Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1
by javabeans
javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.
girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!
javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.
girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.
javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.
girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”
javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”
girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.
javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!
girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!
javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?
girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.
javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!
girlfriday: And they get better each week!

My first korean drama was a family drama, I think!
It was THE LAW OF MARRIAGE (MBC, 2001)
I was pretty young when I watched it but man, do I miss that drama...

My first korean drama was Full House, I stumbled upon it randomly ^^and got scared after one episode (the filming was so different, compared to jdramas)and didn't watch the rest until much later.
So, in reality, the first kdrama I've seen completely is Goong and I fell in love with the energy of Yoon Eun Hye :).

All In - starring Lee Byung heon and Song Hye gyo. My family and I watched this drama together when I was beginning high school and it launched me into several years of Korean drama watching...all the way through college, and stimulated me to take Korean during my senior year of college. Now that I've graduated, watching dramas has become a habit for me, something that I need to do in order to relieve stress. It's actually kinda bad...we've all been there where one episode becomes the next...but I've definitely lived a drama before- sometimes I really feel like dramas are parallel to what's going on in my real life. Strange, I know!

I think my first Drama Love would have to be my very first drama - Coffee Prince. Over the years, I've rewatched that drama so many times and honestly, every time I watch it, I fall more in love with it. Coffee Prince even introduced me to the band Azure Ray!

First K-Drama love was Boys over flowers in January 2010. It was my first trip to Seoul and it was bloody freezing cold, so that we stayed in the hotel room instead of any fancy night activities outside. Happened to turn on the tv and tried to understand the drama without knowing any Korean at all. But we hooked up and figured it out what the story was about :) After that I was infected by K-Dramas...

The first Korean drama I watched was 'Endless Love', but the one that brought me over to the dark side was 'Lovers in Paris'..
Like Yoon Soo-hyeok said to Kang Tae-young, "In my heart....there is you."
Yes, you'll always be in my heart forever, Lovers in Paris..^^

Happy Birthday, dramabeans!! I've been following dramabeans for a long time now ^^;;
Anywho, the first kdrama that I really loved/got into was Tomato featuring Kim Heesun & Kim Sukhoon. ^^ It inspired me to want to go into the design profession haha ~ I'll always have a special place in my heart for the fashion/plot/characters of Tomato ^^ (and then follows the usual suspects of my era: Autumn Tale, Stairway to Heaven, etc.)

The first drama that sucked me into the inescapable world filled with trendy teenagers, arrogant chaebols, and kings and queens was the one and only - Dae Jang Geum / Jewel in the Palace.
Now, I have to admit, I had seen other dramas before watching Dae Jang Geum, but none were able to captivate me as well as Lee Young Ae did with her impeccable acting.
Normally, I do not favour historical Sagueks. While beautiful and intense, often or not I am left with a impressed but cold feeling after watching one. However, Dae Jang Geum completely changed my views. The heart of Jang Geum's character and the dramatic situations and relationships shown through the drama were drawing me in further and further with each episode.
Admittedly, the food was also a big part of what made Dae Jang Geum so captivating. Being able to experience another culture through a drama not only made me curious, but eager to immerse myself in a world so different from mine.
It's been what, nine years? since I saw Dae Jang Geum, and to this day it still remains to be my favourite drama of all time. I will never forget the brave Jang Geum's journey through heartache, sabotage, power, and her struggle to find happiness in what I am proud to call my first drama love!

Before I answer, I found this site helpful so thanks to the admins who burned the midnight oil in creating and still developing this wonderful site. Kumawo!!!
to Dramabeans, Saeng-il Chukarimnida.
Then I should proceed with my answer.
Princess Hours or Goong, This drama pushed me to the field of wonderful world of k-drama. Even though i watched several korean dramas before, but this one got me totally hooked. I've repeated this drama for several times. I was totally fascinated of the actors especially with Yoon Eun-Hye. This drama has an original story because if this was a typical story then Song ji-hyo became the heroine. Anyway, It was funny, quirky and sweet with the twist of prince and princess in the present. This drama showed me of the wonderful culture and history of Korea mixed with the present. Then K-drama it is.

GOONG / PRINCESS HOURS!!
It was interesting for me to actually get introduced this drama by my friend. I didn't know a lot about South Korea at all at the time. I always had a thing for families of monarchies (maybe it stemmed from memories of me remembering ever being shocked, by the death of Princess Diana).
Even though I didn't know about South Korea, I knew that the country didn't have a royal family but I was interested to see how an ASIAN royal family might exist.
I didn't think that the relationship between an ice-cold personality prince would work with a common-day, average girl (Yoon Eun Hye really did seem like the typical girl-next-door). I fell in love with all four leads. It's why I went on to watch Coffee Prince and My Fair Lady (because of Yoon Eun Hye); watch Mawang and then Antique Bakery and Naked Kitchen (because of Joo Ji Hoon); was obsessed with Kim Jeong Hoon for a while and saw Cafe Seoul; watched "A Frozen Flower" and to this day, am envious of Song Ji Hyo--because she's on Running Man and got to work with SO MANY flower boys (Song JoongKi and JYJ!!).

I grew up sitting around the television watching dramas like stairway to heaven and winter sonata. By watching, of course, I mean watching my mum curse and my sister shake her fist at the screen and my dad rolling his eyes in the corner. I didn't realise how much I loved that time - and the dramas themselves - until dae jang geum though. C'mon, Ji Jin Hee was everyone's first crush.

my first kdrama was dae jang geum that aired here in my home country, the philippines on 2005. that makes me a 5th grader in elementary and i am now a second year university student. i mean i was pretty young back then but that did not stop me from getting sucked in to the wonderful and mesmerizing world of korean dramas. it was beautiful. from then on it was pure bliss. my guardians would even lecture me for hours because i would watch kdramas more than read my books, which did not affect my grades at all because i only need to read once or twice and i would remember the details during exams. anyway i ask myself what i liked about dae jang geum. i liked the story, the dedication of the actors, the pds, cinematography and we could all see that they really put their feelings in portraying their characters and culture. because of that i fell in love with korea s culture. and now it has a serious effect on me. now when i watch historical dramas i research the period, royal family etc etc. yep thank you kdramas i became a dork. i now memorize the different periods and royal families of the korean peninsula. haha
p.s sorry got carries away. answering your question was too much fun.
p.p.s i started reading or visiring dramabeans on 2008, i think. haha or was that 2009. i love dramabeans. seriously you are fabulous. i adore this site. i even visit here more often than facebook and friendster back then when it was more popular.

oh dear this question is deadly, makes me feel so old and realise how much time i've spent being fanatical over kdramas. hmmm the kdrama that started this whole craze would have to be full house. I had always admired SHK's prettiness but never thought much of her acting but Full House showed some of her versatility and I was pleasantly surprised by the cute chemistry between her and Rain

First Korean series is Dae Jang Geum. But what lure me to the dark side is You're Beautiful which I stumble across while channel surfing on cable an I remember I went... Oh dear nowadays kids are into androgynous men! Who knows, 1 episode later and I turn into a raving ajumma frantically searching for this drama online. This is also how I was lead to you dramabeans and as they said the rest is history! I am addicted to reading the recaps as much as I watch it. Infact most of the time now, to save my own life of not blacking out in front of my laptop watching marathon drama I would read the recap first to tame my appetite and then slowly leisurely watch the drama .... Another drama addict cure is to rewatch the same drama... I watched You're Beautiful 8 times back to back... It allows me to satisfy my kdrama and my sleep :)
Happy new year javabeans and girlfriday! Excellent writing and totally loves your comments and analyse of each drama!

My first drama was Personal Taste, a bit more than 1 year ago. I totally fell in love with both leads ( well, it's Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ho we're talking about..).
I couldn't keep myself from watching it, I marathoned it in 2 days ( and one looong sleepless night in between)... It's definitely still on my favorite list , the only drama i rewatched.
After that, I just kept going for more, getting more and more addicted. One year later, I don't even remember how many dramas i watched......

My first luuurve (and still my all-time love) is My Name is Kim Sam-soon. I remember the time when it was broadcasted here in singapore. I couldn't sleep thinking and fangirling over all the macho things Hyun Bin did. And omg! Was Hyun Bin the most handsome creature ever. My friends and I couldn't wait for the daily airing of the episodes, we pooled our money, bought the dvd and camped for ONE NIGHT without sleeping! :) But hyun bin the awesome swoon-worthy eye candy REALLY made up for all that!
We cringed along with Sam-soon, swooned when Hyun Bin declared his love (and secretly wished we could be in Sam-soon's shoes) and googled their names after the marathon. Hahaa those days were so special <3
(needless to say from then on I became an ardent hyun bin cum korean drama fan)

My first love was way back when All About Eve was aired on one of the cable channels here and I stumbled on it one day while channel surfing late one night...
It was the first time I'd ever watch any Korean shows, let alone Korean dramas. The only connection I had before that was when I found my first K-pop addiction in Clon.
Back then when I was watching AAE, no one else I knew actually watches Korean dramas and Korean faces were still very unfamiliar with us. My cousin who saw me watching was puzzled and commented that Jang Dong Gun looks weird...
Kim So Yeon's selfishness and manipulativeness and the contrast with Chae Rim's Sun Mi was unreal but so addicting and the ideal sunbae/boyfriend we had in Jang Dong Gun was just too droolworthy to miss.
Suffice to say that was when I was utterly pulled into Korean dramas and this year is almost my 11th year watching K-dramas.

My Name is Kim Sam Soon! I was about 12 or so when it came out. I had finally come to an age where I could watch dramas and understand about 50% of what was going on.
It was so cheesy and corny; but at the time, it was the first drama I had watched that made me want to cry every time an episode was over because it meant I would have to wait a week until the story could continue. I've re-watched it about 3 times now. I was afraid if I watched it too many times, the magic would fade. Actually, it turns out that I love it more because I actually understand the drama completely and I am now trained to catch metaphors and symbolism and blah blah blah from my AP Literature Class. However flawed it is, this drama has a grip on my heart. :)

My drama first love is "Save Your Last Dance For Me."
Ironically, I was in fact introduced by my parents to the drama of which I fell deeply in love with and have since caused my parents grief, due to my cannot-seem-to-stop-crap-should-be studying obsession. I remember it would air on tv in 2005 every night at 9pm and my parents would watch it. At the time I couldn't understand why they were so interested (as my mom would often discuss details of what was happening to my dad) so I decided to watch an episode with them. BAM! I fell in love. I crossed into the dark side of which there was no hope of escape. Now, 7 years later, after watching at least a hundred dramas, "Save Your Last Dance For Me" is still my favorite kdrama :)

First Love Drama that turned me into the dark side? That has to be ALL ABOUT EVE!!! I was so impressed with Kim So Yeon's performance I watched this series more than 10 times. I have been following all her dramas ever since. Her acting is top notch and she has this compelling charisma that pulls you into the drama itself. It's a pity she never became as famous as the like of Song Hye Kyo.

My first drama? Wow. Goodness, that was maybe when I was in the fourth grade? When Autumn In My Heart came out. I watched it dubbed, because at such a young age, I was neglectent to such a thing called youtube, and English subs. I completely fell in love with Won Bin, because he played his role so well. I felt like he invested so much into Taesuk where as I found Seunghyun such a bore as Joonsu. Thus, my development for the love of second leads, Dr. Poopy Pants, Prince Yul, and my dearest of them all, Yongha and Jaeshin from SKKS. I used to hide in between the arms of the sofa so no one would see me crying while watching Autumn In My Heart. It was my first heartbreak drama, and I hated the ending. I still cry now whenever I watch it.

Happy 5th Birthday Dramabeans! And May there be many many more to come!:-)Totally sneaky way to get all the lurkers to come out.:-D
I was bored and random internet surfing led to my first fall into the rabbit hole that is K-dramas.It began with the lame sounding 'My Girl'.From "Why is the lead actress screaming all the time" to "I want Wookie to give me a snow globe" the transition was a roller coaster ride.
Then was the gem 'Coffee prince' and there was no looking back.Coffee prince was the drama that led me to your site and cemented my love for K-dramas.But I guess 'My Girl" will always be my first love.:-)

My first drama love was Boys Before Flowers. I was bored out of my mind and my cousin calls me and tells me to turn on my computer and watch this new Korean Drama she's watching. I thought she was out of her mind..are we that bored? Back then, I had watched some of those exaggerated Chinese shows and back then Chinese=Korean so I didn't have much expectations. I was right because the first scene, in which Gu Hye Sun was exaggerating like crazy, and then SHE CATCHES THAT GUY...wow that's believable. Something about wondergirl...let me just skip around so I can pretend I have watched it....WAIT WAIT...WHAT WAS THAT??? I clicked the rewind button...and they were gods...four gods walking side by side...the most gorgeous gods on the planet. Even if the story bored me to tears, I was going to watch these four gods till the end. And then I was hooked.

I'm not korean so I find the recaps great in explaining korean cultural concepts that I didn't understand or missed along the way.

hmmm. i first got hooked with TW-Dramas before KDramas. I can still remember that I used to tease those KDramas for their too emotional dramas. haha. but now, looked who ate her words? XD
I think the drama that impacted in my life the most is the TWDrama's "It Started with a Kiss" and KDrama's Princess Hours. Imagine, I spent my summer breaks just watching dramas 24/7 and never get tired of 'em. :) those two are my favorite dramas of all time and i love to watch it again and again. that's just how i love them! =)

My Name is Kim Sam Soon started not just my asian drama addiction but also my obsession with Hyun Bin and my girl crush on Kim Sun Ah.
At that time, it seemed to be something unique and different and enthralling. It was a cut above the rest among all the US based shows that i was used to watching and it was like the rebellious cousin of the sappy, overly drawn local dramas that were airing in my country.
It made me laugh like a hyena, bawl like a baby, shriek like a banshee and oftentimes it left me doing all three things together that before i knew it, i was loony for kdramas.
I have never looked back since then.
I only wanted MOAAAAARRRRRRRRRR....

For me, it has to be My Girl, long ago.. (Wow it makes me feel old)
Can't remember whether it was my first kdrama, but it was definitely the 1st kdrama that got me hooked, line and sinker!
I remember staying up late (even though I was in my teens then) to watch consecutive episodes on DVD because the events were too riveting to me lol.
I liked both Lee Dong Wook and Lee Jun Ki, so was constantly changing sides on who to root for. Until now, I still can't decide who I like better. xD
After My Girl, I started moving on to the others like Dae Jang Geum, Sam Soon, and etc, and was officially became a k-drama addict.
After that, once I discovered Dramabeans, I always came over to read your recaps, both before watching the episode (when I was impatient to wait for subs) and also after the episode (just to understand the story more).
Can't believe it's 5 years for your site already, I think I've visited this site for about 3 years, and watched kdramas even longer than that, but...No regrets!

Congratulations on the anniversary! :)
I am super duper excited to see that you're giving away You're Beautiful's Director's Cut CD as a prize, because that's the series that got me hooked onto K Dramas! It's my first K- drama love, and that one special drama that will, no matter what, be toppled from the first place.
I originally began watching You're Beautiful for Jang Geun Seok (I thought he was really cute in Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do). All I wanted was a glimpse of him as a haughty band leader. But I guess I should have had the foresight to keep 16 hours of spare time with me. The Hong sisters have done a wonderful job with You're Beautiful. Although I realized later that some parts are repetitive in comparison to their older dramas, it was my first time watching a fast paced series that had an innovative plot.
I think most of the drama's charm lies in the comical execution of the events. The Hong sisters infuse each second with creativity, that will either have the viewers laughing or empathizing with the characters. I guess much of the drama's success can also be owed to Jang Geun Seok's humorous portrayal of Hwang Tae Kyung. For a drama that was mainly directed at a teenage audience, it turned out to be one great enjoyable ride.
I ended up loving You're Beautiful so much, that I have since made all my close friends watch it, including my mom and my sis. Not to forget to mention that it made me start learning Korean just so that I could understand it's songs :D
