Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

My first drama love was Hana Yori Dango, which- I know- isn't Korean, but it was the drama that got me attached to all drama. I began watching it, and thought, "Wow, these actors are incredible." It was so pure and funny and romantic that I just couldn't help but delve myself into the drama and hold on to it really tightly. I had dreams about it for days and soon enough I was watching tons of other dramas.

Mine is the Jang Nara's classic: Story of a Bright Girl. When this one was aired in the Philippines, I was totally hooked. The story is slice of life and very different than the dramas I have in the Philippines where it is murderous heavy dramas. After that, it just became a second nature to me to watch drama every day off at work. The other dramas that sealed the deal for my addiction are Autumn Tale, Winter Sonata, Kim Sam Soon, Miss Mermaid, and Sassy Girl.

By the way, congratulations on your 5 year anniversary. Javabeans, Girlfriday and the other guest bloggers Thank you for your insights. Sometimes I disagree but it's definitely worth to know your perpective about a drama. And to you website Dramabeans, it is truly a community for Kdrama Addicts and Fanatics.

Wow, the very first one? It's been so long, but the first drama I probably fell in love with would have to Beautiful Days. All the music, family secrets, and mystery singers as well as the cancer victim every drama had to have...it was awesome. Technically, the first drama that drew me in would be Autumn in My Heart. Or maybe it was Pure Heart or Golden Era? I think those were more crushes than love so it's hard to remember which came first. This was all back in grade school so I would have to either get my mom addicted as well or ask my aunt to record each week on videotapes to get my fix. And I only knew one other person also into k-dramas. And now its already 2012!

Definitely My Girl. It was the first drama that had me staying up to the wee hours of the morning and staying home from school just to watch the next episode (or ten).

Happy Anniversary, Dramabeans! This website has definitely become one of my automatic go-to sites when I'm surfing the Internet.

In high school, I had caught a few dramas when they aired on TV, but it wasn't until after sophomore year of college that I was "brought over to the dark side." And that drama was Coffee Prince.

It was just after we had all finished finals and my friend had just been told to watch Coffee Prince, so I decided to join her that night since I had no obligations and what better use did I have with my time? Oh, how little did I know back then... We kept watching episode after episode until 5am when I decided it was high time I should head back to my own dorm and catch a couple hours of sleep before leaving the next morning. I called the safety service so I could get back to my dorm unharmed, but it was just my luck that they never came, and I ended up scrunching myself into a ball on my friend's very short couch for the night. And that was the crazy beginning to my crazy addiction.

However, I have to give credit to Dramabeans for making me a hopefully smarter drama addict, for pointing out good dramas to start next, and for providing me with a cultural background with which to watch these dramas.

My first love was all about eve!! I remember rushing home to catch the show together with the whole family. To date I re-watch the whole drama at least once a year, so I would have probably watched it almost five times or more. Remembering almost every single detail down to the episode, like I could tell u in episode five chae rim playfully pokes jang dong gun's tummy! Hehe. Love this site happy fifth year drama beans!

My first k-drama love was Let's Go to School, Sang Doo (with Bi, Gong Hyo Jin, Lee Dong Gun, Hong Soo Hyun)...and it changed the course of my life forever :D. Before this, I was only into American TV shows; now, it's the complete opposite. I marathoned this over the course of a couple days, during junior year finals week *face palm*. Yeah, bad idea.

Terribly underrated drama, if you ask me. Sure, it's not perfect, but it tugged me at the heart like no other. I had to make sure I had a box of tissues nearby for every single episode past the halfway mark ;_; Gahh, Sang Doo & Eun Hwan..my heart broke for them.

I loved that there was a balance between the melodramatic & light/fluffy moments. Nothing too makjang, like the season dramas. The bad thing is that after this drama, I started to have super high standards for guys. Darn you, K-dramas for giving us false hope.

It was You're Beautiful. It followed the Shoju tamplet exactly. Retreived from Pride and Prejudice and translated into something funny, dramatic and... korean. The horrible music that got stuck on my brain (I will promise you na na na na nananaNA NANA, I will promise you...), the awesomness of THE FANFIC SCENE!!! (I both read and write fanfics, so I died a little) and the wonderful, wonderful bus scene (HongKi, I will never forgive you for Muscle Girl). I was very new to the k-pop world, so I didn't understand any popular culture references, but that just made the intrigue and relationships the more interesting. You're Beautiful is the drama that opened up a new world for me.

Hello dramabeans... first of all HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
ever since i've discovered you, i have been thankful b/c your recaps are usually neutral and help me decide whether I should watch a certain show or not.. My kdrama addiction started back in gr 9 when I told my sister I was bored and it was during the march break.. my sister and I watched BOYS OVER FLOWERS and around 3 o'clock she told me to go to sleep.. however , i sneaked on the computer and ended up finishing more than half the episodes.. I ended up sleeping at 5:30am but man, I didn't feel sleepy at all. I kept on thinking about BOF and what would happen next.. I was excited to discover something new, yet sad that I hadn't discovered sooner.. I am in gr 10 right now and my I am obssessed with both kdramas and kpop.. I have watched over 100 kdramas (nothing compared to how many you guys have watched) and my addiction is no where near a start.. to conclude my addiction was BOYS OVER FLOWERS.. and honestly i have watched that show over 8 times .. Thanks for the reviews and Happy New Year to You TOO :)

You're Beautiful as it happens! It was both the first KDrama I watched and the first I fell (deeply) in love with. I remember seeing a fan video for it on YouTube and watched it because I loved the song and as the video went on I went through ALL TEH EMOTIONS and by the end I felt warm and fluffy inside and was squeeing all over the place, I STALKED that show down and discovered KDrama AND THIS WHOLE UNIVERSE OF KDRAMA AND IT WAS MAGICAL (and watched something like 9 in two months).

It is almost exactly a year since I watched it and I'm practically keeping the date as Mine and KDramas Anniversary <3 Even though I've watched SO. MANY. I have to say that You're Beautiful is still my first love and my favourite and Jang Geun Suk is my husband AND HE WILL ACCEPT THAT (one day).

I can't decide which one made me want to watch more, considering I watched them around the same time.

Both Goong and You're Beautiful are probably the two dramas that made me want to watch more. Though, if I was to pick out of the two that 'introduced' me to the drama would, it would be Goong. I read the manhwa of Goong and loved it; then found out about the drama. I watched that and was hooked. I immediately started with You're Beautiful and decided that this was something to stick with. (It also helps that several of my friends already were hooked and could lead me to the right sites. //cough)

Then I went to watch Boys Over Flowers and Shinning Inheritance and started to search for more...

Happy Birthday Dramabeans! My first love dramas are Coffee Prince and My Lovely Sam-Soon (back in 2009), although technically my very first drama was Boys Before Flowers. It's not along span of drama watching but in a sense I can't remember a time I didn't watch dramas now.

Looking forward to recaps and updates of the new crop of dramas 2012! I hope to see more movie reviews and hear those podcasts too. :)

The only time I entered something like this was for another You're Beautiful from Koko Living....didn't win. Lots more entries here to compete with. =P I watched bits and pieces of dramas with my parents when I was young but didn't actually watch fully until Son's Woman. http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_Girl_of_My_Son
My father has a tendency of falling asleep with videos running and I used to get up early in the morning before everyone. I caught the tail end of this one and I was hooked. It was such a crazy drama with big names in it. After that day I would get up early and rewind while my father slept to watch for myself. Kim Min Jong was so cute and sad and I hated Kim Sang Joong (City Hunter mad dad for those who don't know) because of his character taking away KMJ's crush...love KSJ now though.

This was a good questions b/c I had to dig into my past to remember what got me addicted to Kdrama. At the time I didn't watch Kdrama online, but begging to go to California to buy the dvds there. The subtitles weren't very great during those times either.

My Sassy Girl. :)

I just love watching a good love story. Romcom's are my favs!!

Fell in love with the whole deal after that show. I discovered kdramas almost a year after it first aired and watched it before i knew anything about anything.
Hwang Tae Kyung was awesome. I had only come across people like him in Mangas and to see such a beloved character trope fleshed out was awesome.
I visit your blog at least twice a day and its awesome to see all the lurkers come out on this thread.
Congrats on your fifth year.

For me it started with a (kiss - joking :D) "My 19 Year old sister in law". Although the chemistry between Jung Da Bin (RIP) and Yoon Kye Sang's characters were more like best friends rather than lovers but this drama will always hold a special place in my heart.

My first Korean drama will be "First Love" (1996), when I was only 5 years old LOL, also when Bae Yong Jun hadn't turned into such an old man and Lee Seung Yun and Choi Ji Woo had just started their queen era and not mention when Song Hye Kyo and Cha Tae Hyun were still rookies playing friends of friends of the main character.

The drama was fascinating to watch. Years later, I had chance to watch it again and still so love it! The scenes were so passionate and the performances of the actors were satisfying. I love it! Most importantly, it brought the whole K-drama land to my life and till now, K-drama has always a little but lovely part of my life.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY DRAMABEANS! I wish you all the best and thank you so much for spreading the K-drama love all over the world! Love you! :x

However, I was not aware of the awesomeness of kdrama paradise until Boys Before Flowers got me addicted with its hotness. BBF was my first love, which had me swooning over flower boys and loving this nonstop addiction!^^

Are we talking strictly Korean or in general? Because then I've got two answers.

In grade 6, I went back to China for the summer, and I had nothing to do so my aunt would rent me DVDs of dramas to watch. There, I was mesmerized by the charms of Meteor Garden, which was the first time I'd been introduced to the unique (at the time) storyline, and I've always been one for plot. I also thought it was pretty cool that barbie xu shared my last name.
Now, it's definitely not my favourite adaptation, I hesitantly nominate Boys Over Flowers for the worst. Hesitantly because this is a Korean drama site, and I don't know why but BOF is ridiculously popular. In my opinion, BOF deviates unnecessariliy from the original storyline and draws the love 'triangle' out so far that the lines actually break, and they have to connect the sides again with sticky tack.
I like the Japanese one the best just because it's shortest, with less fanfare and drama. I feel like it lets the storyline carry the drama, and the storyline in itself is strong.

My first Korean drama was Full House. I think I also watched this that same summer in China. My aunt was a big fan, but I had to watch the Chinese dubbed version. I hate dubs. Also, my Chinese back then wasn't very good so I didn't understand it that well. So, I went back to Canada, and my friends got caught up in the craze. Then I discovered the internet and how you could watch things online. And I was hooked. I had enough sense to question Rain's outfits even back then, but I loved Song Hye Kyo. I thought she was gorgeous.

My first REAL drama love was Devil Beside You. Mike He was GORGEOUS to my 12 year old eyes. I wanted to marry him. Travel to taiwan and mad creep him.

My first drama was BOF, which I still love despite knowing what a terrible drama it is, but Shining Inheritance is what got me hooked. Han Hyo Joo was adorable and I love me a little angst. But honestly, the main draw-in for me is that Lee Seung Gi is irresistible.

So basically I'm in it for the boys (and who wouldn't be).

Park Shi Hoo, Lee Min Ho, Yoon Kye Sang, Jae Hee, and the list goes one. Such a great world.

My first drama love was stairway to heaven... i think isnt the ideal drama to start in dramaland ... oh well if you are fan of tragedies i cant discuss that ... the interesting thing about this is i was only 15 years old (i'm 23 now) how it started i dont know cause one day i was getting ready to go to school and randomly changing channels on my tv and i saw a guy in a car covering his eyes and tons of happy memories he had and then bang! he crushed his car protecting his eyes to give his corneas to his beloved one i was omg tears tears tears... i didnt know the background story is just watched that single scene than made me cried... I mean getting tears of this soul is really hard and one scene of that drama made me cry like a baby.... then i saw the first episodes of winter sonata... thank god some strange thing on my tv that i could watch some channels from venezuela weird thing since i live in Peru xDDD lol ok anyway then both dramas arrive to my national tv station so i cried like a baby knowing about the story and stuff even my parents said that those were tooo depressing how can u watch something so sad.... I starting wondering the same when full house gave another vision of dramaland and here I am reading ur blog every day it's like reading the news... i mean i open the most important newspapers of my country and ur blog... thanks for the news and happy anniversary of course... i will continue reading xDDD dramaland never stops and sometimes it give us nice suprises xD

Boys Before Flowers was my first KDrama. I started off by reading the manga, and then watching the Japanese version, which I fell in love with. I heard there was going to be a Korean version I was excited! I watched with no expectations, but enjoyed myself thoroughly! From then on I haven't been able to stop! My favorite drama thus far is Tamna the Island!

The drama that made me go insane about Korean dramas, Yoon Eun Hye, Song Ji Hyo, and everything about Korea is..... GOONG!!! I stumble upon that drama in youtube (when youtube was just starting and when copyright infringement were not that strict that time) when I was in high school (summer of 2006 to be exact). I fell in love with the story that I did not even bother to read my summer reading for my English class (To Kill A Mockingbird). I just remembered I had to read the book 2 weeks before my class started. I had no other options but to use Sparknotes for it. I've watched it from 7 a.m. and I would finish 11 p.m. At first, it was hard to watch it with English subtitles but after 5 episodes, I got used to it :D I even memorized the OSTs! Oh, just reminiscing about it makes me tear up because that was the start of my devotion for Korean drama! I don't even watch American shows anymore (except for Glee).

Wow, page 28 and we are just Monday...

My addiction started because of youtube, I watched some movies, then some korean movies and then I clicked on something I thought would be a movie as well, but was not. It was a drama. And I couldn't stop watching. The name of the drama was Loveholic.

The first drama (and one of few) I rewatched couple of times and still think is one of the best was My Name Is Kim Sam Soon.

Anyway, happy anniversary and thank you for this amazing blog!!!
