Song Seung-heon becomes time-traveling Dr. Jin
by javabeans
Looks like Song Seung-heon is heading to cable with all the other big stars, with the upcoming — get this — fantasy-medical-fusion-sageuk, time-traveling, manga-adapted series titled Time Slip Dr. Jin. Phew, that’s a mouthful.
Time Slip Dr. Jin follows an accomplished doctor, Jin Hyuk, who travels back 150 years to the later Joseon era. He comes from a long line of doctors and is a genius himself, with the distinction of being the youngest ever to be admitted to medical school, the youngest to graduate at the top of his class, and the youngest neuroseurgeon. Ah, so Song Seung-heon’s getting his Brain after all.
Because of his own brilliance, however, Dr. Jin is unable to tolerate mistakes in others, and therefore possesses a cold, severe personality. So, not Dr. Funpants then. Basically he’s Doogie, but with the bedside manner of House.
But! Dr. Jin suffers from love’s wounds, and through a mysterious power, finds himself transported from 2012 to 1860. Once a doctor, always a doctor, and he begins treating people in that time period, but he’s hampered by the rudimentary medical advancements of that era, and has to fashion medical implements and make medicines himself. In the process, he becomes “a genuine doctor.” In other words, he grows a heart to match that brain.
The premise is an adaptation of a Japanese manga that was turned into a drama in 2009 titled JIN. The Japanese version appears to have won a number of accolades, which never hurts. But I’m expecting the Korean version to tweak enough things to make the drama its own thing, and it sure has enough influences to draw upon from K-dramaland already: It’s like Faith meets Brain meets Operation Proposal meets Jejoongwon.
By some accounts, Time Slip Dr. Jin will air on new general-programming cable station Channel A (home of Color of Woman and Bachelor’s Vegetable Store). However, a few stories are treading more cautiously, saying that the production is still considering going with a broadcast station.

The dorama version was excellent and had a strong leading actor in Osawa Takao and a scene stealing supporting character Sakamoto Ryoma (Uchino Masaki) and the gorgeus Nakatani Miki as a courtesan.
It deserved all the awards it got.
I'm not sure how this adaptation will be because even SSH is a looker acting wise he leaves a lot to be desired.

Exactly. JIN was interesting because the story was interwoven with Japan's history at that time, Sakamoto Ryoma played a big role in the series. Plus, penicillin has a place in Japan's medicine history.
I wonder how they'll play that out in this one.
Plus, Osawa was great. His return to the small screen in 2009 was on par with Han Suk-Gyu's return last year. Choosing SSH makes me scratch my head.

Exactly times two... JIN/JIN 2 was the only recent dorama that I suffered watching live through a crappy KeyholeTV connection because I couldn't wait for the RAWs to be put up -- it had that much of a pull on me. Osawa-san... sigh.
But I doubt it will end up on one of the Big Three's schedules -- have you looked at the drama listings coming up for the next four-five months? I'd better invest in some No-Doz first... :)

JIN deserved all of the accolades it won, but I agree with the other posters that it requires a VERY good actor in the lead, because the lead really carries the weight of the storytelling conflict here.
I am not sure how the Korean version will play out, but I recommend the dorama unreservedly; my husband is incredibly picky about dramas, and JIN is one of the few he likes.

Not to mention the political atmosphere -- the Boshin wars, the rebellion, all that jazz -- really adds significant layers and complexities to the original story. Jin isn't simply a doctor somewhere; he's a doctor practicing clearly western medicine at a time when western medicine was still regarded very suspiciously *and* the ruling powers were still trying to come to grips with the implications of the black ships. Expel the barbarians, and all that -- which creates a backdrop to Jin, and an additional weight/ramification to his actions, that I don't see a parallel to in Korean history.
But who knows, maybe the Kdrama version will make something out of it... but they've got a long row to hoe to convince me that anyone could do Jin better than Osawa.

See everyone. Now i'm sure there is an unofficial contest among writers to see who can put together the largest number of premises in one single drama. Just choose one and treat it correctly and in depth writers-nim, that's enough for us you know...
I'm waiting equally for this one and for Faith, just to see which one is the winner...
More seriously, i didn't see JIN, but it makes me want to try it.

Well, you see, since Dr. McFly MacGyver Quinn Medicine Man Towel is from the future, and where he works does not have indoor plumbing, he will show them how to set up a rudimentary shower with the implements at hand.
The problem, of course is he will have to demonstrate this implement for the, um, nursing staff.
(I hearby appoint all the Ladies of The Hand Towel as Nursing Staff.)
But the Nursing Staff just doesn't get it, so he has to demonstrate over and over and over.

His name sounds similar to the Korean term for handkerchief, which is composed of the Korean words for hand ("son") and towel ("soo-gun").
I suppose a handkerchief is a type of hand towel.

For the storyline, it's interesting because JIN in jdrama appeared when it's time when people are not familiar with western medical and when he time slipped, people doubted about his skill. It's also interesting when he befriend someone who is an important figure in Japanese history. I wonder how Korea remake will going to change about the history part

Rooftops are convenient to see loan sharks approaching. And you can still shout out for help to your neighbor if you forgot to buy ramyeon at the convenience store.
The only thing problematic must be the cold in winter and the heat in the summer. Just have to find a willing buddy to share body heat. And refreshing can be done with a shower on the open ( breeze, body oil, halo of light not included ).
YY
February 20, 2012 at 8:10 PM
Rooftops are great for a tight budget, especially if you want the shower/halo of light. Hot dude can shower for free in the rain - who cares if the creepy ahjumma in the opposite block is watching! And there's so much space to lather and roll around or do lathery push-ups unlike a bathroom. You don't have to fix any special lighting, cos you'll have natural sunlight falling right on you. And if you're a spunky annoying heroine, you can get drunk and lean on hot chaebol's shoulder, and if you're lucky, one fine day, chaebol's evil mum will slap you right up there and call you a slut, but don't you worry, just sit tight and cryyyyyy for maybe 3-4 hours at most, and hot chaebol will come and grab you and pull you in for a hot chaebolly kiss. Just clamp your lips shut; that is a sure-fire guarrantee to get him to declare "I LOVE YOU, you stubborn, kind, hardworking newspaper deliverer/milk deliverer/egg seller/petrol pump cum car wash attendant!" And if you play your cards right and transform into a block of wood, next thing he'll say to you: "Marry me!"

I really loved the Japanese drama but found the ending unsatisfying. It was so far from a happily ever after and more like a doing useful work forever after, especially for the heroine.
So I hope the Korean version highlight the romance aspect that was so muted in the Japanese.
I imagine they will since they have already put the "Korean" spin on it by heightening his Jin's credentials, with the usual superlatives "genius" "cold" etc.

you have summarized what I'm afraid of - the original (manga and drama) was focused on "deeper" issues like personal sacrifice (for the common good/the greater cause) and linking "our" time with _that_ era in Japanese history made the message that much more poignant. They were also true enough to "real" history for my bf (sb who has dedicated his academic career to researching Japanese medical history, esp. of that era) to fanboy over. The announcement (combined with what I know of K-drama) makes me fear for a Sungkyunkwan-Scandalized version and while me the little girly (the one that loved SKKS, my IT, so to speak) is getting all excited for fluffy time-travel romance, me the adult goes *facepalm* in "fear" of things to come...
I am glad, though, they apparently rid themselves of the whole "brain child/pseudo sci-fi"! As a fan of serious sci-fi that's the one thing that made me cringe when reading the manga.
Here's hoping that they'll somehow be able to salvage the original's meaning and spirit and don't get too hung up on the "form" (or romance) ... There have been a number of very good period dramas in Korea, after all.

I have to agree too. The ending was bittersweet, but satisfying. I cried a lot (but partly because Jin was over).
I am actually excited to hear there will be a Korean version because I love historical Korean dramas and usually it seems there is more budget since the dramas are marketed internationally. So I'm definitely expecting better costumes, special effects, soundtrack - a "powered up" version. Regarding the SSH, I think he's acting is improving. Hopefully they will choose a strong female lead and supporting cast. I'll be disappointed if they chose some newbie idol actress...

The problem wih dorama/jdrama is exactly that. In the romance department. The kdrama surpasses jdrama and tdrama when it comes to romance.
There are only few jdrama that are really satisfactory when we talk about conveying great love and affection feel by it leads to their viewers.
I'm hoping that Kdrama version will stick to what they are best at.

February 20, 2012 at 8:39 PM
I don't think it's a problem at all. Jdramas don't treat romance as be-all and end-all in their dramas unless the drama genre is romance. Kdramas are pretty much romance, romance and more romance even when it's not necessary to interject the romance bit.

JIN, for me is a truly one of a kind drama, with excellent acting and powerful script. Song Seung Hoon might be an A-List actor, but that's just it. So far I haven't yet impressed with his talent, since Takao Osawa was really great portraying Jin Minakata character. I honestly doubt SSH can at least up to par with Osawa in acting battle. I wonder who's gonna be the leading lady, especially the one who will play the courtesan, again Nakatani Miki's strong acting left a very impressive mark. And The drama itself won so many prestigious awards (both seasons). Just please don't let me down on this one.
So many drama remakes, it makes me think is Korea really running out of fresh ideas????

this is the one remake that shouldn't be compared to the original one. Jin was interwoven with Japanese history. perhaps, SSH can actually pull this off within the Joseon context. I'm very excited for this drama because it's only the premise that's taken from the Jdrama. but the context will be - should be - completely different. therefore, i'm pretty much anticipating it knowing i won't be comparing it a lot.
plus... Jaejoong from JYJ is supposedly confirmed for a secondary character.

If it should be completely different with the original one, then they shouldn't make a remake of JIN. I honestly feel kind of disappointed with all the Korean remakes from J dramas, well not all, but mostly.

JIN was superb. It is the kind which Korean remake can't do better! Japan has extreme manga and short story database that livedramas can benefit from. I think Koreans don't at least they don't bother to utilize such sources. So they do remakes of Jdramas and everytime I anticipate them ending with a big disappointment (except The Man Who Can't Get Married). They always impose Kdrama patterns on those remakes. At the end if you watched 50 Kdramas, you have watched it all!!!
Rather than this go and watch original JIN season 1 and 2!

let's not jump into conclusion in this one. because... the premise might be the same, but i'm sure this one will be completely "koreanized". Joseon was different from the Edo era. so... i think with good writing and directing -and hopefully, hopefully good acting from SSH and improved acting from Jaejoong- i think this remake has a chance to stand on its own.

Another thought: In Japanese his name is Jin 仁, which (according to my Korean dictionary, the online Hanja Dic, and Rouzer) is read "in" - so what's with the "jin"? o_O Also, Minakata (Jin's originaly surname) is a different reading for "Nanpô" (Southern) which in that era was the common term for "European" (or nowadays "Western"). Since Jin is practicing Western medicine (as opposed to Kanpô - Chinese) naming him Minakata wasn't just an "accident". So, what does/could "Hyuk" mean in this context?

The purpose of this thread, sadly, is to IMAGINE the Hand Towel in this role, and to discuss all the possiblities, wardrobe, tilt-wise and showerwise.
What almost always happens without exception, he doesn't get or doesn't accept the role.
That may seem like a bad thing, but actually, it isn't. As long as he is NOT cast, we keep gettng casting rumours. And as long as we get casting rumours, our imaginations can RUN WILD!
SSH is a beautiful beautiful man. Just thinking about him makes my heart a-flutter.

I'm not much for commercials either but I do enjoy the Lotte commercials. Particularly the one where they have all my pretty boys (SSW, Ji Sung, Rain, Big Bang, someone else I don't know) singing 'So I'm Loving You'

Jdramas and kdramas both hold their own unique charm. I enjoy them both. So after reading this article I've started watching JIN. Thankfully Jdramas only have 10-12 episodes and they are shorter, so it is easier to go through them. I am looking forward to the Korean version to compare. I know that with "Boys Before Flowers" I enjoyed the Japanese version better, while "You're Beautiful" I liked the Korean. If it wasn't for my daughter I would have disconnected cable a long time ago...

LOL. So true. They are gonna have to do a lot of tweaking to make it Korean history based. I was thinking the same thing about Sakamoto Ryoma. Not only was he Jin's friend, he was one of the most important story arcs in the drama and his interactions with Jin and what ultimately happened to him was probably the climax of the drama. I just don't think the drama would work without someone like Ryoma. Besides that, Ryoma was based on a real life person and several of the events were basically what happened in the past. It would be plain stupid if the k-version just had the same character.

Aside from Jin's superbly written story, the acting was top notch. Being a huge Jin fan, I'm a bit dissapointed with SSH being the lead.
Minakata Jin was a man who not only had to face living in a different era, he had to struggle with his inner self. Whether it was ok to save someone, to interfere with history, to befriend someone involved in politics, to love someone... these were all struggles he had to deal with. Can SSH portray all those fears and complexities?

Great summary of Jin's character...I too am a fan of the original Jin drama and regard it as one of my all-time J-drama favorites. I even think it is a J-drama classic, so part of me don't want a remake of this J-drama gem.
I don't know if SSH can portray Jin's character. I do know (and many have also said before me), SSH is no Osawa Takao.
How about Jo Seung-woo? I read he's currently doing the musical Dr. Zhivago. But maybe he'll finish that musical just in time to do Jin. His filmography and theater experience seem to suggest he has a broader acting range and better suited to play Jin. I vote for Jo Seung-woo.

There is an entire site dedicated to those concert pictures.
Reminds me of the song title "Do You See What I See?"

Hmmm...to put it delicately...otteke?
One of the issues K-pop males have is they are passionate about what they are doing. On stage, this can translates to increased heart rate, their hearts become filled with emotion and sometimes we can see their excitement in their costumes.

That would be cool but Jin is not at all a re-make of Dr. Who.
omg...could you IMAGINE a Korean Time Lord? We would get sageuk manes of glory, sword fights on horseback, skin tight jeans and guitar playing, AND shower scenes.
And a love that spans eternity.
Sigh. Rose and the Doctor, forever.

Jin actually started life as a manga.

But knowing the habit of the K-lovers, they wouldn't give a damn about the source.

I haven't read the manga or watched the jdrama but the lead character description is fascinating. I can't imagine SSH in that role sadly but maybe he will be brilliant, who knows? We just have to wait and see. And it's a smart move to cast Jaejoong who has a freaking gazillion of fans in Japan. Even if it's a poor drama in comparison to the jdrama it's going to be huge in Japan.

Ok, so now we have two guys who can't act? Jaejoong really? Reports say his role will be that of a competitive military official with an abundance of self-esteem. Jaejoong will be Dr. Jin's rival. Can't really see Jaejoong as a strong military leader.

While I wouldn't put Jaejoong up there with the likes of the top notch actors in k-ent, he can definitely act. Personally I think he did quite well in Protect the Boss and I am usually the type to be very critical of idol actors since I am getting really tired of bad idol actors taking up roles and worsening the quality of the drama. I am actually looking forward to him here because the role seems very different to his Muwon character and I tend to prefer actors try to expand the roles they play. As for the abundance of self esteem, Jaejoong for as nice as he is in real life definitely knows he is good looking so I don't see the arrogance portrayal being a problem. As for the competitive military official, while he can definitely bulk up for the part, it will be interesting to see him attempt at the whole serious military guy persona considering he is a bit of a space cadet in real life.

If everyone in the world tells you you're beautiful...it's arrogance to insist otherwise.
I look at it like this: God gave some of us beauty, some of us brains, some of us a voice, etc etc etc. For those so gifted, they didn't do anything to 'earn' it - they just have it. It's only right to acknowledge it and be thankful for it, use it as it was intended to be used, and then move on. It's not arrogance to accept the truth; it's only arrogance when you think it makes you a better human because you happened to get lucky.

It drives everyone crazy when a beautiful person points out his/her flaws to show how human he/she is.
But what happens is a huge refrain of "How can you say that? You ARE beautful, flawless, gorgeous, etc"
Just accept the compliment, and thank the creator for your fortune. (We don't need to know your plastic surgeon's input)

Someone said to me once that one of the things they liked best was that I laugh as hard at my jokes and one liners as anyone else. 'of course I do,' I said. 'I'm just as surprised to hear what I say as you are!'

Jin/2 jdrama was alright. I watched it once and I doubt I would watch it again. It wasn't as good as the manga. I liked the chemistry between Osawa Takao and Ayase Haruka though. They should really pick a good actor for the Korean version, not this guy.
