Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Happy Anniversary!
My first drama love was Delightful Girl Chun-hyang. I still remember the fateful summer afternoon when I caught Mong-ryong piggybacking a drunk Chun-hyang home on TV. It was love at first sight. *sighs fondly*

Congrats on turning 5!!! Half a decade ;)
For me, it was MY GIRL!!! My mom first saw it when it was dubbed in Mandarin on local tele. Then, she bought the WHOLE SET and got me and my dad hooked. It kept us up till 4am!!! There was laughter for the oh so comical Joo Yoo Rin, and tears shed for both the main couple and the supporting leads. All in all, THIS STARTED MY WHOLE FAMILY'S KOREAN DRAMA ADDICTION <3

My Girl - I think it was about 5-6 years ago that I stumbled upon this drama and I remember that all it took for me to turn to the black side was the first scene. I've been hooked on k-dramas since then and I don't regret a single minut. Thank you My Girl!
Keep doing a great job!

In 2007 I first learned a whole new world that I never knew existed called "K-drama". Prior to this, I knew nothing about Korea and her culture. For me, Winter SOnata was my first korean drama I watched and it captured my heart completely. While watching it I thought why everything is moving so slow in this drama and thinking "this is kinda unrealistic" too, BUT, I really loved the emotional sides portrayed by the actors. I fell in love with Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Woo. TO be honest, I had never seen such an emotional connection between two people like BYJ & CJW, well at least not in Hollywood series. I made a trip to Korea because of my love for Korean drama, I cooked Korean food for my white husband because of my love for Kdrama ahaha I learned a few phrases as a result of watching too many k dramas hahaha
Dramabeans, Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary. I pray that you will have many more successful years. Love you !

Full House! My roommate wasalready a fan of KDramas and I thought she was insane. Then I saw her watching it and I was hooked. Soon I was yelling at Ji Eun for the stupidity of still trusting Dong Wook and Hee Jin, and enjoying the beautiful eye-candy that is Rain and Min Hyuk. Not to mention it's still one of the worst cases of second-male syndrome I've ever had.

Stairway to Heaven. That is the OG of korean dramas. The drama and craziness in dramas come from that one. Somehow I began to watch taiwanese dramas and then one day my parents were watching a vietnamese dub of Stairway to Heaven. After I found a eng sub of the drama I was hooked.

My first K-Drama was Winter Sonata. At the time, I honestly didn't care too much and really only watched because it was something we did as a family. A few years later, my cousin gave me Goong on DVD as a birthday present and I got hooked on K dramas.

Boys Over Flowers! :)
I watched Meteor Garden (Taiwanese version of Hana Yori Dango) 1 and 2 when I was sick with pneumonia in 4th grade. During Thanksgiving Break (freshman year), I was just chilling out with my cousin, being bored, and I thought that I'd check the drama out ^.^ and then we went through 7 episodes in one day... it was kind of scary.
Anyways, we had a contest to see who would finish first :P and I won hehe.
I'm not quite sure what made it so addicting... probably LMH to be honest LOL. It had me laughing and crying and frustrated and then yeah... basically it was like crack and then... >.> I've never stopped watching dramas since then (except when I'm in withdrawal lol).

OH MY GOODNESS!!! So excited!! :D
Irony upon ironies....The first drama I ever saw was Full House in July 2010, but it was not until November that I dipped headfirst into the Amazing Kdrama Ocean with...You're Beautiful!!!! I was a newbie to the scene, and a freshman in university, but I might as well characterize the rest of my year as being a minor in korean dramas. The humor of the Hong Sisters (and I lovee most of their other dramas!!) really got to me in those moments when I was really stressed out from schoolwork, and, yes, I looked forward to the end of the day/the morning when I could watch another episode. I basically got through that one particular week by watching it!!! (in between study sessions of course kekeke) It is still one of my favorite dramas ever, even though I have seen more than 20 now, and have come to appreciate different genres...whereas my sister, who also dived right into all this with me, is a rom-com girl all the way. You're Beautiful has also introduced me to CN Blue and FT Island, since I wasnt listening to kpop before that point, but I loveeee them!!!!! If I were in the drama, I would have been one of the three uber scary A.N.JELL fangirls hahaha (ok not really that scary, but I would love me a look at Jong Yong Hwa *_*

I think Full House was my first drama that I got hooked on to.I remember watching it in Mandarin on TV. My mom and I would sit in front of the TV every weekday at 4pm watching Full House. LOL I loved Rain and my mom was always saying how Song Hye Kyo's really pretty. I think I was 10 and 11 years old LOL. Ahh, it's been 6-7 years already, I don't remember the dark side of the drama anymore. :(

Sorry I hit send too soon. It was great to bond with my grandma, mom , and sis. =)
Han Hyo Joo and Lee Seung Ki did a good job in that drama. It was one of those dramas where you can't stop watching. Luckily we had all the episodes in our hands. =) After we graduated from that, we searched online for other kdramas to watch and next up was Boys Over Flowers followed by Tamra Island! It just keeps getting better and better. =)

But to answer your question. My drama first love that brought me over to the darkside so-to-speak was (gotta be kdrama?) was Gokusen! Watched all three seasons and movie. From there my addiction grew to Taiwon dramas and finally to Korean dramas. It was infectious.

I started this addiction with STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and I really like how Kwon Sang woo acted, but the character that took my heart was Tae-hwa (Shin Hyun Joon), not because I fell in love with him, but the way he portrayed his character. It was one I never saw, not even in my remote imagination. After this drama, I watched a lot more dramas, of course the one that were spanish subtitled like MY GIRL ( love Woooki, btw), YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, DALJAS SPRING, FULL HOUSE, etc. But the one that took my heart completely was BOYS OVER FLOWER, I loved each of the characters, but with this drama I fall in love with Lee Minho. OK back to BOF, I really like the blend of all the characters in here, the "dumb" girl, because really Geum Jandi sometimes she was just dumb. Jihoo, the angel that every girl wants to have around. Yee-jung a rompecorazones but he is the best and so cute, damn! he is so young, and we can't not forget WooBin, I really this character he is tough but sweet, a gentleman. The plot was something different. Since then I am engaged to Kdramas. :)

First, I wanna congratulate you guys on your 5th year anniversary! You guys have come a long way and I'm thankful for your dedication to not only the dramas but to your readers, like me!, as well.
My first Korean drama that sparked my still on-going obsession was Dal Ja's Spring. It was also the drama that first brought me to dramabeans.com! It wasn't too dramatic, but satisfying; sweet, but not too cliche. The days I couldn't watch it right away, I would run over here and read your recaps. Ever since, I've been reading more dramas than watching them! Dal Ja's Spring was definitely my first drama and it was a very good one too. :)

My first drama was Boys Over Flowers (and this started my never ending love affair with kdramas).
I heard about it two years prior watching it, but it was sort of low on the priority list to watch/I couldn't find it. The next year I was in Australia studying abroad and my professor mentioned it in a class I was taking and it seemed everyone woke up and paid attention. I decided I had to see it, but I didn't see it until January of last year. I was looking through hulu, trying to find a new show to watch and I found Boys Over Flowers. I thought I will finally watch it and I fell in love immediately. Ever since then I have watched dramas and even though I have seen better, that was a wonderful drama to start with and it will forever have a special place in my heart.
Thank you javabeans and girlfriday for making such a great site! I came here and discovered many awesome dramas thanks to you! May you and dramabeans keep being successful :)
p.s. This is my one year anniversary I started my kdrama watching! And discovery of dramabeans! Yayy!

Congrats on your 5th Birthday!
I feel small here amongst all other people as I only recently discover K-drama. Here is my wee beginning, it all started when one of my friends were smitten over a certain hot Korean guy in a Korean drama. Curiosity got the better of me and I google it. Dramabeans was one of the first sites that popped up and one that I understand. PLUS it gives me all the juicy bits of the drama.
That drama was City Hunter and yes, that certain hot Korean guy is none other than Mr Ho Min Lee. I was hooked, and thanks to Dramabeans, I was able to enjoy it even more!

I believe the first drama that really made me fall in love with Korean dramas would have to be "Stairway of Heaven." The reason is probably because of all of that mahkjang! lol Which has now left me a sucker for all mahkjang dramas. hahaha Also, another reason would be because I love depressing love stories. Gawd, if only I wasn't such a hopeless romantic. xD And gotta mention, last year was a spectacle for depressing love stories!: "Scent of a Woman", "A Thousand Days' Promise", "The Princess' Man", etc. :D Anyway, that is the one drama that shall always be on my list of favorites.
Also, congratulations on another year!! Gotta say your guys' reviews are always fun to read! You each have a particular personality that makes reading recaps so fresh and different! So keep up the good work!! ^_^ Btw, I'm very happy you guys started recapping "What's Up!" :DDD
P.S. You guys will be recapping "Dream High 2", right??! When it comes out I mean. hahaha

I remember that my first Korean drama was Guardian Angel starring Song Hye Gyo and Kim Jong Min. I was 17, a high-school student and I overheard my classmate recommending this drama to her friends. It was showing on national TV on weekends afternoon (that time Kdramas weren't popular yet so they weren't on the primetime slots). After hearing how great that drama was, I decided to give it a shot.
It was already a few episodes into the drama but nevertheless I still hooked to it just after one episode. One main reason was actually the OST of the drama. Since that day I keep replaying the OST over and over again till I finally could learn how to sing the theme song (by ear because I didn't know Hangul then). The plot was refreshing to me and the main leads were solid in their acting. Since then I didn't miss the rest of the dramas and even went to rent the VCD to catch up on the previous episodes that I missed.
Because of Song Hye Gyo, I went on to Autumn Story and then I knew Song Seung Hun and Won Bin. And the cycle continues till this day. It's been 10 long years since I started watching Korean dramas and I have watched 130 of them (yes I keep count!) and earned the title 'Drama Queen' from my peers.
Korean dramas have become a part of my life and I can never imagine giving them up for anything in the world.

My love of kdramas started when I was a high school sophomore. At that time, a broadcasting network here in the Philippines aired "Endless Love: Autumn in My Hear" with Song Hye Gyo as the female lead. Oh...and how it squeezed my heart and drew out bucket of tears from my eyes. I loved that the characters were not only beautiful but also captivating. From then on, I have been sailing the tumultuous ocean called Kdrama. I just got to always have a dose of it.

The very first kdrama I've watched was Princess Hours/Goong, and I was hooked. Eventually other dramas would win me over, but there's nothing like the first experience. Now and then I'd come back and rewatch certain episodes just to relive that moment. Before Goong I was into Japanese and Taiwanese dramas, but Princess Hours made a jump ship to the Hallyu wave. It got me googling who Yoon Eun Hye was. It got me to learn (amd memorize) my first Korean song, which until now I know by heart. It was so long ago.. but i still watch this drama over and over again!

Heh I started watching dramas the same year this blog started :)
But I didn't discover this little gem until the year after when my obsession moved on from azntv and youtube.
My very first drama love was My Girl. Before that I'd only watched one kdrama and though "Eh, Korean dramas are interesting but I'll stick to my American shows"
Then My Girl happened. There was no turning back after that.
They may have ruined my already dwindling GPA but I can't say I regret them!!
Also thank you javabeans for keeping this blog running and growing for so long. It's def opened a whole new level of entertainment for me!! I can say I even won a computer through you guys ˆ_-

First off, Happy Anniversary, Dramabeans!
Second, my Drama First Love was Boys Over Flowers. I stumbled upon it by accident while reading the Japanese manga. I looked it up online and learned about the dramas (both Korean and Japanese). I tried looking for the Japanese one on Youtube and found the Korean one instead. And, boy, am I glad I did because I discovered the truly talented Lee Min-ho at the same time!
