Ji Hyun-woo headlines another time-traveling fantasy drama
by javabeans
javabeans: Lordy, ANOTHER time-tripping, fantasy-sageuk, Joseon-to-modern drama!
girlfriday: Seriously? Now THAT’s gotta be the real competition for deadest horse ever.
javabeans: So it stars Ji Hyun-woo (A Thousand Kisses, Birth of the Rich), and it’s also got the 300-year time difference, with a time warp. In the Joseon era the hero is an upright Confucian scholar whose family falls victim to a conspiracy and is killed… and then he falls for an actress? And then he’s trying to rescue Queen In-hyun… wuh? I’m so confused.
girlfriday: He travels forward AND back? Why is there an actress?
javabeans: Oh, so in the present day the heroine is an actress who plays the part of Queen In-hyun in a drama called New Jang Heebin. (Jang Heebin is a royal concubine who is remembered for being a scheming femme fatale, who has been dramatized in numerous works. Most recently Lee So-yeon played her in Dong Yi. She was concubine to King Suk-jong, who was married to Queen In-hyun, played by Park Ha-sun in Dong Yi.)
girlfriday: Wait, so he comes to the future and falls for the actress playing the part of the woman he loved in a drama within the drama? Oh that’s not confusing. Though I guess in some ways, I like that better than the whole doppelganger thing in Rooftop.
javabeans: I don’t know if he was in love with the real Queen In-hyun, but apparently the hero was her faithful supporter. He is actually in the midst of plotting to restore her to power when he gets the time-swap to 2012… Can you imagine how confused he is when he meets New Queen In-hyun and is all, Who the hell are you?
girlfriday: And runs onto the set wielding one of the prop swords!
javabeans: It’ll be like one of Yoo Seung-ho’s time-warps in Operation Proposal, except instead of love on the line, he’s ranting and raving about grand-scale political conspiracies and spouting off in ancient lingo.
girlfriday: At least it’s a comical meta version? Still deadest horse ever though.
javabeans: And then the title is… wait for it… Queen In-hyun’s Man.
girlfriday: As in Not-the-Princess’s-Man? How many dramas is this going to rip off?
javabeans: This is just like the kind of parody drama you’d see IN a drama.
girlfriday: Totally! It’s like all those dramas in Myung-wol.
javabeans: I was just thinking Myung-wol. Like it’s the role Eric would take, and he’d be trying to save Myung-wol the actress.
girlfriday: Yes, yes, and he would get confused between reality and fiction… but wait, how does the time-traveling Joseon man end up an actor? Does he conveniently take a wormhole that spits him out in a casting office?
javabeans: I don’t think the hero’s actually an actor in the 21st century. It just says he meets the actress and comedy ensues and then they fall in love.
girlfriday: I hope he refuses to believe and/or understand that she’s not really a queen.
javabeans: “But… you just said you were the queen! [Gestures to film set] How can you be a queen there, but not over here? And how did YOU get your time-warp? And why do you look different?” But to mess with my head about the watchability of this drama, just as I’m about to write it off as Ripoff Pastiche of Hot Dramas Circa 2011, the director is the guy who did Vampire Prosecutor. So, awesome.
girlfriday: Huh. So it might be parody gold after all? Plus, yunno, time-traveling bidet jokes. Gotta love those.
javabeans: Plus, the writer did Unstoppable High Kick (cute and funny) and the lauded cable series Chosun Police (fusion sageuk investigation drama on cable that had three seasons). So… you might wanna clear your schedule after all when Queen In-hyun’s Man premieres in April. It’ll follow Twelve Men in a Year on tvN and run for 16 episodes.
girlfriday: Great. Just what I need, more dramas. *climbs back into wormhole*

I think all these time travelling hype started when the China side had a series of hits with time travelling theme. It got so popular that the central policy board started issuing a ban on time travelling in scripts! saying that it distort and has no respect for history. LOL

Okay, this post is several months old now but I still want to chip in: 2 chinese girls actually commited suicide in pursuit of time travelling, apparently influenced by popular c-dramas at the time, such as Bu Bu Jing Xin. I say it's a load of bull and it should have been up to the people close to the girls to assess where it all went wrong, whether they placed too much pressure on them. For the government to place a ban on the genre is just...
Now back to topic, I don't mind if we're beating a (deader than) dead horse here; I'm a total sucker for time travel! Especially when it's proven to be such a gem as this drama has. Just gimme~

I'm gonna be very clear here. I want a script in concrete, and i want this guy to laugh a lot on the scenes, and behind the set too. I want him to have a nice lady, who fights a bit for him (just to change). I want that drama to have 50% ratings, even if not deserved. That won't be a first. And i want him to flash some abs.
Thanks Dramagods for extracting that puppy n°2 from ATK's Hell.
And just to be even clearer: He's MINE! Arasso?

I have a lot of love to give. I'm a generous person.
I'm very flexible with my schedules.
I don't beg for handbags or couture dresses.
I'm funny.
I can cook dishes from all over the world.
I accept all modes of transportation for my dates.
I don't have a crazy bothering family.
So of course, i'm very popular with the boys. And since i never lie, they are very aware of the situation. I didn't receive any complaints for now.
But don't worry jomo, i still share The Sunshine with you. We just have to be extra careful around Bong Sun.

The Sunshine, Ivoire is Yoon Shi Yoon. He played the unforgettable character of Jae Hee in Me Too, Flower: Everytime he appears on my screen i can't help but to rejoice like if the sun had reappeared after the flood. I become a brainless sunflower, following each and every moves of his. Bong Sun is his love interest in the drama: A cop woman with unpredictable temper who doesn't hesitate to pull her gun when she's pissed off.
A true OTP those two. If you want to know how much gaga and crazy i can go for a drama, just read my comments on the recaps at DB: I wish i could erase a few ones...

Talk about writers screwing up a drama?!! The first 20 or so episodes were fantastic. Then the writers pulled a Hyde and the writing went into the pits!!! I was SO SO disappointed! I still have not finished it. I sure hope his new one is better! I love fantasy/time traveling shows!

i was going to watch A Thousand Kisses b/c i heard a lot of good reviews for it (this was, coincidentally during the 20-40 ep range) can you explain to me what happened that made you change your opinion? i was already wary of the 50+ ep, but now i don't want to commit myself if it isn't good.

March 11, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Stopped watching that at ep 26 so i had no idea it got as bad as people are saying. I am not surprised though because I remember in the Korean news there being some controversy over the central themes of the drama such as the remarrying of a divorcee/ sister and law around the time of episodes 20-30. With korea's habit of censoring on broadcast channels (as oppose to the freedom that cable shows have) I am not surprised in the least that they screwed up the plot to make it more MOGEF friendly.

If you really want to cry and rant and rave, watch A Thousand Kisses.. Such a great drama.. Yes, very much heart-rending. But justice and love triumph in the end. The ending was delightfully disappointing, if there is such a description. I couldn't get my eyes off that drama. Also my first time to follow the acting of Ji Hyun Woo. I watched his other dramas and movies because of A Thousand Kisses. Don't erase. Multiply.

I think the Dramaland has a stack of dramas for every genre and when one trend gets going, all others in that genre are let loose... like it's time!
At first it was music centered and now it's time traveling, about 4 dramas with similar concepts.. Please, Ji Hyun Woo, pick something fun this time, A thousand kisses was so hard to swallow!!

I have to admit, it sounds like it could be a hot mess, but if the director and writer are good, then maybe... but then, I still have this vestige of hatred for him because of that horrible weak-willed fiance-swapping bozo he played in ATK...so I just don't know. Believe me. ATK was an horrible accident. That guy plays the sweetest characters possible: My Sweet City, Invincible Lee Pyung Kang, the 12 first eps of ATK. He is just pure sweetness, and he can be terrific in physical comedy.
Plus the VP team, and on tvN? I don't need to look twice.
And it's about time we have a good parody about dramaland (someone must really read the comments here :)). They just need to insert a "perpetual weeper girl" on the script, so everyone can shout SHUT UP! at her in chorus.

What is it with Korean dramas and having the same kind of set-up being used in multiple dramas at the same time? Obviously you have to judge each drama individually on it's own merits, but when you take a step back and see all the other stuff that's going on the effect is quite odd.

It seems like the time travel bug has traveled from China to Korea. Sadly, time travel is one of those tropes that really give me a headache. I was okay with it when I was a kid watching Back to the Future, but now every time I see a time travel story, I go crazy with questions regarding the time travel paradox. And if there is a romantic storyline, I start wondering how each would adjust to what is practically a whole new world i.e. how would he get a social security number? what about tampons/sanitary napkins?

the sanitary napkins is more for what if his gal goes back to his time? It happened in a rom-com movie and when the lead female followed her man to the 1800s, all I could think was how relatively crappy things were back then for women without the convenience of sanitary napkins or tampons, women's rights, and epidurals for childbirth. And this is why i can't ever be a rom-com character - i'm just not adventurous enough to time-travel!

Don't all of you know?
All Kdrama writers will meet up once a year in a secluded area to discuss the next BIG thing in kdramaland. If they can't reach a decision, they'll each write a theme on strips of paper, put those papers in a box and ask the most senior writer to draw a paper out and BAM! They now have the inspiration to write new dramas. They should have taken it easy with the soju though, that's all I'm saying.
But hey, I'm not complaining. Yes to all the wacky time-travel fantasy dramas done right.

All I can picture at this point is mass confusion in the middle of Seoul - actors running around in sageuk-garb, production sets overlapping, location shots with confused extras and just general mayhem. Won't there be 2 or 3 of these time travel fantasies shooting around the same time?

I saw him once (I think it was last year) on "Happy Together" when he was promoting ATK and he was with other actors/actresses as well, of course. As some have said, he was so sweet (you just wanted to take him home and feed him. When I like an actor, I want to feed him and hang out and talk, ask a lot of questions. When I like an actress like Kim Sun Ah, I want to go shopping with her and hang out and eat at a nice restaurant and talk).
I was impressed by the fact that he didn't have any air and he was just himself, not trying to impress anyone or pretend to be someone or something he wasn't. He was just so sweet and so considerate. You should hear him talk about the relationship he has with his mom (swoon). OK, nuf said, I will stop, you guys know where I am going with this. I am going to stop before I get carried away (as that has been known to be happen). He did sound like a really sweet guy, and I am not usually easily swayed by celebrities. I observe them and I try to read between the lines, and I am usually accurate in what I see.

So let me get this straight...
"...hero is an upright Confucian scholar whose family falls victim to a conspiracy and is killed…and then he falls for an actress? And then he’s trying to rescue Queen Inhyeon..."
Wait, so is JHW part of Song Shi-yeol's family??? Not that I'm assuming, but from the little I know, he's the most involved I know of that was executed. And I know for a fact that he along with the Yeoheung Min's (Queen Inhyeon's family clan, to which Empress Myeongseong is a distinct descendant through one of her older brothers), fell victim to the Gisa Sahwa literati purge following the movement to make Jang Hee-bin's firstborn son as Crown Prince. And I learned all of that even before "Dong-yi"...
And I guess this "New Jang Hee-bin" (新장희빈) drama thing is kind of a nod towards the drama "新還珠格格" (the current remake of 1998 hit series "還珠格格"/"Princess Returning Pearl") ...since the recent drama with the name "Jang Hee-bin" is like last 2003 (with Kim Hye-soo, Jeon Gwang-ryeol, & Park Seon-yeong)
"Queen Inhyeon’s Man" (인현왕후의 남자 / 仁顯王后의 남자)??? Most likely they'd go reformat the whole thing to "The Queen's Man", like that drama last year, or they'd go caboodling around like they did in "The King 2 Hearts", pshhh~...!

I'm too confused to know if I wanna watch this.
So follower of Queen In-hyuk is helping her become more queenly then gets sucked into the future and meets fake In-hyuk and falls in love?
I hope that's it because if not, I dunno...

Might be a dead horse, but it sounds promising the way you gals (JB and GF) describe it. Now if they did it the way you said... :D
On quite another hand, it's Ji Hyun-woo, so I hope it's good :D

*sigh* Why? Why? Why? Don't add any more interesting dramas. I'm behind as it is. Does DST help at all in more drama watching hours? *sigh again* Nope, it doesn't help at all in anything. :(

He he he I thought my drama watching was getting more sophisticated. I watch dramas based on the pretty I could torture myself into finishing a badly written drama as long as I formed an affection with a (good looking) character. Lately I'm googling writers and directors and taking note of DB recommendations. I think this is a good barometer for which dramas to watch out for but then I would miss my self imposed torture fest.
I got excited watching an IU and Minho preview so started watching Salamander Guru, not a very good series in a critical point of view. Then found out our L aka Hyun Soo will make a cameo and I'm a goner.
See its wonderful to watch well written dramas Ojakgyo Brothers, SUFBB, Vampire Prosecutor etc. it affirms that sane writers do exist and not just a myth.
Dramas that go insane due to lack of coherent narrative, bad editing and screwy directing those could drive you up the wall and make you question your sanity, but those dramas also drive my brain to think. I could write a 300 page disertation on why DH2 was a fail. In the end watching bad dramas is not necessarily a waste of time its just a stepping stone to the more discerning drama watcher that you were meant to be.
Unfortunately I'm still in my Neanderthal phase, ohhh pretty flower boy must watch.
