Yoochun turns into a prince for new drama

He’s played Prince Charming types before (the noble aristocrat in Sungkyunkwan Scandal and the chaebol in Miss Ripley), but now Park Yoochun is going to play an actual prince for Rooftop Prince, a new SBS drama to air in March.

The story sounds like a fantasy fusion piece, unfolding around a Joseon-era crown prince who loses his beloved princess. He and his trusty vassals skip forward 300 years into the 21st century. How that happens we don’t yet know, but that gives him the chance to meet a woman in Seoul bearing the same face as the dead princess. Insert joke here about how they all look alike?

No info yet on whether this will be a comedy or a melo (or, heck, a horror-action-thriller), but picturing a noble Joseon prince (basically Yoochun’s appearance in Sungkyunkwan, but even more regal) living in a tiny rooftop box of a room brings me an automatic chuckle. That’s prime comedy stuff, no? Forget how he’ll win the girl — how will he navigate the city? Figure out technology? Manage the newfangled bathrooms? If he’s literally time-jumping (rather than being reborn in a new life), then he’ll be a fish out of water, a nobody, a poor jobless dude. HEE. It’s like Vampire Idol meets Jeon Woo Chi meets Encino Man. Bring it on.

Quite a pedigree on the producers of Rooftop Prince: writing is Lee Hee-myung of Tomato, Success Story of a Bright Girl, and Bad Family, while directing is PD Shin Yoon-sub of KAIST, Love in Heaven, and Why Did You Come To Our House.

For those of you who are questioning it...YES, this is the OFFICIAL remake of the Thousand Years of Love...Except it's been twisted up with the guy being the lead this time unlike the other one. Even though something like this was made in the past, I can't wait for this! XDDD Yoochun seems to be a rising/promising actor too~ The plot seems like it's going to be fun with the modern twists (when I read another summary for this new one). I wonder who the female lead is going to be though... O__o

The plot kinda reminds me of 1000 years of love but I'm a sucker for story lines like that so I'm in :D I like Micky Yoochun, he is one of the few idols that when I watch act I forget his idol status cos he isn't that bad at acting.

Finger crossed the main girl is good!

Actually there was an old hong kong drama that depicted Emperor Yong Zhen and the assassin who wanted to assassinate him Lo Si Niang, who fast forward and landed in the 21st century. The episodes where he tried to adapt to modern life was hilarious. He used his understanding of princes' constant struggle to be the Crown Prince and applied it to a power struggle of a Chaebol family in an organization.

Yoochun is an ex member of TVXQ and SM used to be his agency. They have unresolved issues in the form of an ongoing lawsuit (2 years and counting now!) Where Yoochun goes, SM doesn't follow and vice versa. There is zero chances of any SM actors working with Park Yoochun.

Its to do with the lawsuit.. this might be a little TLDR

JYJ sued SM
some of the issues are:
unfair contract length, as well as unfair profit distribution as well as general overwork. (They promoted constantly back and forth between Japan and Korea)
Under the old contract JYJ would have been stuck in SM for 15 years including military and would receive a minuscule amount of profit
There was also the accusation that SM misappropriated funds
The copyrights of the songs JYJ composed under SM also do not belong to JYJ

So far the court has ruled in favour of JYJ and has ordered SM not to interfere

SM are actively working to block JYJ from the industry
(JYJ cant go on music and variety shows despite being very popular/selling lots of albums)
but SM has less clout in the drama industry and surprisingly Jaejoong and Yoochun have so far been succesful

but there was one instance of Jaejoong being cast in Poseidon and then subsequently dropped for Yunho

SM will also not allow their idols to work with CF companies that hire JYJ
Album distributors that work with JYJ

They kinda tried to do the same thing to the HOT members that left (and they succeeded; that group did not last long) but since JYJ are successful doing dramas, can compose their own music, and still have major CF deals and an international fanbase (they can get revenue from touring other countries) JYJ are doing OK even with the blocking

It's the contrary, SME didn't want any of their artist to do anything with Yoochun.

Yoochun originally come from an idol group name TVXQ, which under SM entertainment company. In 2009, three of the group including Yoochun decided to sued the company on the base of unfair contract (you can google it). The court favor in JYJ (Yoochun current group) side and allow them to pursue any entertainment activity freely.

Since that, SME has been trying to hinder all of JYJ activity. SKKS, Miss Ripley got good rating and can be seen as successful. But Yoochun got ZERO appearance in variety and music show (despite being a singer). The last accident comes from the Jeju 7 Wonder concert where JYJ as the official ambassador and supposed to do a concert were pulled out at the last minutes and replace by SNSD and f(x) [both are from SME].

I suggested you to google it more, because it sure shade some new light to Kpop ^^

I immediately thought oktap bang cat! I hoped it would be something similar. Since I'm already thinking of jung da bin wouldn't it be great if his princess would be ham eun jung a la coffee house times 2! But that tiny oktap bang with a court's worth of aids and a prince used to luxury, definitely good way to start.

It should be a comedy. Comedies offer a lot more possibilities for that kind of scenario I think...so please a rom-com!!! (plus I really don't lile melo!)

I actually rewatched Kate and Leopold just moments ago because of the comments here, and oh boy, imagining Yoochun with his Lee Sun Joon character (hopefully less uptight) in the modern world acting all royal (just like Leopold's character) and at the same time freaked out with all the modern stuff around him (insert derp chun-face here), had me cracking up like there's no tomorrow. :D ahhh, he would be perfect for this role, really. *fingers crossed*

YAY!! Yoochun back on screen as a prince.. ME LIke! I wasn't a big fan of him acting Melodramatic on miss ripley but I have only seen him as a prince in the Japanese drama on Beetv for a few short episodes.. I just hope the story is good. Otherwise i'll just be staring at him for eye candy and hope the story will pass..

Now we can only wait till the air date.. :)
