Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

tbh my first drama was Meteor Garden :)) with F4 and Jerry Yan and all that jazz, but I didn't know what dramas were back then - so I have to say my first "real" drama was Japan's Hana Kimi. I have to admit it was the idols that brought me in, and the cross-dressing storyline :)) From then, it snowballed :3

BTW can we post multiple times in a single post/draw?

First love? First drama?
It was Wonderful Life. There were so many scenes that made me want to cry, to laugh and to just squeal. The drama and it's characters just caught my attention and I'm not ashamed to say that I was addicted to it.

It opened me up to many different dramas that made me want to do all those stuff all at the same time.

MY pick would be Taste Sweet Love / Snow White Taste Sweet Love..

It may not be the best drama I've seen or could not even compare to the A-list dramas but a First love is a First love. I fell in love with the story, the characters, the heartbreaks, and the swooning first kiss of Yoo hee.

It was the first drama I have watched and right then and then I was majorly hooked to Korean Dramas. And watched almost all of them that I get interested in.

My favorites are Sassy Girl Chun Hyang, My Girl, Save The Last Dance, Sumer Scent, Iris, and a whole lot more. All thanks to Taste Sweet Love that introduced me to the world of Korean Dramas. ^^

Mine would be

Full House!!

One of my random drama loving friend suggested I give kdramas a try and I have been hooked since. American dramas just dont have the same feeling, humor, cuteness and stories that kdramas do and Im sure it didn't hurt that there are so many gorgeous eye candies to look at... kekeke ^^!

You're Beautiful reeled me in. I had watched a Japanese drama that my friend told me I should watch and I liked it. I thought I would just watch another one because I had some time to spare, but I didn't know what to watch. So I went searching and I found You're Beautiful. I saw the story line and I loved it, but I was unsure because I knew nothing about South Korea nor their Dramas. But like I said, I had the time to spare. After the first episode I was hooked. I watched one after another and within two days I was done. But it went by so fast, so I watched it again. When that wasn't enough I went searching for more. And more I found. I went through so many that I can't name them all. I also fell in love with South Korean culture and now I study the culture and I am just beginning to start studying the language. It is amazing what one drama can do to you and for you and your life.

Initially, I did not really care about the existing dramas, but I soon got hooked (6 years ago) by watching My Lovely Kim Sam Soon, which was also my first drama!!! Both awesome acting by Hyun Bin and Kim Sun-ah had captivated me. I totally could feel their sadness when they cried in the drama. Also, the director and cameraman did an awesome job taking the scenes in the drama. One of the scenes that I still remember is when Hyunbin played piano when he and Kim Sun Ah were drunk (and yup, this is followed by a kiss scene^^). The camera angle in taking the scene is AWESOME- and it couldn't have been better!!

Now, I still regularly follow dramas especially those acted by both of the leads in My Lovely Kim Sam Soon! Can't wait for more of their dramas!! hehehe (: But personally, none of their dramas could beat MLKSS! MLKSS ROCKS :)

Anw, Just to share! Some other nice old dramas include: Goong, Coffee Prince (one of my best-est drama ever!), My Girl! THEY'RE DAMN WORTH WATCHING!!

Thank you dramabeans operators/subbers for this opportunity for us to share this drama experience! this website rocks!!!!!

I started watching dramas a few years ago but I started to lose my sanity when I watched Story of a Man... Three nights in a row.
It was so intense that I couldn't turn off the computer even if I knew I had to go to work a few hours (minutes) later. I'm really sorry

By the time it was air in some local TV in Indonesia, i was in my last year in junior high school...
And i was drift in sadness and tears once i watched it.
It so sad, but somehow i don't know, i keep entangled until it end....

And that was my first love in Kdrama...
Steal my heart, make me fall into deep feeling, and than fill my day's with Sadness and tears - Just like the feeling of First Love.....

It was so intense that I couldn't turn off the computer even if I knew I had to go to work a few hours (minutes) later. I'm really thankful for my coworkers who had to bear with my cranky self all day long ^_^

It was exhausting but I love being addicted to a drama and it doesn't happen very often. Tamna the island, White Christmas, the Painter of the Wind and Warrior Baek Dong-soo had a similar effect.

I have been a drama enthusiast ever since 2001 and I am 17 now. Do the math.

Anyway, thanks to my neighbor and relative whom I will be forever grateful to, I was introduced to the dark side starting with the Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden. Drooling about boys twice my age, I couldn't get enough of it. I bought merchandises of all sorts and kissed their glossy faces on the poster beside my bed each night without fail.

Shortly after, the same person showed me a bunch of DVDs which made me as I am today. These were the legendary series which each drama watcher should know in order for them to say that they really KNOW dramas. The first Korean drama I saw was either Endless Love by Song HyeKyo and Wonbin or Loving You by Eugene and the late Park YongHa. After which, the stream of dramas came. Beautiful Days, Winter Sonata, Full House, Sweet 18 and other dramas (particularly those whose leading lady acquired a cancer of some kind; yes, those were the days) became a permanent part of my life and I am not ashamed to say it.

Due to those, I remain a sucker for sweet romances and I still am waiting for the perfect rich grumpy guy who'd sweep me off the streets and get involved in my average life completely. Oh, well.

*Wishful thinking: If by any chance I win and you have City Hunter merchandises up for grabs next time, you can let me lose. >.< I'd like to join the other contest, but the You're Beautiful set seems wonderful too. Okay, I sound so ambitious and arrogant now. Sorry.

it was "my girl" by no less than the Hong sisters... this was the drama who made me really addicted, i remember watching it and never wanting to go to the office, bcoz even in work i replay all the scenes in my head and anticipating what would happen next... I was so "in" to the show... and when I finished it, I was like in a withdrawal symptoms, I cant stop replaying scenes I want to watch over and over and over again... and then I started looking for more dramas especially the one that are written by the Hong Sisters, thanks to Dramabeans I am always updated!

When I first stumbled onto YouTube, I was searching for Asian movies not available in the US. I clicked on the first episode of Hana Yori Dango and was blown away. The music, the scenery, the characters, the fast paced story blew away my concept of "tv entertainment."
I thought "why was I not notified of this site?" and "are all dramas like this?."
I watched the entire series through the night, going through the entire spectrum of human emotions the drama invoked.
I had the school the next day. I soon heard on the news about the explosion of YouTube since it first launched and knew I partook in it. Needless to say, I've been a drama addict since.

Mine's Autumn in my Heart, the first look at K-drama and the pretties of Korea. At first I just wanted to give it a try to see what a K-drama was like, but then I found myself grabbing disc after disc (back then they were in VCDs), and was so hooked I watched Hotelier immediately after.

I've been a big fan of K-dramas ever since.

A friend told me about kdramas about 10 months ago. Since then I've watched 46. But my first is still my favorite - Coffee Prince. Especially episode 10 which I have re-watched at least a dozen times.

My complete devotion to dramabeans started soon after. Thanks, javabeans and girlfriday, for hours (and hours) of reading pleasure. You add immeasurably to my understanding of the dramas, besides just making me laugh out loud. Love ya!

My first drama was Goong. I couldn't understand a word without subtitles and the video was seriously LQ, but it brought me over to this better (?) side of life: staying indoors, only leaving when absolutely necessary, sleepless nights doing drama marathons...And of course, going on Dramabeans!

This site is the drug in my veins, and happy birthday!!

It's my birthday in January too. :p

Well, to tell you the truth it was a japanese drama that caught me first. Ok, now that I think about it, it wasn't really the first one I liked, just the first I watched and it wasn't so memorable or I wouldn't still trying to remember its name. If it helps, I'm sure someone dies.
Anyway, the first Korean drama that got me hooked, as in non-stoping-talking-about-it-and-asking-desperately-someone-to-please-download-it-for-me (I was soooo OUT of this entire universe), was Full House. Yeah I know that's a very cheesy choise, blame it one the Hallyu wave, but what can I do when you're totally new to this and still doesn't know that you have a thing for bickering ones? *waiting impatiently for Wild Romance*
So kill me and them give a ticket to heaven in order to compensate for that bloody nights I spent in front of the computer almost yelling to YouTube so it would load faster the videos then almost cooking my brains just so I would understand the subtitles (this was way back then, the time I could not write a single damn worth phrase in english).
As you can see my english stills suck, but I can read and for now, that's more important.

So many problems in terms of plot and music (seriously - how is a fight with your best friends at a hockey rink "almost paaaradise"??) but still loved it loved it loved it.

Hello there,

my first drama was "Wonderful Life" and I stumbled over it, because I was looking for "Moon River" by Audrey because my mom loves it. Instead I found "Moon River" by Eugene and I was blown away. After very teary sixteen hours in which I watched the entire drama, I was covered by and buried in Kleenex, because all the clichées and the makjang in dramas weren't that to me at the time - for me, all was new: The little girl with cancer, the love triangle, the wedding contract, the bickering adults, everything. It was funny and sad and dramatic and beautiful all in one package and I thought: Why isn't German TV like that? (Because if you don't like police procedural series, you are pretty much beeped around here.) And since then - after "Goong" and "1 Percent of Anything" and "Full House", I have never ever looked back. And to this day, I don't regret it. I'm learning Korean now. I hope to go there next year. I have Korean and Japanese and Chinese friends. In real life. It has changed everything.

Yours,
Aigoopi

Mine was Full House. But it took a while for me to get hooked.

My physics teacher in highschool was from the Phillipines, and he is the one that actually introduced me to Korean dramas. My sister and I were over at his house with some friends helping him to pack for a move (he was leaving to teach elsewhere). He'd made us some Korean beef BBQ for lunch, and put on some DVDs of Full House that he'd borrowed from a friend. Needless to say, we didn't do a lot of packing for the rest of the day. I think we watched the first 5 or 6 episodes. Favourite scene = Song Hye Gyo head-butting Rain.

After a few years I remembered how funny it was, and tried to figure out what exactly I had been watching. That brought me to a few internet sites with subtitled dramas.... and here I am! That concludes the story of 1. why I actually enjoy Full House, and 2. why I've been watching dramas for the last 4 1/2 years in a small town in Canada where I don't even know any Koreans and everyone thinks I'm nuts.

Hmmm, I think my first addictive kdrama is also Stair way to heaven. I have been watching asiandrama since young but mainly chinese dramas but i remember stair way to heaven was my fav and most memorable korean drama. It was probly 6 or 7 year ago and me and my cousin was not allow to stay up to finish it since it was quite late already. We WERE both so upset that we stay up most of the night talking about it, lol. That was really fun.

Also congrate on your anniversary, hope there will be many more great dramas to come!
