Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Taiwanese drama Westside Story was the first drama that got me totally hooked, also the start of my crazy collection of dramas vcds/dvds. Though my first korean drama was Full House, and my all-time favourite is My Girl. So glad I manage to get the snow globe from precious moments too^^ Bbashya!!

What really draws me to dramas is that I am able to see the different perspectives of the many various kinds of stories that I will never experience possibly in my whole life. All the what-if, dreams-come-true, cuteness romance stories allows me a little get-away from real life, everyone needs a break away from studies or work sometimes.

So thanks heaps to Dramabeans for all the recaps! Really helped me in deciding which dramas are worth investing in (my recent fav 49 Days) , while which are just..meh. Congrats on hitting 5th year and looking forward to seeing 10 anniversary soon! I'll be supporting!! :DD

Love Story in Harvard. My Korean roommate was watching it at the time, so I got pulled in. There's nothing remotely memorable about that drama except Kim Rae Won.

Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary! Next to the dramas themselves this is my favorite website. My first K drama was Boys over Flowers. I stayed up every night watching it on Netflix, I watching on streaming Netflix on my way to work, I watched at work and not just during lunch time. (I was so obsessed) I am slightly ashamed to admit it but towards the end of it I actually took a day off of work because I stayed up the night before having a marathon so what did I do with that time off, watch more Boys over Flowers of course. I have been in love every since. I use to laugh at my cousin for watching these dramas, recently, she pointed out I have seen more than she has at this point.

congrats on your 5th anniversary!! :D

for me, it's sungkyunkwan scandal that made me stark raving mad over korean dramas. I did watch other korean dramas before this, but I wasn't crazy over them as I was over skks :) I was really surprised at my enthusiasm for this, because I didn't really think that I would like sageuk.

though the ending is iffy in terms of resolving the plot, but great in terms of fan service, I enjoyed the journey, of each character growing emotionally and of course, the bromance!!! it also helps (okay, a great deal tbh :)) that the 3 guys (mickey yoochun, yoo ah in, song joong ki) are really good-looking, and they're more fleshed out individually than other quartets you see, for instance in boys before flowers, that are introduced to us as a group collectively. in skks, these guys are introduced to us separately first, and we watch how each of them manages to befriend one another, despite a rocky start. I was so crazy over skks that I even watched the award ceremony for the first time because I can't get enough of them and I want to moon over them somemore, and also see them get the awards that I feel that they deserve; btw, LOL at the couple award that yoo ah in and song joong ki got!

Well the first drama I ever started watching was Playful Kiss, I just accidentally started in on it on Hulu and it was unlike any kind of television I had ever seen and it really attracted me (of course now I see it as the boring k drama it is), then I was really into BOF, mostly for the eye candy.

But it wasn't until Coffee Prince that I got it. I. got. it. I didn't do anything for the entire day and finished the entire show in just under a day. Never have I ever related to and felt the pain of a character like I did with Eun Chan. I've been looking for a drama as good ever since. Although, City Hunter came awfully close.

It would have to be Coffee Prince-stumbled across it one day about 2 years ago and that was it. Love at first sight. I couldn't stop. I think i watched every episode in 2 days. My husband found me hunched over the computer, hungry and looking a little crazed, but i had to have more. I've been watching any drama I can get my hands on since then. I just recently just bought myself City Hunter on DVD and so has begun my own personal K-Drama collection and continuation of my addiction.

my first drama that i completely fell in love with is Coffee Prince. This was my first introduction to Kdrama. I was bucking it like crazy, when my friends kept telling me that I'd love it...one day I decided to watch it during lunch break and it snowballed from there...I've actually beaten my friends on how many dramas i've seen - I also have a spreadsheet of dramas that I like, dont like and want to watch - just to keep everything straight.

Congrats on reaching 5 years! I remember stumbling upon Dramabeans around 2008. This is the one site I go to for kdrama analysis and recaps. You guys are amazing! Thanks for providing such a wonderful site.

My first Kdrama love was definitely My Name is Kim Sam Soon. It's not my first Kdrama, that's Stairway to Heaven. I still remember the endless amount of hours that I have spent sitting in front of my laptop just to watch dramas.

My Name is Kim Sam Soon has everything there is to offer for a drama-watcher like me, witty and heart-wrenching. The best part of it all? The female protagonist wasn't your typical pretty girl who gets all the boys. So I admired that a lot. The one scene in My Name is Kim Sam Soon that will always be my favorite is when Sam Soon and Jin-Heon are in the restroom together. And how she told him about how depending on your blood type, it can determine how a person would handle a situation when there's no toilet paper.

I have watched a couple of dramas before Kim Sam Soon but most of them were melodrama. Imagine an 8th grader watching Autumn Tale and Stairway to Heaven. Kim Sam Soon was the drama that got me hook, line, and sinker.

Coffee Prince! I swear, before CP, I used to laugh at my friends for being obsessed with Korean Dramas. I tell them "what's with those Korean Dramas anyway (*eye roll*)?". But I accidentally stumbled on CP when I got sick and I have nothing to watch. The channel I ended up with is showing a re-run (yes, it already was a re-run!) of CP... and from there, I was hooked! Now my friends are the ones laughing at me for staying up way to late (and having eyebags because of it) just by watching Korean Dramas :D
oh btw, Happy 5th Anniversary Dramabeans! It's because of CP that I came to stumble upon your blog :) To more drama recaps! Cheers :)

I learned about Asian dramas through the Public (PBS) channel, where I saw the Japanese drama Virgin Road with Sorimachi Takashi. After that, some time passed and then going through the channels I stopped to see Pure 19/Pure in Heart with Goo Hye Sun and Seo Ji-seok. Afterwards, I looked more information on the actors and saw that she did Boys Over Flowers, which looked interesting and from there one actor led to another drama, to another actor, script and so forth. It just opened a different world of entertainment.

My Girl. Back then, my mom used to rent VCRs at some Korean owned video store and force my sister and I to watch Korean dramas in the hopes that it would teach us Korean. My sister and I actually secretly fast-forwarded the videos when she wasn't looking. But My Girl, for some strange reason, was fun. Maybe it was the good-looking cast, or Lee Da Hae's strange main character, but it was the drama that made me realize Korean dramas could be fun, even without understanding 100% of what was being said.

I checked Tree of Heaven out of the library thinking it was a movie. I saw all the discs and thought I'd never watch the whole thing. I meant to take only a peek. Six hours and a box of tissues later I was still in front of the TV. It took only one drama. I've now seen every Kdrama in three different library systems and subscribe to paid drama sites. Kdramas are like heroine to me.

Samsoon!!! my k-drama love =) !!!

. . . but my first k-drama was one mom and three dads, one sleepless night I was channel surfing and landed on that, and I liked it, but when I looked for it the next day, I couldn't find it nor the next day after that, so I turned to the internet , and in my search I found Dramabeans, and my first thought as I looked at the site was "waaahhhh I can I read about them too?!!?!?" =) and I never left, it was here where I learned about samsoon. . . . so now that I think about it, it was Dramabeans, that brought me to the dark side

First of all... CONGRATS JB~!! 5 years is awesome - thank you so much for sharing this site with us. Yours (and GF's) witty insights are always so amusing and on-point and I really appreciate all the cultural references and explanations you provide :)

First drama love is probably ISWAK (TW drama) - i loved it even as it frustrated me to no end. But it brought me over to the Dark Side for sure :) First kdrama love is gonna have to be My Girl though - the Hong Sisters hooked me early on!!

My first drama was Boys over Flowers. I stumbled across it on youtube and despite at first mocking Lee Min Ho's ridiculous perm, Gu Hye Sun crazy overacting, the many plot holes and Kim Hyun Joong's wardrobe, it's cracktasticness eventually dragged me in and once it had no need for sleep could stop it! 2 days and much frustration over my incredibly slow internet connection later I had finished and after recovering lost sleep I want on to play it's ost until everyone else in the house was begging for mercy. Since then I have watched a lot of dramas but none quite match my original, crazed, fan-girl obsession Boys over Flowers. I guess you never forget your first kdrama love.

That would be My Girl, for me. I marathoned that drama, watched it with other people just so I can view it multiple times. I went into shipper mode for Lee Dong Wook and Lee Da Hae, and even learned to join a forum just so I can hang out with other shippers. I was introduced to the Hong Sisters because of this drama, and squealed when I discovered there were more of their dramas to watch. I've since gone on to love other dramas, but the first one remains special.

Since then, there was no turning back. I couldn't even imagine a previous life when I didn't watch Kdramas. It's a crazy, cracktastic world, and I love it.

Happy 5th birthday, dramabeans! I remember when this site was still on the javabeans.wordpress site. Fun times. I hope the old timers still come by.

It was 'You are beautiful' and 'Iris'. I love both of them cause they are funny and while "You're beautiful" is funny and romantic, "Iris" really got me into the story with the teasing and the action ^^ I've been watching a lot since then and I hope that one day K-Dramas will be shown around the world and if possible in my county (Croatia) :)

We're talking about drama right, not specifically K-drama. Well, my first drama is It Started With A Kiss (TW drama). I was totally hooked though I can never understand a girl who single-mindedly live her life for the sole purpose of being someone's wife ... but I stick it out since you know it's a drama, they can write the most non-sensical story there is since it's a drama ... haha ...

Anyway, a year later I swore off TW drama since the plots are always recycled and I encounter the same faces over and over again (it gets boring if you know what I mean). Since then I've moved on to J drama and K drama. To be honest, K drama seems more entertaining these days because ... of your recap ... >< That's pretty much the extent of my drama watching these days, reading your recap, which I would say is much more entertaining than watching the actual series :)

Thanks gals and happy belated 5th birthday ** throws confetti **

From that day on i've never stopped. I still consider kdramas the best medicine for sickness or just for any ordinary day.

(so far it has led me to thousands of hours behind the screen and to Jeju^^) But its so much fun on the dark side.

The drama that brought me over to the "dark side" was Secret Garden. Yes, I'm a new drama fan. Secret Garden was so different from anything I had ever seen on American television...I was captivated from the first episode. I loved that I was sobbing one minute, then laughing through my tears. I'm now a K-drama addict...I've watched 13 dramas in the past couple months and made addicts out of most of my friends and colleagues.

**Boys over Flowers** Like many of the comments here a friend had recommended watching it and when she told me the premise I scoffed, but sadly I was sleeping 2-3 hrs. a night in a marathon effort to finish it. Also, with my immaculate timing, I started watching the series right before my wedding date. My now husband was like, "uh - are you going to be watching this on our honeymoon?"

My first drama love was a Jdrama - Samurai High school. I watched the series thrice. It was really good. Miura Haruma did an amazing job in acting two completely different roles - a dorky high school teenager and a moody historical samurai. The fighting was amazing but what really touched me was the concept of friendship in this drama was portrayed in a much smooth yet powerful way compared to other dramas. I am a very lonely person in real life. Though I know many many people, it was hard for me to say who are my friends and who are not. In a way this drama helped he define friendship. It also showed me how people can change and do change

Now, after almost 2 years seems like I've changed. And this drama is one of the many reasons why this happened. I don't regret who I was, but change is good, Isn't it ??
