Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

To be honest, the show that brought me over to the dark side wasn't a drama, it was actually a movie. The Classic made me fall in love with the actual idea of love transcending time and soulmates. But if I had to pick a drama, Stairway to Heaven is the first ever that made me realize dramas are addicting and made me cry:')

Wow 5 years! What a coincidence, it has actually been 5 years since i've first started watching dramas :O

My first drama, like many of you guys, was Full House! I fell in love with the characters, cried for them... I even saved images and quotes from the best scenes (if i would watch it again today, i would probably laugh at the acting and storyline ;P). It was then followed by My Girl, Stairways to Heaven, Delightful Girl, Fantasy couple....etc.
And i have to admit, even with all the cliches and stereotypes, i'm still addicted!

Happy Birthday Dramabeans! Thank you for your hard work all these years!

My first love would have to be...after watching Kwon Sang Woo in Stairways to Heaven. I have to say I went to the dark side because of that man and I haven't regretted it ever since.

It has to be Palace or how I used to refer to it: Princess Hours. I was flipping through the channels and stumbled upon this drama by chance and it happened to have subtitles. It started out slow, I'd spend five minutes watching it and then go back to an English broadcast channel. It was a cycle, until I finally just stayed on and finished the episode. I was instantly captivated with the extravagant sets and of course I was instantly drawn into the romantic drama of the show. My heart swelled and broke in half with Yoon Eun Hye as Shin Chae-Kyeong. I hated and then loved Shin, loved and then hated Yul. I loved everything about it, the cuteness, the comedy, the drama and how easily it moved me to tears. (I was a teenager mind you, being highly emotional was the theme of high school). After it ended, I was obsessed with finding out if a second season was in production and was determined to find it on dvd. This led me to buying a bad quality version of the drama and opened the door for me to find other dramas.

My first kdrama was boys over flowers. I was really really bored and thought I should just give it a shot since it was on hulu for free. At first it was really weird, but I couldn't help but enjoy the quirkiness. It was all so different from American shows. And the romances were actually cute and adorable. So from then on I was hooked. I love dramas :D

i have watched k dramas way way back my high school days but did not really got me. but sometime last year (2011) Personal Taste was shown in the Philippine local tv I got curious and watched it online, suffice it to say I got addicted and started my k drama fondness. I marathoned my name is kim sam soon, coffee prince, goong, beautiful days and many many others up to the present. I cant imagine my days or nights without watching k dramas... and of course reading blogs have been a hobby.. especially dramabeans you're the best!!! many many more years to come!!! God Bless!!!

My daughter and her friends convinced me to watch You're Beautiful one weekend. I had never watched any Asian drama before - for no particular reason, it just didn't come up on my radar. I started watching with skepticism, but by episode #2, I was totally hooked. I went on to top that off with Boys Over Flowers and I was forever lost. This has led to an unfortunate addiction to Kpop and K-drama that I cannot cure. I faithfully read this column every day - rage a bit when you hate the ones I love - (well, not that much rage :) -- but I don't think I'm going to get over this problem any time soon (don't want to!!) Thanks for the great site where I can keep up with everything and seek support from others with this wonderful addiction! Happy Birthday to all of you!!

This question is so fun! Not entering the giveaway, but thought I'd share my first drama love. I hope it doesn't date me too much, but I watched this drama with Cha In Pyo when I was in the 5th grade called Love in Your Bosom (사랑을 그대 품안에). I don't remember what it was about, but I thought he was so cool riding his motorcycle in every other scene.

Then I watched Star in My Heart with him in it again, but my friends and I all watched it for Ahn Jae Wook. I always think of those two dramas as starting my obsession.

Thanks for your awesome blog. :)

I met my husband who was very much into anime and he got me interested in them. While I was on a site watching anime I saw a link for "Asian Drama". I gave the O.o look and asked a friend of mine what that was (I didn't click on the link for some strange reason to find out myself). She looks at my husband and said "I told you, if you kept messing with me I would get her addicted to it, now she's found them on her own." (small fyi, My husband is a real life troll. He loves messing with people and apparently had angered her.) I did the O.o look again and she told me "If you go there, you will be addicted." So, naturally, I went. First drama I saw was "You're Beautiful", click, watch. I found myself about 17 hours later with blood shot eyes and my mind blown. Where had this been my entire life? From then on I've been hooked. I found dramabeans by randomly searching for info on more Asian dramas and I stick to this site like super glue for info. My husband does not like I found these so score one on my board as it's a trolling factor I get to use on him. And, due to my impatience on waiting for translations, I've begun to seriously study the Korean language for about a year now. Yay for stories and there's mine =)

My first ever drama was actually the Jdrama Vampire Host (or Vampire Gigolo). I watched it in a stupor, amazed at how cheesy, corny, and over-the-top it was. It was GREAT. I went a-searching for more like it, and stumbled upon Mei-chan no Shitsuji, and I immediately fell for Mizushima Hiro. A year later, as I was searching for a new Jdrama to watch, I decided to give in and give Kdramas a try. Though I was pretty sure there was no way they could ever top Jdramas.

Boy, was I ever wrong. My first Kdrama was You're Beautiful, and it's been a beautiful (and time- and bandwidth-consuming) affair ever since! I discovered DramaBeans while searching for more information about Jang Geun Suk (right after watching YB), and it quickly became my go-to site for drama information. Love you DramaBeans!!!

My Drama First Love was All About Eve. I wanted to be Sun Mi who was always being protected by Hyong Chul.
Jang Dong Gun was so cool and handsome in this drama.
I really wanted a boyfriend just like Hyong Chul. He was just so perfect.
All About Eve is really a classic Korean drama.

It is indeed the dark side, because I've been stuck in kdramaland since the year 2000 when I saw Autumn In My Heart. Such craziness, because I have never cried so much over a tv show or movie. Back then, I thought Song Seung Hun was the hottest guy alive!

2009 was my year to turn. I was a anima junki and on one of the web sites that I went to was ad for asian dramas so I desided to check it out.
Because I was checking out differant dramas from differant countries I desided to keep a listing of all of them. At the time I didn't think it would be a big deal. Now I look back and can remember all the great dramas and not so great with alot of fondness.
I got out my old notebooks (yes, old and more than one) 2009 was a great year.... Boys Before Flowers, Your Beautiful, Creating Distiny, and Shining Inheritance (all loved them all).
My favorate thing about asian dramas - that there is so many on any given time. If you dont like what is out there just wait and there is a new batch of dramas soon

my all time fav Korean drama COFFEE PRINCE

oh god! This was so long ago and tons of dramas ago they've all sorta "merged" lol

Well, I guess it started with a japanese drama called Hana Kimi, then I somehow switched to Korean movies for a bit (my friend's fault..somehow these names are slipping me).

Okay, OKay....I'll just choose....You're Beautiful. Not the first one I watched, but definitely got me hooked. lol At first I didn't like it. I was actually gonna stop...but the adorable guys on that show just wouldn't let me finish my math homework. XD

WELP. Boys Over Flowers. It was my first, and after watching 8 more dramas, it’s still my favourite. At first I was veeeery skeptical about it, as my friend was watching it during an anime convention back in September ’11, and it looked about as cheesy as can be. My other friend and I called SHINee’s “Stand By Me” the “Asian Rick Roll Song,” haha (IT SOUNDS LIKE IT, OKAY). About a week later she came over and convinced me to watch the first episode… and I was hooked! Ji Hoo really got to me and his damn angelic perfectness. I’ve been obsessed with kdramas ever since. My third kdrama, You’re Beautiful, I actually pulled my first all-nighter to watch. And thus, my grades began to decline… heehee.

Congratulations on your anniversary! :) It's Full House that brought me over to the dark side!^_^ I was on the way with my son about 6 years ago. But I still couldn't resist pulling an all-nighter to finish it. Being pregnant kept me a bit extra high-on emotions, I remembered feeling very sad and affected when Song Hye-kyo' Han Ji-eun character was left waiting outside the mall by Lee Young-jae. I also love the fashion, so my Han Ji-eun's inspired wardrobe, even hairstyle kept me pretty all the way.

Best Regards! :)

would have to be Full House.. it was not the first k drama i watched.. but it was certainly the one that turned me over to the daark side...
It was a refreshing change from the usual terminally ill lead character and weepies that k drama is usually associated with.
At that point everything from the soundtrack, the fashion, the way song hye kyo ties her hair to the side is something that as a young k drama fan girl, i tried to bring into my own life, into reality...
i think when u reach that state.. you r totally sold.. hook line and sinker.. haha

My drama first love would be Full house. The unique storyline (for me during that time), Bi and Hye Kyo had a great chemistry, they both looked beautiful, the glass house was beautiful, everything was beautiful.. that it just pulled me in haha Oh! can't forget the 3 bears song and the grandmother haha those were the added treats that made the Full house memorable to me :) *sigh* that was about 5-6 years ago..

I've been watching drama since my eyeballs could move. Fast-paced Hongkong serials, Taiwanese Qiong Yao melodramas, local SBC/TCS fare, any j-dorama with Takuya, Buffy, Friends, Popular - these were the companions of my youth. I used to scorn Kdrama with a vengence - all the hackneyed Season stories with birth secrets, fauxcest, lost memories, terminal illnesses, interfering ex's, and familial opposition preventing the star-crossed lovers from being together - argh, argh and more argh with a dash of eye rolling.

Then the local TV station started showing Coffee Prince. It was fresh, funny and had a heroine I was rooting for. Die lah (as we say in Singapore) - I was hooked line and sinker. Due to extreme internet unsavviness, instead of downloading, I went on eBay to buy a cheap DVD of the series. However, cheap wasn't good - the image quality was bad, and the subs were in Chinese, a language I was more comfortable with listening and speaking, than reading or writing. Eventually, having to hunt for more information on this addictive crack made me stumble upon the veritable tome of kdrama recaps that is dramabeans. No looking back since! To count the number of hours spent on kdrama would be to lament my lost youth yet again.

So, Happy 5th Birthday, dramabeans! May you continue to find wormholes in the space-time continuum! ^^

First Shop Coffee Prince and I'll tell you why:

1. Gong Yoo is super handsome and his character is a snappy dresser.

2. No one ever claims CP as their favorite and fandom can raise my level of sneer.

3. Yoon Eun Hye is frumpers to the max in this one which makes me feel good about myself.

4. Gong Yoo is handsome.

5. The different levels in which characters interact with each other is so natural that when it gets down to Dramatime, you feel far more moved than in other shows which perpetuate the you-are-watching-a-fakety-fake-show-and-these-people-are-fake-so-cut-us-some-slack-and-go-with-it rationale.

5. Gong Yoo is hot.

Seventh grade: the inner Asain was released. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by people of the same continentiality and divulged into a common intrest, kdramas and kpop. My first love, as many, was Boys Over Flowers. I wrought myself into self-destrustruction for the F4, going many a night sleepless and groveling to copy friends' math, science, history and English homework, because I'd spent the night before mourning over the recent tradgedy between Jun-Pyo and Jan-Di, and crying over Ji-Hoo's unrequited love. As if that wasn't enough already, I spent my Intro to Technology class secretly watching BOF withouth sound, even though I had no tolerance for shows without sound, I bore it for my boys. Then two periods later, in Algebra I , I would have take notes, and half practice drawing the F4 over and over and over again, asking the kid in front of me, how realistic the pictures looked and got him in trouble for talking at least a million times.....Let's just say, in some crazy way I managed to barely pull off a B- in Algrebra...which in my family, and apparantley the county, equaled an F, and was asked to repeat Algebra I. I was tortured by my parents and forced to sit down and listen to them spew venomouswords and ended up crying for three days straight. We ended up moving to another state just so I wouldn't fall behind in math , and be able to take a higher level course. I ended up rewatching the drama last summer, and realized how totally terrible it was ** don't kill me fangirls!**, and spent a day crying over all the meaningless grief I caused myself. Boys Over Flowers **sigh**...I suffered many lifetimes' worth of pain for my first love...
