Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

My first love (not first drama, by far) was Empress Chun Chu. It was so long but I became hopelessly addicted to the characters and the story (I even came up with my own nicknames for some of my favorite characters, heh). And I appreciated learning some ancient Korean history at the same time. It was the first drama in which I was completely invested.

Definitely Coffee Prince; I loved it from the very first episode. Starting from there, it was a downhill spiral into the smashing world of kdramas. ^^

Happy New year ! And congrats for this 5-years blog !

I think Alone in love proves me korean dramas can be much more than they actually are. This is a wonderful, warming story about actual difficulties in everyday-life, with a more sensible and adult approach. I already said in my french blog that dramas can change life, and this was my first experience. The lesson is : happiness is always a work in progress.

My first ever drama was AUTUMN TALE <3 Yes, it's full of the same old drama plotlines, with all those birth secrets and whatnot, but i absolutely loved it. Well, except for the ending. Why the writer chose to off both main leads still remain a mystery to me but anyway back to my main point! :D It opened my eyes to the kdrama world with its plot (no matter how cliche) and well, ssh helped too ^_^ such pretty eye candy mhmmm

Wow look at all those comments!

OK, i think it would have to be My Lovely Kim Sam Soon (and what a suprise to me when i stumbled upon this site and found people that loved it as much as i did). I think it was my third/fourth korean drama ever after errrr.. sweety spy/full house/hello!miss (more than three years ago but at the same time that isn't very long is it? maybe in the middle of 08). It spawned my first kdrama crush Hyun Bin and i think i marathoned most of the episodes. It has remained one of my favourites - it was amusing, touching and it just took me along for the ride emotionally as i stared at eye candy Hyun Bin (one can not help but do such things).

Hello Dramabeans,

My drama first love was the First Shop of Coffee Prince. It was the first Korean drama I watched and I really enjoyed the story, the character and above all the culture. Actually, South Korea was an almost unknown country for me. Through this drama I wanted to know more about South Korea and its culture, that is in a lot of points different from what I know about the Chinese and the Japanese ones (as I am from Asian descent). Since then, I started watching more and more Korean dramas and I am learning more and more things about South Korean and Asian cultures.

Happy Birthday Dramabeans, Happy New Year everyone and keep on giving news about Kdramas !!

Take care,

FRsophiek

Happy 5th Anniversary, Dramabeans!!! May you go on for another 5 years, and another 5, and another...

Winter Sonata was my very very first and it just sucked me into kdramas for life! It was BYJ and CJW and the songs that they kept playing over and over again, and I had no idea there was this amazing world of dramas out there waiting to be watched. It's super dated and draggy now but back then, it was so so great. I still look back on it with fond memories.

First kdrama i watch is Winter Sonata.
I fall in love with Park Yong Ha character. Why? I can't imagined how a person can show despair in every form(his face, his behavior and his role frankly is the most pathetic character in the drama).
Since then i dig more info on all casting.
Finally I know PYH is a singer too.
And I watch Hotelier next with Yonsama as the coldest businessman who actually can fall in love.

From Hotelier i know Shong Hye Kyo.
I watch her again in All In.

Eversince, I watch kdrama until now i even follow OB in streaming (if I can) although i don't understand what they're talking about LOL

The most memorable K-Drama for me was Goong because not only of the story and juicy romance scenes but the ost was really good as well. I love the ending teddy bear scenes! I fell in love with the traditional aspect of the drama because it was just so interesting and different. Maybe this is the reason why I'm so into historical dramas now rather than modern ones. In a way, Goong guided my way back to the past lol xD

My first Korean drama was Autumn in my Heart though I wasn't addicted to it until I watched Hyun Bin and Kim Sun Ah in My Name is Kim Sam Soon..HEHE

I watched it on telly and it was dubbed in Mandarin..But I couldn't wait for the next episode so I bought the DVD set and marathon the show in three days!

This is my first drama love which I can re-watch and never get bored.

Ever since then, I fell hook, line and sinker into the Hallyu wave and DRAMABEANS :D

You're Beautiful.

I was trying to figure out what to do with my life, since America had somehow decided that English degrees were not useful to society, and forgot to tell me before I graduated. I had been considering coming to Korea to teach English. After mentioning it to a friend I hadn't seen in a while, she immediately said, "Oh! You should watch some Korean dramas! Maybe it will help you with the language." She then sent me a link tot he first episode of You're Beautiful on Hulu. I clicked it, not knowing what I was getting into, and I saw... a nun... and oddly dressed pretty boys... and levels of wackiness the likes of which I had never encountered before... and the rest is history. :-D

Many of my friends were addicted to kdramas and had been trying to entice me to join the crowd for years. Since I majored in French, my friends finally managed to coax me into trying "Lovers in Paris." The poor subtitles drove me nuts, but I loved the drama (apart from the ending). I've been watching and subbing ever since.

The first Korean drama I saw was Take Care of the Young Lady. After that I saw YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, that´s when I also fell in love with Korean dramas. I was tired of the Spanish ones that are in the tv - they have the same plot all the time. And the America ones aren't that interesting. From the dramas I also fell in love with the Korean culture, it´s so different from the European one, where I live. Now I am always looking new dramas to watch, after finishing one.

My first love is Stairway to Heaven, it was the first K-drama that had me hooked. I got engrossed with the characters and the story itself. I cried bucket of tears specially when Han Jung suh (Choi Ji woo) was already going blind and she pretended she was not in front of Cha Song joo (Kwon Sang woo), I was really crying so hard. Then the sacrifice of Han Chul Soo/ Han Tae-Hwa (Shin Hyun Joon) of giving up his life so he can give Han Jung suh his eyes, I almost wished that he should have gotten the girl. I am a happy-ending kind of woman, but this K-drama was something I will remember for the rest of my life and made me a k-drama addict.

My first K-drama love? It's none other than All About Eve. The drama that got me spazzing over Jang Dong Gun and Chaerim. LoL, good times. That was more than 10 years ago, I saw AAE on vcd back in 2001, me thinks.

Err that are a lot of comments. Good luck with the draw.

Boys Over Flowers I just started KD in 2010 and my 1st drama was Goong and didn't like it. BOF was what made me do my first drama marathon :-) Didn't even know there was a disease called drama marathoning then.

BOF and the ep 1 scene where they come into the school hall with the light shining behind them...made me crack up big time.

Most of the scenes I thought were over the top and utterly ridiculous but it still didn't stop my from loving it.

Kim Hyun Joong the national sunbae. Kim Bum who was the utter gentleman. That hair who can forget the GJP hair - it was god awful and I spent the whole time saying is that for real?

This was when I realised there was actually this genre called Korean dramas. And learnt the phrase 'fangirling' and 'fan service'.

I had the badly subtitled DVD set. Then bought I thought a better set- but this had the previous scenes' subs on the current sentence. And finally gave up and downloaded the 720p HD version of BoF. Brother , embarrassing admission to make. How many versions does one girls needs @__@

I worried that i might waste time watching this but after the first episode i started laughing and i got infatuated with the drama's plot and characters... that's the time i found a new hobby and started to watch more and more that i spend most of my time watching

Well that's my life story :D

I'm not 100% sure which drama I watched first and fell in love with but I know definitely there was a wonderful drama that I could not stop talking about after watching. This drama is Autumn in My Heart. Even though I was only about 7 or 8, I almost fully understood the whole drama and still remember it to this day. After watching this drama with my whole family, we could not stop watching Korean dramas. Two other 'first loves' of mine are probably Green Rose and Sassy Girl Choonhyang! These dramas have definitely brought me over to the dark side and even though I have watched dramas from other countries like Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan, I will always be watching dramas in Korean.

And congratulations on turning 5, Dramabeans! ♥

my first kdo is winter sonata..
it was during my high school time and winter sonata was the 1st korean drama aired in malaysian tv..

my fav scene was during the characters' high school time when:

1. Yoo-Jin spunkily refused Sang Hyuk's hand when he would like to help Yoo-Jin balances herself as she was walking on a pole/bark of tree

" I am only going to hold the hand of the person i like"

2. Yoo-jin accepted Jun Sang's hand when he did the same offering during one scene at Nam-I island, subconsciously indicating her budding feelings for him..

** i haven't watch winter sonata in ages, pardon me if some of the details are not accurate..

My first drama was Save The Last Dance for me. It was the first drama that started my Korean drama obsession and it was also the drama that f***ed my summer over, literally. I ended up failing my high school finals(just one paper actually lol) and had to resit during the summer. But now I've learnt my lesson and vow to never start a drama till after exams! ;)

Boys Over Flowers!!!
Lee Min Ho pulled me over with his brilliance, and the drama was just really fun and addicting:) I couldn't stop watching, even though I recall that I had a test the next day lol. Seriously, I've only started watching kdramas last November/December, and im in 10th grade. My friends started since 7th grade, but at that time I was trying to veer away from getting addicted because once I love something, it's really hard to let go...which is why I'm still here today spending 3/4 of my sleep invested on dramas haha. Although I guess I'm not completely out of the loop since I've seen taiwanese dramas since I was 5, but now, it's pretty much kdramas all the way, and I'm ready to fly into acting. Maybe I'll be able to go to s. Korea one day and be able to speak and act with Lee Min Ho?

"Full house" !!!
About 5 years ago, I was a first year Japanese major in collage, and was trying to find jdramas to help me practice my listening skills. In a bit of a mix-up, I accidentally obtained "Full House" ....and the rest, as they say, is history. Pretty soon after I discovered Dramabeans and Withs2, and between the two of you....I didn't get much sleep during collage! LOL. It was worth it :).

Comparativel newbie here - Jolly Widows, episode 67 and IRIS, seeing Kim Tae Hee shoot Lee Byung Hun and thinking WTF?! And HOW DOES HE KNOW HER?

Saw them while on holiday and when I returned to England I felt that desperate longing, that craving that needed to be satisfied... the feeling that I am now oh SO familiar with...

And I thought "surely I could watch online? And maybe there's a place people talk about this... addiction?

Which led me here to the home of JB and GF. Congratulations to you both for creating and then growing something that has proven to be so uniquely amazing, you have prompted others to start their own version of this work and that is probably the greatest compliment of all.

Can't believe the number of comments, must be a record?!

As for the dark side, I think the Stone Roses said it best:

"I don't need to sell my soul, He's already in me" !!!

My first kdrama lovefest was with My Name is Kim Sam Soon. It's been a few years since and I haven't been able to ween myself off kdramas. My second love was GOONG and I need to admit they are on my dvr and I can't erase them because every now and then I need to get my Kim Sun Ah or Yoon Eun Hye fix. I have tried to erase them to see if I can over this obsession, but when I have to press delete something goes on in my brain that says "Don't do it, they're like friends, they're aging like fine wine". It's ridiculous but I think it's like a first present you receive when you fall in love. You want to hang on to the memories forever.

Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary!! 

I remember my Dad is the one who introduced us into asian dramas and Autumn in my Heart is the first ever kdrama that I've watched. My Dad, who is a professor, saw the CD's in the Univ. library and thought that it might be worth to try & watch it. I loved how the whole family bonded during those times. The next thing I know, he borrowed the next 3 season series after that and asian dramas are now a part of my family's life. hahaha!

But what really hooked me to kdrama's are Full House, Save the Last Dance for me & Likeable or Not. I know LoN is a very long one with 170+ eps but I totally LOVED that drama! I'm kinda obsessed with it that I even asked my parents to record every ep that I would miss because of school. I even took up korean as 1 of my foreign language requirements. I would say those 3 dramas, especially LoN, keep me sane and helped me survived Nursing school. Until now(12yrs later), the whole family still continues to watch kdramas AND korean variety/entertainment shows. It's funny because we are now more updated with the shows, movies, celebrities, music, etc. and that's because of all the creatives minds who made this incredible, ahhh-mazing website. Thank You!! 

Simple Answer: 1st Shop Coffee Prince.

The more complicated and complete answer:
I had a three phase soul sucker when it comes to dramas.

A.)Youtube: The Beginning
Phase one was commenced in 2006 (while I was in college, the WORST POSSIBLE TIME to become dramacrazy) when I discovered Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (yes, I know, a Japanese show the Korean soul sucking comes later amazingness comes later). It was love at first site with this show for a girl who grew up in the 90s (and I brought my friends all down low with me for this.). This show was my introduction "hurts so good" show but I wasn't crazy when it came to dramas.

B.) Mysoju:The Descent
Then I stumbled upon Mysoju.com (precursor to watched a few other Asian dramas next (no Korean ones) including MARS, Hana Yori Dango, First Kiss, etc. Slowly but surely I was in a downward spiral. However, the friends I have brought with me were worse (skipping days upon days of classes to watch shows).

C.) Dramafever: The Crash and Burn of My Social Life
Then one day in 2009 (while still in college), my friend Mollz, shows me this subtitle-less youtube video from a Korean Drama. It was from Episode 10 of 1st Shop Coffee Prince (and anyone who has seen the show should know the clip). My mind exploded. What was this show, I had to find and watch it?! So I went scouring the internet for this show and like love at first site, I found Dramafever (in it's early stages). I missed a week of classes watching everything I could on there, growling every time my friends wanted to socialize because I was watching a new drama.

And I have never looked back. I have dragged numerous people down the drama road with me (not all of whom have thanked me due to their addiction) and it is all thanks to Coffee Prince.

The first drama I EVER watched was "Goong". A friend recommended it. Before that, I didn't know anything about asian dramas nor had I ever heard Korean being spoken. At first it looked SO WEIRD to me (specially the royal family's traditional clothing). But ultimately I grew to love it and got a huge crush on Yul. -- That was probably 3 or 4 years ago! A couple of months ago I rewatched Goong and my opinion was very different, after watching over 200 dramas since then... it seemed to lose its charm, the acting seemed worse and Yul wasn't enchanting anymore. HAH.

My current favorite Korean drama is "The Snow Queen". In second place is probably "Legend" (Yon-sama's epic drama).

Hana Yori Dangi, the j-dorama. If ever there was a dorama that brought me over to the Asian drama loving community. It was hanadan. I was Jun-baited in the purest form. Inoue Mao and Oguri Shun did not make things any more easier. I was in some sense following the manga and just finished the anime in college, when I realized there was a jdorama for it. Next thing you know I was hunting down the best of the best. Been hooked to dramas ever since. X)

My first drama was Boys Before Flowers. After re-watching it, I don't know how that won me over - it's nothing compared to the other dramas I've watched! But the first time I saw it I was home sick from university and PMS as well.. Watched the full show in one day, and after the final episode I had to go take a shower so that my parents wouldn't question my swollen eyes and dead-like stare when they got home from work. :p
