Coffee’s “special poster” and additional trailer
by javabeans
I know, lots of posts about Coffee, but despite danger of Coffee overload (as if there could BE such a thing!), the latest poster (above) was too good not to share. They should’ve made that the main poster… although I suppose they’ve all been strong, and eye-catching in their own ways.
This one provides a nice contrast to the first poster, where we just saw Kim So-yeon from behind as the mysterious barista. That description still applies here, but they’ve upped the sexy assassin theme exponentially with the slinky dress and the gun tucked out of sight.
There’s also a longer trailer, which expands on the spy-action-intrigue of the first trailer, and gives us more backstory:
In the preview, Kim So-yeon explains the coffee-making process to Emperor Gojong, whom she serves as his personal barista during the time he spent in refuge at the Russian embassy. (Historically, Gojong fled there after his wife, Empress Myeongseong, was killed by the Japanese.) Right off the bat she hangs a lantern on the coffee danger, telling him of its scent and bitterness — and how its strong taste is sometimes exploited as a vehicle for poisoning.
Meanwhile, we have spies on the Japanese side (including Yoo Sun) working with double agents on the Russian side (Joo Jin-mo, Kim So-yeon). There are hints of romantic entanglement between Joo and Kim, but once their mission is enacted, they must act as strangers. Furthermore, Joo is threatened with her life — if he fails to assassinate the emperor, she dies. Kim So-yeon is resigned to her fate, telling him that she sees no way for herself to escape alive, but he vows to protect her. Just as the emperor, having put his trust in her, assures her that he’ll protect her as well. Cue conflict!

even more stunning is the costumes! She looks beautiful in the white hanboks. I love the costumes so much! The costumes themselves have so much symbolism and meaning!

she doesn't wear any hanbok... those are the European dresses of the specific era ( watch a bit of Victorian Era British movies )
btw the corset looks better on a woman with a C cup rather than A/B cup ... but this will happen when actresses in klala land will have at least the size 8 and not 2.
KSY is stunning but in my eyes their use of the corset looks a but flawed in the pic with the tray ( with such a beautiful woman the designers could do better) I say so just because I'm used with another look on a woman with a corset ... from wiki and my own knowledge about period fashion
corsets intended to exert serious body-shaping force (as in the Victorian era - the time of our movie) were "long" (extending down to and beyond the natural waist), laced in back, and stiffened with boning.
but our heroine enjoys a fabric "corset" ... it is more like an waistcoat... it is a bit loose ... they just watched some period movies and didn't document their costumes therefore they made a corset that a girl of our days would wear.(I had an identical black one)
A corset was that tough/ strong as a bulletproof vest. When the Russian Princesses were executed didn't die firsthand because the corsets kept them alive - we are talking about the same period of time.

There are a lot of promo stills here on DB for this production, but please continue to bring them on, JB - the pics are stunning. Beautiful, sexy people in period piece clothing just can't be beat. From the hair to the makeup to the exquisite clothing, this movie? drama? is certainly setting the stage for some fine acting (I hope) with a tightly written plot. **crossing fingers for luck**

The poster is gorgeous and the trailer terrific ( the resolution of the image, the sharpness ). I bet it will be a hit in Korea because they love historical productions, and coffee almost as much as kimchi. :)

That's one gorgeous poster (and actors) indeed... but I'm starting to get a little worried about overexposure. Not about here at DB, but because the production team is putting so many shots out there...
I don't want too see much of a film/drama beforehand, but this is one going to start tipping over into the 'I have seen the film through film stills' territory very, VERY soon.

I agree - it looks awesome, but after watching this new trailer I'm starting to get that "saw the whole movie by watching the trailer" feeling. :(
Amazed by the gorgeousness of the actors and the period setting/costumes, though.

Well I think it'll be OK. *crosses fingers. I'm not sure if I got the meaning of "overexposure" right, but I thought that the Crucible trailer was also kind of telling the whole story, but the movie was still very good. The two trailers are pretty much the same thing but with different clips (boasting those costumes which I want. Now.) Okay, maybe not but that's what I feel about it. I don't know Korean so it's probably not a good idea to say that they're the same.
Anyways, but there's still a lot of things to figure out, I think. I lot of conflicts to be resolved, such as what happens to the two spies after their plan succeeds/fails? Does the king die? Do people couple up (*snicker. for my own selfish desires)? How do they assassinate the king? I'm also curious how their relationships will be like. Anyways it's almost the premier date (I lie once again...) so I doubt they'll let out any more trailers. :) Hope this'll be a great movie!

I'm crossing my fingers too. You're My Pet was overexposed and it certainly didn't help. But then it never looked as good as this one has - which generally gives me a much higher production quality vibe.
The trailer doesn't worry me so much, it's when you get pictures and more pictures of the same thing that it starts feeling overexposed. You know, 'here she is carrying the tray from this angle', and 'here she is carrying the tray from that angle', and 'here she is....' Some teasers yeah that pull me in, but not a breakdown of every scene. Okay, we are not quite at that point yet, but I hope that's it for pre-released images.
When's the film coming out anyway?

Oh right, I forgot to add - You're My Pet was those stories with no plot. While I'm guessing at least the glam and exploding things will spice up Coffee up. (and it seems very action-packed). And plus, (this is kinda going in a loop, lol) I'm expecting more from the trailer than just a boring old movie. ;)

Beautiful! I'm all in for romance on top of this badass mission to assassinate the king. Joo Jin-mo and Kim Seo-yeon? I'm in. Dammit, so excited! I want them to couple up, too, and (hopefully) no open-ended ending...I personally don't favor those. Because I just can't use my imagination for my life. Anyways, thanks for these wonderful Coffee-related news! :)

Looks to me like they are mixing costumes from different eras, which is fine by me. If it makes the actors look good, it's okay with me.
The above poster is awesome. The gown is of the modern times. I hope she actually wears that in the drama even tough it's not characteristic of the drama era.

Aww, they changed the poster's sub-title:
From "Coffee: Beautiful Poison" (가비: 아름다운 독(毒)) to "Coffee: Gojong's Last Coffee" (가비: 고종의 마지막 커피).
(yet, the sub-title still remains as "Beautiful Poison" in the trailer...)
...and what's interesting was that coffee is in Tamna the Island, right???
Actually, I just searched, and "coffee" in modern Russian is "Кофе" (kofee)

I don't know much about Korean alphabet but K and G have the same symbol, like P and B so the word could be : "kopi" = coffee (f has no symbol) - am I right?

I believe the PD of Jejeongwon has injected the coffee drinking culture, the queen being assassinated and the King escaped to Russian Embassy in the drama. Story/history is not new, but the plot may be, I hope?

In terms of acting Kim so young is just a perfect choice, such an amazing actress so realistic, she's good in all genres melo, comedy, romance...and very very beautiful. But not fan of joo jin mo , he's handsome but his acting is somehow boring.
