Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

METEOR GARDEN. I watched it when I was 10. But my first korean drama was FULL HOUSE. My mother - who disliked Asian dramas - and I watched it when she was pregnant with my youngest sister. She was bedridden and nothing else to do after reading the Twilight saga. So I introduced her to Hana Yori Dango, but she thought Oguri Shun had weird expressions so we moved on to Full House next because I heard good reviews of the show. After that I assimilated to K-drama land, leaving J-drama land except for the occassional gems like Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge.

My first K-drama was when I was in high school. I discovered it channel surfing basic tv and landed on a asian international channel that was broadcasting Country Princess starring Bae Doo Naa with subs. I was hooked! Every time it hit 2:50pm, I would scramble for a blank vhs to record the episode played that day. I still have my collection of vhs! Soon after that, internet developed and amazing websites like dramacrazy and viikii would post new eps of kdrama and I became a permanent fan.

Secret (2001) It was my first drama and I was obsessed. The drama is does have some problems but I loved how Ji-Eun's (played by Ha Ji-Won) hair got all black and spikey as she went to the dark side and then changed again when she started coming back from her evil ways. It is 18 episodes of cheesy goodness that shouldn't be missed.

Lessee. It was the summer of 2007 and I had gotten back from studying abroad in Australia, of all places, where I got slightly hooked on anime. I finished the animated Gokusen, and noticed on wikipedia that there was a live action version. I resolved to try one episode and never tell anyone because God knows, how would that EVER work...

Five and a half years later and I'm still hooked. Gokusen, which is more low budget than usual, led to Hana Yori Dango, which is still probably my favorite. I think it was Japanese HYD that led to this site and Boys Before Flowers, so that one is the gateway to the Korean drama world for me. My first real Korean drama love, though, was probably Coffee Prince.

My first love was My Girl. I had somehow stumbled upon mysoju.com after watching Meteor Garden (Taiwanese version of Hana Yori Dango/Boys Before Flowers) and at the time, My Girl was listed as one of their most popular dramas of all time. I was immediately hooked and watched the show over a single weekend. So, as you can see, it didn't take me long at all to cross over to the dark side :) It's still my second-favorite drama after four+ years (barely beat out by another Hong sisters drama), and I re-watch it every once in a while, most recently in October. It's still magical every time.

My first Drama Love was with Stairway to Heaven. I went weeks of withdrawal and even wrote a different version in my head.

The first Kdrama I fell in love with was the first one I saw,
about 15 months ago: Pasta. Since then I've seen many
more and fallen in love with many of them, but I'll aways
remember my first love with affection. Am currently watching
Brain, Fermentation Family, and (when the subtitles ooze
out) Me Too, Flower.

For me it was Coffee Prince, just like many others here. My sister starting watching k dramas way before me. I always wondered what all the hype was about, why she went non-stop watching episode after episode, squealing and swooning a lot. Until I saw Coffee Prince...then I understood it ALL!!! I was unable to stop myself from being sucked in to KDRAMA-LAND.l have become a permanent resident here, I won't be moving anytime soon.... >_<

My first drama was "Boys Before Flowers", (which I am guessing is probably a first for many people). I was out of school and work because of surgery and re-runs and DVDs just weren't cutting it... I was surfing the net and stumbled on a blog about "Boys Before Flowers", and it was drama love at first watch. But it didn't just birth a love for dramas, but for the Korean culture as well. Since surgery (almost two years ago), I have delved into learning the language and even visited Korea for a month. Now I am planing on moving there and working with an organization for the next two years. So dramas have not only entertained me, but have given me a new direction to travel.

Started watching Japanese dramas - loved PRIDE with Takuya Kimura and Yuko Takeuchi.
Korean dramas? One of the first was ALL ABOUT EVE with Chae Rim and Jang Dong Gun (sooooo suave!).

You're Beautiful is my first drama love. It was actually my second k-drama, after Personal Taste, but it was the first I fell in love with completely. I watched it over the span of about three days. I don't usually get worked up because of movies or TV shows, but this show made me laugh, made me cry, made me wish I was in love. Tae-kyung's grand gesture at the end is still my favorite last episode scene ever. I think I watched it over at least four times. I don't really get attached to dramas, but this is one of the few that I'd actually go back and rewatch.

My first Kdrama love had to be I'm Sorry, I Love You back when I was still in middle school. Damn that was such a long time ago.. In that drama I was introduced to the hotness of So Ji Sub~ and the over dramatic-ness of Korean dramas~

The drama that threw me over the edge of the K-drama bottomless pit, from which I have no hopes of escaping was: Stairway To Heaven.

Yes the tearjerker, the cliché of all clichés, the one where no matter how much the couple sacrifice, no matter how many problems they scale, true love prevails for only a little while before it's grabbed, jerked away from them, leaving them and us weeping a waterfall of tears.

Since then I've moved on to prefer rom-coms, and light fluffy dramas, but when I need a good crying fix, I usually fall back on this drama... so far I think I've watched it four time all the way through.

First Loves are never forgotten, no matter how much we believe we've gotten over them, a fleeting moment will bring it back in all it's nostalgic glory.

Well...
Hana Yori Dango was my first drama -ever. Granted, it was a jdrama, but it was the one that introduced me to this world of fun. My first kdrama was Goong -and I hated it. I hated kdramas for the longest time, actually. I wasnt use to the language, and I found them to be quite draggy -especially when I was use to the 9-to-11-episode-straight-to-the-point-fast-pace that Jdramas gave me. It wasn`t until coffee prince that really won me over. I got use to the language, and the style of it (Jdramas also seem to be overly animated, and I was use to that), and now I cant seem to go back to the land of jdramas. Haha. Anyway. Congrats for making it to 5 years! I love what you guys do with this site, and spreading the awesome and more sane side of the drama fandom. Haha. LOVE YALL XOXO

My Name is Kim Sam Soon.

The first ever Korean drama that I watched which I didn't even know was Korean because I was watching it in dubbed Cantonese. But my goodness was it good and definitely took me to the dark side. Although adjusting to the constant (and what I deemed very unusual back then) scenes in the bathroom was a rather new and interesting. And it was also the first time when both me and my mum found the same drama guy HOT aka Hyun Bin :)

the first Korean series that I saw was Thank You, Life, which sadly, I did not get to see the end because the cable went out. But that's not the drama that got me into Korean dramas. The one that got me hooked was You're Beautiful. I did enjoy the series but wished there weren't so many odd outfits on the lead actor. the pigrabbit is instill in my mind. when I see rabbits, I'll think of the show.

happy 5-year anniversary. hope great and beautiful things will come for the dramabeans team. happy new years!

I thought she was CRAZY! ....that was until...I came to the dark side MUHAHAHAHAHA >:)

I watched in again a year later with my MOM!! (I come from a non-asian background, so it is awesome that I got my mom into it)

Strangely enough I found k-dramas for the first time on Hulu about a year and a half ago. On the home page they had an ad to watch Personal Preference so I checked it out. That was the beginning of my love for Lee Min Ho and my search for my k-dramas. I watched some more on Hulu but back then the offerings were sparse so I looked for more sites. I eventually found Viki where I began watching more and more. This lead to Playful Kiss - the drama that brought me to the dark side. It was the first drama I ever watched as it aired, staying up late to watch as soon as the subbed version was out. I thought about, talked about it, and through my love found blogs that were dedicated to k-dramas (which is how I eventually found this site!). Since Playful Kiss ended I have watched hundreds of other dramas, both old, new, and currently airing. I have also expanded to watching japanese, taiwanese, and chinese dramas and movies. I read two blogs daily and others periodically. I even got another one of my friends into dramas as well. I still don't know a word of Korean, (or Japanese, or really any other language besides English) but I still enjoy my dramas immensely. lPlayful Kiss was probably not the best written, best acted, or best directed drama I've seen, but it will always have a place in my heart.

my first dramas were Winter Sonata and Autumn in my Heart, but the one that got me hooked was Glass Slippers.

I think i was about 8 years old when i first saw it and i always wanted to watch it. I fell in love with So Jisub of course :) I honestly don't know why i thought it was so amazing, i just did. I remember the time i ried the most was when the dad got hit by the truck? and So Jisub got stabbed.

Now when i think back about it, i feel like it's the only drama i've seen that the main female character goes with the side male character. Since So Jisub was always wooing her but she didn't like him at the start. She ends up being with him instead of the other guy / the other guy was ehh. HAHA

:)

Happy 5 years !

My first Kdrama was Autumn in my Heart.

But my first Kdrama love was Boys Over Flowers. Though I loved Autumn in my Heart, I was only a kid back then... It was Boys Over Flowers that made me into the Kdrama addict that I am today.

After the 1st generation of Kpop (H.O.T, SES, Fin K.L, Baby VOX, *Shinhwa's youth*) I drifted far far away from the Kpop culture... Of course I watched the occasional kdrama recommendations, (Sad Love Story, Wonderful Life, What Star Are You From.) but it wasn't til 2010, when my cousin recommended my little sister watch Boys Over Flowers and let my sister borrow her dvd set. I just happened to watch because it was the Summer and I had nothing better to do.

It was Boys Over Flowers that led me to Dramabeans. After watching, I just had to google and youtube EVERYTHING Boys Over Flowers. I know that alot of people don't like BOF, and that there are flaws in the drama. But every time I watch it, it has this way of sucking me in and making me fall in love with it all over again. It had everything I wanted in life, loving siblings like Junpyo and Junhee, friends for life who has each
other's backs no matter what like the F4s, Junpyo Lol. Also, I could really relate to the sense of growing up in the drama and first loves....

My mom started watching dramas ages ago, so I've technically been watching dramas almost my whole life (I'm a high school student. Heh.) When my mom stopped watching (sob), I stopped too. Then while being obsessed with K-pop, I picked up MGIAF randomly. Fell in love, researched about it, found Dramabeans....and it pulled me over to the dark side (again!)

My first Kdrama love had to be "Autumn in my Heart". The thing was, I DIDN'T even watched it in english sub titles! It was dubbed into my own language! and I was hook with WON BIN and was ROOTING for him the whole way!! Beside that, after watching the drama, I found out that, it wasn't the complete ending! nor was it the full drama! APPARENTLY they cut and choose scene they wanted (that choppiness made sense after finding out that it was cut and paste!) and the ending wasn't a complete ending! (in my version, they were both still alive!)... I sure did felt cheated! So I researched, google and found kdrama sites and where you can watch with ENGLISH SUBTITLES! there was a GOD! and re-watched it in its full version! and *whew* was a teary jerky!!! definitely left a mark in my heart forever! and learning it in its full entirely sure turned me into a kdrama and kpop fan, even at my age of flirty _ _'s! hahaha

I really like this question, because I remember the time I despised people watching K dramas. Then one day after coming home from school, with nothing to do, I turned on the TV. While I was looking for a channel to watch, I saw this drama Full House by Song Hye Gyo and Rain in a local television network. I checked it out to see why people are so crazy about it. After watching that, I've been hooked ever since, not just with that drama but with everything that involved Korean dramas. I was even the one responsible for making my mom addicted to Korean dramas too! Haha!

My first drama love would have to be the Japanese version of Boys Over Flowers. I remember reading the manga and crying my eyes out. I loved the way the drama and the manga were hand in hand and the acting was legit.

My first Korean Drama love was Shinning Inheritance. After watching J-drama version of BOF, i looked around and ended up watching Full House and Coffee Prince. I think I enjoyed them because I was new to them and curious. I tried watching them again, and I realized I didn't like them as much as I did the first time I watched them.

Shinning Inheritance was amazing though! That was where I discovered Lee Seung Gi, my first Korean celebrity crush ever, lol! Not only that, I thought the story was amazing and everybody's acting was just as great. I re-watched it, and I still loved it a billion times more. I suggested it to all my friends too.
