Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

If I recall correctly my first drama love was "My Name Is Kim Sam Soon" which I saw back in 2009 or 2010. After that I watched a few k-dramas on TV when I had nothing better to do, but I wasn't that into them until I saw "Secret Garden" (I started watching it 'cause of Hyun Bin). Now I'm hooked and dramas have completely replaced latin soap operas that I used to watch when I was a kid/preteen.

Pasta was the first drama that I watched all the way through (I tried watching "Twinkle, Twinkle" but never got into it), and it had a huge impact on me. It was a very dark time in my life, but watching that simple but beautiful love story was able to put a smile on my face. Since then I've watched many dramas and loved most of them, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Pasta.

P.S.: Are there any other guys that watch dramas, or am I the only one out there? It seems like the names in the comments are pretty much all girl's names. Not that it will change my feelings about them, but I have to ask.

OH MY GOSH, my first drama that brought me to the dark side...would have to be GOONG. Prince Shin stole my heart and made me cry side by side with Shin Chae Kyung when he left her to go to THAILAND to be with the person that should not be named. I was so piss off but then he won me over with that STUPID SIMPLE BACK HUG. DANG IT! Prince Shin, you are the one for me. Truly. THANK YOU JAVABEANS for this wonderful site and everyone who has contribute to it. YOU GUYS are WAY AWESOME!! (=

Let's see here, first ever drama?
Coffe Prince- The Story of how kdramas met Me

Year: 2009
I was just flippin through channels when I saw this weird channel I had no idea we even had and there it was, Coffee Prince with spanish subtitles. I remember it was Episode 2, I just changed it when this incredibly cute guy (Han Kyul) was buying clothes for this very effeminate boy (Eun Chan) which when he talked sounded so much like a girl!!! I was perplexed why I didn't change the channel but the guy was INCREDIBLY cute that the remote just evaporated from my mind.

What really made me fuse to the couch for SEVERAL hours was that these "boys" were going on dates to let women know they were gay...And boy have I laughed to no end with the hijinks that ensued. From pretend kissing, to skipping on the streets and old ladies fawning... it just filled me with so much glee I ended up watching the entire series back to back and can only remember going to bed as the sun was rising....

I can't even begin to describe what this drama means to me, I have watched it over 15 times and I think I'll never grow tired of it.
The drama has it's flaws but I think what I really LOVE about it is that it really portrays what falling in love looks like and feels like. The way you stare at someone at random moments of the day or when they just pass by. The way you find ways to tease or prolong a moment with the other person. Those little moments in the drama just felt so meaningful and very realistic, something I usually didn't see in almost all shows I watch.
And Gong Yoo, Oh lord let's just say I'll go through any lengths to see whatever movie or drama that man is in.
Since then I've seen a very VERY long list of dramas from Japanese to Taiwanese but Kdramas will always have a big place in my heart.

In a nutshell bored days in front of the TV can lead to life altering scenarios, and I wouldn't have it ANY other way.
;D

'Beautiful Days' was the drama to first hook me. My roommate in college passed out one night with an episode playing on her computer. It was the scene when Choi Ji Woo is in the record shop, cleaning the window, and Lee Byung Hun motioned removing a tear from her cheek from outside the glass. That scene had more unresolved sexual tension than just about any US show I had seen at that point, and I was stuck, hook, line and sinker in just one quick blow.

I started out first buying DVD sets and then discovered online sources and all of the amazing fansub communities there. D-addicts led me Soompi, which led me to Dramabeans, and with that, I had my first blog to follow ever.

Dramabeans was more than an introduction to general k-drama news, it was also an introduction to generalized internet cultural/pop media. I learned to love yet more of the shows, which made me love the country, and eventually helped focus my area of historical study in university.

I've followed Dramabeans for the past four years, sometimes commenting, but *always* reading. Happy Birthday Dramabeans! Here's to five more wonderful years!

First love? Definitely Autumn Tale (aka Autumn Story, Autumn in My Heart). That's when my long one-sided love with Won Bin started as well. I cannot believe that was over a decade ago. Wow, I have been obssessed ever since, but the memories of that drama have become like a fossil engulfing most of my heart... hm.

Lovers in Prague.

I didn't know what had hit me, but I liked it (once I got done destroying a month's worth of tissues in 2-days' time) and kept coming back for more. I thought I'd been dropped down the deepest darkest drama hell-hole when I got assigned Asian dramas to review, but now I know I'm not in Iowa, I'm in heaven!

and I'm always at [email protected]

Happy 5th anniversary Dramabeans!!

The first drama that hooked me to the kpop land was, funnily enough, Get Karl! (it isn't something famous like bbf or you're beautiful)
I came across that drama when I was watching a Chinese TV cable and I was sooo into it that I was determined to find a way to watch it without any delay. And so I found the links on the internet and that's how I stumbled to... the wonderful world of KDrama Land :D
and I have to admit, it's the you're beautiful recap in Dramabeans that brought me back to KDrama land when I lost my passion a while back. LOL

Fullhouse!!
I remember watching it during my 3rd yr high school summer break. It's almost 6-7 yrs. ago. >< My cousin was able to borrow a copy of it from her classmate and at that time it is in VCD format(w/c means 1ep per cd.) We finished it for only 3days!!(I consider it an achievement because we used to finish a 16-ep kdrama for a month). And this made me realize that it's fun watching subbed dramas compare to the dubbed ones. :D

My first K-Drama was Secret. I don't know if any one have seen it. It's an old one that was shown on the international channel. It was by accident that my husband and I stumbled upon the international channel and this drama. Ever since then I never stop watching Korean drama. Kim Ha Neul, Ha Ji Won and Ryu Siwon looked really young this drama.

Happy 5th Anniversary Dramabeans!

Full House yeaahh!!!
I was a high schooler back then, all of my friends talk about this drama every single time that at first I was look on them weirdly. Even I'm kind of mock them, don't they have anything else to do besides watching silly drama and then talk about it ALL the time. Duh, teenage girls.
But then I'm getting curious, I just want to take a glimpse, is it really that good and funny, I suppose the story is just a predictable romance, girl and boy fall in love, the end.
So, I watch it, yeah, it's not that bad,, and I watch it again, just to know the next story, then BAM, I'm hooked by Rain and Song Hye-gyo cute bickering.
DAMN, now I'm becoming one of those girls.

A girl that so addicted to drama that she lives vicariously through the heroines romance because her own love live is not satisfying. Big Sigh..

Why oh Why..
Be careful what you say girls, your words will eat you back.

I did watch a sageuk when I was younger, but my first relatively independent drama venture was Brilliant Legacy in summer 2009. Before sending me and my brother off to Korea that summer, my mom specifically forbid us from watching TV, and my grandparents from turning the dangerous device on in our presence. But unlike my family, fate doesn't listen to nagging. I came home late one night, punching in the code and entering the apartment only to hear sounds from the living room. The flatscreen TV was on, featuring a girl with orange mushroom hair and a big-nosed guy with a perm. And thus our illicit love affair began, every weekend night at 9:55PM.

The clock would chime nine, and I would hurriedly drag my brother to his makeshift bed on the floor and force him to sleep, giddily spending the next fifty minutes playing games. I would bounce throuh the commercials, take notes during the episode, and spend the following night hours waiting for a download link to rewatch and analyze with my forum comrades. When calls came from home, I would dance around the subject, talking of piano lessons and art classes rather than the drama that was slowly taking over my life.

That summer, I fell in love with Seunggi, which led to more falling and delicious time wasting in drama and pop culture. That's why I have a fair amount of respect for idol-turned-actors-- even if they're terrible, people do get exposed to the music domain in one way or another. It's a nice blend that affects both foreign and native viewers alike. I still haven't learned to control my drama intake over breaks, but I spend my semesters dreaming of the days when I won't need to control it...retirement. It's part of the reason why I strive to do my best, so that someday I can relax. I don't know if I would have that kind of motivation now if it wasn't for that first experience.

Hmmm the drama that started it all... I started watching Here Comes Ajumma reruns when I happened to catch the first episode on the "Korean channel" (sometimes it became Eastern European late at night). That was the seed, which later turned into my stumbling onto Coffee Prince, which is DEFINITELY the drama that brought me to the dark side.

time really flies... and I dont really recall the very first drama. I started out watching Taiwanese and Canto series way before Kdrama.

Dont really recall the very first one I watched (may have been Full House or My Girl) but I must say that Dramabeans is definitely the 1 that kept my interest going.... looking forward to episodes week after week, latest news, new series to look out for and which series to watch next. Without Dramabeans, I (like many who dont understand the language) would probably have been clueless.

A big thank you to you and all those involved in Dramabeans! Aja fighting... keep going for decades more to come!

I stumbled upon a Korean drama on tv before I knew of such dramas. It was Ice Girl from 2005. It was kind of a crazy plot but I became a lover of K dramas since then. After I bought my first DVD, Winter Sonata, with sub-titles , I just feel in love with the Korean culture, story lines and the directors perception of the emotions.
Absolutely love them!

My first drama, the one that sunk its menacing claws into my sleep patterns and eye sockets, was My Girl. Hook. Line. Sinker. Yeah, I didn't know what Hong Sisters meant, or how Lee Dae Hae and Lee Dong Wook weren't related. I didn't understand my own growing fascination for drama OSTs or cued crying. I didn't nit-pick at every corner the story took me, or complain about incessant screaming. All I knew, understood, and pick up was a romantic, comedic, and bittersweet love story between a poor girl faking to be a rich guy's cousin to appease an ill grandfather, who made a miraculous recovery, forcing the faker to be more fake, until the secrets fly left and right. See? Nothing too complicated.

The first kdrama I watched was Full House but that really didn't bring me over to the dark side. What did bring me over was Boys Over Flowers. I had to know the cast, their names (though I didn't know how to pronounce it), their previous dramas, CFs. I downloaded the songs. I went abroad just to shop for the original OSTs. I had to know what happened next. Went every weekend to a store selling bootlegged DVDs and had to buy what they had even if it wasn't complete yet. Had to watch it raw. Had to know what happened next --- so then I discovered dramabeans for the first time. ;) And late that year, there was You're Beautiful. So my fate was sealed. Doomed. But happy. =)

My first drama that I fell in love with was SBS's "Yeoja"[여자][1997], a series my mom was watching at the time. I was 7!!!!
I had, and to this day, still have no idea what the actual drama was really about...something about a woman who basically carried an unrequited love for the male lead since her school days..and love triangles, and the mother of the woman at the other leg of the triangle just hated the main female's guts. The typical 90s kdrama. I really only saw the last episode...er, the last VHS (2 epis!) -- which would explain why I tend to decide whether to watch a drama based on the finale even now!

But my REAL addiction started with Phoenix/Firebird/불새, with Lee Seo Jin and the late Lee Eun Joo. She was such a great actress. eh~~~ something about unrequited/long-lost loves always gets me!

As I'm sure many current kdrama fans have experienced as well, I turned my little nose up in the air to them dramas before ever watching a show. Ignorance....yep, been there done that.
What lured me to the dark side was My Girl. In fact, I remember the exact scene that got me. Yoo Rin looking up and down the aisles of the airplane going, "HONEYYY!" Are you my honey? Nope. If you have seen My Girl, you may recall that this scene was near the very beginning of the first episode. I was screwed.
Curse you, Kristin, and your need to bring kdramas (and portable dvd player) to our band trip to JAPAN>.<

The love story plot line was also very sweet. It evoke a feeling of fantasy daydreaming and it feels good. Then, Full House, follows. I love the rom-com plot of Full House.

I have to say: Tamra, the Island! I had watched a few dramas here and there before, heard of the BOF craze but something about Tamra brought up the warm fuzzies that are necessary for a lifetime of obsession. So much culture, legend, spaz and bubbliness in one go! Something about the female-dominated awesomeness that I can't get over!

The funny thing is that I use to HATE dramas and I refused to watch it when my grandma watched. Two years later during winter break, I decided to watch Lovers In Paris for lack of anything better to watch. I thought it was okay, and after watching I did some research and found out it was part of series. Then I watched Lovers, and then I was a goner. Now I'm a sixteen year old stuck talking with ahjummas about my kdrama obsession. I would feel sad for myself if they weren't so good. T_T

The first drama I watched and literally got me sucked into kdramas was Full House. Ever since I was little, I've always watched Hong Kong dramas. However, I never watched Korean dramas because I didn't like the idea of watching something not of my own language. It wasn't until this guy friend of mine showed me Full House and then subsequently Boys Over Flowers, that I ended up spending all my afternoons 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years watching korean dramas.
