Love Rain premieres to low ratings
by girlfriday
Today marks the premiere of KBS’s new throwback drama Love Rain, the new project from famed season drama PD Yoon Suk-ho, starring Jang Geun-seok and Yoona. But despite the young starpower, the series premiered to disappointing ratings: 5.8%.
Both new Monday-Tuesday dramas were dwarfed by the reigning leader, MBC’s 50-episode Light and Shadow, which is enjoying a ratings resurgence since the end of History of a Salaryman. Light/Shadow recorded 20.6%, on its second week of over-twenty-percent ratings. SBS’s Fashion King, now in its second week, went down to 9.2%.
I caught the first episode of Love Rain, and it’s definitely got PD Yoon’s stamp on it — it’s atmospheric, moody, and beautiful, and is populated by characters that drive me bonkers. I grew up on his dramas, so there’s certainly a comfort-food familiarity there. It had touches of all his dramas, particularly Feelings and Summer Scent, with the campus setting and mood. At times it feels like a long music video rather than a series pilot, but it does have a breathtaking ambiance that can’t be ignored.
It’s just likely not going to be a runaway hit because it’s your mom’s drama — and not only because it’s set in the 70s, but because it feels like a classic kdrama with all its attendant trappings. Long suffering heroes/heroines, quotes from Love Story, etc. I mean, it’s basically like every story my parents told me about their youth, right down the cultural references. So despite the trendy young stars headlining it, it’s a story geared towards the PD/writer’s own generation.
Between Light/Shadow and Love Rain, I guess it’s pretty much going to be 70s Mondays for a good long while. Ya dig?

I stayed up to watch this, but now that i read this post I'll probably just turn in....
Poor poor JGS. I really do like him... why does he choose such loser projects? Bad luck!
Maybe it will get better once the second generation come on screen.

I guess that, like you, wed-thursday is offering a nice replacement for my kdrama weekly fix with "King 2 Hearts", we already know what's gonna happen(and how is gonna happen) but it's been fun and engaging. And bot Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi are freaking adorable! I want her to kick his butt again after what he did on ep 2!!! >=(

I watched the episode and.... aside being pretty (VERY pretty) to look at, this drama nothing more special......
Yoona'S character just look too plain and dead. I mean JGS is all LOVE looking to her and she is like, there a wall.
Guess the pd wanted her to be delicate and pure and all and she end up a boring pretty tree to look at.
I hope her character from future be more alive. Actually I think it'll be. And has amazing Lee Min Sook, so I'll give this a chance.
But the first episode was too slow and boring, pretty but boring.
For people saying Yoona is better here than You are my destiny, I disagree I prefer her character from You are my destiny much more than her dead character here.

Stopped watching Kdrama for a while after Shining Inheritance. 1.5 weeks ago i caught a glimpse of Heart Strings on cable tv and started to watch kdramas again. The show was blah but piqued my interest to watch You're Beautiful - which i avoided after the BoF mania (which i cringe at the the thought of watching that again - what was the fuss about anyway!). And then - i discovered JGS! Gosh he is weirdly gorgeous and act pretty well. Don't know whether to look at him as a guy or girl. But his deep voice is really attractive.
MSOAN - I am only at ep 2 - seems quite disappointing but I will get through it before concluding. Yes - i have read the recaps so I am watching this at my own risk.
Sarangbi - I didn't expect such low rating. The cinematography is gorgeous. I like the nostalgic feel of the 70s. But this show wouldn't appeal to the younger audience - even with yoona and jgs as leads. The kind of show that would make one more depressed after a bad day at work.
All said, I would still watch for the fact that my first kdrama was "Autumn in my heart". In other words, Yoon Suk Ho/Oh Soo Yun had me at hello.

Lol, I think a lot of people over on this site agree that BoF was a mess. As a fan of the manga,anime--even that weird anime movie that had nothing to do with anything, the j-drama, and the taiwanese drama (lol I know..it's a lot)...I have to say the korean version was just so bad. It started off well and then went all who knows where. Not to mention it could have ended 8 episodes ago. I still haven't watched the last episode....

The first episode of Mary started promising for me. However after that it was an endless downward slide. It gets frustrating to watch good story plots that were not followed up. It's such a waste because it can be so much better. It's such a disappointment because of the lousy and shoddy writers. The director should be held responsible too. The victims for the drama is the 3 leads. When actors take on a project they can hardly determine how the show would eventually turn out except be responsible for their own work - to act.

The first episode may be kind of slow but I'm expecting the plot to pick up and for the ratings to increase. Jang Geun Suk even said that the romance in the 70s portion is a bit slow but the 2012 portion is much faster-paced in comparison (and is said to feel like a completely different drama). I'm hoping that people will give the drama a chance and not just judge it based on low ratings for the first episode.
I also read too much of the 70s spoilers so I know pretty much everything that's going to happen but I don't know that much about the modern portion. Still I am enjoying the series so far:)

Its too early to tell.
Yoona is talented young actress. She just need some time and guidance. There are few good idol turn actress that is good like Uee and Eunjung and even Suzy.
I believe that an actor or actress, besides from a good script and a guide from the Director, you need to have a good sparing partner in a drama/movie. A good partner will help you to bring out the best in you.
I hope that JGS can do that with Yoona.

Very true: A drama is a collective work, and sometimes the magic comes from nowhere. Talent. Work. Chemistry.
That said, even a talented actor can't do nothing if the script is bad. How many times did i want to extract good actors from the screen to save them from the misery...
Bad shows, you know who you are...

JGS's head has gotten to big for his hat. His arrogance irks me. Remember watching his special a few weeks back, he is just popular in Japan and he called himself Prince of Asia !!?? In Love Rain news conference, he said he will do a dance with Yoona if ratings reached 40++ ? Maybe nobody wants to see them dance..... I'm a fan of Yoona but frankly speaking, I switched to Fashion King halfway. Besides nice settings.....reminds me of the Brady Bunch...nothing to talk about. Hope the ratings will pick up soon

I don't think you know him that well to judge that he is arrogant. People did not report the full things that he said , and gave others the impression that he was arrogant.
He calls himself Asia Prince, Heechul also called himself Big Space Star. What is the difference? They are all from chocoball, they have similar personalities and Heechul is being funny, while JKS is arrogant? Besides, he already mentioned many times calling himself Asia Prince is not because he was super famous in Asia, he knew he is still not super popular, he just call himself that because he wants to make that his goal. And since when is having a big dream an arrogant behaviour?
As for 40% rating, that is the reporter question, asking him what he would do if the ratings is that high and he answered. Other actors in other dramas also answered similar questions and they also said what they would do if the ratings are high, so why are you bashing JKS only?

oy, oy. I think it is more like the story is boring. If actors have pretty much nothing to do there, it seems they suck. Might not be.
you all seem to think YAB was an accidental hit for JGS. I think he still has talent though, but he´s stumbled upon non-suitable projects. he wants to be loved so much he´ll take anything.... if he can concentrate on acting instead of just being famous and distance himself from the constant public attention and affection for a while, he probably can deliver more great characters. but he is addicted to attention and he is distracted by it. He seems constantly aware of being a star and acting, instead of just enjoying the moment and letting loose.
I just think the whole pot is so boring. Nothing much to see, very slow...yeah, I am the ruined speedo-generation that wants constant change and tick. I can take slowness if there is tension, but there doesnt seem to be any. if the second episode is a sit-through as well, then it is really a waste.

I would still give it a chance even if the actors are not these 2 actors. I like that they selected experienced senior actors like Lee Mi Sook to be the parents in 2012. The scene when the old lovers meet again in 2012 should be emotionally charged and heartwrenching?!?
Just a sucker for moody romance, I supposed! For a moment, I was wondering if they should have casted Yongsama and Choi Ji Woo as the parents in 2012 just for the heck of it!

I think Korean taste(as well as international taste) regarding kdramas has been changing for the past years, and with recent off-beat, different dramas bringing new content and redoing clichés in innovative ways while making it big(like Salaryman, Padam Padam, Flower Boy, now with the King 2 Hearts, to put the most recent examples), this "classic" styled dramas are going to suffer. I wasn't particularly interested in Love Rain even when JGS is in it, seems like more of the same. Apparently I wasn't wrong with my initial impressions...

That's because they were on cable channels which aren't popular in general--if they were on one of the big 3 I feel confident they would have done extremely well. Also, they garnered high ratings unusual to other cable dramas, if I'm not mistaken. But that wasn't the point she was trying to make at all. She's saying that dramas are becoming more innovative, so something like Love Rain which seems styled after older dramas may not pique interest.

True. "You're Beautiful" didn't really have high ratings, but you can't deny all the buzz and hype it got for a drama of its kind. Then again, it was up against "Iris" at the time, so of course it had no chance at being a ratings hit. As a teen drama, it was very popular with its target demographic and it's been one of the most popular trendy dramas of recent years.

Exactly. Ratings doesn't always correlate with popularity and "buzz." For instance, weekend dramas that Korean housewives usually watch often get 20%~30% ratings, but they don't generate much buzz. On the other hand, You're Beautiful had low ratings, but was still a huge hit amongst the target demographic. It created huge buzz, but its target demographic aren't usually the people who tune in on TV. Lastly, You're Beautiful is still super popular. In 2011, the OST still sold around 50k. I don't think its popularity should be underestimated.

I think you are fairly wrong here. Get on the web and you'll realize YB is not only popular in Japan. I thought it's a pretty good romantic comedy and I am far from your so-called target audience. It was a huge surprise to see that it has gotten such a low rating when some badly executed Korean shows are getting high ratings. I have since learned never to trust ratings of the Korean viewership. Or you can say there are more people than you think who has similar taste as Japanese.

I actually agree with the arrogance part. So I am quite surprised that he can pull of quiet really well. When I think of JGS, I always picture him with bigger, over-the-top characters because of his personality so its very refreshing to see him do a kind-of backseat character.
You should give him more credit. The kid can act. He pulled off MSOAN, which was a train wreck and he carried most of the acting in You're Beautiful.

Here's the thing if Yoona wasn't beautiful she wouldn't get casted in drama's at all. As a SNSD fan i have to be honest her acting isn't great this is her what 3rd or 4th drama and she still gives me the same expressions. Yuri who just debut as an Actress is giving her character life and she is actually doing better than Yoona in giving off the actress feel. The drama has a nice plot may not be too original but i think it would have done better if seasoned actors like maybe song hye kyo paired with someone like won bin or something idk and to top it off they give her JGS who is also not that great of an actor sort of the blind leading the blind. I still think they could have a chance of higher ratings once the drama switches to the modern part but still it would have been better with a different lead because both need strong actors to carry them

But Yoona is good in her debut drama last time.
I agree that Yuri is much better actress for her first debut. I somehow think that, if you want to be a good actress.. For your debut, try play a bad one/second lead in a drama :-) Look at Eunjung in DH1 and Uee in YAB. But, above all.. You need to be talented and passionate like the both of them.
Better luck next time Yoona!

Really? I think JGS is a good actor. He can pull off crazy, and surprisingly, he can do this calm and collected character as well.
As for Yoona, I haven't seen any of her previous drama, but I thought she was okay here. Its not horrible.Major plus, I think her look and feel matches well with the drama. Although I wouldn't really know if she will fit in the time skip as well, I think she is holding her own for now.
I actually don't like Yuri in FK a little. She feels a bit "fake" in the drama. I like her a lot, but I don't feel like she fits in the drama the way the other actors do in FK.

The comments here are very odd. I'm on the side of the people who have experience watching shows and are willing to be patient.
As for the acting, these guys are still young. There is room for improvement. People are already discussing the mains picking a bad role when their counterpart characters haven't even entered the scene. Everyone thinks that acting is static and not dynamic? Anyone else see You Are My Destiny? Yoona's acting improved so much -granted it was over a long time, but there was improvement. As far as Jang Geun Suk, let's give more than 1 episode to throw Love Rain in the bin with Mary Stayed Out All Night and You Are My Pet.

I don't understand why I should be patient with people who are supposed to be professionals.
It annoys me that the whole media machine manufactures these "stars" and shoves them off this constant assembly line and onto some drama where they are praised to the skies even if they are talentless louts - why do we have to put up with this system? Why do we have to wait patiently for either the "product" to develop some experience or for the real talent to somehow, through luck alone, get their rightful spotlight?
I want to criticize the studios, the PDs, the whole process, whenever possible, for pushing third-rate work onto the public in order to feed their egos and shore up their little empires.

Ditto! PD Yoon is good, no argue! But he likes to copy and paste the ideas from other people's work though he has his own talents to be a good director. He is still in the 70's that he doesn't acknowledged or ignored that this is the cyber age and people know which story/scene or same lines come from and will compare and become frustrated and leave the drama. It is hard to point out to the elderly for their flaws. Bombed. Actually PD Yoon is not that elderly yet, he is in his 50s.

PD Yoon is kind of an auteur. If you go back to Friends or Wedding, you can tell he has a specific style (just not the money to fully do that style.)
One of the classic Yoon stylisms (which is similar to how Japanese dramas do it) is to shoot a lot of scenes with only a couple in a pretty wide-open frame. He wants to create that feel that they're the only two people in the world.
You'll notice that each show has specific color motifs. Characters tend to wear the same kind of clothes or colors, and these colors often match the backgrounds. He may have overdone this with Spring Waltz, but it was still effective IMO.
His dramas are famous for their music, but what doesn't get recognized as often is that how quiet/silent his shows actually are. In that sense, it IS old school, because 90s K-dramas didn't draw from K-pop as much as they do now.

He also has his characters do a lot of coordinated walking (a la commercials/music videos), which ought to be cheesy/silly, but in his hyper-Kirkian foundation, it just works in terms of pure visual pleasure. Everything (actors, storyline, episodic structure) is in service of mood and romantic texture.

Hmm, giggled when the episode started out with the Love Story theme song. It kinda tips its head as to what kind of 70s Love Story it wanted to be. ;)
I love Yoon Seuk Ho's melodramas, but frankly they don't really fit the tastes of contemporary Korean viewing audience anymore. To put in perspective, Summer Scent and Spring Waltz were single digit performers, and his company's production dramas (Snow Queen, When At Night) did poorly as well. They're primarily made for the Hallyu audience (Summer Scent was a huge hit in Japan, Snow Queen was popular in China), and you can think of it as a marketing vehicle to hit the okasan audience for Jang Geun Suk and Yoona. To be honest, Winter Sonata was considered a mild disappointment when that came out as well. It only became famous after its second life in Japan.
But . . having said that, I LOVE YOON SEUK HO's melodramas. Japanese audiences went nuts for his dramas, because his style meshed well with the mid-90s Golden Age of Renzoku. There's gorgeous scenery. There's young actors who kind of "non-act" through their scenes, to as to suggest a sincere naturalism. Bland has never been more passionate and realistic! Much like a Won Kar Wai film, it's sadness made pretty, color coordinated melancholy, all hermetically sealed in a world full of poetic, self pity. I love it. I crave it. I'm so happy when it rains! The storyline is besides the point. It's just choreography to get you to the next pretty scene.
For fans of Yoon Seuk Ho, there's a compelling gestalt he uniquely achieves in his melodramas. The ying and yang of the world simply exists through the lovelorn eyes of his characters. It is as if the natural world is a canvas for love. That is how children love fairy tales, and he brings that fairy tales into the melodrama format.

Unfortunately, not all of us are like you...I'm one of the simple viewers who sits in-front of the tv and if I like it I'll keep on watching, if not next channel...
I don't analyze like you do...so I hope you can do a recap of this drama if dramabeans won't recap this...and perhaps when I drop-by and read, I will change my mind...
of why not start a blog about Love Rain...I will be one of your readers and perhaps you can help me revisit it...
How about that? deal? you'll do the recap?

I don't get all the talk about recap. Seriously this kind of dramas is to feel, not to ask some one else what's going on. For a drama that needs the heart to appreciate there's no way you'll like it by knowing from a third party what's going on.

I'm not a fan of Yoona or Jang Keun Suk. I'm window shopping for the kind of drama I will watch during my free time....as a consumer (or viewer) in this case... I watched episode 1 and I have decided not to watch...
episode 1 of any drama is like the shop window of a store. you entice people to come in and buy the product.

Although I don't plan to watch this (just not interested), I'm really surprised by the low ratings. :O I hope for the PD's sake that it picks up as of today.

Honestly, I think Yoona would have done so much better if they didn't keep pushing the lead role to her. She may be huge as an idol but you've got to understand that the audience for kpop and kdramas are totally different and just because you're great as an idol doesn't make you great as an actress.
I think Yoona's acting is okay at best(and that is me being generous) plus when I read that JGS was casted as her beau, I cringed just thinking what other things can possibly go wrong.
Though if I can give the drama something, it's the fact that it is shot so beautifully and the scenes kinda feel dreamy and warm, and I had that floating feeling in my tummy watching it(I love when that happens!)

According to TNmS, the third episode of Fashion King got 12.3% nationwide ratings.
Anyways, I feel sort of psychic because I've had serious doubts about this drama ever since I heard that this drama was going to be headed by Yoon PD, Yoona and Jang Geun Seok. Despite everyone else around me buying into the hype, I held on to my predictions that this drama would be a flop/get low ratings. Lo and behold...I was right. Several other people, including Javabeans, I think, also expressed their concerns about whether or not this "analog" romance would resonate with todays' viewers. I think it's safe to say that sentimental dramas, makjang/melo dramas, and tragic dramas are out of style. Current drama trends veer towards comedy, fusion sageuks, and whimsical magic (49 Days, Secret Garden, Rooftop Prince, etc).
Love Rain probably did poorly because of the "trendy young stars" headlining it. Sorry, but I don't think Yoona and Jang Geun Suk were ready to carry such a huge project on their shoulders. Son Ye Jin and Jo In Sung were able to make this sort of cliche storyline work beautifully in The Classic. Most dramas headlined with young stars tend to do poorly in the ratings department (Heartstrings, Dream High S2). Notable exceptions would be Dream High S1, Boys Over Flowers and You're Beautiful. Generally, dramas that appeal to ahjummas do the best in ratings. Unfortunately, it seems like our ahjummas aren't in the mood for sappy, sentimental, slow-paced dramas.
Anyways, this drama bored me to tears. Despite the beautiful surface, there's not much substance. The storyline is so cliche, the characters are bland and one-dimensional, the dialogue is cheesy, etc. Based on the preview clips, I find the modern characters' interactions to lack chemistry as well. I just find it really hard to believe that this is supposed to be a star-crossed, significant romance, one that the 70s characters NEVER forgot, when all it's based on is moony-eyed silent stares.

The other thing is, the drama is being written by Oh Soo Yun. She's probably the #2 or #3 Hallyu writer now, but most of her own dramas typically become cult/sub-mania hits rather than rating hits.
More or less, she writes "shoujo for adults." Yoona better get ready, because she'll have to do some epic crying through 2nd half of the show. She tried bucking that trend for her Star's Lover script (her best work), but toward the end of the show, the waterworks was flooding their broken hearts!

One thing you need to have if you're filming a melo is leads that can act. They carry the drama for god's sake. Last melo I watched was Miss Ripley and I genuinely loved it exactly because of some kickass acting that was going on there. I love JGS and I would continue to watch for him because he's pretty to look at (and the drama in general is pretty to look at) but Yoona is the problem for me. I can't feel anything coming from this girl; she's wooden(she was terrible in the umbrella scene) Damn, and I hoped this would be at least ok.

Just watched this drama this morning. I give a credit the ways scene of the drama was captured since its really beautiful and alive. about the plot, well, I imagine that if so ye jin cast the drama as lead actress, it will be better than yoona. I am not so ye jin's fan but I loved how she delivered her role in the classic and other melo type such as summer scent and love concerto. I'm not familiar with her previous works, but I feel she is so wooden. she is pretty, but its all I can see. maybe, she wants to act as an innocent, pure lady but its failed and all I can see just a blank stares from her eye. I think this drama is too heavy for young actress like her and maybe she should start as a co-star instead of lead. for JGS, I give a credit the ways he look at yoona, so lovely and passionately. but, after drama and drama, all I can say, same expression. Frankly, I feel like watched Hwang Jini where the way he delivered his love to Ha Ji Wo just like he's doing in HwangJini, more than 6 years ago where I enjoy watched him on that drama, but not in this drama. It is too early to assume this drama will be one of other drama that has good PD and scriptwriter but end up with poor ratings. let just hope this drama will receive a good review from the audiences.

i love his new hair-cut :) so much for what i've expected. love rain is very beautiful, maybe because i love being classic, but it's more on the essence of what really LOVE RAIN is all about. kinda sad about the rating, otoke? where are the jang geun suk oppa's fans? the drama is so appealing, maybe the other drama too. but let's still support jang geun suk oppa's drama! this is a different side of him, and i love it wholeheartedly. fighting sukkie! the writer, the director, the staffs, the casts, REALLY DID A GREAT JOB doing this drama! i feel the love, i feel how deep the story is. I LOVE IT! about the acting of the lead female, it's better and of course jang geun suk is a great actor, especially seeing his old movies. let's not talk things awfully for them, it's kinda depressing if you are in their shoes. Fighting LOVE RAIN! whatever rating it is, i still believe in the STORY OF THIS DRAMA :) in addition, hoping that in the end, no one will die and let the love continue by their offspring :) GO GO GO! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!

I like JGS as an actor. I think his arrogance is a little tongue in cheek so I can live with it.
But I really think his popularity in Japan kind of ruined him. I wish he would stop the "milking money from Japanese ahjunmas thing" and just work on being a good actor in good projects. He's over-exposed to the point of being ridiculous and his commercials are so cheesy they make me cringe.

Damn people, so much prejudice! If you're gonna skip this show, then just do it gracefully - stop prancing the hate all 'round. yes it is prolly your (and my) mothers' story etc but these judgments - I think they're going a little too overboard. There are elements that still work, I think and therefore there are enthusiasts of said-elements, enough to tune in to the show. I'd appreciate it if those snarking their dislikes do so with some basis, not just "oh he's (PD) so yesterday" or "JGS is so OTT but not working" or :"Yoona's acting sucks balls" - let's actually make sound judgment, otherwise staying hush is not a bad idea at all methinks.

Actually this is not surprise to me at all. Who ever was in charge of publicity/advertising fail miserably. There was no real hype about this drama at all, and now is reflected on the rating.
JGS needs to pick better roles, stronger, action pack roles. Something that viewers can go "ohh wow never though JGS can play that kind of role"....He has been focusing too much on the Japanese market for the last couple of years that I feel like he has in some way neglected his Korean fan based, well that my personal opinion. JGS has the potetial and talent to become an serious young actor, but he wasting away by picking very radom roles.
As for Yoona I just can't stand her, not even as a singer. The girl is just a pretty face, she looks at the camera and is like nothing is there, she gives blank stares, which drives me crazy.
On the other hand, the cocept of the story is not bad is basically "star cross lovers" they meet in the 70's in college and for some reason they get seperated, 30's something years go by and they meet again. Then we have their kids meet and fall for each other, so basically destiny is redeeming itself. I think the PR did an awful job in trying to target the audience, terrible move if they were baking on JGS and Yoona idol appeal. Sorry Rating done.

Someone should fire the music director on Lights and Shadows. The series is set in the 70's. Why is Son Dam Bi singing all these 80's English songs? If only the music director did a little research. Hate to be a perfectionist, but we expect better from K-dramas.
