to look forward to. They would probably end up together.. or they end up like their parents. Either scenario doesn't excite me. *sigh* And to think Winter Sonata was just downright gorgeous. Will attempt watching this once it's complete.

This is very hilarious. Most of the reasons people here don't like the show is because they don't like it because of Yoona, or JKS, or they think they don't like the story. Then they bash it as a bad drama. LOL super LOL. Cause most of these people did not even watch it to begin with! I wonder what's to justify their arguments that it's bad? How shallow is that?
I didn't watch The King 2Hearts as I thought the story is not my cup of tea. And I've seen both leads' dramas before and their acting was just passable to me. But I don't go round telling people the show is bad. I don't start bashing the show because I have not watched yet. So I put my suspicion of the show on hold until I watch it for myself or I keep quiet about it if I'm not going to watch it. I don't say it's bad as I haven't watched it.
So if you have not watched it, don't jump the gun and declare something you don't know to avoid looking like a fool later on.

yeah, agree. but i really like love rain even if it's a classic kind of story. i love the 70s couple in this drama. there's something very sweet and cute about them. and i have to compliment jangguensok yoona and kimshihoo for nailing both charactors they each has to act as. so, i don't think love rain deserves low ratings.

Love Rain, is one of the most amazing drama I've seen it may look or feel like a long music video for the first episode but it's one of the many things that caught my attention, you can feel the right emotions and the love the director is telling us because I think that's what they are trying to say is that when you fell inlove it must feel like a music video that contains all the music of your heart just to suit the atmosphere sending to you by a unfamiliar feeling, this is really unique drama. it might feel a little old fashion but that's what we are looking for: a true innocent love that can only happened in the old age and a rare kind of love that is difficult to understand in the current era. This kind of drama is not a waste, it's has true art in every frame of the camera and every steps of the actors. it makes you want to go back in the past but at the same time its makes you wonder what fate brings you in the present. Which is more important living the past or living the present? 'Love means never having to say you're sorry' this story is made out of love so what ever happen that love will remains in this story, and forever be known :D

I think Love Rain won't be able to redeem sukkie but i think that his current drama has potential and it's not as bad as Mary stayed out all night. At least he is starting to go up all the ladder again. He Really needs a great movie/drama that's going to put him back on top again. AND He should have a more manly Hairstyle.

I just finish watching Mary stay out all night and find that it is really a wonderful drama as conpared to Your're Beautiful especially if u r talking about the contents rather than simply focusing on many handsome male actors in the later drama--shallow.
Jang keun Suk appeared to be more manly in both Mary*** n You're beautiful but seemed more boyish in You're my pet and Love rain. anyway, Love rain's story is really less appealling but aleast You're my pet is humourous so the boyish look is still acceptable but not Love rain.
REALLy a failure....Love rain...leading actress Yoon looked so much older than Jang Keun Suk in the drama. What's wrong with the hairstylist???

It was boring and dragging. The leads were mismatch. Yoona is a rookie Actor, NO APPEAL at all, she looks and feels one dimensiontional. Pretty face with nothing going behind the eyes ...Why did they cast Yoona? she can't act. Please don't cast her anymore , what a disappointment. Besides, the Koreans cannot relate to the 70's...they are all about pop.

1,2,3...in just three seconds i fell in love ??? i fell in love with this drama! I couldn't understand anyone who could not appreciate nor see or feel the intensely heart-wrecking beauty, life and passion behind this drama. It is one of the most unforgettable stories with depth, rhythmn, rhyme and perfect music! jang geun suk is reaaaaly awesome The chemistry between the main characters both younger and older versions is just so moving!
