Kim Sung-soo hosts SNL Korea

I haven’t posted on every host of the new Saturday Night Live Korea, but Kim Sung-soo (Bad Love) is a name I haven’t seen a lot of lately so I figured fans might want the heads up. (He has been around, but I don’t watch dailies like More Charming By the Day, which is his last TV role, and he hasn’t done that much else in the past couple years.)
That means Kim’s hosting gig will air this Saturday, January 14, as he takes his place as SNL Korea’s latest host. I wonder how he’ll do in the gig, because unlike some of the other hosts who have strong comedy roots, Kim has a rather chic, cool image. Then again, Kim Joo-hyuk (Bang-ja Chronicles) went against his own image and turned in a pretty great performance as the show’s inaugural host in Episode 1.
In Episode 2, I thought Gong Hyung-jin (Chuno) did an okay job hosting, but because the material was a cut below, there just wasn’t as much funny. While I enjoyed that first episode, truth be told it was the best outing I’ve seen (though I haven’t watched them all). That’s no huge surprise, since SNL is notoriously uneven anyway, and it makes sense that the best episode would be the one that had time to prepare, compared to the ones they’re churning out on a week-by-week basis.
Kim Sung-soo said of his upcoming appearance, “I’ll be showing everything that I as an actor can show you. I’ll take on everything, from the sci-fi ‘Vectorman’ [from Kim’s 1999 movie] to comedy and horror and satire. I’ve been so busy laughing that the time has flown.”
Below are the hosts who have taken on the gig following Kim Joo-hyuk, such as Gong Hyung-jin for the second show, then comedy actor Kim In-kwon (Quick, You’re Beautiful) for the following episode, musician and music professor Kolleen Park, theater and screen actor Kim Dong-wook (Coffee Prince, Partner), and movie/drama actor Kim Sang-kyung (My Country Calls).

KSS and Oh Ji ho are the 2 best looking male celebs in Korea (followed by others like Song Seung heon, Jo Han sun, etc.).

I'm not sure Kim Sung Soo has that image any more or at least not from his variety show appearances. If you are familiar with some of his appearances in variety shows (especially his episodes on Family Outing), then you'll probably know he won't have many problems in this regard

I just came here to say that too... I was so happy for them and then they went and pulled that crap... Sigh. Its so sad really because not everyone understands or cares how hurtful blackface is... Why SNL Korea, why? I had such high hopes for you.

It's when a non-black person puts on makeup to "simulate" a black person's face, but the practice is historically problematic.

Once a national pastime for a good chunk of US history, blackface is generally frowned upon nowadays in the states (although there are always a few idiots on Halloween who seem to think its' perfectly acceptable). This is not the first time I've heard about blackface being used in Korea (recalling the Bubble Sisters).
I absolutely cringe whenever I see it.

I honestly find it shocking that anyone, anywhere, would attempt it these days. Unless of course they are doing it to be deliberately provocative, and not in a good way. In this world today, black face is either racist or incredibly ignorant.

So... if you do impressions of celebrities that are African decent and isn't a African decent, it's considered as blackface and it's dehumanizing and racist?
So a white guy won't be able to impersonate Charles Barkley, Chris Rock, or Obama?
What about the stereotyping of gay people? Or how about other races? Why isn't that dehumanizing?

Except all that stuff IS dehumanizing, absolutely. No one has said that it ISN'T cruel to stereotype and mock gay people or that yellowface is acceptable.
If you put black make-up on your face and "act" "black," that is blackface and it is racist. Like other "faces," it presumes there is a specific set of behaviors -- usually negative -- unique to a specific race or ethnicity. There is absolutely a stereotype in South Korea and in many, many other countries (including the USA! And it is important to remember that the USA's media, which definitely depends upon racial stereotypes, informs countries without significant populations of, say, people of African or Middle Eastern descent) of black people as violent, sexually aggressive or wanton, and athletic at the expense of intelligence.
There isn't an excuse.
(And no, a white guy should not impersonate any of those celebrities, for the reason that I can't imagine any scenario in which a white guy impersonating Charles Barkley, Chris Rock, or Obama WOULDN'T have any racist connotations.)

Doing" blackface" is cringeworthy and definitely inappropriate, but we can't judge Korea or the rest of world based on the experiences with black/white relations in the US.
They do black in Japan and the rest of Asia; is it ignorant - sure, but they don't realize the connotations of doing it.
Even in South and Central America, blackface is done despite a significant pop. having African ancestry (many Latinos who clearly have African ancestry get offended you refer to them as black - since to them, they are just darker skinned Latinos and not like "blacks in the US" which they see in a negative light).
A no. of years ago, the Mexican Postal Service did a series of "Sambo" postal stamps and thought nothing of it.
Not saying that they should continue it, but it's done out of ignorance rather than spite due to having a diff. cultural context.
Btw, the US media still engages in "Yellowface" b/c, you know, it's still OK to make fun of Asians.

Not a fan of 'ethnic' humor of any sort, really. Even when I was a kid, the 'Polish Jokes' and 'Wop Jokes' and 'Wetback Jokes' made me uncomfortable. 'Black Jokes' were even worse, to me, because even as a child I understood that making fun of someone many considered to be the lowest of society was an even deeper insult.
No, I don't feel that way myself. I'm just saying I'm aware that some do (and more did, then) - and to me, it's the worst type of humor to make fun of someone from a mean or fearful place.

Yeah, and absolutely all of that stuff is racist. The prevalence of racist imagery -- and blackface and yellowface are both absolutely racist, regardless of where it's going down; when someone of the majority uses make-up and stereotypes behavior to imitate someone of a persecuted minority, that is offensive and it is racist.
Racism isn't fueled simply by spite, but by ignorance as well. The writers and actors may not have intended to be cruel, but their actions were and are cruel and it is disingenuous to excuse such cruelties on the basis that "they don't know any better." (It's a bit patronizing, too.)

I think the sterotyping of gay people for comedic purposes is more offending then the impersonation of the Dream Girls lip syncing to Beyonce. But then again... I wouldn't know.

@um.. They're both a mockery, so they're both offensive.
As a black girl myself, I was pretty disappointed that the show decided to take that route for the sake of comedy. It just left an all around bad feeling and impression on me after watching the clip on youtube. Ugh. Not even funny or cool. :(

Looking at the host line up right now, while SNL Korea is still in its infancy, I'd like to see more female hosts. Jung Soo-young is a big name in our realm, I'm just wondering if SNL Korea has thought about having her to host. She can totally pull a crazy-off with Jung Young Nam with something like the sketch InvisiKid part 2.

Iiinteresting. He was just on Running Man this week which continues over to next week. I actually think out of everyone so far Kim In Kwon was the best host. I pretty much laughed throughout. Although the skit on the bus might have gone over the line.

Kim Sung Soo does not have much screen time in Running Man (perhaps i wish to see more of him :P) but he was not invisible or boring... plus, he was simply wonderful in Family Outing... I can still remember his long wig and his ridiculous outfit when he danced 2PM Heartbeat with FO cast... He isn't the quiet shy type - he has potential in variety...

KSS has no problem poking fun of himself since he's certainly not lacking in cool confidence.
In RM, he was the only one of the other "killers" to make a crack at Ji Jin hee (his elder) about probably should've eaten before the shoot (as JJH was munching); the other 2, esp. Chunderella would never have dared to make such a crack.
Also, when KSS's name was called on the loudspeaker declaring him "out", it was funny seeing him walk so nonchalantly to his seat.
On FO, he took the joking about his "Vectorman" days in stride and had was simply hilarious w/ his cool confidence in putting Hyori in "her place" about her single status (that she should stop going after the good-looking guys; I guess she ended up listening to KSS).
Most other male guests were a bit intimidated by Hyori on FO, but not KSS (Cha Seung won would be one of the few others).
Jo Han sun was on FO w/ KSS and he was like an eager puppy in contrast to KSS' cool confidence.

oh, guess I'll be seeing him THERE then, LOL. To date I've only seen Kim Sung Soo in two things: Full House, where he was very stiff and proper (but still sweet) and Delicious Love and Sex...where he was quite often very stiff (ha), still sweet, and not proper at all.

Is anyone watching Comedy Big League? It recently started and I caught the first half of the 2nd episode. It's closer to Gag Concert but I actually found it pretty hilarious. From what I saw, there was at least one part that made me laugh out loud in every skit.

Well if by TV roles you also include regular TV appearance, Kim Sung Soo has been one of the co-hosts on 승승장구 (talk show helmed by Kim Seung Woo) for quite a while now. Haven't really watched much of that talk show because it's not easy to find english subs but people who have seen that show could probably gauge whether he's got a witty personality/has good hosting skills.

Sadly, Kim Sung-soo has already been replaced as an MC on Win Win. Don't know the details of him leaving, perhaps it was because of the Red Scarf movie. He also had a pretty big part in the reality series Invincible Baseball Team, which is really difficult to find w/English subs as well.

UUUGGGH... I have watched snl korea in the past but the fact that they are doing blackface makes me sick. They dont get a pass because of ignorance because if they can take rap, R&B (african american created) and Jazz (african american inspired/created) -then they can figure out that blackface is an insult. I understand imitating a celebrity can be funny, but its when you say- "i am going to darken my skin and be a fool" is when you stop making fun of a person and start making fun of a group people. Just like Asians cant change their eyes, black people cant change their skin, neither quality is a deformity but they sure are treated that way.
