Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

*sigh*
My first drama was Boys over Flowers as well, just as others said and I was hooked immediately. (But I must say that I got there because of some korean movies I watched, e.g. Seducing Mr. Perfect.)

Oooooooh. My first drama ever was My Girl. Now that I look back to it, it's full of so many kdrama cliches, but when I first watched it it was fresh and new to my virgin eyes. ;D What? Grandpa doesn't approve? Separated forever? Noooo!

I don't like it so much now (maybe my tastes have grown, or I just got sick of the same tropes played over and over again) but it has a special place in my heart, since it got me hooked.

I'd have to say that the first Kdrama that got me hooked on dramas would have to be 1% of Anything. While it is not my favorite drama it really amazed me how different they were from the Mexican Soap Operas I'm used to and hate. This drama was then followed by Coffee Prince and more recently by You're Beautiful both which are one of my favorite dramas!! Of course there have been countless other drama that I have watched between those dramas and then some but those three will always be dear to me for bringing me in deeper into the world of Kdramas each time.

Congrats on your 5th year!!!!!

I fell in love with Dal Ja's Spring! It's so quirky and bubbly and cute, and smart in terms of character and relationships, and also just *different* from anything I'd seen before. It focussed on the relationship and the main character in a way I had never seen in a Western series, or a Japanese one either.

I loved all of the characters, and I loved the main couple, and I still love the drama today.

You're Beautiful! My first and favorite drama! Though I've been addicted to many since, none have recaptured the magic of that first time, possibly because I wasn't used to the style and wasn't as familiar with the tropes yet. Plus the growth of the relationship between Go Minam and Hwang Taekyung is just so compelling. You love all the characters and they each have their own arc. Plus the OST is great.

This is the show I recommend to all my friends but they just scoff at the premise...fools... :P

My Drama First Love was Taiwanese drama, "Romantic Princess." Ever since then, I couldn't stop! But my Korean Drama First Love would have to be "Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang". It was an adorable drama that turned me into a obsessed korean drama fangirl. =P

My very first drama was introduced to me by my friend. She got me into Meteor Garden, the Taiwanese version of Boys Over Flowers.

The very same friend convinced me to try the Korean version, BOF, and though I was very skeptical and told myself I'd only watch the 1st ep just for kicks, I was hooked.

forever hooked to Kdramas.

Fullhouse was definitely my first love! I loved the story and how it made me care so much for the characters and their struggles. After the first encounter, it was love at first sight! I've been watching k-dramas ever since (six years and counting....). I heart k-dramas! Happy 5th Anniversary Dramabeans!!!

Full House - I didn't even know online streaming existed at the time, and I was too intimidated to go to the korean grocery store to rent a kdrama b/c my korean is atrocious... so late one night, i was websurfing, and on a whim, i bought a boxed set of Full House on ebay - not the most economical thing to do... then my old roommate introduced me to mysoju.com, where i watched BOF, and then the true addiction started.

You're beautiful--it was a transition from anime to manga to kpop to kdramas.
I friend of mine stumbled upon it and starting talking to me about it & I was so intrigued of course I had to watch it myself.
And of course I got done before her even though I started when she was on episode 8.
Shin Woo's story totally won me over initially but once I started watching the drama the quirkiness, the humor, (the beautiful people! :O) won me over completely!
American dramas don't compare at all (IMO)

So yes Go Mi Nam, Hwang, Shin Woo Oppa, Jeremy & the Hong sisters lulled me into the dark side with their amusing show You're beautiful

I was sick with the flu when my daughter changed the channel of our non-cable TV to a dubbed version of Hana Yori Dango. The plot was classic rich boy poor girl but she did kick his butt! Girl power! I got hooked and never looked back. Now I lurk at your site and comment occassionally...

Thank you for providing a venue for my ranting and raving of dramas.

Well, I got into dramas because of the Anime club in high school. I was like I want to see if I could find Japanese R&B music. Well, I wasn't having too much luck with that. Just a name or two came up. Well, after I graduated from high school and moved, the Summer before college started I was reading a magazine and found out about Youtube. Well, I started searching some more and came across a dance video that included different music videos. I wrote down the names I could read and started searching. I found out about Se7en and what not. And somehow I end up finding out about Love Letter. I started watching it. And Hwan Hee from Fly To The Sky was in some of them. I would read the comments on Youtube. And I found out he was in a drama. I was like I got to check it out. The drama he was in was Over The Rainbow. I am talking about the drama not the movie. It was the first Asian drama I had seen.

Over The Rainbow is a drama about people wanting to make it in the singing and dancing entertainment. I am not good with names. But, this dude fell in love with this girl, who left home to become a singer. The problem was she couldn't sing. She could dance though. He was interested in dancing and when he saw her moves, he was in love. I think because of her he got out of the gang he was in.

They both ended up in the same company. The problem is she fell in love with Hwan Hee's character. Even though she was with the other dude. The other dude was in a dance group and end up dancing for the dude his girlfriend was falling in love with. Hwan Hee's character didn't even want her. It was just a game to see if he could get her.

The other girl comes in because she is a fan of Hwan Hee's character. He is a singer in this drama. She gets accidentally ran over by his car I think. His entertainment company didn't want no scandal. And somehow she ends up as a trainee in his company. But, she has to be on the dude I was talking about at the very beginning dance team. She really didn't have a dancing talent. So, Hwan Hee's character doesn't treat her right and neither is the other dude.

The other dude, he is starting to see his girlfriend wants to break up with him, which she does. He ends up falling for the girl who had to join his dance team. Hwan Hee's character ends up falling for the girl who joined the dance team.

After I watched that drama, I was hooked into Asian dramas. And since it was my first Asian drama, I did buy it a few years after I had seen it.

My first offical Kdrama was boys over Flowers and that made me an eternal fan of Lee Min Ho. However, I didnt start watching Kdramas on a regular basis (by which I mean every minute of every hour of every day) till Youre beautiful. That had me hooked, line and sinker.
Kdramas have done so much to me, and for me over the past few years. They have made me a worshipper of Bromance (ah thank you SungKyunKwan) for one. They have unearthed emotions I never knew I had (oh the tears! oh the drama! Oh the noble-idiocity of it all). And so much more. I am forever in love with Kdramas. And I owe alot of it to this fabulous website!

My first drama love is still my favorite drama of all time. Coffee Prince. I fell in love with this drama on a personal level because of the gay tones of the drama. I first came across this drama when I was coming to out to myself as gay and for a drama to be so light and relaxed with the way it approached the possibility of the characters questioning their sexuality really suck with me. It let me think about my own in a very simple matter.

I'm actually going to go and watch it again because I haven't seen it since the summer. >.<

Delightful Girl Chun-hyang.

This drama rocked my world when it came out. It was THE drama that gave me awesome leads + fun story + permanent giggles.

After that, watching k-dramas became an addiction that probably therapy cannot even heal. It's practically a disease T_T. But one I do not want to get rid of :P

My first ever taste of k-drama was the long series Dae Jang Guem. I fell with the series and my journey to the dark side started. The drama was aired in one of the prominent stations in the Phils and was dubbed into Filipino. However I find it lacking in real emotion so I decided to contact my long lost friend in Korea (really long lost since its been 10 yrs since I last talk to him lol ) to buy me the original CD's with english subtitle. If I remembered it correctly I spent a fortune for the shipping and box set itself because it cost a ton. Several years later now Im in the US and my thirst for k-drama has never subsided. I'm one of the crazy, avid readers of this site... checking it out multiple times in a day to check if your recap of the latest drama is already out. Midnight in the eastcoast is the best time to check for it. ;) I always scold myself that I should stop spending so much time and money in following all the latest dramas even buying original DVD versions but alas its too difficult to stop. Once your hooked your a goner.

My first drama was You're Beautiful but it was Coffee Prince that really hooked me. One day, I was talking to a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in quite a while and suddenly Coffee Prince came up in the conversation. We were both thrilled to find someone who had not only seen the drama but had also loved it!

The first drama that I fell in love with was Coffee Prince. There were dramas before, but we weren't right for each other or maybe the timing was off. Then, Coffee Prince came into my life. It wasn't love at first site, in fact, one of my first thoughts were "Ew, I'm never eating jajangmyeon in my life. " As time went on, I discovered Coffee Prince's charm and I really enjoyed myself. Then, I fell in love and I remember the exact moment I did too. The Alien Confession. I mean, that moment was magic. I was hooked. I was in love. I was never the same again.

My first ever kdrama was Boys Over Flowers. It was showing on our local Asian channel, I was flipping channels and happened to land on it and it was love :D Despite the craziness of the plot and the so-so acting, it captured my interest and got me looking into more of them (after BOF, I started Goong and Shining Inheritance).

Boys Over Flowers was my first drama! I randomly stumbled upon it somehow and it was love at first sight... with Lee Min Ho. I remember seeing his picture, clicking it because I thought him to be attractive, and then I was brought to a page talking about him starring in BOF. Out of curiosity I started to watch it and I was hooked. Then I moved on to Coffee Prince, another classic, and then Full House, and so on. BOF is definitely the gateway drug of K-dramaland.

Full House. It also made me fall in love with Rain. In retrospect out of all the dramas I've sat through it doesn't rank very highly but it will always have a place in my heart for being the first to capture my interest while giving me my first taste of many a tired cliche. It had a great soundtrack too.

The very first drama that got me hooked was the Successful Story of a Bright Girl. I remember it was dubbed in tagalog/filipino and was shown every afternoon here in the Philippines. It was way, way back when I was in high school. It was funny and Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk had great chemistry. After that I started watching kdramas in KBS and Arirang cable channels. :)

I was in my second year in college and I worked with this hapa who was randomly into Kdramas. He hounded me every time we worked together to check out a drama called "The Snow Queen." I told him it sounded lame, and that I am through with watching dramas because my only prior history was with TVB dramas which are so awful.
Then one day at work, I relented (mainly because he is pretty darn cute) and I checked it out on youtube. My first introduction to a Kdrama and to Hyun Bin was Snow Queen. It was so dark, sad and angsty but I simply wanted MORE.

Since then, I have been hooked and I branched out to Mainland, Japan and Taiwanese dramas. To this day I blame him for sleepless nights, and picking dramas over studying in the library.

I was introduced into dramaland by a friend addicted (like me) to another wonderful korean thing, modern bjd :D

My first drama love is probably "The Legend/The Four of Gods." I have watched some Korean dramas earlier in the past, but never really invested watching it to the end (got either too boring, complicated, or too long). "The Legend" was probably my very first drama that I watched from beginning 'til the end. This drama literally had everything from sci-fi, love, adventure, action, and mystery. What more can I ask for? Not only that, but the drama itself was really well written. This drama is definitely by far my favorite (still is) and the only kdrama I can rewatch relentlessly. "The Legend" has definitely started my kdrama addiction...
