Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

I'm pretty sure it was IRIS. I had just gotten really into TOP (so hot, btw) and wanted to see him act. I googled IRIS and discovered Hulu has a crazy amount of kdramas. The rest is history.

My first ever kdrama, which was also the drama that got me addicted to kdramas, was Dae Jang Geum. One day, my mom was channel surfing and she found a subtitled drama filled with bright colors, palace intrigue, the role of women in medicine, and amazing acting. After watching one episode, she told me about it and I decided to give it a try. The rest is history...

The first drama I fell in love with was Full House cos it's so funny (I even managed to overlook the dead-kiss-finale and sulked only for a while heh). A few years went by and the one that really turned me into the dark side was Coffee Prince.
CP means so much more to me than just a drama cos it introduced me to your site JB and a love for korean indie music. Yup, can't believe u were just starting this site when CP came out and I've been to this site since then! I feel like I'm turning 5 too! I can't tell u enough how this site changed me.
Whatever it is, I'm glad I was a big Gong Yoo/eun hye couple fan then and it made me found ur site!
Happy Anniversary JB! You made my days brighter since then. <3

I just discovered k-drama in July 2011 when I added Boys Over Flowers to my instant viewing queue. Now, because of this site, I know that there is a great deal of diversity and quality in k-drama productions. I found dramabeans when I went on a search for more dramas to watch. Based on javabeans and girlfriday's recommendations, I immediately watched Kim Sam Soon and Coffee Prince. So, while Boys Over Flowers started it all for me. My first loves are the two dramas that led me to all of the greatness I have discovered in the last 6 months.
Happy anniversary! Thanks for this wonderful website!!

I'm new here. I've been watching Kdramas for a whole four months.
I was smitten by Han Hye Jin's beauty, (Saw her in Jejoongwon).
But being gaga over a beauty wasn't what what won me over .
Watching Jewel In The Palace wowed, wooed and won me over.
Like Masterpiece Theater, except better. I hadn't seen anything quite like it before.
Follow that up with Queen Seon Duk. Just as impressive.
Go Hyun Jung's portrayal of Mi Shil is fantastic.
I could go on , but I'm hooked. What else can I say?

MY GIRL :) So I'll always have a special thing for Hong Sister dramas. Basically, it was gold to my sisters and I. We laughed, cried, fell in love with Lee Dong-wook, got the cute ost stuck in our head, anddd laughed even more.
Can you believe it was my grandparents that got me on this kdrama thing? Man, that summer visit pretty much changed the spare hours of my life!
Good times.
Ohh, and Happy New Year javabeans and girlfriday! :)

My first love was Jewel in The Palace. The gorgeous costumes, awesome acting and food porn made me fall head over heels for korean drama.
Now that I've finally bought a flat screen tv , I just finished rewatching it and I've fallen in love all over again.
Anyways, I've watched and bought hundreds of dramas since and I'm on an ongoing quest to convert everyone that comes into my circle, so watch out.
Also, Dramabeans has been an integral part of my kdrama enjoyment and I want to wish you a happy 5th birthday and thanks for sharing the fun and goodies. You're awesome as always.

My first real KDrama Love was ... MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON! :D ... Seriously, I got so hooked! Was able to relate to Sam Soon in so different levels. I would cry, laugh, and would think about the show long after I watched it. I would wake up for work at 6am, then continuously go on about my day doing 'life' stuff, and then arrive home at around 10pm from the commute, and then watch the show until I 4am... Whew! I don't even know how I did that... I remember feeling so grateful finding about the show, finding something I could relate to, providing me with the answers that I needed... I would have my notebook and pen with me everytime I watch it, and I'd write down Samsoon's memorable lines. I would always mull over what Samsoon said, how she tackled her problems, and I always feel emboldened to do the same. Her attitude in love and life is outstanding, and I don't think I would not be as alright as I am today if I have not encountered MNKSS... I never tire of it, and still watch it from time to time. It's really true, what they say, first love never dies. :)

First love--Full house (always will have a soft spot for that one!). I watched it first dubbed in chinese--and started watching it before going on a long trip--so I spent the whole time just thinking and aching to know what happened next. I came home, watched the end and became hooked on dramas ever since. Its been a sweet ride. Just finished City Hunter! Whee! ^^

What Happened in Bali!- I saw the dubbed one on our local channel station but it was just 30 mins per day so it always left me for more. I was in grade school then and it was like I met my first love..I just can't sleep thinking whats gonna happen next, and I kept daydreaming about it. I was so crazy about the drama to the point that I research everything about the actors and drama.Back then, watching online was not yet "in" but I discovered there was a dvd I can get with subtitles worth 299$..I begged my mom for it and I watched it nonstop for 2 days..and then I re-watched the drama so many times I was able to memorize some lines and the plot and even the theme song. JO IN SUNG was my first love kdrama actor (I like the rest of the cast too).then I started to expand... I researched to everything the cast acted on from movies to drama..until I just cant stop watching them until now..its been 9 years...lol

Hello! and thanks for doing such an awesome giveaway! My first drama crush was actually winter sonata which I found by randomly browsing google videos one dark cold night in my freshman year of high school. As shallow as this sounds, I was immediately taken by how beautiful the actors were; particularly bae yong joon and choi ji woo and I was really hooked. However, I could only take so much drama and plot twists before it started seeming a bit weird so I skipped to the last episode to see the happy ending i craved so badly--even if bae yong joon did turn out blind.

My first drama was full house. I had not idea about dramas at that time, my friends told me that they like rain and that drama was the best. It was so funny and with that love-hate relationship it was difficult to miss an episode. I had to watched it in youtube and finished it like in one week. I was like why he can be so cute and mean at the same time. I just loved it!.... Then, I started to watch a love to kill also staring by Rain.

My first drama love was Hotelier; it was airing on the AZN channel (before they closed down) and I was up late that night because I was waiting till 12:30 for Ghost in a Shell to come on on Cartoon Network.
I was just going through the channels looking for something to watch in the meantime and I stopped on AZN for some reason; can't remember why, but next thing I know I'm hooked. I knew I had missed several episodes so I started looking online for a place to catch up. Then, before I knew it, I was watching more and more dramas.

It's definitely You're Beautiful for me. While I've always been a tv & drama watcher since young, YB brought me over to the dark side of drama-watching. For the first time ever, the week never seemed to pass by quickly enough till the next 2 episodes came out. In the meantime, I was just like a drug addict craving for his/her next dose of crack, resorting to desperate means: Spent hours replaying the drama over and over again, swoon about Shinwoo with thousands of others on soompi forums, watching episodes raw and basically attempting to get my hands on anything about the drama & its cast...
Which eventually led me to Dramabeans in my desperation to figure out what the characters were saying since I can't understand Korean. Here was a 2nd home for fellow drama addicts to rave about & update each other about dramas.
That was in 2009. This first love has blossomed into a love for k-dramas & k-pop, and thanks to Hongki & Yonghwa from YB, I'm now a hardcore Primadonna & Boice as well as ''k-drama queen'', spreading the love of all things korean to my friends!
Once again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DRAMABEANS! Here's to many more good years of dramas to come =D

My first Drama Love was Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I didn't watch dramas before that. I saw an article about JYJ in yahoo.com and I googled the group's name to know more about them. That led me to SKKS and oh boy, it was all so new to me, as I am from Puerto Rico, everything from the costumes, the language, etc. fascinated me. And obviously the story was wonderful and I fell in love with the characters, specially with Moon Jae Shin and his mane of glory :D I marathoned to watch it and although the ending wasn't the greatest, I will always love this drama because it introduced me to Korean dramas and Korean culture. Oh, and I found this wonderful blog as well! It amazes me how popular Kdramas are in Latin America and now dramas like My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Goong and Boys Before Flowers have been transmitted in local TV. Now my sisters love Korean dramas too and I've met many people who like them. So that's my first Drama Love Story :)

Beautiful Life starring LBH and CJW.
I caught an episode of it on TV just before I flew to the States to begin my undergrad. I kept thinking about it so when a senior was going back to our home country for the winter break, I gave him 50 dollars.
"Buy me a box set of Beautiful Life, a korean series."
"Why don't you get Winter Sonata too?" he asked.
"Winter Sonata? What's that?" Never heard of it.
"What?? You don't know Winter Sonata? It's all the rave now!"
"OK. Get me that one too then!"
So, yeah. And that was ages ago. I feel old. haha.

Correction! It should be "Beautiful Days". Sigh...
See, that goes to show how ancient that memory is and how old I am. People say it's hard to forget first love, true, but trust me, it got muddled over time. Life goes on and you found new love along the way. But yeah, it will always have a soft spot in your heart somewhere and at the back of your mind.

My Asian Movie/Drama interest started years ago with Chinese Movies, then continued with a long stint in Bollywood. About a year ago, waiting for my next movie to come in the mail, I was looking for something different to watch and came across My Princess on Hulu. My interest has turned into an obsession, and I have watched enough Korean Dramas that my kids have taken to calling me Omma. Not really funny until they holler it out in the grocery store in my small (pop. 450) midwestern USA town.

I actually became familiar with korean drama after a friend had me watch the movie Daisy (Jeon Ji Hyun and Jung Woo Sung). I remember crying buckets but still being so satisfied with the story and feel of the whole thing.
That same friend and I actively sought out more korean movies until one day we said 'hey why don't we watch this tv series that everyone is raving about!' - and so the first drama we watched was, predictably, Boys Before Flowers. (I recall another friend referring to it as a korean gossip girl haha).
Since then - almost 3 years ago now - I've watched more than a few dramas and found many favourites and a few duds along the way!

My Drama First Love would definitely be You're Beautiful! Gahhh ... it's still one of my favorite rom-coms. It was actually my first Korean drama. I mostly watched Hong Kong dramas before then, but then my friend recommended You're Beautiful to me. That drama hooked me heart and soul. Everything I did reminded me of You're Beautiful. In February, my husband went away to England for a month for work... I decided to watch the Korean dramas my youth were always raving about. Secret Garden was the first drama I watched... and since then it's been over 50. The moment I knew HB was going to take her out in the rain... I was so choked up... I loved this drama so much -- with all the body swapping, the sparkly track suit.... Two more loves have been Coffee Prince (best music) and Personal Pref.

Oh wow... The first drama I actually fell in love with was Hana Yori Dango. I found it on accident while I was looking for some anime. I just thought WOW.. this is like watching Anime with real people, and it's hilarious because you can connect better with them. So after I finished that series I started looking for other ones. I actually didn't find Korean Dramas until about 5 months into my addiction. I had seen a couple Japanese... Girl dresses as boy.. dramas, so when I saw the ad for Coffee Prince, I was like.. sure! I don't care if it's in another language. Coffee Prince sold me on Korean drama.. I feel in love with Gong Yoo and Yoon Eun-hye, I also preferred the Korean culture. Now it has been about 5-6 years with my addiction and I am planning to move to South Korea on a teaching internship as soon as I finish getting my degree.
Congrats on hitting 5 years guys! I always look to this website for my recaps and recommendations for my next drama.

Okay, so if I think back... waaaaaaay back...
It was All About Eve in 2000. That was really the drama that kicked it off. I loved the poppy OST, the petty revenges. I enjoyed hating Kim So Yeon and relishing her downfall. I guess that drama really showed me the world to K-drama and its magnificent emotional rollercoaster.
Also, I found that after K-drama was introduced into my life, my TV/laptop screen can sustain more screaming, crying and screen-banging than I originally thought.
Happy Birthday, Dramabeans! Don't worry, you still look three - must be the facelifts ;)

My first drama love wasn't actually what is expected. It wasn't a smash hit or even a big drama. It didn't have an explosive cast or any shower scenes. I was living in a predominantly Korean neighborhood in LA and I came across KBS on the TV and tuned into a drama called "Sunok". Oh, it was melodramatic, with at-birth switches, revenge, and the oh-so familiar female heroine who sacrifices anything and everything. I LOVED IT. It had everything I wasn't finding with TV those days and since then, I haven't looked back. Sunok will always be my first love, my first drama.
