Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

The first k-drama I saw and fell head over heels for was when I watched Full House in 2007. Thus, the addiction begun. And it couldn't be at a bad time since I was taking summer courses. But dang, it was all worth it. And of course, I got addicted to the Full House OST too. The soundtrack helped afterwards when I finished Full House. I was so obsessed with Rain and Song Hye Gyo that I watched their other dramas as well.

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary!

I stumbled upon your website quite late actually! It was earlier this year around the time you started summarizing Miss Ripley among others, and I've been visiting everyday since then! Thank you for your hard work! :>

I think it was by the end of 2008 that I discovered Asian dramas. I became so addicted to it that I haven't really watched a lot of 'TV' for 2-3 years now.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but my first drama that got me hooked was either Romantic Princess or Smiling Pasta! Both Tw-Dramas! I watched them quite simultaneously I think.
It was the start of the transfer into the dark side. Since it all was so new to me, it didn't take long until I was completely hooked, because I hadn't experienced the excitement of finding something completely new for quite some time.

I still remember how I would sit up late everyday until my eyes were bleeding, only to watch dramas, because it was so exciting and heart fluttering~! Something I think we all can relate to!

I never realized I was such a sucker for romance until that year.

My Girl. I randomly found it while looking for more Japanese dramas to watch and ended up watching it while it was airing. Waiting for subs was painfulllllllllll but I did it anyway because I fell in love with the Hong Sisters' writing right away.

My first drama love - was Hana Yori Dango. Watched this when I was fifteen and fell in love with the triangle and the story. Admittedly though this was also my first asian drama and having watched that it spurned on my drama obssession :) I don't think I gave Korean dramas a go until a year later and one of my all time favourite Korean dramas has to be Dal Ja's Spring - loved loved loved Lee Min Ki! <3

First drama I've watched was Full House, but I didn't fall in love with it madly. I think the one that caused me to discover my taste and whatnot is Truth with Ryu Shi Won and Choi Ji Woo. I loved how well written it was and although predictable, the episodes kept me gripped from one episode to another. Full House, although a first drama and a good one, I didn't like how second leads didn't end up with anyone.

My first kdrama i watched was "I really really like you". i came across it totally random, just watching clips on youtube a few years ago, I saw the most adorable scene from it in a mix with a bunch of other ones. And well... I kind of just hunted it down. It was suprisingly hard to find from what I remember... I'd been a fan of japanese dramas for a while at the time, so I suppose the transition was kind of expected from what I've read of the previous comments. Anyways, after that it was like BOOM! and I was pretty much hooked.

And Congratulations to 5 years on the site :D

My first drama love was definitely My Name is Kim Sam Soon way back when it first came out, gahh one episode and I was hooked, been stuck in dramaland in the years since. Hands down one of, if not the, best dramas I've ever seen. It just felt so genuine, and just really resonated with me. God I laughed and cried way too much watching that show, seriously way too emotionally attached/invested, but I still love it nonetheless. To this day I still wish I could be as amazing as Samsoon, still need to find my own Samshik though :)

My very first drama was Winter Sonata! Looking back, I honestly don't know what I saw in that one (HA!) but somehow Choi Ji-woo and Bae Yong-joon sucked me in and made an addict of me. From there I hopped to My Girl, which solidified my addiction and dragged me further into drama land. I have to say my first true love was My Girl but I think my number one has switched. A few times. Depends on when you ask me because it never seems to stay the same. At the moment, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. Or Best Love. It's a tie.

It was my first drama, and I was totally hooked from the beginning! I rewatched it recently, and it was still as fun as I remembered it. It was a good first love <3

My son started me on watching dramas on the computer.Sorry I Love You. Cried buckets of tears and wringed many Kleenex tissues. Loved the song "Yuki No Hana" to this day. Now I watch everything I can get on my computer because I have lots of time to kill.

Thus far watched 875 Japanese and Korean dramas and movies, and 143 Mandarin and Taiwanese dramas and movies.
Never thought I would watch so many so I started to record them down on paper and also the actors names because I didn't remember who was who.

I've accomplished watching over 1,018 total dramas and movies.I'm a drama FANactic. Just LOVE watching movies and dramas. Next goal - Going to try for 2,000. :< )

Mine was Stairway to Heaven. Kwon Sang-woo pioneered the frustrated chaebol shirtless shower scenes, and I still would like to thank him and the drama writers for that. It kind of also had all the drama cliches pulled into one drama so it really help summarize drama conventions very nicely. Not my fav, but definitely addicting, and I wanted moar! haha.

On a whim one day I decided to watch Coffee Prince, completely unaware of its popularity. I just picked it up because it had the word 'coffee' in it. Hee. Aaaand the rest is history. :)

First official k-drama: Autumn Love

First love for k-drama: Full House, I poured over this drama thousands and thousands of times, cliche gimmicks, contractual marriages and what not. But one of the first to bring me over to the dark side, though not officially. I first introduced into the world of chinese dramas, I started the moment I was born as my mom was an avid drama watcher as well.

My first k-drama was "all about eve". It was so addicted. Every episodes really got me excited about what would happen to SunMi and YongMi (sorry if I'm wrong about their names). It was well script and well directed too. It was brillian series, even now it still the best broadcast series to me.
I loved this series bcoz it had girlpower, and not so intense glooming our heart with tears every where everytime like the other series on that time, no one got a guarantee-die sentence , specially their act beautifully and rightly.
Until I found Coffee Prince, which is my true love.. but if you ask about my first love, that would be All About Eve. And I'm still a YongMi fans.. Xixixixi..
Well anyway, Happy New Year!!! Happy birthday Dramabeans!!! Keep the spirit!!!! Kamsahamnida... For relieve us from curiousity..^^

Thanks to that i can now enjoy this wonderful, but deadly 'hobby'. To either escape reality for a few minutes or simply to just enjoy a good show. I think this is a 'hobby' ill never get sick off <3

Question: What was your Drama First Love? Tell us about the first drama you fell in love with, that brought you over to the dark side.

Answer:
My first drama was Who Are You. I absolutely fell in love with that show. The show had everything that a drama should have it made me cry, it made me die with laughter. I think the main point for me how the dad was so determined to show his daughter he loved her even though he not in this world anymore and that broke my heart. A big plus for me is that I never got bored watching the show like I do with other dramas. After plus after every episode I want to see the next one, I think I got no sleep because I wanted to see the whole season in one sitting. When I'm trying to bring a friend to the dark side I always tell them this drama would be a great to start and after that you will be obsession.

My first drama love was Winter Sonata. My aunt was watching it for the nth time while we were having a Christmas party in their house. It was my first time to watch a korean show then. It was sooo addicting that even my mom watched it. She's really not into the drama romance type so that says a lot. :)) The talented actors, the creative plot as well as the awesome scenery brought me to the 'dark' side'! I started watching tons of kdramas afterwards :))

I originally belonged to the j-drama group so it's a bit fuzzy in my head, but I'm pretty sure my first k-drama love was Goong. I read the plot somewhere -- monarchy! marriage for convenience! -- and couldn't resist trying it out. The rest is, as you say, history. ^^

I'm pretty new to dramas but the drama that got me hooked was Boys over Flowers. I hated it at first, but I had read the manga and loved that, so I gave it a couple of episodes. I had broken up with my long time boyfriend, of five years, and needed something to take my mind off of things. I was pretty much hooked at that point. I ended up finding a new love for the Korean language and culture. I could go on about my drama addiction for hours, and how it started, but I have a drama to watch!

Happy New Year!

I got hooked on Kdramas back in 2002 watching "Friends" with Fukada Kyoko and Won Bin (joint drama project between Japan and Korea). I was a die-hard Jdrama fan since 1996. After watching Won Bin and Lee Dong Gun, I wanted to watch more dramas with them! I finally got my hands on an old VHS copy of Autumn Story (with English subs) through my relatives in Hawaii because I heard Won Bin was in it. It was probably the saddest thing I saw and remember crying buckets. However afterwards I sort of felt refreshed and unstressed after crying so much and realized that it moved me like any other TV show at that time.

I was instantly swept away, but back in those days, it was so difficult to enter the world of Kdrama. I actually had to depend on relatives to video tape (yes, on VHS, remember those?) Kdramas for me in Hawaii because that was the only place where they were often broadcasted with English subtitles. I remember having to wait for them to send the VHS tapes in batches through media mail (which took about 2-4 weeks coming from Hawaii). And sometimes it was really painful when there was a major cliffhanger, tracking problems, damaged or lost tapes in the mail or my relative forgetting to record an episode!

I'm so glad it is much more easier these days for fans to watch Kdramas (or any dramas for that matter)! Also, to this day, I'm still waiting for Won Bin to appear in another drama!

First of all,happy 5th anniversary!
I found your website around 2010 and get hooked until now. I'm sorry to be a silent lurker for so long.

I've been an on and off drama junkies for years. Many times real life took me long enough so that I healed from my addiction but then I relapsed.
I don't remember for sure what my first drama is, maybe between TWdrama or Jdrama. My first Kdrama, which I completely watched, is All About Eve. Trying hard to finish Winter Sonata but failed, and not a fan of Endless Love (why there was always a crying scene in every 5 minutes?jezz)

In spite of my long addiction, my first love drama is Boys Over Flowers. I have the DVD set, searching all info related to the drama in the internet, I watched it again when it was aired in my local TV station (and re-watched again when the TV re-run it),I downloaded all the OST and play them for months, even I wrote a fanfic about soeul couple (yup, I was a soeulshipper back then).
That was crazy since I felt like I didn't get enough BoF.

Since then,I've watched many dramas which has much more better quality than BoF but I will always have a soft spot for BoF.

Goong! Omg, I don't know what was the appeal of goong that sucked me soooooooo deeply into K-dramas! Perhaps it was the whole imaginary monarchy scenario, or amazing Yoon Eun Hye as the ditzy and lovable Shin Chae Kyung (I've followed all of Yoon Eun Hye's drama since, even the disappointing Lie To Me), or the awesome soundtrack by HowL that still remains as one of my all-time favourite OST till today, or maybe even the beautiful set and costumes! Of course, many dramas that I've watched after Goong has far surpassed it in terms of quality. But Goong, being first love, will always hold a special place in my heart. :)

AND I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN COMING TO THIS SITE EVERYDAY FOR 5 YEARS ALREADY!! Hahahah, happy birthday!! Thank you so much javabeans and girlfriday for all your efforts! :) :)

Autumn in My Heart was my first k-drama and it was the one that brought me to the "dark side", so to speak. It was addictive at the time but I won't say I liked it enough to call it my first love, that title belongs to My Girl. I never understood how someone can fall in love with a drama until I stumbled across this little thing. It was just perfect in my eyes.

i think my drama first love would be PRINCESS HOURS (Goong). It's way back 2006 I think. well at the age of 9, i find Joo Ji-hoon INDESCRIBABLY ADORABLE!! Well im not really into dramas as a kid but after seeing him, I started watching the drama. it's really hard back then to convince my mom, but she end up buying me a dvd of Princess Hours. and the drama did not disappoint me. and i think i watched that for 4 or 5 times. and as far as i can remember, the next drama i watched was the snow queen of Hyun bin. and then that's it at the age of fourteen, i think i watched over 20 dramas. and i dont think i'm going to forget Goong. HAHA!!

The first K-drama that brought me to the dark side is "My Name is Kim Sam Soon"! Before MNIKSS, I used to scoff at my friends who watch K-drama as I had the impression that they're just full of cliche plots like the birth secret, or one of the main characters has terminal illness etc.

Since then I've been suck into the world of K-dramaland and now I can proudly say that I watch more dramas than any of my friends!
