Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Full House. I even remember I had the tv on randomly and it was on the specific scene where he was in the theme park (trying to stalk her?) with the lion mask on. It was hilarious so i started following it everyday on tv. Before that Ive watched Autumn in my Heart, didnt like it at all. Developed the (misleading) impression that ALL kdramas are sad and melodramatic and avoided it like the plague. But then Full House, Gong, and My Girl came along.

My first K-drama was "Successful Story of a Bright Girl" with Jang Na-Ra and Jang Hyuk. But I didn't become obsessive until I saw Kim Jae Won in "My Love Patzzi". Seriously, I have a tremendous love for both Kim Jae Won and Jang Na-Ra. I still say to my friends that 'Jae-Wonnie' is my husband. Haha... I also believe that besides me, KJW only belongs with JNR.

The 1st Shop: Coffee Prince! Who could ever forget the agony Gong Yoo was going through, when he was debating whether or not to give up on his "manhood" so to speak and take a dip in the dark side :) I loved how he played the character with such ease, despite having to act like a half-crazed, confused, conflict driven man. This was the drama that had me hook, line and sinker. It gave me the opportunity to fall in love with Yun Eun Hye and Gong Yoo and all those princes :) Also an actual (not-so proper) Korean kiss... sigh

"come to the dark side, we have korean dramas~"
my first love was autumn in my heart or autumn love story (some call it autumn fairytale though I beg to differ. the tragic ending of this drama is not so much of a happily ever after. but what's a korean drama without the heart-wrenching moments that come with?)
I was in fifth grade at that time, the bland school days gone by were incomparable to the drama life i was living at home~
to this day, I can watch the drama all over again, episodes 1-16. and I am still holding on to the belief that true love exists.
[and the musical score is compelling beyond words]

My first drama was Which Star Are You From starring Kim Rae Won and Jung Ryu Won. I randomly caught it on tv one time while on vacation in the Philippines with my cousins. It was dubbed in tagalog and I couldn't really understand what they were saying. However, I was hooked on the storyline and the actors. I became addicted after it. I would find myself waiting eagerly each day for it to broadcast and to listen to my cousin's translation. After the drama was finished I searched for more and the rest is history.

My very first drama love was City Hunter. I read the blurb on Netflix and it looked boring. But then my best friend bullied me into watching this show because Kdrama is awesome. I said okay, and City Hunter is awesome. And I also found my first celebratory crush, Lee Min Ho!

Indeed, Dramabeans is the one feeding our kdrama addiction. We have become all crazed. And no one's complaining.

Happy Anniversary!
My first kdrama ever was Autumn in My Heart dubbed in Chinese. But it was Gong that brought me over to the dark side. I loved Yoon Eun Hye and the whole constitutional monarchy scenario. It'd be pretty cool if that actually existed in modern Korea.

My Drama First Love would actually have to be the Taiwanese drama It Started With a Kiss. The plot of girl going after dream boy is so easy to relate to, and the actress, Ariel Lin, did such a convincing job...of that and of being beyond incompetent at life that it's cringingly hilarious. It also helps a lot that the guy (I forget the actor's name, Joe something?) is so pretty. Sigh.
Kdrama First Love? It'd actually have to be Alone in Love. I think I actually "watched" (skimmed a couple episodes here and there of random dramas) a couple dramas before that, but Alone in Love was the first kdrama that showed me that Korean dramas can be high quality, too, and restored enough faith in me to give other kdramas a better chance. (Before that, the only drama I watched in its entirety was Full House, which unlike other viewers here, made me upset and vowed never to watch kdramas again if all of them were going to end with a not-even-a-peck as the ending kiss...)

The first kdrama I ever stumbled upon was Green Rose. It's still one of my favorite melodramas to this day. That, and Go Soo now holds a special place in my heart. ;~;
Even though I liked Green Rose, it wasnt until Delightful Girl, Choon-Hyang that kicked me out of reality and straight into the world of Korean dramas. I never looked back again. DGCH had me bawling for entire episodes, with fits of laughter between tears.

BEAUTIFUL DAYS!
That was the first k-drama that I ever watched and the obsession has continued until this day. It brought me to some of my favorite actors today like Lee Byung-Hun and Shin Min-A :)!
I was totally hooked through it all... aggressive male lead, terminal illness, brothers fighting for the same love, bring on all the cliches that we love! I even remember obsessing over the OST for awhile (And it hasn't changed much since then hehe.)
Congratulations! and Happy 5-Years Dramabeans!!

Well... where to start? I'm definitely starting to watch k-drama since the Endless Love's era, and I still remember how and why exactly Jan Dong Gun made my youthful day all shimmering just by watched him smiling at Chae Rim in All About Eve. And then I begun to have a fantasy of how cool its gonna be to work at the hotel just like in Hotelier.. See? k-dramas always bring a randomness in me, LOL!
But what makes me totally addicted to all about k-dramas and not only the show is gonna be Princess Hours, Coffee Prince and Full House (yeahh I know.. its still a list, but blame the k-drama's world, I'm just enjoying it with all my heart! hahahahh....)
Anyway... does this list making me sounds as old as an ahjumma?? Cause FYI I start to watch k-drama since I'm in elementary school. I don't know how it happened, maybe because all the cartoon in cartoon networks couldn't provide my need in a romance-quirky-adorable-way like k-drama does. Or maybe I'm just too fast to leave my childhood :p

My first Korean drama was Autumn in my Heart- on VCD no less, and with Chinese subs! This was in high school, so I was all about true love and melodrama and the pretty (Won Bin!) I was used to Mexican and Filipino soap operas that ran for months, so this idea that a drama could be 16 episodes long and still be pretty darn satisfying was just so ingenious, it blew my 15 year old mind. I spent days and nights watching every kdrama I could get my hands on after that, crappy subtitles be damned, and eventually stumbled upon Sassy Girl Chunhyang which cemented my love for kdrama and k-everything.

My first kdrama was Dream High.
I stumbled upon it after watching a fanvid on youtube and then searched teh interwebz until I found a version of the series with English subtitles. And then I watched. And watched. And watched just that little bit more, because if I didn't, how would I find out if Hye-Mi ever became a real girl? If Baek-Hee would redeem herself? What the deal was with Jin-Guk's father? If Sam-Dong would get his moment to shine? If Pil-Suk would ever get Jason to admit his feelings for her? And who in the (Dream High) world was K? So many questions!
And that's how it started. :)

My first k-drama love was Full House, which formula has been copied a million times since.
I found out about the drama through a friend of mine in freshman year of college, and I think the poor girl/rich guy scheme just resonated with me. I even bought the DVD collection a few years later.
I've tried to watch the show again, but I think some of the things that have been tired out from repetition from other drama (ignorant girl, bad boy, etc.) has dampened how I view Full House. But to this day I definitely cannot hate Full House and I'm grateful for it's existence.
Happy Fifth Anniversary, Dramabeans!

It was Meteor Garden TW version. Year 2002. This TW hit series was shown in a local channel dubbed in Filipino language. I remember it was on a 4:30 timeslot. What I did was moved my afternoon tea break to 4:30pm (originally 3:30) and standby in the cafeteria where there is a TV that’s installed near the ceiling. Imagine the pain in the neck literally! But I was dissatisfied. VCD pack back then was very pricey (because it was a hit!) and I’m broke. So I convinced my Chinese friend to buy a VCD of the series. I told him (oh yes! my friend is male) that it’s a good one! After he watched it, I borrowed the vcd! Hahaha! It’s really different (in a good way) to hear their own voices! Since then I never ever watch dubbed series and my love for asian dramas started. I used to watch them in a small TV so it will be easy to watch and read subs at the same time. But now, now? Play it on a 47” and I won’t complain!

My first kdrama love was last year. Playful Kiss. It may have been super flawed but it was what introduced me to the kdrama world. I remember searching on hulu for something enteresting to watch and happened to see it. To tell the truth I didnt know it was in Korean. After one ep I was hooked. Playful Kiss got me into Coffee Prince and BOF even the Japanese version. I watch so many Mainland, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Korean dramas and movies I think im beyond addicted. My ipod is even filled with so much kpop it doesnt make any sense. I spent my senior year in the computer lab watching dramas or reading recaps when I didnt have time to watch. Playful Kiss isnt the best drama but without it I would be missing out on something amazing.

it would be Autumn in my heart :) it was the first ever korean drama i've watched and i fell in love with it. crying seems to be my thing you know hahaha. it also helps that the lead characters are very pretty people, from the leads to the second leads and most importantly the young ones... also, it being a different culture and story from what i have been used to in our local dramas, brought me to the dark side and wanted more of such good dramas. Also, Reason, their ost always warms my heart... its instrumental is just perfect. This may not be my current favorite now since i have been watching A LOT of dramas over the past years but this drama will always be special to me because this is and will always be my first LOVED KDRAMA ;)

Kdrama First Love that converted me to the dark side was Personal Taste. It was on a list of top k,j, and t dramas. I had just finished the Hana Yori Dango Series in Japanese and unfortunately compared it with BOF and therefore couldn't finish watching it after episode 1..so I scrolled down alittle and there was personal taste and I loved it! As an actress in the states it had amazing acting, coherence, and character dynamics and thus a new love was born:))) Thanks for all the hardwork JB & GF. Happy New Year everyone!

I wasn't actually won over by a drama, but rather by a korean idol movie. One of my friend's little sisters was really into all things 'asian' and so we randomly decided to join her in watching super juniors, 'attack of the pin-up boys'. At first I thought it was just a stupid concept for a movie, then I really got into the hilarity of it all. What really got me hooked though, was when they singing and dance to Wonder Boy at the end. I wasn't told that they were a group, let alone that there were 13 in the group! My friend telling me that all the people dancing (the hundred or so of them) were in a group freaked me out! :P But once everything was clarified, I gained a lot of interest in super junior, which stemmed into a HUGE interest in KPOP, korean movies, and most importantly, dramas. Not just Korean, but Taiwanese, Japanese, Thai, all over. Just one movie completely changed my outlook on music, television, and everything in my life....I still can't believe it.

Mine is Goong / Princess Hours.
When it aired in a local station (it was dubbed!), I was on my penultimate term in the university and was renting a small room nearby. It was subleased by an old lady and her grandchildren. I didn't have a TV in my room, and I don't usually talk to my land lady so it was totally awkward to ask them for the first time if I could use their TV to watch a show every weeknight. Of course, I made them like Goong so that I may get to see it every night without being bothered by the feeling that I just "socialized" with them just because of it! And yeah, I even cut my hair like Yul's.
