Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

My first love AND first drama was Coffee Prince! It was translated in my maternal language and everybody went crazy when it first started. No wonder, I fell head over heels for my first love and became a proud addict of the kdrama world.

My first ever drama was Neukkim- granted I was quite young so i wasn't technically 'in love' or 'addicted'- but it was the first one that got me interested in dramas.
I already knew enough Korean to watch it raw making it more magical and memorable.
I remember me and my mom would push the stool that stood in front of the computer and move our ratty old couch in its place and we would watch it wide-eyed with bated breath.
My mom had me when she was a teenager so she had to stay in a lot (she split with my dad before I was born). She had a lot of Korean friends who watched dramas and they would encourage my growing obsession.
They would teach me Korean and would exchange swears and cusses (my mom would usually make them leave at that point) - So I grew up with Korean culture and dramas.
My first ever 'love' would probably be Delightful girl Chun-hyang- I re-watched it about 30 times.
It was bright, funny and had the most adorable characters- I fell in love with everyone.
What bought me to Dramabeans however was recent music-centered drama- Dream high.
I fell in love with Kim soo hyun and his boyish dreams and innocent smile I had to find out more about him. I googled him and an interview with him came up on dramabeans.
I then discovered the recaps and the erest is as they say history.

You're Beautiful!! :)
It was amazing!!! From comedy to romance, it had everything in it!!! My friend was so interested in dramas, I wondered what was so good about them, so I asked her for some recommendations and she said "YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!!!" On the first episode, I was hooked :) I can't stop watching the drama, I've watched it at least once a month!! I loved the cast, plot and scenery!!! I just wished Go Mi Nam ended up with Shin Woo ^^
HANDS DOWN MY FAV DRAMA :)

it all started in early 2004 (months before the great Soompi crash):
the first k-drama i watched was Autumn Love Story - loved the OST. loved won bin. and then the face incest storyline kicked in. now since this was my first ever korean drama - i didn't know fakecest was a crucial k-drama element at the time - so i was repulsed and dropped it.
then someone recommended me, Beautiful Days. i thought the beginning was boring and too melodramatic but everything changed when i saw Lee Byung Hun. it wasn't exactly love at first sight. i used to ask "who is this korean guy with Meet Joe Black hair?" but the more i watched it, the more i fell in love with him and Choi Ji Woo's characters (okay it was more of Lee Byung Hun's!). That scene when LBH's Minchul broke down in the shower? Ack, broke my heart.
By the end, i knew that i was hooked and have completely gotten myself into the dark (cause i like watching 'em dramas with all lights out) and i have never looked back.

My first drama that got me hooked until today is Princess Hours (Goong)! The sweet romance in the historical setting, coupled with the fantastic chemistry between Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon is so unforgettable even up till now. I can still remember all the sweet scenes. Needless to say, I have became a huge fan of Yoon Eun Hye since Princess Hours. I have watched all of her dramas by far.

i'd like to make-believe that sassy girl chun hyang's my first drama love, please? :3
total first love would be AUTUMN IN MY HEART! ;DDD
even watching it for the first time, i loved won bin, lol. the 2nd hero running after the heroine is just so adorable to watch at. i think he emoted better than song seung hyun too even back then. plus he smoked lol (!!!!!!)
best part of the drama, the one scene that i still remember even right now, after almost ten years, is when song hye gyo fainted while being his maid- he'd just ran to her, picked her up bridal-style, and rushed to the hospital. BEST. SCENE. EVER. i'm a sucker for hospital scenes (yes, call me morbid), and to see him sacrifice so much to be tossed aside... yeah. love it. sobs.
okay i feel old. :/

for me, it's My Name is Kim Sam Soon...how i love kim sun ah and hyun bin's pairing...they are perfect for that drama...i think many women relate to sam soon's character and falling in love with samshik who's younger than her and being loved by him in return, could only be wishful thinking to all ajummas out there, including me :-)...i never tire of watching the drama from time to time ( I have it first from pirated dvds then a box set from hongkong (with bad subtitles) and the last one, i've downloaded from silentregrets.com)...that's how i really love it....:-)

It was 2005 when I started watching Kdramas at our local TV station, I was only 10 yrs. old back then. I did enjoy watching them, but 2009 became the turning point of my Kdrama fondness I fell inlove with Boys Over Flowers!
Four flowers boys are so much to take I really got high!I end up getting mad when I can't watch it online, I beg bending knees for my brother to lend me the computer while crying like a noisy child(hahah!).At school I daydream every freetime or talk about it to my classmates.I even conduct surveys "who is the hottest among the 4?".My mom and dad would scold me for over use of the internet because I repeatedly watch the scenes.I even ended up dragging my classmates to make our video project into a BOF parody(hahah).I'm admitted that I'm obsessed with it!But the great thing about it is I was once afraid to use the computer because I'm quite illiterate at it I don't learn to use gadgets fast but Boys Over Flowers opened the nutshell i'm hiding in, I became creative at using the computer and now I'm confident enough to do complicated commands at it :)
Now, because of the start of my Kdrama tantrums our whole family even enjoys quality time watching Kdramas!

Wow...... first Kdrama? Dang, that was so long ago...
I think it was back in the early 2000s(somewhere around there--can't believe it's been that long!) that I got hooked. I watched a few but the one that I got me sold on Kdrama--the one I remember the most during that time was Full House. The characters was fun, silly and quirky. The bickering which turned to love between the two leads--sweet. It was an awsome drama(introduce me to RAIN--hottie! ^^).
The next one that stayed in mind autumn tale--so bittersweet--cried a river--->made me want to watch more dramas that had a happier ending. =) I knew there's got to be more out there. LOL
I've been doing that, watching dramas no matter if it's Kdramas, Jdramas, Tdramas, Cdramas or Thai lakorns.
Ah, back in them old days. Seem so long ago but feels like it's only yesterday! ^_*

Happy New Year!
I know it was not the most liked--and a contender for most disappointing drama of 2011--but my first drama was Lie to Me. I've been watching Korean dramas ever since(15? since July?). I was hooked with the tomato juice scene, though I will agree it was a little peaceful the last few eps.

My kdrama obsession started with Hotelier (Song Yoon Ah, Bae Yong Joon). It was an excellent drama in terms of acting, plot, OST, etc. I had previously watched taiwanese dramas but there was a lull. My mom was watching Hotelier and after that, I was hooked! My decade long addiction began! Hope 2012 will be an awesome year for kdramas!!

My Drama First Love was Soulmate.
(I don't understand why this was so underrated though.)
Whatever the case this drama got me totally hooked with its fresh storyline, characters and most importantly with its actors. I just liked everything about it and wanted to cry when it finished and the second season was cancelled -.-
But thanks to Soulmate I had the great pleasure to watch other amazing K-dramas troughout the years which led to sleepless nights and other complications, like every K-drama obsessed person.

Something Happened in Bali or in my country known as Memories of Bali. It started with something funny though a bit sad on Kang In-wook part as he had to give up his love to Yong-ju as their are not on the same social status. I never thought they are dare enough to kill all the main characters, but they did it! Sucks!!! I cried! I hate the ending but I watch the drama again and again. Maybe more than five times. Though, honestly I watched till episode 19 and cannot build up enough courage to watch the end (or I'll cry again). If I've been asked for a second choice, I name 'Thank You'. Love the story, characters, ending and love Jang hyuk and Gong Hyo-jin. It makes me think about people deserve second chance and miracle could be anything or comes from anybody even a girl with AIDS could be a miracle for others. Love drama so much!!!

My first drama love would have to be a taiwanese one called "It started with a kiss"
The premise of the show was so unlike any american show I had previously watched that it just caught my attention. Alternatively, the first kdrama I fell in love with was "Full House." Despite the cliched storyline, it was a catalyst for starting my steady kdrama diet.

I got hooked after watching Personal Taste...in marathon, mostly because I was curious and didn't completely understand what was going, but I knew the OTP needed to get together before I even knew what an OTP was. Then I immediately watched Coffee Prince, twice in marathon. Loved it x 1000. I did not know what I was getting myself into. Then I stumbled upon Dramabeans and I saw there was an entire world waiting for me! Muahahaha! :D

Seo Dong's Song / Ballad of Seo Dong was the one that drew me into the dark side. I rushed home everyday after work and all my family we were glued to the TV screen for an hour. Finally I could not stand it anymore and bought all the dvds to watch ahead of my network which was slooow. The romance between Jo Hyun Jae's Prince and Lee Bo Yang's princess, along with the birth secret, scientific discoveries and traitors was just so awesome. However I watched that drama and hated the last 15min. Till this day, I just stop the disc right before the last 15min HAHA.
Happy New Year to all at dramabeans! I wasn't here that long but I totally enjoyed all the wonderful recappers who supplies us with fun and laughter. Congrats on being 5!

The drama that got me into dramaland actually was a Taiwanese one - devil beside you. At the time I had to study for an English test and what's better than procrastinate studying by watching a drama filled with eyecandy? I loved it to pieces and decided to move on to my second drama, this time My Girl. My sister recommended me the dramas lol.
Either way, you could say that the first Korean drama that got me really REALLY hooked was You're Beautiful. I loved Boys Before Flowers too (which I watched before YAB) but looking back, the drama wasn't as entertaining as I felt it was at the moment I was watching it.
You're Beautiful got me hooked. The Hong sisters just created the funniest drama ever - the jokes were so funny I found myself laughing out loud many many times.
You're Beautiful remained for a long time on my no 1 spot though I've watched so many good dramas by now the no 1 spot is a little bit blurry.
Still, I'm stuck in dramaland now and no way I'm leaving any time soon. :'D

I confess, I started watching dramas pretty late (2010 >-<) and my friend introduced me to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (my first Hong Sister's drama!). The first episode had me marathoning the whole entire thing and when it was over a part of me died. The characters were so loveable and their poignant moments tore me apart. Since then, I've been exploring other genres and now i'm a kdrama addict. :D

I feel like I'm betraying my kind by saying that the drama that brought me over to the dark side was My Love Patzzi, but it really was! My love for Kim Jae Won and Kim Rae Won has just not abated since! (Of course I get into kdrama around the time KJW had to go to the military, and then of course KRW went, so I'm just a failboat time-wise all around.) But what happened is a local anime store had decided to start providing DVD box sets of Korean drama, and so they were having an event in-store where they played the first episode (sometimes the first two) of a series of kdrama that they were now selling. My Love Patzzi happened to be the one that was playing when I arrived at the event, and well, it was kind of love-at-first-sight. Admittedly it's no longer among my top 10, but that's purely because seeing that one drama sparked me watching, well, a LOT more!

Then I saw that there was a live action of it and I watched my first ever Kdrama, Boys Over Flowers. Then I started watching all my favorite anime's live actions but by then I was addicted and couldn't stop and I was on the dark side :).
