Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Boys Over Flowers was my gateway drug. It was the perfect transition to the K-drama world for a recovering(?) anime/manga addict like me since it's based on one of my favorite manga. Throw in that catchy--if not somewhat repetitive--K-Pop soundtrack, and I was a goner! :)

Congrats on your 5th year! Thank you for all the constant updates and recaps! You ladies ROCK! :D

Anyways my first drama love would be Autumn in my Heart which I watched when I was 12 (wow I'll be 23 this year so I've literally loved dramas for half my life haha) It's a drama that will always rank high in my favourite list. I loved everything about it from the music to the pretty autumn backdrop and then to the extremely gorgeous cast.

My first drama that I fell in love with was Stairway to Heaven(2003). I saw this when i was in fifth...maybe even fourth grade (I'm 17 now).

It was soo....Kdrama with the love triangles, cancer, another love triangle, evil sister, the works. It was my first so automatically, I was hooked!

I remember watching it twice Vietnamese dubbed (I'm Viet) and once Chinese dubbed (...no comment...) and it was literally the best thing I've ever seen.

My views on this drama has changed. There were so many flaws. I don't see why they forced the guy to marry that witch. They're not even his son....and WHY the heck did the main girl DIE even though her brother committed suicide to give her his eyes. That was such a waste of a good three hours.

Though very flawed, I admit wholeheartedly that this was the drama that pulled me to the "dark side".

My 1st Kdrama was Glass Shoes, starring Kim Hyun Joo, Kim Ji Ho, So Ji Sub and Han Jae Suk. I remember that I had watched it on good ol' VHS tapes, dubbed in Vietnamese. Although the sound/picture quality were pretty bad, I still watched it nonstop over a few days, and loved So Ji sub's character!! :D And of course, I cried loads at the end.... But Glass Shoes was definitely the drama that introduced me to the world of Korean entertainment and I've never left since! :)

Dramabeans rocks! :) Thanks for the amazing giveaway and all the amazing articles over the last 5 years!

To answer JB and GF's question, and of course to try to win the price, "Autumn in my heart (and Song Hye Kyo!)" was my first k-drama love. I know it's a bit cheesy but...

Boys Over Flowers got me hooked on Kroean Drama. My teenage daughter would watch it and I got curious. I didn't stop watching dramas since then. Lately though, I can't seem to find one that would make me stay up till wee hours of the morning. Any recommendations?
Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary! I always go to your website for your recaps and for the latest news in the KDrama world.
Cheers!!!

Happy New Year and congratulations of your 5th birthday, Dramabeans! My real birthday happens to land on the last Sunday of this month. ;)

The first drama that stole my soul was Goong: Princess Hours. Oh man, was that a party. Yoon Eun-hye was such a sweety. And I've always had an interest in different cultures, so it was a treat for me in that sense. Loved it, and it was only the beginning of a wonderful adventure through Kdramaland.

Congrats on the 5th anniversary!! I'm more of a recent fan of kdramas and it all started with "You're Beautiful"!

Although I've seen older dramas, my very very first being "Autumn Tale" but I've only started really enjoying kdramas about a year ago. Before that I was more into Jdramas but now I'm fully emerged into the world of kdramas.

I found myself checking your site more and more and in turn it fueled my kdrama obsession :p. Thank you for the site and hoping for many more anniversaries to come!! Cheers!

Congratz on 5 years! That's amazing! :]

My first drama that brought me over would have to be You're Beautiful. Oddly enough, this was recommended by my friend, who didn't want to have anything to do with dramas, kpop, etc. We watched it together, laughed together, cried together, and obsessed over it together. I was in middle school back then, and just staying up till 2AM watching it on my ipod was exhilarating and an entirely new world for me.

Delightful girl Chun Hyang was my first drama, but I fell head over heels in love with My girlfriend's a gumiho and their Woongstatic characters! I think the plot and the storyline really captured my soul!

Definitely 1st Shop of the Coffee Prince, like many others! I'm pretty sure all the adrenaline and caffeine rushing through my body as I watched it wasn't good for me as, as I was a first-year college student! I made it into a kind of drinking game, but for coffee instead of liquor. Every time they made/showed coffee, I drank some. Ahhh, good times. . .

My First Drama Love has always been My Girl. Everything just made me fall in love... the cast, the story, the way things were going... It was absolutely astonishing! It was the first time I actually liked the female lead, because, sometimes the female lead actually gets outshined by the guys the only thing you'll remember after the drama is how this guy is so hot and stuff but Yoo Rin was different. She left an impression: she was strong and she won't back down. She is the reason why I was sold to this show. It didn't just float my boat. It drove me into the ocean.

So yeah. What the hell am I talking about.

MY GIRL FTW.

The 1st drama that I watched and it's my favorite is You're Beautiful. The first time my friend told me about Kdramas, I had no interest....AT ALL since I was mostly into Jpop at that time....though when I went to her house, we watched a Kdrama which was 'You're Beautiful' and because my other friend talked about it, I decided to watch it...the beginning was 'meh' to me but then I decided to keep watching it...after I watched about 2 episodes of it, I had to go home since it was getting late and decided to watch the drama at my house...when I was watching it, I was too concentrated that I ate my dinner fast so I could continue watching it and took a shower early...I kept watching it until 2 AM and since it was getting late, I had to go to sleep...I left up to episode 5 and it was totally cliff hanged that when I slept, I couldn't even sleep and wanted the next day to come fast. I kept thinking on what was going to happen next and thought it wasn't a good idea to stay on that episode, but when I woke up, I immediately open the computer and kept watching which then it just kept getting interesting more and more...since it was the 1st Kdrama I watched, it was addicting and I finished watching it for 2 days and watched it non-stop. After that drama, I asked my friend to recommend me some other dramas to watch in which she did...other dramas I've watched, You're Beautiful is still my favorite drama. Because of You're Beautiful, I started to get interested in Kdrama..not only Kdrama, I also got interested in Kpop songs in which has took over my heart and I started to get less interested in Jpop....Kpop has just made my life interesting....because of You're Beautiful, I started to get interested more in Korea culture and music and other stuffs.

The drama that brought me to the dark side was I'm sorry, I love you!!
Then, my ex-BF just returned from Malaysia and brought it with him. I remember i was so exited for his return! but after he showed me the Cd's and watched the first ep together I got so into the drama that I forgot he was there! that night I stayed up doing an I'm sorry I love marathon. By ep 16 I had exterminated 2 klinex pack, my eyes were swollen from crying and nothing mattered to me more than finishing the drama. And during the last 20 minutes I realized the drama is gonna be over in no time! and as all know the double death scene was coming up...I cried like I've never cried before! and after it ended i continued sobbing for 2 hours :p
thats how I became a drama addict and that was the best present that jerk gave me :D

for me, it all started with Meteor Garden and onto other various Taiwanese dramas (Devil Beside You, It Started with a Kiss) until I was finally in full force kdrama mode. Then the nightmare began...by that, i mean marathoning through a series in three days, forgetting to eat, sleep and even shower! That of course lead to falling grades in school and then when college came, it was easier to slack off! Ditching classes because lack of sleep :[ Who the heck knew watching kdramas can lead to ...hardcore behaviors...hehehe

I'd have to say it was You're Beautiful as well! My mom was always hooked onto K-drama and I thought it was really cheezy at first because it always had to do with cancer =.= (or at least someone dying --- she was continuously watching Stairway to Heaven BTW) and then one day she was watching You're Beautiful and to my surprise it was something fun and something that was actually closer to my age!! At first JGS killed me with the eyeliner... who would've thought I'd be watching ever single drama of his after that!!

Oh and I must admit You're Beautiful is also why I got hooked onto K-pop. Jeremy was just so adorable and his voice is sooo amazing....!! My ipod has switched from TW-pop to K-pop since!!

Dear Javabeans and Girlfriday,

Happy 5th Anniversary! It's good to see so many k-drama fans and Dramabeans followers.

The first drama to officially bring me over to the dark side was My Lovely Samsoon. I had never seen a Korean drama before--but it stands out in my mind as the first.

The scene that still stands out in my mind....Continues to be the scene where Samsoon goes to Hyun Jin Heon's house to pick up her bike and he drives her back. Then, he receives a call from Yoo Hee Jin in the car and they fight about it.

I've always admired Samoon's direct personality. She wants to know if Hyun Jin Heon really likes her. His response is to leave her, and then come back and kick her bike over. That moment is priceless, and it speaks to all the reasons he can't or won't be direct with her.

I've watched several Korean dramas since then, but My Lovely Samsoon remains the standard for comparison.

Take Care,

Poetry_Lyric

I started off with JDramas and somehow ended up in the Kdrama world. I think my first kdrama was coffee prince. At least that was the one that left the biggest impression for me. I loved the characters and the story line plus Gong Yoo will always be one of my favorite actors. For the most part it was a fun drama that was easy for me to understand as a young teenager.

The first drama I ever watched was actually You're Beautiful! A ton of my friends were super into dramas but I never saw the appeal until they forced me to watch You're Beautiful. I was hooked! (It was also the first of many dramas to come in which I found myself more interested in the secondary love interest.) Since then, I'm glad I took the jump to the ~dark side~ of course, I can't believe I didn't see the appeal before!

For me, it started end of 2005 when my parents & I were trying to find something interesting to watch on tv and came across a kdrama which I later found out was called Winter Sonata. We started watching it from ep5 or 6 and just fell in love with it. It is because of this drama that now I’m a huge fan of kdramas. And in 6 years I think I’ve watched more than 100 Korean dramas.

Coffee Prince!!! I watched that drama in 2007 and became an addict. Bought suitcases full of DVD box sets from Singapore to the US in 2008. I still haven't watched some of them since the internet became the medium of choice. Now 4 years and two kids later, I still spend my precious few hours watching dramas than catching up on sleep. :)

My first love was Full House - oh how long ago that was! All through the drama I was fascinated by the odd fashion choices, Rain's crazy cute enigma, and the overall love story. It may have been a very typical drama - with such a lovely cast hehe - but at that time, so many years ago, I loved it so much! Rain still hits a weak spot to this day hehe

Coffee Prince. It's one of the most popular ones, but it truly is one that did everything right. It had an amazing cast and a story that shows how love knows no boundaries. It's the one I can recommend to my friends who aren't really Asia enthusiasts per say and wouldn't normally find themselves watching a Korean TV show because the message is universal and it's a great example of cinematography. I've since watched many good and bad dramas, but it's one of those TV shows I come back to and watch a couple episodes every now and then. The feelings and kisses are real and the kisses (not so much a rarity anymore haha.) I just love it, hands down and even though I don't get some of the cultural references, I still like it more than some of the American TV shows I watch because it overall is better made and that's something that can be seen universally.

Winter Sonata! In the beginning, I wasn't even interested but my friend insisted that I watch it. She lent it to me for a week but I never touched it until the last few days. And, man, was I hooked! I was totally crazed: crying like crazy whenever someone dies or forgets or disappears or whatever! And getting frustrated like crazy every time there was another damn plot twist and turn. I don't know if I'm thankful, but I sure am enjoying the hell out of it over here in the dark side!

My first drama love was...tadaaaa! Winter Sonata! My sister convinced me to watch it and I was hooked (line & sinker included!). BYJ was so handsome then. My husband used to imitate the way BYJ tilted his head up in a contemplative way and everyone would crack up and tease me until I blushed. Now, I can't understand how I fell in love with BYJ in the first place; he looks so oily to me now. But my love for Kdrama remained and I'm hopelessly addicted. Someone please send me to Kdrama rehab!

my first drama love was 9 ends 2 outs. >_< the chemistry between the lead couple Lee Jung Jin and Park Soo Ae was perfect. This drama was the first drama to make me cry when the lead couple decide to spilt up. Also it questions the boundary between friendship and love in reality. It never went beyond neverland( reality doesn't exist)...I think I went over because it reminded me that love is anywhere and possible anytime
