Love Rain premieres to low ratings
by girlfriday
Today marks the premiere of KBS’s new throwback drama Love Rain, the new project from famed season drama PD Yoon Suk-ho, starring Jang Geun-seok and Yoona. But despite the young starpower, the series premiered to disappointing ratings: 5.8%.
Both new Monday-Tuesday dramas were dwarfed by the reigning leader, MBC’s 50-episode Light and Shadow, which is enjoying a ratings resurgence since the end of History of a Salaryman. Light/Shadow recorded 20.6%, on its second week of over-twenty-percent ratings. SBS’s Fashion King, now in its second week, went down to 9.2%.
I caught the first episode of Love Rain, and it’s definitely got PD Yoon’s stamp on it — it’s atmospheric, moody, and beautiful, and is populated by characters that drive me bonkers. I grew up on his dramas, so there’s certainly a comfort-food familiarity there. It had touches of all his dramas, particularly Feelings and Summer Scent, with the campus setting and mood. At times it feels like a long music video rather than a series pilot, but it does have a breathtaking ambiance that can’t be ignored.
It’s just likely not going to be a runaway hit because it’s your mom’s drama — and not only because it’s set in the 70s, but because it feels like a classic kdrama with all its attendant trappings. Long suffering heroes/heroines, quotes from Love Story, etc. I mean, it’s basically like every story my parents told me about their youth, right down the cultural references. So despite the trendy young stars headlining it, it’s a story geared towards the PD/writer’s own generation.
Between Light/Shadow and Love Rain, I guess it’s pretty much going to be 70s Mondays for a good long while. Ya dig?

I wish JB/GF would do a "recap" for the SUFBB special that aired yesterday. So much cuteness and behind-the-scenes bromance. ^__^

I'm not interested in it because I'm still recovering from JGS's You're My Pet movie disaster...
Plus, there is still the definitely more awesome SUFBB that I need to finish, AND I watched the first two totally cracking episodes of Rooftop Prince today (and will try King2Heart next since the recaps on Dramabeans sounded highly promising).
So much good stuff, so no time for the things I'm only half or not into. Maybe if I read some good reviews, but at the moment it's just not on the top of my list.

I put both Mary and My Pet in the same bag. Awful.
I believe JGS has had his (short) time of glory. But it ended after the excellent You're Beautiful where he was good.
Too many young talented (and manly) actors out there. His career is finished imo. He should enlist in the army or change his image, like Kim Bum did with Padam Padam (but without destroying his health).

He's too young to say that his career is over right now as he has plenty of time to turn the tracks. Yes, he's had a bad couple of years but he still has 4 more to go before he has to enter the army. He's had more lauded performances and succeses (not saying those two go together) than half the actors in his generation, also whether or not his work is doing well in Korea, he IS big in Japan right now which means he will get more dramas no matter what.

I was thinking the same too. However, it seems that he will be able to do a save from Love Rain. Or should I say Love Rain can halt his declining process. He is still a good actor but Mary and My Pet were not productions that he should have taken.

Recovering from a badly written drama, a boy who looks like my kid sister, and a grossly over exposed Hallyu celebrity.
JSG has talent, but he's choosing to go the exposure/celebrity take-over-Asia-become-a world celebrity route rather than the artist route....
Too bad.

Well, Mary Stayed out All Night was one of the first k-dramas I ever watched... so I can't totally diss it. I mean, there so much in it that didn't make sense AT ALL (most of all the marriage Mae-Ri's Dad set up for her - if anyone forges a marriage contract with my name on it, I'm done with them and all the must-respect-your-parents and am taking them to court!). But I did enjoy the JGS/MGY pairing and the eye candy of KJW....

Well, I'd just toss Mary and My Pet into a trash bag and toss it onto the curb (and hopefully not get caught for massive littering). Oh wait, I didn't call Mary and My Pet "trash" right there. Seriously. It wasn't that bad, but very disappointing. And yes, a disaster. But I think I might watch Love Rain, and even though this writer tends to have too much amnesia and birth secrets, there's a reason why so many people loved Winter Sonata (especially Japan, Taiwan. People went crazy over it. Yongsama!) There's something addictive about his dramas. And the visuals are great too. I dunno, I'd give it a try, and see how it turns out. Though I'm not one to stick with a show if I lose my interest halfway through.

@anais ... I don't mind him with longer hair (I generally prefer longer hair, like the length of Do-il in SUFBB), but some of the hairstyles (long and short) that he has had are just awful.
But the buzz cut looks edgy, in a good way, and does suit him as well.

March 27, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Canxi, remember he tried edgy in "Case of the Itaewon Homicide." That didn't work out so well either. & if you want to see some crazy JGS hair, check out his Japan concert tour. He insisted on attaching a big pile of blonde fur (or perhaps dead animal, not sure) to his head. Somehow this was supposed to make him look like an Asian prince.

It's always sad to hear a drama is mistreated by the ratings, but i can totally understand why. The all look is old school (cough*dusty*cough): You couldn't have me watching this, even if i were paid (like Winter Sonata: Praise it as much as you want, i will never watch such a tearjerker). The main cast is unknown to mature viewers and JGS is better in well directed comedy for me. There is definitely a dissonance between the audience targeted and the cast.
It's funny to see how Lights and Shadows is working (although it uses the same nostalgia touch). The drama started slow but has doubled its ratings since the start. Maybe i should give it a try.
Fashion King is a drama to play drinking games: One shot everytime YAI is shirtless, and everytime he does the Hand to Mouth (thanks Jomo). Just with the 3 first eps, we will all roll under the table...

I have been watching Light and Shadow and love all the songs/music played in the background (not OSTs) because I left Korea at that time (around ep 25) and that is Korea (and songs) that I remember.
I was also excited to recognize the incidents they dealt with in the story that I knew (like massive entertainer roundup for drug use).
Plot has a feel of 'Giant' and well written by the famous writer (who also wrote Hur Jun, SangDo, All in, JuMong, Iris, Swollow the sun, Midus etc). This show deserves the high rating.

BTW I am giving a try to LR even though I don't like either of leads because
1) I loved Autumn Tale (Still think of this drama whenever I hear that OST piece including when KHJ played that piece in Japan).
2) It is my generation (songs!! Lee JangHee, Song ChangSik, Sand Pebbles!! Actually SM in SM enter was my alumni. Yep I am PRETTY old.)
3) I am drama addict, trying to watch all.

I watched 1st ep of LR. Boy, songs really made me nostalgic. Song like 'Na ADdakKye (what should I do)' by Sand Pebbles (This song was also in lovers in prague).
Sand Pebbles was the first vocal group formed in my college. I used to see their performance in the school auditorium (didn't know they continued). I don't remember seeing SM (Lee SuMan in SM Ent.) in the stage though I loved his song. (BTW I found their performance in 70's in youtube). Someone mentioned the songs that SonDamBi sang in Light and Shadow are ridiculous (not 70's), but I took it as modern flavor they added along with OSTs.
Another thing: fashin that time was mini skirt and bell bottom pants, but I don't remember the socks with heels (I thought this was way before).
Totally unrelated: The famed director for dramas Hur Joon, SangDo, DaeJangGeum, and Isan is also from same college. So we all are alumni, just a several years apart - small world lol.

I've seen the first two of RTP and K2H and love them both so far - there's so much good going on right now that I don't know if I'll EVER get to Love Rain. Not a surprise here. Jang Geun Suk is not known as a ratings maker. Even You're Beautiful's highest rating recorded was just 11.9%. His projects do better with Japanese ajummas who love him to death.
Yoona is a gorgeous girl, but her acting, though more improved than in You're My Destiny and Cinderella Man is still lacking. I remember what a korean friend told me awhile back that Yoona doesn't have enough star power to be a primetime series lead actress yet and that getting good ratings in her drama You're My Destiny meant nothing since its a daily drama. Getting high ratings for Daily Dramas and Weekend Dramas means squat, unless you've already succesfully proven yourself at least once in the difficult ratings battle of primetime miniseries.
Their agencies also need to calm down on overpromoting them. Seeing everyother article talking about Yoona's ethereal beauty, as if we viewers aren't already aware that she is beautiful... is grating on peoples nerves...and every other article released boasting about Jang Geun Suk's overwhelming popularity makes me wanna vomit. Too much of anything is bad, cause the expectations become really high and when it doesn't, it's bound for failure.
I really like the setting and the cinematography of this series, every scene is breathtaking, so I will stick it out 4 more episodes to see if I like it.

I don't understand fan of drama nowadays; they don't want a serious drama again. All they want is a comedy, always comedy. Javabeans and girlfriday too. Girlfriday said she was afraid king 2 hearts was serious, now she happy because it's a comedy. I amthe only person who like serious drama like snow queen, spring waltz? The only genre they accept the serious it's in sageuk because it's historic. love rain is historic too; it's the 70's.
It's not nostaglia in pegorative term, it's historic recontruction like sageuk. Then don't expect a modern love story.it's a pure and classic love story.

I'm not sure if I able to watch this kind of drama or not. I admit the scene is beautiful but the plot is too melo. the audience get tired to watch this genre for 70 mins and the story is predictable. I think if this kind of story turns to movie, it will be blasting, just happened for The Classic and Once in a Summer where I loved the plot although its really melo's type.

The 70's isn't considered historic, though. It's a period drama, but not historic. The time setting is too recent.
And not true, people have preferences, some people don't like melodramas because let's face it when you're having a bad day at work or school the last thing you want to do is watch something that will make you bawl your eyes out. People like to laugh, it's natural.
It's OK if Love Rain is serious, I just think that people weren't interested in it to BEGIN with. For example, I was very interested in King 2 Hearts. I wanted to watch it even when it seemed like it was going to be more melodramatic. The plot is interesting, the characters, the costumes...etc...It makes me happy that it's funny, yeah--because I get to laugh. Nothing wrong with that. If you like dramas on the more serious, tear-jerky side by all means, please. But don't bring down everyone with different tastes than you.

I totally agree with you, melodrama is probably not a cup-of-tea of lots of viewers. My friend always says to me "I'm already stressed out with work, etc, I only want to watch something funny at the end of the day. Why do I have to watch something which will make me more stressed?" That's why she prefers Rooftop Prince rather than King 2Hearts or Love Rain.
People have their own preferences, that's why we are entertained with so many different drama genres.
But I love melodrama, and episode 1 Love Rain is good. I expect good cinematography from the PD and I got it. The acting so far is okay (I'm not a fan of both leads, so I'm not biased) and the spark of chemistry is getting there (even though not quite up the par with HJW - LSGi chemistry in King 2Hearts). The scenery is beautiful, the music is nice, so Love Rain will be a keeper even know I know I will need lots of tissues for the later episodes.

I agree with you getoba. For me, I fell in love with Korean dramas because it's an efffective tearjerker. I like dramas to be melo, angsty, and "DRAMATIC." If I want to laugh, I will watch variety, skits, gags, but not "ROMCOM" (Romcom just doesn't make me laugh)
It's my personal preference though, I like each one of those genre to be extreme when served to me.
Yey!!! to:
EXTREME MELODRAMA
EXTREME COMEDY
Nay!!! to:
Romantic Comedy which is not really funny and not really dramatic (unless it has great dialogue between characters like King 2 Hearts and Secret Garden)

Actually ppl need to realize that Romantic comedy needs to be handled 'with care'...some dramas brand themselves romantic comedy but fail to deliver...when this happens it's just annoyance through and through...*oh it's that laugh again* oh that slapstic knock again* (I'm not gonna name names...!!!)

"The only genre they accept the serious it’s in sageuk because it’s historic. love rain is historic too; it’s the 70′s. "
My perspective . . .it's not that he wanted to make a movie about Korea in the 70s. It's that he wanted to make a 70s Hollywood melodrama, which essentially paid homage to Love Story. Thus, the idyllic Ivy League-ish setting. The emphasis on a bookish male student and a unassuming ingenue. Etc. etc.
The Seasonal dramas, in terms of music, look, and characters, have always seemed influenced by 60s/70s Hollywood. Now, he makes that connection explicit.

So true. When a section of the drama population decides to trust blindly some self-proclaimed bloggers as experts or the ultimate bible of dramas, this is what you get, aka 'if so-and-so says it's not good I'm not going to watch it'. They forget that bloggers themselves have their preferences and biases. I remember one drama blogger who was so bias that she dismissed a very excellent drama after a few episodes and thus misleading plenty of drama fans a chance to watch something good. IMHO, if one wants to be a critique on dramas, one got to be impartial and watch the show from beginning to end. Then you can say whatever your opinion of it is. Otherwise, one is not much an expert as she leads others to believe.

I must say that I agree that this is not your everyday drama. I watched it this morning (so this review comes from someone who has at least seen the first episode and not someone who's only judging ;)
The pace was slow but this is a melo so the point is to make people really feel the emotions. The drama was also able to successfully showcase the relationship between all the characters and we know from the start what we've gotten ourselves into. The main cast seem charming (but I haven't really gotten attached to any of them yet because of the variety of secondary characters) and it definitely has the PD's style. The scenes were captured beautifully and even the acting by the two leads was good (you should give it a try if that is what's stopping you ;)
This is a melo so of course the pace is slow, especially since this is the pilot, but it is receiving good reviews from the Korean press so the ratings should shoot up anytime soon (after starting from such a low it can hopefully only go up from here)
I've watched my share of drama and this story is good enough to keep me wanting for more.

(they keep their eyes on computer game and such) The hallyu waves things there isn't as big as abroad people think...
to judge whether a series or movie or whatever the performance considers good or bad is not from the high or low the ratings is, but how far it carries your heart along with the story board...

Not sure why there are negative comments about this drama. I watched the entire episode in Korean with no subtitles and I loved it. Yes, I have a Jang Keun Suk bias but he's such a deliciously expressive actor who doesn't even need to speak in order to express a huge range of emotion.
Only the first 5 episodes are taking place in the 70s era so there is a lot to look forward to. What this drama is doing, which a lot of dramas don't, is developing the characters and giving them a background. Most dramas just drop the characters in your lap and tell you "This is the one you should like" instead of letting you develop your own opinion. The first episode is doing a wonderful job of introducing us, the viewer, to an array of characters with there own motivations.
I think it is important for people to develop their own opinions.

Agree with ya. I haven't seen the first episode yet but this is a melo so it's slowly starting to set up the storyline with the parents in the 70s and we know they don't get to be together so the kids which are the main cast in the 2012s that are the lead--that's where the story is and I'm already hoping for a happy ending. ^^
But people just have different opinions. Some just want a wham bam start in the drama but not all dramas are the same.
I am hoping for the rating to go up when it gets to the good part and the story is more interesting then just setting up the plot.

I saw a lot of complaint about the fact the setting is the 70's, people said is vintage, is old. If love rain is too vintage, too old to watch why a lot people watch sungkyunkwan scandal, chuno, princess man, moon embracing the sun, it's very VERY old? it's joseon era.

You are getting it all wrong. Not all dramas involve twist and turn plots. You'll probably only be satisfied with detective shows then? And there is a good storyline in Love Rain. Just remember, some shows actually involve the heart more while others focus on brains and most actually only on eyes (candy). And, isn't all love-stories and many other genres predictable? I can tell you the ending of almost all dramas right from the start. It's the way the story is told, baby!

Please, don't associate Titanic from James Cameron with Korean melodramas, even the best ones. The only common points is that both are sad stories, and yes we know how it ends... But the rest is just incomparable.
You know what i would like to see? JGS with shaved head, playing a killer or a druggie in a movie like Ewan Mc Gregor for Trainspotting. THAT would be a blast, and that would help his career. But i can't believe he is a convincing prince charming anymore. No testosterone, i'm sorry. He looks like a doll for prepubescent girls. And really, i didn't have that feeling when he was in YAB. A lot of american movies are bad. The majority these days if we are honest. And that's why i jumped ship to watch Asian productions mind you. I don't care about the nationality of a movie or a drama (btw, i'm French, and i'm able to acknowledge when our own movies suck... So i'm not defending Hollywood here). Titanic is a masterpiece and no one can say the contrary: 1st at BO and 1st for the Oscars (a movie produced with American money, a Canadian Director and an International cast). So yes it's incomparable. You can check for yourself.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120338/
I watch a ton of asian dramas and movies (12 dramas at the same time and 1 or 2 movies a week), and yes, a few are very good, others are entertaining, and others are just boring remakes of what have been done before and i fast forward without guilt. The good writers in Korea can be counted with my ten fingers, and the geniuses... I let you decide. If i didn't respect the hard work (and the natural skills) of those who make use of their brains to produce good scripts, then i wouldn't be here commenting at DB. :)

I think that last statement is silly to say, no offense. I mean unless you have seen a complete year of American cinema, there is no way you can possibly judge that with such confidence.
Also if no one saw the quality of asian movies and dramas, no one would be on this site...
The Titanic is a completely different ball game than a 16-20 episode series. It's like comparing an apple to an orange. Both fruits but that's it. So like Mysti said, both sad stories...but yeah, that's it. Nothing else to compare. It's not because it's "a big American movie".

I mean unless you have seen a complete year of American cinema, there is no way you can possibly judge that with such confidence.
I have to agree with you there.
For me, I may like watching various shows and movies from all over the world, but that also include American shows and movies. American shows are still pretty good (hey, I can't live without my dose of NCIS, Bones, Grey's Anatomy, TBBT, etc), but I have to agree that it really is getting harder to find movies in Hollywood that aren't just action packed or remakes or reboots. But American Cinema isn't just made up of Hollywood movies because the Indie market is just as packed with good, well rounded films. Personally, I'm not a fan of Titanic, but I do acknowledge its acolytes. This constant comparison between Korean (on a broader scale Asian) Cinemas/Shows and American Cinema/Shows is kind of getting old and tiresome. Every country has something to offer when it comes to their shows/movies/films. I watch a show/movie because it seems interesting and worth the time it takes to watch it regardless of its national origins.

There are some things I think Korea does that America doesn't in some genres (like there is a lot more character motivation), but I don't think I would spend my time seriously comparing and forming an opinion on who does what better. Different place, different style. What's the use? Why not just enjoy the variety, lol.

I am director, scriptwriter and movie critic on radio in france. You could not imagine the number of european, american, asian movies than i saw in my life. film of all period of cinema. I watch drama with the eye of a profesional and a movie lover. I remark fan of dramas are influenced by the fact they consider dramas like american soap or telenovela, or series like gossip girls just because they treat about love.
drama are more comperable to movie in the use of the space, the use of the music, the construction of the scene and the construction of the dramaturgie than american series.
For me spring waltz is more cinematographic in this contruction and plans than Lost for exemple.
Chuno or princess man are more cinematographic than Rome or games of thrones.
It will be too long to explain all the details. It's a shame than occidental audiances don't know enough the wonderful japanese and korean drama.

getoba I agree with you. Cinematography wise I always find that the Japanese and in recent years the Koreans are doing a much better job than Hollywood. I still remember how Kurosawa left the American directors dumbfounded (should we say that Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg and Lucas were all smitten). I can try to recall some beautiful and cinematographic scenes in European movies but I'm trying hard to recall which American movies had left me leaving the theater in awe with their cinematography skills. Maybe I've seen too many to recall one that gets stuck in the mind though. But I know I've enjoyed countless Japanese and Korean movies and TV dramas that's simply beautiful or breathtaking. So much so that sometimes it's become a given.

we do watched the kind of movies like that. but, it's movie and took only 2 hrs and of course it really enjoyable. but when this kind of genre turns to drama, it takes an effort to watch seriously. moreover, it's 16 eps. its not about 70's problem, light and shadow received a good feedback from the audiences since it has been inserted a humor value in the drama, just like sungkyukwan, princess man, METS and chuno's plot is unpredictable that made the audience hardly wait to see what happen next. I do think this drama is good and has wonderful cinematography, but nowadays, most of the audience are not too craving this kind of genre and maybe 10 years ago it is, its not all about romantic comedy since wild romance is rom-com but still received poor rating, the audiences are prefer to different styles.

You are not even in the mood to see if this is the one better project. I too was disappointed with his recent projects but I gave this drama a chance for two reasons 1) this drama is not only the work of him alone - I didn't watch the drama because of him 2) I still trust that he can act though he may have made a bad choice as an actor recently. And so, with these 2 reasons I watched Love Rain and I am not disappointed. And oh, your choice of words sounds like you have an axe to grind.

Whoa! I totally glossed over the fact that Light and Shadow is gonna be a long running drama (hey, 50 episodes is long to me). As for Love Rain. *shrugs* You win some, you lose some, but it just ain't my cup of tea. Heh.

I knew I forgot something! I was waiting for SU:FBB's replacement on tvN. Thanks for reminding me about The Marriage Plot. I had to look up its premiere date to make sure I didn't miss it last night. Something to look forward to next week!

Absolutely, lol. It looks like it's going to be really cute and if I recall the lead guy is a decent kisser. Come on, Drama Gods! Don't let me down.

This doesn't surprise me, at all. if you didn't grow up with it, I think those slow-paced melos are hard to take - I'm 50, so they should appeal to me age-wise, but I'll take a fast-paced drama any day. As for the leads, neither one of them has much expressive range. I've never been impressed with JGS - in YB he was a petulant boy, and nothing since has delved beneath a cutesy surface gloss. Only the Japanese could see him (with the same hairstyle that I had when I was 15!) as Hallyu gold...just goes to show what decades' worth of Johnny boys will do to your taste.

No energy to talk about it at the moment. I expected the ratings will be 15% and above. IMO, PD Yoon relies too much on his own lovelorn past and the writer is still inside the 4 seasons cocoon. How many times do the 50 somethings want to get the nostalgia of first love era?
It is not the young actors' fault. It is the director who can't get out of his time warp. GSK is popular in Japan for other talents and his fan base is his own age range so we can't assume that all Japanese women will like the drama blindly.

I am sucker for melodramas like this espescially coming from the seasons PD, however, I think too much news releases and spoilers hurt them because even I, who's crazy about PD Yoon's dramas became bored and due to all the spoilers and news reports about this drama, everything became so predictable. So it kinda takes the fun out of wanting to watch further.

i think some peope talk about Yoona's bias or JGS's bias and not bothering to read about their reviews. But aren't these people also being too prejudice that they already have opinions about the drama and not giving the drama a chance.
I would say this drama exceeded my expectation ( maybe mine was a bit low since i don't enjoy his work after winter sonata ). I expected the story to build up very slowly but the pace of the drama was faster than i thought and i half expected Yoona to be the same like in Cinderella Man but she is much better now. Still cannot say she is very good but at least i don't feel like rolling my eyes when i see her act. Still, i would prefer a real actress to act as i believe it would make the drama better.
I find some of the scenes to be very cute and it is very different from recent k-dramas which all kind of have the same winning formula. I find it a refreshing change to go back and watch melodramas.
I hope to see an improvement in the ratings as i think they do not deserve such bad ratings. This drama is so much better than Dream High 2.

quite sad to see that love rain had such low ratings. Even jang geun seuk/yoona's popularity couldn't boost it up. :(
But hopefully this drama is not the type to just fail right away and just become junk. It would be such a waste for the PD's comeback. Esp. since he was very famous for his endless love series.

Its to be expected. Yoona's huge popularity is just as an idol but as far as acting is concerned, she is just a C list actress in korea. Popularity as an idol is totally different from popularity as an actress.
Just because she is enjoying a huge amount of popularity as an idol doesn't mean that she'll also enjoy the same popularity and success as an actress.
Just look what happened to Lee Hyori...Hyori is one of the most popular solo artist, but when she tried her luck in acting (3 Leaf Clover and If In Love Like Them), she bombed big time!

Well that's because Hyori's acting sucked big time. Haha. I love her but she just isn't an actress.
