Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

I guess you can tell I'm a new kdrama fan when I say my first drama love was My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. *o* I still get all moony eyed whenever I mention it. Thanks to that drama, I'm marathon-ing lots of other (really good) dramas whenever there's time from school. xP

My Name Is Kim Sam Soon!

I'd been watching Taiwanese and Japanese dramas for a while, and while Full House was technically my first Korean drama, MNIKSS will always be my first K-drama love. I loved Sam Soon's character so much and while Sam Shik's arrogance annoyed me in the beginning, I liked that she decided to take a chance on loving him and that he grew to love her just the way she was. This, coming from someone who isn't usually a fan of noona romances, but for some reason this couple clicked for me. MNIKSS will always hold a special place in my heart. <3

My first Korean drama was Boys Over Flowers. I was channel surfing because I was bored and I stumbled upon a scene of BOF on my local multicultural channel. At first I stopped because there were four really, really good looking guys standing together, but then as I watched, I actually became interested. I looked up the drama name in the credits, watched the series on Dramafever, subsequenlty discovered Dramabeans and javabeans' recaps of BOF. I am pretty sure I was as addicted to your recaps and your (funny) jabs at the drama, as I was to the drama itself.

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary. May you have many, many more. :D

The first drama that I ever watched (and subsequently fell in love with) was Taste Sweet Love. If I were to have watched after catching the drama bug, I don't think that I would hold it in terribly high regard, but it was my first love and thus will always have special place in my heart!

Happy New Year all!

Full House! I was stuck at home sick one winter so I went over to the library and checked out the DVD box set. It was a marathon :) I snuggled on the couch will hot cocoa and a box of tissues for sneezing.

My first love drama was WINTER SONATA, I remembered i cried a river when I was watching that drama.Imagine knowing the one you so much died, then after years of trying to moving on & finally engaged to the person who patiently waited for you, you saw/met a man who exactly looked like the one you loved without knowing that he is actually the same person but doesn't recognized you at all. although the man got blind in the end still they end up in each others arm.

The first Korean Drama I watched was Coffee Prince! I love that dog that has long fur like a mop! I really liked how cute the drama was. It helped that Big Bang made a parody of it!

Bizarre Bunch!!

My college roommates and I got addicted to this show in 2006. One of the stations in Philadelphia where I went to school played some KBS world programming and they would show a daily every day weeknight at 12:05. My three roommates and I would stay up every night to watch it together, and when the waiting started driving us crazy we would do something to take our minds off of it... like study. Thus started the addiction for me.

Officially though, the first drama that I absolutely fell in love with was Coffee Prince... and it's still my favorite. It was my first miniseries. But I would never have known that such a thing as kdramas existed if I hadn't gotten hooked on dailies back in college. I watched about four of them before I stumbled on Coffee Prince and then there was no looking back.

let's go wayyyy back.
i originally watched dramas with my parents and just watched what they watched...

i really liked bohgo Ddoh bogo (보고또보고)
and 목욕탕집 남자들.. (Sauna house men?)

but the first ever drama obsession watched by myself (squeals included) was probably Propose with Kim Hee Sun and Ryu Shi Won!

or 별은 내 가슴에 (Star in my Heart?) with Choi Jin Shil and Ahn Jae Wook.

ahhh the memories.

Full House ! Need I say more ?

Of course I have to ! I did not even know who Rain or Song Hye Gyo were. I was vacationing in Asia, and too intimidated with the heavy traffic and heat to go out. I was driving my sister insane in the hotel and she bought this drama for me to watch. Out of boredom I did... but, oh boy was I not bored when I started watching it. In-fact, I was so into it that I did not sleep till I finished the 16 episodes.

So yes, that started my "voyage" into the dark side.

PS: So funny you also called it "the dark side" just like my friends and I describe this "dimension" "world".

I came late to d-addictism. My whole family has been watching for many more years than myself -- this trait has to be hereditary. When I caught an episode of "Painter of the Wind," (2008) which my parents were watching, that was my beginning. Now I can't get enough! Thank you for your power blogging and many blessings for 2012!

My first drama was STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN! Kwon Sang Woo's brooding and emotional turmoil had me hooked, and from there I scoured mysoju's list of dramas up and down, day and night to satiate my hunger for drama, unrequited love, cancer, and wicked stepmothers. :)

Happy anniversary, Dramabeans! :)

My first love drama would be My Girl even it's not the first Korean drama I've watch. It was 7 years ago when I was on my junior year on high school. It was summer holiday and my sister rent My Girl vcds. I fell in love with the drama after the first episode, so do my sisters. We watched it together and we couldn't stop. We watched 7 episodes non-stop. I also secretly watched it my self for several times when no one is at home. And until now, I've watched 4 times (2 times in the vcds and 2 times in tv show). And yesterday my sister ask me whether we should buy the dvds and watched it again or not. But, unfortunately we didn't since the new year holiday is over.

It's my first love that still blooming until now. It's not flawless but I really enjoy my time with it.

Boys Over Flowers, quite shamefully.

Early obsession, I remember you. You wreaked havoc on my social life (wait....what social life..) and my exercise plans and my sleep patterns and my miserably little vegetable garden and my grades, OH MY GRADES.

Happy Anniversary, here's to another five!

Coffee Prince.

I watched Boys Over Flowers beforehand I wondered if all Korean dramas were that...faulted, should I say. Then every site I went to, people recc'd Coffee Prince. I watched the entire drama in two days, only sleeping for four hours. I hadn't ever been so moved by a tv show, I had never been so engulfed in something like that. Ever since then I've watched countless dramas and there are some good ones but nothing has moved me as much as Coffee Prince.

We seem to be on the same team. My first kdrama was Goong and since I loved it I started searching and stumbled upon it on crunchyroll. I spent a day and a half locked up in my room, completely immersed in Coffee Prince, its characters and their lives, and all of its general amazement. Up to this day, it remains my favorite one, I watched it a few months ago again and I laughed and cried like the first time, to me there won't be a show like that. It is that powerful, innit? :)

It was Autumn Tale for me. I was around 13 or 14 when that was aired in my country, and boy, what a HUGE amount of tears did I shed for this show! I had my first second male syndrome in that show--Taesuk Oppa (Won Bin!!!) was just too adorable and too loving that I HATED Eunseo for picking her brother, never mind the fact that they weren't really brothers. After that, there was no going back for me! :D

It was FULL HOUSE which started it all! I got hooked and there was no turning back, I'm still an avid kpop lover until now! FH was a very light drama at the beginning and as the story goes, the plot became more and more dramatic. i love the way it ended, not to drastic and not to boring. The cuteness of the scenes, house and other locations and the chemistry between the actors are great!ILOVEIT! And I would love to win those gift certs and the DVD set! thank!

The first K-Drama I ever watched was Dream High. And it completely changed my life!!

I have no internet at home so I was watching it obsessively in half hour installments during my lunch breaks at work (ignoring the fact that everyone thought I was going crazy)

Until I saw the scene where Sam Dong gets a flower pot dropped on his head, whereby I couldn't handle the suspense anymore and straightaway bought a copy of the DVD on Ebay.

The subtitles were so bad I could hardly understand what was happeneing, but I watched the whole thing anyway and went into such a deep funk when it was over that I was unsure I would ever recover.....

But then I found Dramabeans and realised there was a whole world of fantastic K-Drama out there just waiting for me to discover it!!!!

And I never looked back.....

Thanks Dramabeans!! You guys are the best ever!!Thanks for all your hard work! :)

Well since I am Korean and all that, it is only natural for me to have parents who always watched korean dramas. So, back in the day of my childhood, I would sometimes get a glimpse of random korean dramas my parents were into those days: Full House, My Girl, Daejangggeum, Coffee Prince, Winter Sonata, All In etc etc.
The very first one I took the ultimate initiative to watch all episodes was You're Beautiful. It was all thanks to my obsession with FT Island's Lee Honggi. When I heard he was starring in that drama, I was like YAY! OMG!!! I can watch him twice a week being all goofy and stuff ;D It was an entertaining drama if I say so myself. (But everyone else I know liked IRIS better).

So after that, my interest in korean dramas grew and I started to watch others like Full House, 49 Days, City Hunter, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop... etc and discovered my ultimate favourite (I know people are going to disagree but...) My Girlfriend is a Gumiho! :) Oh how I adore that drama :) I still remember my Lee Seunggi fettish ;)

So that's my long-ish -.- story! ~ ^^

Taiyo to Umi no Kyoshitsu in early 2009 was the first i was hooked by

i liked alot about it but mainly fell in love with yoshitaka yuriko

it also tought me that i cant handle melodrama [or makjang plot twists in otherwise innocuous shows]

i did NOT handle the final episodes well

...after finishing that the mysoju rankings convinced me to check out BOF

it was addictive even tho i hated certain moments and i've been watching tons of korean tv ever since

Hm... (Not too happy with the ending, though... although well done, I'm the type of person who loves happy endings.)

My first encounter with the wonderful world of korean dramas was in the late 90's, watching a Hmong dubbed version of "Autumn in my Heart." Good times.....thankfully, i've veered away from melodramas and nowadays prefer fun romcoms. However, i didn't rekindle my love for kdramas until recently when i discovered Lee Min Ho in "Personal Taste." Gotta love that boy!

Why, the original of course: My Name is Kim Sam Soon.

Kin Sun Ah will always be my girl crush; the woman rocks my socks off all the time. Funny, smart and gorgeous? She's totally a triple threat. Then there's Binnie; gorgeous, handsome, sexy Binnie with your man-child ways. Plus the plot was on-point. I honestly feel it set the foundation for K-dramas for today.

Thank God for Youtube, w/o which I would not have found k-dramas and sexy Korean men. Rawr.

Mine is Shining Inheritance (Brilliant Legacy) because of Hwan (Lee Seung Gi). Yes, I'm relatively a newbie. :D It showed on local TV here, and I liked the bickering between Hwan and Eun Sung so much, and the development of Hwan's character, that I couldn't be contented with watching it 30 minutes a night on weekdays. I wanted to find out what happened next, right then and there, and found mysoju, got interested in other dramas, found Dramabeans... it kind of snowballed and bam! I was hooked. And still happily so!

And happy 5th birthday, DB! <3

First off, congratulations girls!! Fifth year and going strong is a biggie =)

My first drama was Sassy Girl Chunhyang. And omg, the first episode itself sucked me in and before I had time to say "what the hell is going on?" I had been bought in hook, line, sinker and all.

C'mon, who can forget the adorable bickering, the meta and the awesomeness that is Jae Hee?And Mongryong's adorable dad? And how was i to know that creepy-stalker-love Ajusshi aka Uhm Taewoong aka dog-crazy-bumbling superstar would become my favorite kind of man-child Ajusshi crush a couple of years later?

What fun's a drama where the female lead is a damsel-in-distress? Which was probably also why I LOVED that she was so kickass instead. Even if she did get a bit too crazy and pls-hate-me towards the end.

And like JB, Sassy Girl Chunhyang is my first love too. Always will be.

Coincidentally enough, the very next drama I watched was Hong Gildong, so awesome initially that I had to search it up online and voila! That was how I met thou- Dramabeans! And must say,it was love at first sight. =D

By now I've watched all sorts of dramas, hundreds probably- y'know- The good, the bad and the maketh-no-sense kind. And it's always been JB (and later on GF too) who's been the shining beacon to help me out and explain stuff and why they were the way they were. Speaking of which, bring back the Glossary!!

Love ye, and keep making my day(s) awesome with your insightful, punny, cracktastic articles, recaps and podcasts.

Always yours,
Azra =)

Mine's MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON. I watched it last 2006 without any idea what a Korean drama is like, nor how long and how many episodes there are into it. I was just... curious. And curiosity "killed" me. I ended up finishing the 16 episode drama in one sitting, laughing and crying for 16 solid hours. The drama changed my perspective in life and I'm still holding on to things I learned from that drama until this very day. It also opened a totally brand new world. I became enthusiastic with other Korean dramas and drama watching since then has become a part of my life. I became interested in Korean language and Korean culture, I've met lots and lots of wonderful friends, and it made me addicted to Kim Sun Ah.

Full House!!

This was the first Korean Drama that I ever watched and I will be honest, it wasn't my favorite but for some reason, after watching it for a second time, I grew more and more in love with FH. I think the pairing of SHK and Rain was perfect and they were the reasons why I kept going back. After FH, the drama fever began and it never stopped. This will forever be my love and the original Korean drama that started this whole phase.

I can watch FH all day and not get bored. Every couple of months or so, I re-watch it just for the heck of it and all those feelings start again. I am waiting patiently for the second installment.

LOVERS IN PARIS!!
it was on dubbed chinese on the chinese channel and i just loved it!! How can a girl fall for a guy that look so mean to her when there's another guy that likes her and actually treats her BETTER and care for her. Then after watching korean dramas since then it turns out that it's a norm to have that kind of plot. I wanted to hear it in the actors real voices so I found it online and i couldn't believe that Kim Jung Eun voice is pretty deep. i guess since i was so use to hear a very girly voice from the chinese dubbed.

Since then i've been HOOKED!! i stopped watching hk and taiwan dramas and so far just been sticking to korean dramas. After stumbling onto this website it has give me more insight of the kdrama world than any other fan sites that i've been on.

THANKS DRAMABEANS and Happy 5th Anniversary and many more.

After living in the States for 22 years, I kind of put majority of Korean culture and everything related to it hidden deep in the back of my memory. At my sister's insistence, I rented the videos from a local Asian market. Oh my, I was hooked!! Kwon Sang Woo was so good looking!! Korean men that I remembered from my childhood didn't look like that!! Since then, I can't stop myself and is totally addicted!! I totally rely on Dramabeans to catch me up to date on the latest news, recaps, and song downloads. HAPPY 5th ANNIVERSARY!!! And many more to come!! <3
