Moon Chae-won turns down Yoochun’s Rooftop
by girlfriday
There’s been some chatter about Moon Chae-won (The Princess’s Man) possibly being up for the lead role opposite Park Yoochun in his new drama Rooftop Prince, but she has now officially declined the role. Her agency reports that she received the offer but found after reading the script that it had a lot more historical material than expected, and she didn’t want to be pigeonholed with another sageuk. It’s too bad, since I thought she’d be good for the role. But now the bigger question is, who’d be better?
Rooftop Prince is the upcoming SBS drama about a Joseon-era prince who travels forward in time to the present day, zooming past 300 years to find a second chance with his first love. Though my mind is already having problems with this math — unless your first love left you and climbed into a wormhole, 300-years-later girl is just gonna be a doppelganger, no? — the premise still promises wacky fun, so I’m all over this. Time travel, a spoiled prince who suddenly becomes a lowly nobody, and cute romance? Sold. I’m already laughing at all the bidet jokes to come.
The pair’s Sungkyunkwan and Princess resumes had everyone excited for the coupling, though I’m assuming most of the story still takes place in the present, with a healthy dose of Joseon-era flashback, since he is a time-traveler after all. Unless they take a sharp left turn with the cast, I’m pretty much onboard. I kind of have a soft spot for wacky romantic comedies that invoke illogical uses of science fiction. Blame the 80s. If he takes a DeLorean to the 21st century, I’ll be in love with this drama from day one.
Rooftop Prince will be helmed by writer Lee Hee-myung of Bad Family (woot!) and PD Shin Yoon-sub of KAIST. It follows Take Care of Us, Captain on Wednesday-Thursday and premieres March 14 on SBS. I guess the search for a new lost princess begins, so put up your fantasy casting lists now.

The plot sounds like this B-movie I saw from the 90s.
Its with....wait I should look this up .... it's with Jean Reno and Christina Applegate, called JUST VISITING
- totally an adaption
Jean Reno went with a jester in the future. While the jester fell in love with the girl next door and stayed in our time, Christina went with Jean back into past.
...will they have a jester too? I smell Bromance :)

The reincarnated first love + time travel reminds me a bit of Inuyasha.
This looks really different from most kdramas and hopefully good. It really depends who they cast as the girl.
Will this be airing at the same time as the other time-travel-for-a-second-chance-at-love drama?

Actually, you're not the first to mention it since the first time the plot was revealed that was one of the main dramas people compared it to, right next to Kate and Leopold.
@Laica, dude, I am ashamed as a Inuysha fan that I totally forgot to make that connection. Except it was Kagome going into the past.... and she was the reincarnation of Inuyasha's first love. Nice comparison since that's the first time someone compared this show to Inuysha.
P.S. Back to the Future for the WIN!

I really heard the rumor about SBS contacting Kim So Eun n I am all for it... Even tho I love to see Moon Chae Won in this more (YC can learn a lot from her n she is pretty n famous) I agree w some1 who said that Moon looks a bit older compared to YC when KSE is such a perfect match w him. If PD really eyed MCW for the lead, KSE is also another good choice, they have something similar somehow. Beside I am bias I love KSE I feel it is such a pity for a pretty girl like her not to have any lead role until now when she is not bad at acting at all. I want to see what she can do.
I think MCW is right when rejecting the role, but I dont think her reason is the real one. This is def a more modern drama. I think MCW is on the roll now and she ofcoz wants to be in female lead drama or with more famous actors (calm down I am YC's fan and I admire his acting, it is just the prejudice actors have for idols always exists).
I am all for Kim So Eun please please... I feel like she is the type that every1 will like.

You all have a point IMO, but I still agree with the first poster - I mean, just cause YC was a good actor doesn't mean giving him a lead with no experience was an innately good idea - we all got lucky.
Just look at "heading to the ground" and "Paradise Ranch" for examples were it DIDN'T work out at all! In fact, I remember when SKKS was announced and my first thought was "omg, after the HTTG, didn't anyone think to have them try a SUPPORTING role first???" (and I'm a dbsk fan ^^;;).
So I don't think it's hypocrisy, just the knowledge that you may get lucky once or twice with raw idol actors, but that luck won't hold forever...

everybody forgets about the beetv drama
i dont consider the banjun stuff because that was pure fan service: no effort to act required whatsoever
Jaejoong and Yoochun do have acting talent
sunao ni narenakute was a trainwreck in terms of plot but Jaejoong pulled off his character well, and i liked protect the boss
as someone who became attached to the group because of SKKS i would have been ready to pan him claws sharpened if he had sucked in SKKS.
I didnt even know he was an idol when i watched SKKS for what its worth
I also like his acting in ripley even though the scriptwriter could have done his character more justice
I think "as long as it’s not an idol/actress" can be used as a general statement since idol actors who CANT act are the general rule with idols like TOP, Yoochun, Jaejoong and T-ara's eunjung/jiyeon who show promise as well as, Shinhwa Eric, Baby VOX Yoon Eun Hye being the exception rather than the rule.
People say "if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen"
if we apply this to idols in acting i think if they can take the heat i dont have a problem with them but if they cant act they should gtfo.

When rumor starting flying regarding the leading lady, I knew right away that Moon Chae-won wasn't going to take the role. She had 2 successful sageuk & it isn't a smart ideal to keep continuing those role. It's time for her to explore other option.
Anyhow, this drama had the potential to be big, so any actress should be lucky to get this role.
Somehow, it's still kind of funny though. Every news kept saying Yoochun is the leading man, but according to Yoochun's rep "nothing is official yet."

I can't believe people here are mentioning names like Park Shin Hye or Park Min Young - I don't want to offend anyone and this is just my opinion - but those two are honestly the last actresses I'd want for this role, they wouldn't fit this at all with their one dimensional acting! I want someone with real talent not one facial expression. Yoochun's a beginner actor, he could use a really experienced actress like it was in Miss Ripley.

I'm all in for Kim So Eun *fingers crossed*
But I don't want to get my hope up too high either, last year she's rumored to play in TPM but she chose ATK instead.

I was rooting for Kim So Eun (the girl's got it!), but then I suddenly remembered Jeong So Min and how much I enjoyed her performance in PK despite the lack of a solid plot.
I think she'd totally nail this. But I haven't heard about her in so long, I wonder if I should get my hopes up at all.
Oh well, whoever gets the role better be able to bring graceful spunk (what an oxymoron). And please, let it not be another Kpop idol, especially from SMTown (they pick talented musicians, but their actresses are seriously so lacking).

It's definitely not gonna be an SM Towner. Yoochun's not exactly on friendly relations with them...and I'm sure the last thing on SM's mind is sending one their own to star with him.

Han Hyo Joo
Min Hyo Rin
Park Bo Young (gods, i'd love to see her make a drama comeback!)
Moon Geun Young (how interesting would that be?)
Park Shin Hye (i seriously think that she could just pull off any role)

Some good candidates mentioned by some. But I think you have to keep the age in mind. It's just as important as actresses charm. I thought Lee Da Hae was great in Ripley, but she looked more like his aunt then lover. Some of the candidates mentioned here simply look too old. I thinkPark Bo young, Park Ha Sun or good choices though^^ They are both hot, young, and cute at this time. Park Shin Hye is good as well, but I think most Yoo Chun fans would prefer Park Bo Young and Park Ha Sun over Shin Hye at this time. Min Hyo Rin is another good choice, she's pretty hot with her movie being a success. Moon Geun Young is okay, but don't think she'd do it. I'd assume she's looking for something that would take her over the top. She needs something good cause her biggest hits were in her teens, and she hasn't been able to do much in her twenties as far as ratings or etc. Cinderella Sister was her only success. And it seems she does better with non romcom projects. Han Hyo Joo wouldn't do this project.
