Medical drama Syndrome is no Brain

…though you couldn’t tell from its promo material. Syndrome‘s newly released posters and trailer are pretty standard stuff, which I could swear I’ve seen tons of times before. Seriously, is there a medical drama template setting in Photoshop, where you insert actors’ faces and out it spews a generic-looking promo shot with the requisite scrubs, scalpel, and body part of interest?

True, medical dramas are always going to be popular and a great number of them are quite different from each other (see: House versus Grey’s, or New Heart vs OBGYN vs White Tower), so I don’t dismiss Syndrome for being yet another entry in the field. Occupation dramas are just a reason to change the scenery for universal stories of love/ambition/rivalry anyway.

Even still, I just can’t get my interest up for this show, because, well, we just saw Brain, right? The show ended not long ago, aired on Mondays and Tuesdays, and was about neurosurgeons. Syndrome, like Brain, revolves around a motley collection of familiar personalities, from your young female resident to the perfectionist colleague to the cold-hearted surgeon. You may as well call this Brain No. 2 (no relation to HeadsNo2). Or Brain Again. Re-Brained? No-Brainer?

I mean, is there anything about that trailer that’s fresh or interesting? You have pounding music to underscore the life-and-death stakes, fierce looks of dedicated professionals, and a “your life is literally in my hands” motif. I wish they’d chosen to tell us more about the characters or the story, since the concept — Doctors save lives!…or do they? — is about as familiar as they get.

The drama does feature solid actors in its lineup, led by Han Hye-jin (Jejoongwon), Song Chang-eui (Life Is Beautiful), and Park Gun-hyung (Kingdom of the Wind), pictured in the above poster. The second poster includes supporting cast members Jo Jae-hyun (New Heart) and Kim Sung-ryung (Stormy Lovers).

JTBC has done a pretty good job with its inaugural dramas (Padam, Fermentation Family), which have pulled in modest-to-good ratings (Padam in the 1.5% range, Fermentation just under 1%) and have earned some praise for their cinematic quality. I suppose that means there’s a good chance Syndrome will boast equally solid production values, so there’s that.

Syndrome will air after Padam Padam wraps up its run and premieres on February 13.

The only fresh thing about this preview was Jo Jae-hyun, I can't believe he's in another medical drama. New Heart was SO good,almost a masterpiece, but the medical dramas these days (Brain,Syndrome) don't attract me as much as New Heart.

i love New Heart, but it's Ji Sun who really carried that drama, imho.

i hope they put out a Scrubs-esque medical drama. (Surgeon Bong Dalhee...? idk, i didnt watch). production quality of a medical drama but less of the dark, mellow tone. altho OBGYN has a lighter tone than the other popular Kmedicals.

New Heart and Iryu are still my MAIN medical dramas.

haven't seen brain but from the promos, its another nuerosurgeon/brain medical drama again. since it looked like brain was a success, i guess they're going with a "since it aint broke, don't fix it" try. i wish they up the ante by doing a medical drama about doing surgery on children/pediatric surgery. children's organs are much smaller compared to an adult, so the stakes can be said is much higher, and will definitely bring in the drama and tears, etc. check out the manga "Saijou no Meii;" it even has villainess doctors.

I watched Brain and loved it though. But, I think that's because Shin Ha Kyun (who is awesome in every aspect of the word) was in it. Not to mention the hero (I use this term loosely) in Brain was pretty much a cold-hearted, ruthless, antagonist type person which was oh so fun to watch. He had his soft center, yeah, but he was kinda bad in that cray way, man.

I'm not really familiar with anyone here and the plot (or lack of?) doesn't sound like anything I'm gonna go check out anytime soon. But, yay for doctors saving lives!

I absolutely agree. I love Shin Ha Kyun and watching him act in Brain was like watching a train about to fall off a cliff. He was just about crazy enough to go insane, but empirical enough to stay within reason. That tension between insanity and loveableness made the show for me. Man. I wish I could marry him <33

They need to take a lesson from Nip/Tuck promos. They were always awesome. I never saw a dull one or one that was similar to another.

Oh you know what they should do is have a contest where people send in fake promos for a med drama and pick one that meets whatever criteria they have. That's a way to get rid of dull and overused motifs.

Other than that I don't think I will tune in for this. I'm picky as hell when it comes to med dramas. So I might just read a review and see whats up.

I stuck with it because I was riveted by Shin Ha Kyun's tour-de-force performance, however, I thought the writing left a lot to be desired.

No one can beat the awesomeness that was Brain or Hot Tension so this preview they are showing should be better.I definitely will watch it for Han Hye Jin but it looks horrible.Now let me go rewatch Brain iso everyday this drama is on I can compare. All I ask is that please no one make Han Hye Jin look stupid or have weak main characters.I am so tired of seeing her play in 2nd rate roles or have no one to act off so essentially it ruins a triumph comeback for her. Sigh now let me keep laughing at the funny but hilarious comments on this thread.

Hey look, it's Brain!
Shin Ha-kyun -> Song Chang-eui
Jung Jin-young -> Jo Jae-hyun
Choi Jung-won -> Han Hye-jin
Jo Dong-hyuk -> Park Gun-hyung

It really doesn't help that Syndrome's title looks nearly identical to Brain's title. Similar fonts, English spelling underneath, one letter (the "ㅣ" in 린 & 신 for Brain and Syndrome respectively) as a picture... yeah, besides the acting from Shin Ha-kyun, Brain was mediocre at best so I hope only the promos look identical otherwise Syndrome is going to be boring and utterly stupid.

Maybe if they make this a vampire medical drama, more people would watch. A beautiful doctor gets bitten by a vampire on her way home from work one night. Subsequently she has to fight the temptation to bite her patients, and is forced to guzzle bags of blood from the blood bank when no one's looking. A patient dies after the blood bank runs out of blood (because of her). Should she confess and be staked? Or should she switch to an alternative blood source, specifically, rats living in the hospital pantry, instead?

I just finished watching Brain (and re-watched its ending for the second time on KBS World tonight).

It TOTALLY blew me away and I havn't had that high octane urge of addiction to a drama for a long long time. Shin Ha-Kyun is the draw - I hope you can grace our dramaland more often. That intensity just keeps you glued to the screen. Bouncing him is the amazing Jung Jin Young and you got a fantastic double wammy you could only dream of.

I am not sure if this new drama could follow the hard act in Brain.

@epyc, I am like you as Brain totally blew me away! I was never into medical drama until I was memerised by the riveting acting of Shin Ha Kyun one fine Sat afternoon when I spotted his expressive eyes behind a surgical mask in an episode of Brain on KBS World. I then realised that he is the guy who beat Park Si Hoo of the more popular drama TPM, to the Daesang award!I even followed the remaining series thru live streaming. It is so underrated online BUT is a hit in Korea and Shin Ha Kyun has garnered a huge following because of it.

Why can't they have an ajumma doctor and a younger male intern instead of the typical? I can see him, all gooey eyed as he stares at her over his mask while she performs a complicated surgery. Then, when a patient dies, she's all stoic, but he finds her out in the staircase, weeping copious amounts of tears, and hot young intern comes in and comforts her. She's sure she can't be married; her life is too busy and men are too intimidated by her brains and career. He's bored with girls his age, and is starving for a woman with substance and a strong grip on life. Set in the backdrop of an urban ER, where there can be numerous cases, with maybe one main case running throughout. Has this ever been done? I'm fairly new to the drama world, but haven't seen anything like this. If there has, let me know; I'll definitely be there to watch.

You should try Ob / Gyn ( i know Viki and Mysoju have it ).
The romance(s) are touching and the medical cases ( a lot of babies if that could decide you ) interesting ( a bit bloody and very heartwrenching ). There are some fun moments too, so at the end it's a realistic and well balanced drama.

I will definitely try it for the cast, but I freaking loved Brain and Shin Ha Kyung was such a joy to watch that it would be tough to top that. However, Brain really relied a lot on Shin Ha Kyung and his delivery so maybe this drama wouldn't be so focused on one character. It worked for Brain because Shin ha Kyung had great delivery and had a very entertaining character. Kind of like how House works. The show is all about Hugh Laurie and he absolutely has to deliver for it. In comparison to Greys Anatomy which focuses on different characters.

Just finished "Brain" this weekend and boy was it GREAT!! I literally stayed up for an entire day for the drama. Shin Ha Kyun's acting was phenomenal! He stole the show! Or more like, he was the show! There isn't a heavy emphasis on the whole love story, but that shouldn't deter anyone from watching the drama. I've been out of the whole kdrama world for so long (about 4 years) and Shin Ha Kyun's acting pulled me back in. However, I've been attempting to watch some kdramas and nothing has been able to lure me in "Brain" did.
