Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Pasta was the first drama I ever watched almost two years ago. I'm not sure why it got me completely saturated in the kdrama world but it did, and not too long after I stumbled on Dramabeans. What can I say... Gong Hyo Jin was a very persistent character.

Happy birthday Dramabeans, thank you cause your insights have helped me a lot with dramas i would have appreaciated much less if i relied only on my ignorance of the K culture, metaphors, subtle meanings and so onXD...
My first drama was Goong...i loved it from head to toes. Now i found it average, however i have an endless love for Joo Ji Hoon, whom i really want to come back to his fullest glory ...
Goong changed my life in a way. it was funny cause i was browsing "Vallenatos" in youtube, and a video appeared with Goong's pics...the comments talked about "doramas". I searched the word and there my craziness started.
Due to this, I have met awesome people, broadened my mind, and met a beautiful culture.
Once again, congrats and enjoy our love and regards :)

Devil beside you. I watched that while I was hospitalized in China for a back surgery, and basically fell in love with the fact that there could be so much drama filled into 10 dvd discs. Totally agree that dramas suck away youth. haha

The first drama I watched was almost two years ago - MLKSS. Available at the library. But it was City Hall and then Secret Garden that had me skipping meals and staying up late to finish watching the series. That was the extent of the library offerings, but then the internet pointed me to your site, and once I discovered DramaFever and KimChee Drama I was definitely HOOKED.

My first drama love would have to be Mei-chan no Shitsuji. It was absolutely ridiculous and full of crack, but so funny to watch.
If it has to be K-drama, then I am guilty of Full House being the first to pull me in. The heroine is cute and a woobie, the hero is caught in a ridiculous love triangle, and the second lead seems almost the perfect guy for our heroine.

My 1st drama was Full House with Rain and Song HyeKyo.
What caught my interest was how different to what America considered dramas to be. We have 20+ years of soap operas and Korea has 20+ episodes of dramas.
I think the biggest factor of my love for Full House was Rain. He completely captured me. I just found him to be one of the hottest thing to ever walk on this planet LOL. Every look, expression, movement he did just captured me. And his chemistry with song hyekyo was sizzling. To people who's been a fan of kdramas for a long time, Full House just seems like a another cliche romcom kdrama but to me.. it was absolutely magical and I loved it.

The first drama I ever saw was 진짜 진짜 좋아해 in 2006 with S.E.S's 유진, the lovely 이민기, 류진 and the too cool for school, I-can't-believe-he's-really-a-rock-star, 김창완. I was in 10th grade and stumbled upon it on television one lazy summer day. Thank goodness it was broadcasted with English subtitles because I would have bypassed it otherwise. Although it was a very kooky show, it was funny and unique and I found it to be a refreshing departure from American shows. Don't get me wrong, Korean dramas can be formulaic too, but they are gripping in an unparalleled way. Anyways, 진짜 진짜 좋아해 sealed my fate as a drama devotee and a fan of Korean culture. All of my Korean drama watching and OST-listening days inspired me to learn 한글 and take Korean in college, which never would have happened if not for that show.

The first drama I watched that got me hooked (it took only one!) was My Lovely Sam Soon aka My Name is Kim Sam Soon. I remember it like it was yesterday...my sister and I were sharing a room and I was watching it with my headphones on because she was going to sleep. I ended up giggling so much (not the norm with me) that she had to see what the fuss was about. She ended up finishing the series with me :)

My first love was the ever so melodrama, Autumn In My Heart. That freakin crack flooded me into the k-drama world and introduce me to my many many drama dates in the future. It showed me that every other drama after it will never be the same, introduce me to learning that most dramas under it's genre will have almost the same cliches', and nothing will change my second lead love of Tae Suk with the acotr that stole my heart, Wonbin.

You're beautiful is the one that started it all for me. I had watched a a couple bad ones that made me not want to ever watch another k-drama again and this was my last chance before giving up on them. So glad I picked this to watch... ive now watched at least 100 k-dramas and may never be able to stop...

For me it was Kmovies that got me into Kdramas. Even though Marry Me Mary was my first drama…..my first drama(s) love did not happen until Coffee Prince and Goong. Oh Boy! and was I addicted…even after a year I am still giddily in love with Kdramas that I had to change my internet package to unlimited download to feed my addiction!!
Thanks for all the hard work on this website javabeans, girlfriday and the numerous guest writers and here’s to many more good years!

happy birthday!
my first drama was full house, which got me hooked despite the fact that i (1) stumbled upon it mid-drama while it was televising on tv, and (2) didn't - and still don't particularly - fancy Rain. but it was good enough to make me sit up and notice kdramas... and to troll the internet for back episodes!
i've been on this slippery slope down the drama-black-hole-of-time for... how many years is that? omg!

My first korean drama I watched was like a year ago. it was pasta. i thought it was cute and nice but i didn't fall in love with it or feel the need to continue watching k-dramas especially since i've seen the effects of the addiction and promised myself i wouldn't become like my k-drama addicted friends...then months later i was bored and decided to watch this silly little drama that i thought would be like pasta and not be a super big deal. it was called coffee prince... it was the drama i first loved. that's when the "drama love" (i don't like to call it an addiction if i'm talking about myself) started and it hasn't ended yet. =)

I loved Princess Hours cause of how the main girl was completely fun loving and wasn't all serious which made her the perfect person for the serious prince :) I thought it made the show pretty awesome by having her being forced to marry the crown prince and showing her trying to adapt to life in the palace. I was a bit annoyed by the fact that the cousin was constantly trying to get the girl even though she had already told him she was in love with the prince at first I was glad that he was comforting her because her husband didn't love her but then when he started trying to steal her from her husband by doing things that made the prince look bad it made me really mad in the end i only felt a slight bit of sympathy for him. I was really happy with the whole show is and always will be my favorite korean show! :)

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary, Dramabeans! ~ (: I've been enjoying your posts for two years now hehe. ^__^ I hope you'll keep up the amazing work!
It took me a moment to remember and I finally came down to this: my drama first love was *drum roll* Boys Over Flowers. I'm thinking that it was for many others, also. (x I remember watching a lot of other dramas before it, but this one caught my attention. Why? Before BOF, I always watched dramas with my whole family, and those were always the kinds like Pure 19 (I believe Gu Hye Sun was the main character). BOF, my family didn't like (LOL), so it was the first drama I got to watch independently. I fell in love with the fact that everything happening in the story was like a girl's dream come true. From being able to go to such a prestigious school, to befriending the hottest and richest boys in that school. I mean, don't you wish that was possible in your life, too?! I was able to fantasize with this drama and that's what made me enjoy it. Nowadays, I sometimes visit Dramafever and reminiscence the F4 with a few episodes; I'll admit that it has its flaws, but still - Boys Over Flowers will be my forever first love. ♥
Thanks for reading, that was quite long. ^__^;;

My drama first love would have to be Coffee Prince. It captured me with it's adorkable characters and chic directing. I was instantly a fan and became eager to see what other dramas were out there. To my surprise, I was overwhelmed with choices. So for the past 4 years I have become a drama addict. No one can save me and I don't mind one bit! The dark side has cookies and hotties!

My first drama love was Meteor Garden, which I stumbled onto via YouTube a few years back but it fell to the wayside until about two years ago when I managed to stumble onto it again after having forgotten about it. From there it's been a downward spiral into addiction from Coffee Prince to Down With Love to Secret Garden and more in-between. While some dramas have fallen flat and remain unfinished, others have only served to further my love of foreign dramas. I really love comedies more than anything because I find the type and style of humor to be a refreshing break from american trends.

My first love for Kdrama is Sassy girl Chunhyang (2005). I fell in love with it accidentally as I intended to hire DVDs of Goong 1 (since at that time - 2007, Goong was widely popular and I was recommended to watch it by my friends) to watch but then I was handed the wrong DVDs. But the film was so interesting. the relationship between two main characters was not only cute, lovely and somehow funny but also valuable. With that drama, I could have laughs but also with it, i could burst in tears easily with such deeply moving scenes as well as script. Up to now, i have watched it for 4 times and sometimes I watch some funny scenes over and over again ( I did download the whole drama) and I feel that i have never got tired of it.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, Dramabeans! I love all the recaps. I read after I watch an ep and you flesh out the episodes beautifully, providing enough cultural and genre background to help me to really understand and enjoy the series.
My very first drama was Temptation of Wife. I came across while channel surfing and there was just so much going on what with the screaming and crying and theatrics that it caught my attention. Plus, subtitles! It was so over the top that I was hooked into watching it until the series ended.
But what really made me fall in love with kdramas, my first OTL, was Coffee Prince. My BFF's sister watches kdramas (a fact that I was not aware of) and in a random conversation I told her about Temptation of Wife. She then recommended Coffee Prince and gave me a brief rundown of the plot. She admitted it sounded ridonkulous, but that I should watch it anyway. I'm very glad that I did because I totally fell in love and my deep abiding passion for Coffee Prince led me to Dramabeans and its been on like Donkey Kong ever since.
I don't comment often, but I check Dramabeans pretty much every day. So, thanks for all the hard work and maintaining such an awesome sight.

Ah, you know what?
Embarrassing as it is, I think my first ever k-drama was in high school while Goong was airing.... much as I loved it, it actually introduced me to my least favorite trope right off the bat! You know, when two characters get married, no change in chemistry, then all of a sudden, "Belch!" ... Must be pregnant! Cue end of series montage and credits. Awwww.
Even still, I used to beg to get out of classes to
"work on my college essays," which meant I would sneak into whatever teacher's office or computer lab was open and stream episodes on their computers :)

My first ever drama that got me running for seconds and much more was Meteor Garden where Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, and Vanness Wu won me over with their F4 tag. Then more versions came out with Hana Yori Dango (which had a superb soundtrack) and then Boys Before Flowers (which struck gold with my ideal man, Lee Min Ho). What actually got me to the dark side of dramas and shows was a variety show called Love Letter. Thats when korean actors and singers became so much more apart of my interests. Subbing of course was of course something we had to wait for back then for at least..1 week after the air date. Sometime around then i discovered dramabeans to help me not only know more about the episode because of my impatience but there were minor things that i would miss without reading the synopsis. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication!
