Han Ji-min to play princess to Yoochun’s Rooftop Prince
by javabeans
So: Moon Chae-won is out, and Han Ji-min is in for Yoochun‘s new fantasy-sageuk-contemporary fusion drama Rooftop Prince.
Interesting choice, but one I can get behind; I can see Han Ji-min easily fitting into a fusion sageuk romance (see: Capital Scandal). She can be perky and adorable, though she’s not strictly confined to bubbly roles (her current turn in Padam Padam is proof enough of that). She’s also done sageuk before (Yi San) as well as contemporary fare, so all around, I’m pleased with the casting. Moon Chae-won would’ve been great, sure, but I understand her wanting to get away from yet more sageuk princess imagery after two huge sageuk hits, back to back (The Princess’s Man, Bow: The Ultimate Weapon).
And while Han Ji-min is four years older than Yoochun, (1) I think we’re just going to have to get used to the noona-romance as a fixture in dramaland, and (2) she’s also tiny, which somehow makes the age gap less of an issue in my head. I don’t know why. It must be the mental image of him towering over her, which mitigates the age-gap power-balance. (Contrast that with Lee Da-hae in Miss Ripley, for instance, who was eye to eye with Yoochun and I thought resembled his big sister more than innocent (seeming) love interest. But they also didn’t quite spark in the chemistry department, which is an altogether different issue.)
Plot refresher: Yoochun is a Joseon-era crown prince whose beloved princess dies. He catapults himself (and a crew of vassals) to the 21st century, where he meets his beloved’s doppelganger. Craziness ensues, in a story that traverses past and present. I am SO all over this premise.
Rooftop Prince premieres on March 14, following SBS’s current Wednesday-Thursday drama Please Take Care of Us, Captain.

After Padam Padam, I've definately warmed up so much more to Han Ji Min. I used to like her, but I saw her so confined...by her height. haha (superficial I KNOW!).
But this is really great.

@Jo: I especially like her because of her height. I look the same way, small, cute just not as pretty. I guess we all like actresses that look a little like we do. It's sympathy.

YUPSSSSS!! :D I love her since I've watched her in that dramas: Cain and Abel (AWESOME drama), Capital Scandal, and Great Inheritance ~ woot woot!
Ah, right! I am just wondering that if anybody would watch that drama called "Great Inheritance" before...?? I've noticed that everybody seem like they never watch this at mostly.....Quite interesting. It was gooood and funny & I would like to recommend this to all you guys!! ;)
I am glad to hear about this new! I will be looking forward to this (IF I have time to watch, hopefully so.)

IMO, Yoochun has yet to be at the top level for his acting skills. Yes, he's getting there and I am up to see him playing a culture shock prince and see if he has broaden his range of acting.
Previous dramas, he has carried the not so bubbly characters so this sure will be a nice turn.
AS for HJM, I''m pretty sure she will be good for this though I was thinking of a younger lady playing the princess roles.

Whoa. Definitely didn't see this one coming! But I'm in! I like her repertoire and she's good in Padam Padam (currently watching) :)
Had to look up her height in DramaFever at the "she's tiny" comment though. LOL! But yeah. I'm with ya JB! I like the towering as opposed to the eye-to-eye...maybe 'cause I'm tinier than she is >_>

I wasn't sure whether JB meant 'tiny' as in size (petiteness) or 'height'. Well, all Korean actresses are skinny/thin, but is HJM really that 'tiny' in terms of height compared to other Korean actresses? They generally don't seem super tall to me.
She's taller than me though :-) and people always think I'm younger than I am.

@nickynisa, Personal attack, what? How is it that I'm attacking you by pointing out that the fault lies on you? What fault... fault in the sense that you're using the reason 'I barely know her' to support your first comment that you 'expected someone more famous'. JB posted her opinion. Wouldn't that be a catalyst for you to 'research' as to why or how she was able to make such comment? You can ask other people, 'how was her acting in this', 'how is she looked upon in Korea', etc. You would have made a better comment IF you made time to know more about the actress becaus this way you can either choose to reject our opinion or to support it.
Your 'but I barely know her' statement is what angered me the most. It's like it's all up to you to decide who's famous or not, who's better or not.

Not sure about Lee Da Hae. It's arguable that Lee Da Hae has had more success than Han Ji Min.
Just looking at ratings, Lee Da Hae has had much more success and hit projects.

-Uhm, arguably, LDH starred in My Girl which is a cult favorite among teen/romantic comedy fans but HJM was in Yi San. Yi San is one of the most popular and also highest rated dramas. I wouldn't bluff off HJM's credentials like that. :D

I don't know Hallyu. I was talking in Korea. That's what I know. Most non entertainment internet news followers in Korea would know Lee Da Hae more than Han Ji Min.
I think people here have different idea of popularity vs. how many people would know someone.
Yes, my girl may have been popular but that wasn't my point.
My statement was based on whether who's name and projects most people would know most. This is based on Korea not much based on Hallyu or other countries.
I do know about Han Ji Min, watched most of her projects. But Kim Ha Neul and Han Ji Min are in a completely different realm.
Historical drama averaged in min 20 ratings peaking around 30 and mini series dramas peaking around 30 is massively different in terms of trend and cultural influence. You do not see card boards in front of stores on the streets advertising like they do with kim sam soon, my girl, and etc. characters. You do not see all the cable reruns. All the internet downloads.
Cult following dramas I would think are more like You're beautiful. My Girl was a national syndrome.
But yes, I do think Han Ji Min deserves more credit.
Just the other day me and my friends were talking about why is she so underrated.
It's simple. If anyone thinks that more people in Korea would no Han Ji Min's face than Lee Da Hae's face upon hearing their names, they are crazy.

Re: sanity
She has a more favorable image than LDH, that's true: no controversy with a pretty wholesome image. LDH is the better actress though. PMY and MCW are better actresses as well actually. HJM is usually serviceable in her roles but she lacks the spunk and assertiveness in her acting to make her presence very memorable. That's why she's not as well known internationally. She has a good personality though and is very well liked in Korea.

yeah, she may be tiny but she's gotten quite skinny that the cute, youthful look got a wee bit lost. my theory is that HJM knew that before she doesn't possess that matured look to play the mature roles. so, she needed to reinvent a bit her image. but now she's gonna play alongside a younger actor so i'm curious to see how they'll look standing beside each other.
anyway, this girl can create chemistry (so far!) with her male cast. plus, Yoochun loves noonas. heh! he's been dating them since he's 17 or 18. lololol

@jeure - THANK YOU for that.
Han Ji Min is gorgeous, talented...AND youthful looking...✔
.. from my perspective, being only *slightly* younger than her....Í don't understand why it's considered so odd, or not permissible, that she should be older than the male lead.
There are times when I think my fellow-females-of-the-world have been too deeply indoctrinated into the philosophy that pairings should *always* have the male as elder.
To this ...I say...why? (other than extreme gaps in years for relationships in which child-bearing is the primary concern)....why shouldn't the woman be ....um *free* ...to have been born before the man?
Not ranting or anything....just sayin' that love-connections happen between people...not ages.
Not responding to any post in particular....but I'm going to guess that Yoochun's status as *idol* to thousands of teens will have an army of them angry that the female-lead doesn't represent their demographic. But afterall...it's just a drama.....I think the pairing is lovely. Look forward to it.

I agree with you.
Nor is four years very much of a gap at all (either direction, whether male or female is older).
I also wonder if we didn't know their birth dates, would we be commenting so much on these age differences? It seems to me that very often these discussions are driven by that, but I think in real life you can line up a 100 people that are the same age and that will look very different in age. Some people love people who are the same age them but look older/younger, other people love someone who is younger/older but look the same age... or not. I don't think it matters. I think the only time it would bother me in a drama would be if someone very clearly looks high school (and I mean 'high school' - not like in Dream High 2 where they are definitely NOT looking high schoolish), and the other person looks, 30, 40 or more.
By the way, my grandma was 10 years older than my granddad.

I became a fan because of SKKS
and i think as long as he can act well, and i think he can he should go for it
Yoochun has so far been positively received and its not like he's a deadweight
I mean come on, Song Seung Hoon isnt exactly a paragon of acting talent so the same argument is applicable to people like him as well,
The public likes what the public likes
And being an idol does not mean you have inherently less talent
I think Yoon Eun Hye and Eric prove that.
Idol or no idol
Yoochun can act
Just sit back and enjoy the show

currently watching Yoochun in Sangkyunkwan Scandal and I am impressed at the way he's carrying the role of the lead. I knew him from his DBSK days but never watched his previous works...cannot wait for rooftop prince!!!!!!!

well you can't really blame the guy for snatching the role since he's blocked from Korean&Japanese entertainment industry. Acting's the only way he can make those headlines these days.

I think he is better than idol turned actor out there, and his acting was not bad. I didn't even knew that Yoochun is an idol when I watched SKKS back there.
yes he is a newbie and yes there's still much to learn but he proved he fit to be call as an actor (he received 7 award because of SKKS) , so far he received positive feedback for his acting.
I heard that this drama was tailored made for Yoochun, SBS really tried to get YC signed in this drama even Yoochun will be very packed with JYJ world tour and upcoming album.

I don't see why her being 4 years older should be an issue. She can pass younger and it doesn't have to be a noona romance in the drama if they make her character younger, or his character older. Isn't that what they do all the time in Hollywood with people in their late 20's playing high school kids.

The most recent thing I've seen Han Ji Min in was Detective K, and I thought she was pretty terrible in that, completely miscast. She was better in Yi San. Is she doing a good job in Padam Padam? I haven't watched that drama, but all the praise seems to be directed at the bromance and JWS and KB.

Thanks! Maybe she'll do fine here then. From what I've seen, I think her acting is generally so-so actually, that's why comments about her being a much better actress than the other actresses mentioned confuses me. If she has to do cutesy or bubbly for this drama, then I hope she's improved, because when she had to do it for Great Inheritance (2006 drama with Kim Jae Won), she was pretty much over-acty and awkward the whole time.

I was so distracted by her costuming in that movie, they had her wear such tight hanboks. I can't imagine her being very comfortable in them and it kind of showed in her acting because she came off pretty awkward whenever she was supposed to be seductive. I just couldn't buy her as the femme fatale. For what it's worth Kim Myung-min wasn't that great as the detective either. As a whole, that movie was pretty mediocre.

I'm not a fan of yoochun's acting, but I guess I can see him acting the role as a Joseon era prince and some modern chaebol. And han jimin! *gushes* I think she's so pretty and perfect for this role. The premise of time traveling looks interesting, so I'm kinda looking forward to this drama. XD

Interesting choice. Although I haven't seen much of her work. I watched her on Resurrection and Cain and Abel. I hated those characters to the bit (her existance washed down resurrection IMO). I don't know if it was her acting or the character themselves but I didn't feel any emotional pull, instead i felt like slapping her face to make her come to her senses. If she's going to pull another of that role. Consider me out.

I don't think the age difference will be too significant as she has a fresh look about her. And Han Ga-In is 6 yrs older than Kim Soo-Hyun in Moon Embracing the Sun. And his baby face makes the age difference between them stand out a little more in my mind than the age difference with Yoochun and Han Ji Min. On another note: another Han Ji Min show - yeeeeaaaaa! I loved her in capital scandal, I loved her Cain and Able and I am loving her in Padam. She is my fav actress. ;D

Well I am looking forward to it. It sounds like a great premise and I'm looking forward to seeing YC in something that's more comedic. It's harder to do but I think with some of his idol experience, he can pull it off - and just in general improving his acting skills. I think he has awhile to go but as long as he's entertaining, I'll support it.
HJM - I have seen her in Capital Scandal, Yi San and PP. I liked her best in YS - but I feel like she played best that more demure, good girl - perfect for Joseon era and a love interest of a king. But her playing a cutesy, bubbly girl - not so much. Someone mentioned that she lacked that kind of natural spunk - me too - I felt that. That's why I couldn't fully get into her. But I think she is a decent actress with pretty nice roles under her belt. Maybe if she could channel some of that inner spunk & sass and have that naturally come out here - I think she'd be perfect for the role. Cause she can definitely jump from present to past easily.
YC and HJM - fighting!!!

Yoochun looked way too young for lee da hee in Ripley, hope they give him a more mature look in this.
I love Han ji min in Capital scandal and Yi san and Padam Padam. I just looove that drama in general, so intense. best of whats on at the moment. Jung woo sung as Kang chil is just fantastic and the bromance with kim bum......loving it.

Rooftop Prince sounds like a mash-up of 'Kate & Leopold' and 'Enchanted' - bring on the funny!
I've only seen HJM in Jewel in the Palace and now in Padam Padam where she's playing a conflicted sad-sack type, so as far as watching her play 'cute' - IDK. I just don't see her as cute, most likely because I equate 'cute' with being youthful and HJM skews older (and is) than Yoochun, height issues notwithstanding. It will all depend on the writing, as always.
Had to laugh at the 'she reminds me of..' comments up-thread. I find it totally distracting to watch her in Padam Padam because the first thing that hits me about her is her dead-on resemblance to Lee Hyori. To me, they could be twins - voice and looks (except Hyori has more in the boobs department).

But isn't JYJ on Tour during March? and the drama start shooting in March? Is Yoochun going to fly back and forth like JkS when he took time off of Love Rain to do his Tour?
I just hope he doesn't work tooo hard and get some rest. Juggling too much is stressful...

Popularity doesn't exactly equal acting credits or strengths or experience. Say Moon Chae Won is very popular now because of her recent dramas, but doesn't make her more experienced or better actress than her co-actress Hong So Hyun. Park Min Young is more popular than Moon Chae Won, but I think Moon Chae Won's acting is at upper level.
I don't know why people complain that Han Ji Min is not popular enough. It would sound better if were wishing him to work with more experienced actresses so he can learn from them. But popularity? Some who like Han Ji Min might think "Likewise." She'd acted with actors like Kim Jae Won, So Ji Sub, Jung Woo Sung, Lee Seo Jin, Kang Ji Hwan, Eric....and Yoo Chun is much behind in terms of experience and popularity in acting field. Han Ji Min herself is well known too, but maybe not with the younger generation that Yoo Chun's fans are in considering she's close reaching 30. The girl really does not look 29.
Likewise Yoo Chun is popular (I'd say more so in other fields), but his acting is not leveled with some with same popularity or even someone with much less popularity. Even if a drama has an unpopular cast it can still become very good quality and memorable. It takes much more than just popular casts to make a good drama. They just make the drama look more visible. If he weren't paired with Han Ji Min and it's a new actress and they do a good job and have great chemistry we'd like the drama very much still. Same as if Han Ji Min were to work with a new actor instead.
I'm positive about Han Ji min. Really liked her inside Jewel in the Palace and Yi San. I absolutely liked her inside Great Inheritance with Kim Jae Won. I loved Cain & Abel, but didn't like her character because it was such an unimportant female lead character (just my opinion.)
As for Yoo Chun, well...he's acted in a fushion Saejuk before, so should be ok. Since this is his 2nd drama and some say that the role is tailored for him I think he should do fine. He has the image that is easy to like. Just need a good script and production crew.
They can really do the whole noona-romance in this and it won't be weird even. Considering the princess has died and it's the prince who travels time to come see her reincarnated being. He could have came to the present and she happens to be older than him if they wish to do a noona-romance thing, or he happens to find her at the age she when she died.
And some talking about BuBuJingXin? I love that drama. It's the brightest star shining in CDramaland. Please let it guide the way to better CDramas of equal quality. Luckily this Prince will never have as hard time in modern world as Ruo Xi did in Qing days. Why not try Palace Lockheart would be more likely. I'm not mocking this drama, and those who watched the end would understand. lol I hope this drama turns out nice. With the fantasy element, usually it's a like or dislike for me, nothing in the middle. This premise is more stomach-able for me than swapping bodies.
I don't see a possibility for a happy ending. The prince can not stay in modern days or history would rewrite it self and he could not bring the princess' reincarnation back to the past to live with him. A prince traveling through time to get to his princess, it's hard to believe that it happened. In the end, could it be that it was all Han Ji Min's dream all along? Maybe she happened to encounter Yoo Chun someday ago and did not remember, but his face surfaced in this dream of hers? Just make them meet again afterwards, another chance encounter. Or maybe they would just through all logics and science out their mind and write this. lol
Sadly this is like my only anticipated Korean drama this year so far.
