Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

AUTUMN IN MY HEART omgosh, I feel like an old'un. Compared to dramas nowadays, this drama can look like a total mess of overused cliches, with the siblings reversal, dying sickness, and one-dimensional second-lead bitch, but this drama deserves praise and commemoration for helping the Hallyu Wave grow. Won Bin had me wrapped around his pretty little finger like he did with so many other woman viewers, and Jun Soo's love for Eun Soo made all of us wish we had a boyfriend like him.
And Moon Guen Young, HOW HAVE YOU GROWN. eeeee she's a beautiful example of a child-star grown up right!

Mine was Boys Over Flowers, like many, though surprisingly it was not Lee Min Ho that won me over...rather the secondary romance between Kim Bum and Kim So Eun. They had the best chemistry on the show. My addiction began to watch episodes merely for them, my interest actually started growing for the rest of the show and I found myself rewatching episodes all the time! Though, I must say the soundtrack became rather obnoxious by episode 5.
Congrats!

I was a Jdorama addict before I saw my first Korean show, but they quickly won me over. The first one I remember falling head over heels for was 'Tree of Heaven' with Lee Wan and Park Shin Hye. Looking back I wince a bit at the overdramatic-ness and cliched plotlines of it all, but at the time I was addicted and it was the first time I was introduced to a hint of high-emotion makjang. Still holds a place in my heart though!

Congratulations Dramabeans! Thank you for the great recaps!
What really sealed the deal for me was Coffee Prince. To be honest, you couldn't pay me before to watch a drama.
Coffee Prince was the first time I watched a drama from 8am on a Sunday all the way to 6am on a Monday. I went to work without sleep. I felt like my body and my mind were not quite connected but hey, I felt really, really good. Does it should like I'm on drugs?
Well, its been like that ever since. I don't like all kdramas and mind you I still won't watch dramas that's depressing (lets not count Winter Sonata because Bae Yoon Jun was there I really didn't need any plot to enjoy the view) but its been a great source of downtime and entertainment for me.

My Lovely Kim Sam Soon
this was one the first asian drama that was broadcast in my country and it made me drama addicted. This drama has the right balance of comedy, drama and romance.Honestly, the ending is not really a fairy tale happy ever after ending but is a realistic one yet still a happy one. To summarize, I really enjoyed this because it is grounded in reality.

I moved to Korea last March to teach English. When I asked why was once of my six year old boys wearing a blue sequinned track suit I was told to watch the drama 'Secret Garden'. I did.
Eight months later and I have now watched more dramas than most of my Korean friends! ;) AND it also earns me bonus points for my Korean pronunciation! Winning!!

I've been watching dramas for years before I found my first drama love. And surprise surprise! It's You're Beautiful.
Drama watching has never been the same after YAB. Oh my, I remember camping at YAB soompi forum for updates and news. I check/refresh your site every minute hoping that the recap was already up.
My love for YAB was crazy. It turned me into a crazy fan lol!

The very first drama that I fell in love with would be Hana Yori Dango which is to this day, my favourite drama. The acting, the music, the story -- all of it made this drama one that I close to my heart. It caused me to watch more Jdramas which led to Taiwanese dramas and eventually, I found myself watching Kdramas.

My first drama that drove me to Kdramaland is All About Eve about 10 years ago. I curse Yoon Mi, I adore Sun Mi, no.. wait. Because it was dubbed in Chinesse, their name is Yin Mei and Sia mei.
And after that, my prince charming has a face. It's Jang Dong Gun, my first and forever crush.
Even after I got married and he got married too. That's a real life.
But In K drama land, I'm still a girl with a heart belongs to him. :)

Back in 2001, when a friend of mine told me that she loved "All About Eve" and she dreamt of the male lead actor almost every night, I laughed at her so hard and kept telling her she was so crazy, little I knew that I was and still am hundred times more crazier than her. "All About Eve" was my first Korean drama and I felt in love with it uncontrollably. I can't remember how many times I watched it... (8 times probably). Jang Dong Gun's character was the most perfect man ever on earth. Even though until now I have watched a lot of dramas which are better than AAE, but it will forever have a special place in my heart and JDG will forever be my biggest Korean crush. :D

I've watched a lot of dramas through my years but the first drama that had me addicted, and actually gotten me to search for more, was the 2009 Taiwanese drama Autumn's Concerto, also known as, Next Stop, Happiness!
It was a romance drama, with a dash of humor, pinch of cuteness and an eye candy lawyer. The lovely soundtrack was used perfectly, coming in at the right time.
The actors and actresses were great to watch. After watching the drama I just had to find more, and thus broaden my horizons to the KDramas. It's a drama I come back and marathon through when there is nothing peaking my interest.

My first drama was full house then coffee prince. I was watching full house and coffee prince at the same time but finished full house first because I wanted to see the homewreker put in her place. I know call the thing when the person never shows up when they said they are going to the full house effect. I finish both dramas in just 2 days, that when I knew I was addicted that and when I started to try drawing pictures in my tea because I wasn't allowed to drink coffee.

Yay! What a fun anniversary celebration! While BBF was my very first K-drama (I myself am just days away from my own one year anniversary of finding BBF on Hulu!), my first K drama love has to be the first drama I experienced watching as it aired, which was 49 Days. Kang-AAAAAAAHHH! It was funny, sweet, a little nutty (what with the inappropriate-medical-info-sharing doc and the exorcist), and it had Jung Il Woo. Sold!
I also have to thank this site for contributing to my love, as I wouldn't have been half as obsessed if I couldn't read the recaps and the comments along with watching the episodes. Thanks again, JB, GF, and all the other fantastic people here at DB!

turning 19 in a few months and if u ask me what i've done with most of my life since i was 12 it would be watching kdramas ahhh the story of me and my love or as my friends call it my obsession/addiction to kdramas and eventually all things Asian began with Full house having been in a country with limited internet access i could not watch this show online! i remember sitting waiting for the tv station to broadcast Full house, i had watched All In and Hotelier prior to Full House but somehow i was more drawn to Full house my reason being "Rain" i fell in love with this guy then a few years later approx 4yrs ago we moved to the US, i discovered Youtube and i thought my life was complete then i went on to discover other sites like dramafever and then my life changed on one hand for the worst, not getting enough sleep, spending homework time watching dramas, on the other hand for the better!, meeting new great friends in school who shared my love of kdramas and kpop and learning Korean and Chinese! i'm bilingual but because of kdramas i'm almost fluent in 2more languages(Korean and Mandarin-Chinese) because of kdramas and twdramas, i can now understand korean and chinese speak a bit of both and write! i could go on and on about the bazillion dramas i've watched and what they've made me do including even starting a club about kpop and dramas at my university! but then my post would be wayyyy long that it already is haha Happy Five Year Anniversay! p.s YUSS five is my lucky number! :D

Even with Dae Jang Geum my mom had to explain what was going on most of the time. But the food and the story definitely got me hooked.

5years this month?! Cool! Well down ladies!!
Now to answer your question.. The first kdrama i was really interested in was Lovers in Paris. Some of you may say, dang that sucked but Kim Jung Eun's character was fresh and funny, quirky and memorable. That made me love her to death. But the kdrama that totally sucked into the dark side (kdramaworld and dramabeans heh!) would be Coffee Prince. That show made me crazy inlove with the characters and the story. How Gong Yoo's playboy character got tormented by the love grown by Yoon Eun Hye's street smart personality. I love the concept and how realistic the drama could be. It explored the idea of gender stereotype and made us see, feel and understand that love can strike us in the most unexpected way and we cant do anything 'bout it except to give. The ending sucks though (too cliched imo) but the drama's got the most memorable dramatic scene for me (minus the dialogues ha! beat that!). The beach scene was the most heartbreaking, gut-wretching, knockout highlight out there topped with a great soundtrack. I love it so much i sometimes replay it in my mind. There you go, i got it all out. From there, i was totally converted. Instead of watching american series, i would opt for kdramas where i could laugh, cry, be in love, get ansty, be horrified, get embarassed and have my adrenalines pumping all at the same time. As for the year 2012, i would catch up on my kdrama watching and be on top of it. Lol

Amazing how our kdrama experiences are so parallel. I feel exactly the same way about Lovers in Paris. And you have verbalized exactly my feelings about Coffee Prince. I also replay that heart-wrenching beach scene in my mind. I was likewise disappointed with the ending.
Both dramas hold a special place in my heart.

I was about eight or nine years old when I went on my first trip to China. There, I was able to watch Full House subbed in Chinese. Everyday there would be two or three episodes reruns repeating over and over again. Each day I would turn on the same channel and watch the same episode, hoping and praying that I would be able to stay in China for long enough to see the end of the drama. I never got to see the rest of it until I got back home, researched the drama and finally satisfied my addition. It's been nine years and I still hooked on dramas. >.<

To my eternal shame; Boys Over Flowers.
In my defense, I knew the entire time I was crazy over it that it was a ridiculous over-hysterical mess, but I've only ever really watched sci-fi shows and the like as far as tv goes, and those are almost all episodic. To have something DESIGNED to make you tear your hair out at the end of each episode was potent crack to my nonsensitive brain and I was hooked.
I also found the whole-hearted absurdity of it kind of heart-warming.

Autumn Tale definitely was the beginning of my addiction , what can I say Moon Geun Young's wonderful acting and Seung Song Hun and Won Bin's general gorgeousness sold (definitely was 2nd lead shipping ). I think I finished it in a matter of days during the summer. Also in my search for the drama I found sites that only fueled my drama watching which was great since I didn't have cable during my college days.
But if I were to say what was the first drama I absolutely fell in love with, the first drama I marathoned, then definitely Goong. I kid you not I watched that entire drama in one night durong vacation from school. I started watching it and before I knew it, it was 8am the next day when I finished.

Ok i never win at these things... but i said hey it's a new year let's try new things! right? so the first drama i watched was boys over flowers, i don't remember why i decided to watch a korean drama (since i'm not korean) but i started watching episode 1 and i just couldn't stop, i think i was in episode 5 or 6 when my sister told me to get off the computer because she needed to do homework and had been waiting because she thought i was doing homework she was so pissed when she saw i was watching something and not doing homework...:p
i think i liked boys over flowers because Jan di was so brave and hard working and she sort of helped me deal with things i was going through at the time, one of which was my first job, cleaning tables at a restaurant and that wasn't fun at all!
Right now i prefer lighter dramas like Flower boy ramyun shop! which i'm currently watching and looove!
