Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

XD This is such an awesome idea!

Auugh *blushes* I hate to admit it, but I have to say Boys Over Flowers. It was also my very first K-drama, my curiosity/devotion to the drama/manga pulling me over from my J-drama cocoon (this is also what led to me discovering Dramabeans~ a random internet search on the show before watching led me to your Ep. 1 recap and you were bookmarked forever). I can also say, that without the additional info, snark, and sanity brought via your recaps I probably would have never bothered with following additional K-dramas. Yes, BOF was addictive crack, but it was incredibly stupid crack with a topping of a delicious Lee Min-ho. It took Coffee Prince to make me fall head-over-heels in love with K-dramas for good.

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary.

My first love K-drama is "Full House". One day I discovered a new cable Asian TV station. I saw the drama "Full House" from episode 4 with English subtitles. I didn't know any of the actors' names at first but I used the internet to help me. To say that I was gobsmacked by Rain is an understatement. Eventually, through the tv station's website, I discovered that Rain was a singer. The station had 3 of his music videos and I was lost to Rain completely. I was lost to K-dramas completely. I was lost to K-Pop completely. I discovered South Korea.

The one and only. Goong. That drama had me swooning over the great almighty Joo Ji Hoon and then sobbing over Kim Jung Hoon with his sorrowful puppy eyes. It was one heck of a drama, and I always always am up for my one-hundred-and-fifty-seventh time of watching it! :D

Mine was 'Palace.' I loved the sets and costumes, and I loved the unique idea of the plot--a modern-day Korean monarchy! I could hardly sleep waiting for the next episode... :) Since then, I've never looked back and I happily continue to feed my drama addiction! :)

Shining Inheritance is the one that brought me to this k-drama addiction. Before I'm contented watching (tagalized or Filipino language) k-drama airing in TV here in PH but when shining inheritance knock at my door I'm truly mesmerized with its beauty inside and out. I started to surf the WWW to find the episodes and OST. BTW along with my k-drama addiction is my mom that always asking the new episodes of k-drama we are watching and we are doing this for about 3 years (OMG, 3 years of k-drama marathon and still going strong). My 500 GB hard disk is full of k-dramas, OST and pix. Now I'm thinking to upgrade it to 1TB, hahahaha that alot of drama to download. :)

Happy Birthday Dramabeans! Hope this site will live happily ever after... :)

Hi and congratulations! Well done! ;)

My first drama was MNKSS but it was actually Gong Yoo with Coffee Prince in late 2007 who did it to me. After watching the first episode I thought 'there has to be someone talking/writing about this!' and voila... Dramabeans has been at the top of my favourite sites' list.

Thanks again for all the recaps, comments, opinions and laughs. And as I say to my son EXCELLENT JOB!

About a year and a half ago, "Winter Sonata".

The scenery was gorgeous, and the music soundtrack was haunting and heartbreaking. The symbolism of the snow, which normally means death, averted into the rekindling of a first love.

Me yelling at the screen, "What now?!??" when the next obstacle to their relationship reared it's ugly head.

The tears whenJoon Sang's last act as a seeing man was to commit her dream house to memory, so he could build it if he survived.

The final scene: back hug, backlit by the sun, sparkling water and palm trees. Sigh.

Boys Before Flowers brought me over to the dark side at the end of ninth grade! I was at a study party the night before a huge biology test and two of my friends told me to watch the first episode. I had never been exposed to anything Korean before and I was totally hating on Gu Jun Pyo the first episode. xD Before I knew it, it was 4 AM and I hadn't done any studying. I finished the drama in 3 days and I've been in the dark side for the past four years. <3

This is kinda hard to remember, but I think it might have been Goong. I got really obsessed with kdramas back in 2005, but I remember growing up and watching kdramas here and there with my dad. I didn't have too much interest in them till Goong though. Then I saw My Girl and My Delightful Girl Choonhyang and those were totally my gateway drugs -ahem- I mean dramas... gateway dramas.

I stumbled upon My Name Is Kim Sam Soon on local TV many years ago and the potty humor and cute leads had me hooked. I was taping episodes on my VCR (yep, this was a long time ago) when I knew I was going to miss an episode. I found Dramabeans when Coffee Prince started airing. Thank you for this site and the smart writing. Congrats!

I just needed a break, and that break turned into a lifelong love!

My first love? God, this is hard. I've been watching kdramas since I was little. My mother would rent them from the korean market and I'll watch with her and my grandmother. The kdrama I remember the most clearly is Wedding Dress (1997). It was the first time seeing Kim Min Jong and I fell in love with him. I also started to crush on Shin Hyun Joon. I have such a big heart for a little kid. lol.

My Drama First Love was probably Goong, although it's hard to pinpoint when I became sucked into this world. I remember watching Dae Jang Geum with my family since my mom had it constantly playing on the television, but Goong was one of the first Korean dramas I watched on my own. It eventually led me to Coffee Prince, which I'll always love :)

my first drama was Model staring Jang Dong Gun in 1997 but the ones that glued me to Kdrama were the The last game (1994- also with Jang Dong Gun) and Wish upon a star 1997 with Choil Jin Sil and An Jae Wook. Another unforgetable one was Medical brothers.
Indeed, this question make me want to watch those dramas once again.

My first drama that let me pass to the dark side was "Full House". Actually my favorite and the one that make me into Kdrama was "Alone in Love". What a masterpiece!!! But Full House was the first one that tied me in front my laptop one Sunday in 2009. For 18 hours straight I watched all series! without a break! It was my first "Marathon" day...but not the last for sure!!!!

What really got me obessive to Korean dramas was 'Stairway to Heaven'. Kwon Sang Woo was a great actor with a sexy face. If it weren't for Stairway to Heaven, I wouldn't even be this obsessive with Korean movies! ;)

Haha, Personal Taste was the first drama I really loved and I bought the DVD because I loved it so much. Looking back it isn't such a great drama but I still have a big ol soft spot for it. :D

Congratulations Dramabeans!!!!
wish you all the best for the year ahead...

My drama first love was Autumn in My Heart/ Autumn Tale with Song he gyo, Song seung heun and Won bin.
A tear jerker story that made me and my mom (who rarely watched TV) always tuned up in front of TV and took over the TV remote control from my dad and my brother. I never forget the story and I even watched it on the re-run broadcast.

My very first drama was "all about eve". I was freshly graduate and went to Paris to work for my first job. I was on internet looking around for some chinese drama to download for my mom. I have never heard about Korean dramas before and my mom neither. We were at this period were everything could be download via bittorent. with my slowy internet connection and my primary understanding of bittoring, i was surfing on every forums and I found this forum created by Shirley (I can t simply thank her cos she was the first one who got me hook to forums and korean dramas. she taught me everything without knowing and her forum linked me to others and like a snow ball I didn t notice that I enter in the Kdrama world. huh, that freaking me out if I think about it.Sooo twilight zone!). Shirley uploaded a drama called all about eve with this perfect guy with a perfect look with so much kindness and romantism "The Man". my first crush. Jang Dong Gun! who could resist to this man! not the heroin anyway. she was perfect too and there was this perfect bad girl. everything was perfect! so each week I was waiting to watch one episode of this perfect drama (imagine one episode took me one week to download. a hell!)
and now with the new technology and the xtra high speed, I can watch 10 episodes per day without sleeping. wouah i have just realized that i passed ten years watching dramas. time flies! me going to cry! welcome to 2012!

Happy 5th Anniversary!

Lovers in Paris is my drama first love. I watched it in 2007. Three years after it first aired and it was also the year that I stumbled to this wonderful website.

Here's a toast to many more years to come! *clink glasses*

I'm probably the only person who feels this way, but it was Alone in Love. It was heart-wrenching and sad and I was blown away by it. It was understated, and I think to this day it is still in my top 3.

You're Beautiful

Have always had this weird thing for gender benders. I was watching the Japanese version to learn some Japanese for my Japanese class and my friends recommended (strongly!) the Korean version. When I couldn't wait for the Japanese episodes to finally come out, I gave in and peeked ahead in the Korean version. In fact, I didn't even watch them. I found your site and fell in love. Thank you so much! :)

And happy anniversary!

Happy Big 5 Dramabeans!!!

Aww, like so many my first drama love was Coffee Prince (such a ladykiller). It was also the one that led me to this wonderful site. I'm ashamed to say this, but I used to be one of those people who thought all kdramas were melodramas filled with fauxcest, birth secrets, terminal illnesses, and lots of angry screaming without having actually watched a full drama.... and I'm so glad to be proven wrong.

Our love story started with me being somewhat melodramatic in real life and in need of a some light entertainment to lift me from my stupor. TV is the answer to the universe's question. Prior to converting to kdramas, I had been raised on TVB dramas and was getting increasingly disappointed with their productions. So I stumbled upon mysoju.com and was just browsing through their blurbs for dramas and the story for Coffee Prince had caught my eye. I've always been a sucker for gender benders, so I gave it a shot, and the rest as they say was history.

The first ever K-Drama I watched was Full House years ago. The same drama pulled me family, and almost every other friends I have into K-Drama-Love (Gotta love Song Hye-Gyo :D). Surprising really, since the constant bickering did tire us ALL. Then, Sassy Girl Chun Hyang came along, and we've been following K-Dramas ever since.

tbh.. I can't remember which exact K-Drama brought me to Dramabeans. It was around my 2nd year in university tho (2008) xD

ps: Happi Birthday Dramabeans!

pps: Happi New Year 2012 too! :D

It was jdrama that first got me into drama, the first one I ever watched was Densha Otoko, which I liked, but it was the second I watched, around 5 years ago, Nodame Cantabile that really got me addicted.

I watched the first episode of Full House two years and many jdramas after, and funny enough, I liked it so little I decided kdrama was not for me.

However, after watching the japanese adaptation, I decided to watch The Devil. I loved it! Every minute, every bit! I thought maybe I had been wrong thinking kdrama wasn't for me. And that was the real beginning! Many kdramas after, and having been learning Korean for two months, I'm so grateful The Devil came to the rescue ^^

My drama first love was My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, or, as I knew it then, My Lovely Samsoon. It was completely random. I was bored at home, flipping lazily through the now-deceased AZN channel. Suddenly, some crazy lady was screaming about her hair being caught on some hot guy's jacket button. I watched with interest for five minutes... and ended up for the next few weeks watching it at midnight every night. Completely, and utterly, unhealthy, but yup, that was my foray.

Then I began searching up NGs on youtube, watching recommended k-romcoms like My Girl, Goong... Before I knew it, I was hooked on kdramas, and on dramabeans (which I forget how I found, though). Now that I looked back, I was pretty damn lucky my first love was such an outstanding drama, else I would've forsworn kdramas forever.
