MBC rom-com courts Kim Sun-ah as its leading lady

I Do, I Do is the name of a new drama series heading to MBC, and the front-runner to play the lead is reportedly Kim Sun-ah. As so often is the case, there have not been any final decisions made yet, though her reps have confirmed that she’s looking at the drama, among others.
On their own, each of the elements of the plot sounds pretty old hat — single careerwoman in her thirties, younger man, workplace romance — but when you put them all together for this particular premise, you’ve got my interest. Kim Sun-ah plays a “gold miss” (as in, single and proud of it, a defiant twist on the “old miss” designation) who’s at the height of her career as the top shoe designer in her company. She has a one-night “mistake” with a rookie employee and gets knocked up. Given that the title is “I Do,” I presume a slightly awkward wedding ensues, quite probably of the shotgun variety. And somewhere in the midst of all of this, the two find love.
It sounds similar to the setup of 2008’s low-key romance I Love You (starring Ahn Jae-wook and Seo Ji-hye, who marry after a one-night stand gets her pregnant), except with the age gap reversed between the leads. Which can be a significant difference, considering that she’s top dog and he’s a brand-new hire. The description doesn’t explicitly indicate that the love interest is younger, but it seems the likely setup; in fact I hope he ends up being a lot younger, because I see room for a lot of narrative potential in that. Reports hint at a “top star” considering the role.
Kim’s last drama, Scent of a Woman, frequently dipped into weepy melodrama territory — inevitable, since she was playing a terminally ill cancer patient — but Kim’s shown she’s got solid comic chops in previous roles. It’ll be nice seeing her back in the comedy game (I love her being funny and sly, as long as she steers clear of the cutesy-wootsy baby-talking) after doing a string of more dramatic fare.
I Do I Do won a prize in 2010 for the New Story Creation Project held by the Korea Creative Content Agency, which develops content and ideas for various fields, including broadcasting. I know little about that organization or its projects, but I suppose the fact that the story won an award in something gives it a little boost of confidence.
The show is currently in development at Kim Jong-hak Productions, and looks to air in May.

I have to agree. I think he's too young for this role. Plus I love Jung Yong Hwa as the charismatic band vocalist. He hasn't convinced me yet as an actor.
But if he gets this role, this is the second time he'd be playing it. In the beginning, his character in You've Fallen For Me, Lee Shin, was head-over-heels for his teacher.

I agree. I could see Joo Ji Hoon better for the role than Jung Yong Hwa. Not that I don't like him...Ji Hoon just seems more fitting or a better complement to Kim Sun-ah.

OMG! That was my first thought too.... Please dont let it be Jung Yong Hwa. I also immediately thought of Lee Min Ho! Can you imagine the explosion of chemistry? however, I really want to see LMH in that medical fusion sageuk. Lee Min Ho with a mane of glory? Rowrr. Although Jung Il Woo would be breathKtakingly goood in both roles. And both actors would portray them completely differrently too... What To do? I would also lovee to see Jae Hee in this with Kim Sun Ah. Damn that would be good.

I love me some Bummie and his acting has progressed by leaps and bounds (we all saw how terrific he was as AngelBoy in Padam) but paired up with Kim Sun Ah? I don't think so - for me, she's way too strong, personality and acting-wise. I can't see it as a successful chemistry between the two of them.
I think she needs a somewhat acerbic actor to bounce off of, and KB is just way too sweet.
I'd like to offer up a left-field choice.
Jaejoong. Wait! Before you run away screaming, think about this for a sec..
PtB showed that boy can act, he can be funny and has good timing for reactions. Of course, it would be a case of the hot, younger bridegroom being prettier than the bride, but Sun Ah must be used to it by now considering her leading men are invariably better looking. Plus, the age difference wouldn't be as pronounced between Jaejoong and Sun Ah, unlike using Yonghwa who skews way younger than KSA and he just doesn't have the acting experience yet to handle an actress of her caliber.

Haha, I'm thinking, "Anyone but Yong-hwa!" Because no matter how much chemistry they might have (I'm gonna eat my words in May, just watch...) I'll forever see that age gap. It's like they're brother and sisters! Doesn't help that Yong-hwa doesn't even look old for his age. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Wow - this post is galloping away with potential acting mates for KSA!
After reading through the following 88 comments, a fair number have mentioned Lee Min Ho for this project.
If this drama had occurred about a year and a half ago, I'd be on the bandwagon for the pairing. But now, no.
LMH's turn in City Hunter has projected him into that acting stratosphere where it's not possible to see him anymore as being in a secondary or subservient position (intentioned or not) in an drama. I think his projected screen image is just way too strong now, and I think that he's one of the few actors who could 'steal' the focus from KSA. I mean, if it was Won Bin and KSA in a drama, who would you focus on? And yes, I can see LMH on a WB level. This boy was made for the movies.

Yoon Kye Sang! I loved his acting in Who Are You - it proves he can do young, and do old, and do comedy. And it is past, long past time for him to get the girl. If it were KSA, it would definitely be worth the wait.

totally agree with u and so is Kim Bum and Lee Minho all of them are way too young for her.. I would prefer Eric Mun, Jae Hee or Jung Gyu Woon they're younger than her but still within the reasonable age difference at least looks wise... but as for Kim Bum, Lee Minho I think (and don't get me wrong I love Kim Sun Ah) they will look like her younger brothers :S

I agree with you... Well Lee Minho would be alright (I haven't seen any of his shows so I'm talking only age-look wise) but Kim Bum, jaejoong and ESPECIALLY Jung Yong Hwa all look too young I can't imagine the chemistry between them... she'd look more like their young aunt than a lover!! I do really like her though problem is she's got so much energy that sometimes its hard to match a lead up to her standards :P we'll can't wait to see how this turns out although the setting isn't too much my type but I'll check it ;)

If it was Kim Hyun Joong: "the sharp tongued guy on reality show We Got Married," I'd say bring it on! But I agree with you if we're talking about Kim Hyun Joong: "the actor." Yeah... that guy could disappear from the face of k-dramaland.
I'm going off-topic here, but: I've always wondered why KHJ never considers more humorous, witty roles - one that's comparable to his off-screen persona. I understand some actors find the need to challenge themselves, purposely selecting roles that are out of their comfort zone. However, in the case of KHJ, it's evidently not working out for him so why not try out roles that are more familiar to him? - get accustomed to acting THEN go on from there.
Noowww, back to the topic: I'd like to see Lee Min Ho or Jung Il Woo.

Yong Hwa as he played in Heartstrings. The nicknames came from a group effort to accurately describe his talents.
Also known as the Man of Still because his facial expressions never changed. There were some other descriptions having to do with Stone face, etc.

Jung yong hwa is so busy with the comeback of CNBLUE this coming March so you're assured that you will not see him as the leading man in I do and FNC denied it already. Maybe he should concentrate of being musician because he's really one of the best especially with his talent in composing, singing and playing instruments.

I thought about Song Joong Ki too, but I think he's still a tad too young. If it is KSA, she'll need someone like a chameleon - young and boyish one minute, but capable of turning on a dime and pulling out the mature manly. I think Song Joong Ki can do it, but it will be quite the stretch for him to be manly enough for KSA.

if that's the case, KSA is going to eat him alive onscreen..also he's not really a "Top star"...only ppl that fits this bill and is much younger (and that I can think of) are Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong, Lee Seung Ki, Jan Geun Suk...and since the latter two are occupied and KHJ and LMH are supposed to be considering Speed and Faith respectively...idk

Dam why can't it be Hyun Bin!!! I don't care if he played her man before, with the chemistry they had it could be done. Korean drama are about remaking something a hundred time over and re using 50% of the same cast. So here a idea, change the supporting case, take the storyline to the next level have it be more original or should I said mature and then throw in Hyun Bin and Kim Sun-Ah , I would differently watch it just because they feed off each other so wonderfully.

I really hope the male lead rumour is wrong - I thought he was just a blank in You're Beautiful (and couldn't abide Heartstrings). Like or loathe City Hall, the one thing I think it made clear was that Kim Sun-Ah works brilliantly with a strong co-lead to spark off.

Too true! And it is also true about City Hall - people seem to either love, or loathe it, and not much in between! But then, it makes sense when you have two main actors that can provoke very strong reactions in their audiences. And that's what she needs here - not a pretty face you can take or leave, but a strong, dynamic personality.

She was just fantabulous in City Hall. And i'm all in for The Noona Love Extreme couple. That said, if she's confirmed for the role, her leading man better be a strong actor with unquestionable comic sense.
Could the producers consider my personal highly objective advice ? Depending on how far they are ready to go about the age of the daddy :
-Yoon Shi Yoon. Just don't keep the haircut of M2F, and don't call him ahjussi.
-Lee Jang Woo. The second poor lead in Man of Honor.
-Lee Min Ki. Suddenly hot ondrama market, and who could be a convincing crush. Just keep the guyliner and add a gothic wardrobe.
-Kim Young Kwang. The rival of Wook-sshi in Veggie Store. He is so tall he can eat his soup on KSH's head. That's enough for me.
While i am at it, can they change the work environment ? I mean SHOES, again. Boring. Why not clothes for kids or pregnant women. That could give us some funny relooking sessions.

OMG! There were those perfect, fabulous tango scenes...perfectly ruined by her stiffness. And WHERE was there any chemistry between her and the leading actor? I hardly had ever seen such a stiff and bland acting! But, again, that's perfect for a career spinster.

Kim Sun-ah IS chemistry. She's sizzling, engaging and fearless.
I think the second lead in FB Ramyun Shop would be good, or Lee Min Ho or Yoo Ah In also.
My absolute favourite pairings - maybe for a future drama or film - would be KSA with Lee Jung Jin or Ha Ji-won.

I like the idea of Lee Min Ho. I think the chemistry between the two would be good and he's not so young (looking and chronologically) that it would make the story implausible. Kim Bum looks too young, as does Jung Yong Hwa. Whoever it is, they'll need to have the same cinema charisma that Kim Sunah has or they'll get eaten up..

Noh Min-woo was in Rock Rock Rock and he did an awesome job there. The only reason I mentioned him and Kim Jaewook is because I have no idea who would be a good candidate for this role. Seriously I can't picture anyone in this role. The only one belatedly coming to mind is Ha Suk Jin. Too bad Kang Dong Won is still in the military. He'd be my ultimate choice. Although none of these guys mentioned have much of an age gap with Kim Sunah.

Sun Ah is for me the wooden lady. I saw her but in "Scent of a Woman", however, that's exactly why I have never tried to watch another work of hers. There were a few dramas in which I could perceive such a lack of chemistry. Maybe in "The Musical", which for me is synonymous with an impressive failure.

KSA - YAY!!!! I love her comic timing, her mobile, expressive face, her fearlessness when it comes to being ugly or awkward or clumsy - but I am totally with JB, I wish she would drop the cutesy, baby-talk FOREVER.
That being said, she is such a powerful actress, and a dynamic personality, that she needs a co-star who can match her; frankly, only Cha Seung Won, Hyun Bin, and to some extent Gong Yoo have been good matches in terms of acting chops and charisma (sorry LDW fans, I thought he had to work his but off in Scent of a Woman to keep up with her).
I can see Jae Joong, I can see Top, but I think Lee Min Ho and Jung Il Woo (even though I like both of them) are too metrosexual, and in Jung Il Woo's case a little too delicate-looking (someone give that boy a sandwich!). And Jung Yong Hwa? I foresee disaster, as his wooden little-boy lost demeanor would throw a wet blanket over every spark she would set off. Young, old, doesn't matter, but the part has to be played by a man, not a boy.

I'm with you on the baby-talk thing. She needs to drop it NOW. It might be cute on a girl of 15 but when you're over 30 it just makes me cringe. I enjoyed Scent of a Woman right up until she started busting this out and then I just dropped that emotional link with the character because it was so grating.

I love Sun Ah and i can't wait for May. I think majority here agrees that we prefer Jung Yong Hwa, not to be the main lead. Personally, if the male lead actor have to be a younger dude, then i prefer TOP or Lee Min Ho because of their acting abilities and extra points for them looking hot.

Yesss!! Another drama with the Queen of rom-com!! XD I loved her in every drama & movie she's done up till date and can honestly say she is my favourite Korean actress.
Kim Sun Ah has such good chemistry with all her co-stars too!! Like many of you have said, I think she'd do well in this new drama with someone like Kim Bum or Lee Min Ho or Jae Joong--even Park Shi Woo would work, I think. But Jung Yong-hwa? Ummm, personally, I don't really like his acting, and yeah, he is a little too young....even his face is a little baby-faced.
But I think I heard that Jung Yong-hwa rejected this drama...not 100% sure, but I think I read that somewhere...If so, then I hope one of the three other people I mentioned selects the role!! <3

How about Choi Daniel? I saw him in Baby Face Beauty (but I can't stand in Musical, that drama is so suck), Im pretty sure that he can play as a lead actor in rom-com. But I'm with you girls bout JYH. Not because he's too young for KSA, but his acting is too bad, maybe he should focus on his career as a singer, not actor.

Oooh Daniel Choi - he could do it! I remember how dorky and boyish he was in Baby-Faced, but he's shown his hot side when he was in the Musical. Not in the scene with Gu Hye Sun (don't get me started on those) but in the piano scene with Ock Joo Hyun.

While I do think Yonghwa is far too young for Sunah, I can't say I hate his acting. His 2 dramas he's done, he's played quiet, reserved characters. I really want to see him play a fun, outgoing, vivacious character, I think he would do a lot better with that, as it's closer to his actual personality.
I love Yonghwa though, I have since You're Beautiful, so maybe I'm just too biased. But I will watch anything he's in. I even sat through Heartstrings for him, though the fault in that lay with the writing tbh. It was awful.

I absolutely adore KSA but I really wish she'd be pair with someone closer to her age or even older. I think she's had her share of the Noona love in her previous dramas .... I want to see her in an 'old lovin' romance ... ex. CITYHALL! Her and CSW were perfect!

I am a sucker for these kind of plots so I can't help but be intrigued. but shoe designer? Why do women always get these roles? I wish there were more variety in the jobs woman in rom coms held. I know they aren't as glamourous but I want to see female scientists and engineers represented. :(
Also I hope the male isn't too young. I've already watched that jdrama where there was a romance between a 16 year old a women in her late twenties, possibly 30, and I don't think I can take that again. (Although a good lawyers wife was quite good, and that too had a teen male with a much older woman so... :/ )

I don't think Jo In sung would take this drama as his comeback vehicle. Kim bum did the noona-killer thing already so I don't think he'll do it either. I like my LMHot dark and brooding personally.
Lee Minki I could get behind. 2 eps of him in SUFBB reminded me of how awesome he is. I could also get behind Yoon Shi-yoon.

Just throwing another name out there, what about Kim Hyung-Joon?? He's doing a pretty awesome job in Glowing She as Kang Min. Granted, he's inexperienced, but based on his performance so far he might be able to pull it off.
Although, the drama isn't over yet, but he seems to be doing well with the comedy.
Then again, he's a lot younger than KSA.

Yes, KHJ is gifted for acting. No discussion about that. But i think he needs to have a few more shows under his belt before confronting an actress of that level. And yes, he's a bit young : 24.
Now that i checked, Kim Bum is only 23. Too young.
If i didn't fear typecasting or bis repetita, i would propose Yun Woo Jin (OB maknae oppa ) : He is 28.

I'm seriously think Yoon Kye Sang, lol. Now that I mentioned it above, I can't stop. He's tall too, "he looks 12" and so it could be one of those things where maybe she didn't know how old he was or found out he was a new hire AFTER the one night stand (results of after-work bar hopping?)?

I love Kim sun ah, she's so fuuny and her acting is amazing. For the lead role i hope: Kim bum, Lee min ho, jung il woo, park shi hoo,( the lead Man. Of Man of honor)... But not jung wong hwa or kim hung joong(f4) minium acting. So their acting will seem so lacking in front of a huge acress such as Kim Sun ah

I love Kim Sun-ah. I really, really do. But I'm starting to feel the same way about her that I feel about Beyonce'. I'm kind of tired of seeing her.
It could all be due to the fact that I really didn't like SOAW. But the 'I Do, I Do' plot sounds light and funny. So I might check it out.

Heh. It's funny, because I had the totally opposite reaction to KSA. I liked her in Sam Soon and then couldn't stand her in anything else UNTIL she did SOAW - then I liked her again. It might have had something to do with that sizzling Wookie Tango......
Seriously, though - I thought she did a knock-out job with SOAW.

I agree. Her acting in SOAW was phenomenal. I just hated the story. So contrived. Every moment was like a punch in the gut. Even the romance was a downer because Wookie just seemed to be crying and pityful the whole time. Just thinking about it makes me want to curl up into a ball in the corner.
But all that aside...she's a great actress. I'm just a little bit wary after SOAW.

I hear ya. I had the same reaction to watching Su Ae in TDP. Love her, but Oh, the gloom.
It was weird - after liking KSA in MNIKSS (mostly because she was such a different heroine for that time in Kdrama), I really looked forward to her successive projects - until I realized I was watching a one-trick pony. She was playing the same character over and over (I dropped CH after the 2nd ep) and really avoided her dramas until SoaW (cause I love me some Wookie and heard Junsu was going to do some singing of 'Intoxication') - and I was back on the KSA bus from the first ep, on.

Why did you drop city hall.????..the drama is amazinggggg...I thought i couldn't love KSA after MNIKSS..you just have to bear with the earlier eps...it was epic after the 5th ep or so....^^

KRW is a fine actor but the described plot for this drama calls for a younger guy. Plus, I can't see KRW bringing the funny - but to be fair, I've never seen him in anything but heavy drama. Maybe he's done a rom/com?
zsa@ Just couldn't get on the CH bus - any drama that takes 5-6 episodes to start getting better just isn't my cup of tea. And to be fair, I tried watching it twice. No go. Of course it probably didn't help that I also dropped that foolish spy drama? rom/com? thriller/mystery? awful thing she did after MNIKSS.

I actually LOVED City Hall. Once you get pass her weirdness in the first couple of episodes it really is fantastic. If KSA didn't ring your bell, then CSW definitely hit it out of the park. *insert fangirl* I don't know the technical term, but he's very expressive with his eyes. He says one thing, but his eyes tell a completely different story. How can a man so pretty be so talented? * Exit fangirl stage left*

@Cynthia ...the romcom thriller was mediocre, you're right...they made her so plain and boring there. I tried watching that 3 times coz I wanted to watch KSA badly since she has quite long hiatus after each of her work^^

I'd love to see Song Joong Ki opposite KSA in this role! I think he'd have the sass and presence to hold his own. The age difference is pretty good too. And I love him! I'd totally watch it just for him.
