Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

Ha, my first kdrama........makes me nostalgic. How did I lose my dramavirginity so to speak? I distinctly remember a huge fight with my mother back then (even though I will never ever remember about what we fought). But back then we usually fought ALOT! I was kinda depressed, locked up in my room and sulking when i stumbeld on it......... Shining Inheritance or Brilliant Legacy!!!!!! My first love and till today i think that's kinda funny because it's just such a family drama and I never ever really watched one of those again. But brilliant Legacy opened up a whole new world, a whole new culture for me! Because if you are used to western TV-show the first thought after watching your first kdrama-episode is WT.... What are they talking about? Oppa? is that something to eat? And how the hell can anybody remember those names? I felt so naive because i had never known that people on the other half of the world had their own entertaiment industry and that I was being pretty single minded not really knowing that. My fighting spirit emereged then! i wanted to know MORE! So ii continued watching and suddenly things started to make sense. I got hooked! i wanted them to work out their family issues! I wanted han hyo joo to find her younger brother! And most of all I wanted to watch Lee Seung gi (seriously I'm never going to say he is the best looking out there or even the best actor but he's got such a stage present that I instantly fell in love)

So now I was addicted but what to do? My computer wasn't in my room and though I was able to watch the first few episodes I stil needed to go to bed or my mother would flip. So i did what every addicted would have done. I waited till my parents were asleep and very carefully I snuck out of my room and into the computerroom. Fearfull of discovery and heavy punishments I twiched at every little sound and adrenaline shot through my body. Do you know what that feels like? Sitting in a chair and feeling like you are running for your live? I swear to god back then i was so damn afraid, but for the love of God I could never have stopped (they do say curiosity kills the cat).

In the end I got caught red handed because I was so tired the next morning that my mom grew suspious and caught me the next night but even the scolding I received wasn't enought to make me stop watching.

And I never just watched Kdramas because of the pretty! I'm watching them to widen my horizont and even though I can never convince my friends to watch them with me (philistines) the curiosity for the asian culture keeps me hooked and dramabeans delivers my social drama circle :D.

So HAPPY BRITHDAY and may the next 5 years be grande and interesting!

When I was younger my mom used to go to the Korean store and borrow a bag of video tapes of the newest K-Dramas but this was back in the late 80's (yes old lady here) so my idea of dramas in Korea wasn't really positive. It seemed like everyone in those dramas died of cancer or something horrible. It wasn't until I moved to Korea and saw Dae Jang Geum aka Jewel in the Palace that I became hooked on Korean dramas. Then came Rain in Full House and the rest is history.

My first movie was I'll Mare, and my first drama was Full house. But I fell for Secret Garden, and since that I began to buy or stream a lot of kdrama. There was time when I felt so bored and returned to watch jdrama instead, but I'll fell for kdrama again and again in the end, and it happened after reading your recaps!!! U should have won a prize in each mbc, sbs, and kbs for promoting their drama I guess. Happy keep ur goodworks JB n GF!! Luph yaaaaaaa!!!

It was Boys over Flowers for me. Actually it was Kim Bum that got me into the world of dramas and it's culture. I came upon his picture while internet searching (I forget for what but really it doesn't matter anymore hehe) and i came across one of his BOF images. I was curious so i clicked on his pic which led me to the drama... and the rest is history. I have been a fan ever since. Thats why Kim Bum and BOF will always be my bias.

The first korean drama that sucked away my soul was Full House. I remember watching it over 7 year ago. This was the time before we had high speed internet. There weren't a lot of streaming sites either and youtube was barely on the map. Needless to say, I had to torrent and direct download it which took DAYS.

But my gosh, it was worth it. I knew I had found an addiction when I managed to finish it within 3 days. After Full House was My Love Patzzi, Romance, Save the Last Dance, Wonderful Life etc. Within my first 3 months of addiction, I think I watched over 20 dramas (k-dramas, jdoramas, tw-dramas...hey, I don't discriminate!=P). I also ran out of memory on my computer. I was reduced to putting everything on cds until I could replace my old Windows 98. So yes, I bought the newer Windows XP because it had more memory for me to store dramas.

Wow, I was reading a lot of the comments and it seems like a bunch of people were introduced from when the Hallyu wave skyrocketed around 2004 with Full House (me!) or BOF and YAB

I just want to thank you JB for all the work that you've put into this site. Not only you but the other writers as well. This site is pretty much the go-to-blog for dramas. I started reading during the Dal Ja's Spring days. I couldn't get enough of it so I googled DJS and viola! Been an addict here ever since. Keep up the good work gals (and guys!). Here's 5 to another 5 more! Cheers!!

My Girl is my drama first love. It was the beginning of high school and I was sick of all the weak and meek girls in Chinese/Taiwanese/Hong Kong dramas and my family and friends were suddenly talking about korean dramas. Out of curiosity I picked out My Girl to watch and immediately fell in love/awe with Lee Da Hye's Hyo Rin who was smart, fights back, and never led on the second lead.

Definitely "My Name is Kim Sam Soon". And after that I was searching for more Korean dramaland goodies and thus my addiction started.
If you are asking about a single actor though - that a whole different story! ^^

When my younger daughter asked me to watch a kdrama with her, it was "My Girl". It was my very first Asian drama, and I was surprised at how hooked I became on it. It remains one of my all time favorites, though largely because it was my first drama. And I've been hooked on Asian dramas ever since.

Happy 5th Anniversary, Dramabeans! Here's to many more! And thanks from the bottom of my heart to JB and girlfriday for bringing us the best Asian drama blog on the planet!!
You two rock!!

Wow, the memories...

My first drama was 'My Name is Kim Sam Soon'. I totally fell in love with Sam Soon's personality and even though Sam Shik was a jerk most of the time, by the end I could understand why she liked him so much.

The next one was what really sucked me in, though. '1st Shop of the Coffee Prince' introduced me to the pure sex that is Lee Seung Gyun and I've never looked back.

Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary!

The one that started the obsession, the first kdrama I ever saw and still love the most is You're Beautiful! Its the first kdrama I was ever interested in watching. It was also how I found Dramabeans. I never knew anything about Korean Dramas or Korean actors before seeing it. I'm Arab-Canadian so my experience is limited to North American shows and Arabic serial dramas, and had no idea that this crazy/amazing world existed. What's even more amazing is that it got the whole family hooked, and I mean the whole family! I was watching one episode completely enthralled by it all and then I noticed that my whole family was watching with me (mom, sister, three brothers, even my dad!). We would watch the episode in the morning and then watch the rerun late at night, we were that obsessed. And since then we never looked back. Now we watch dailys, weekend dramas, and sageuks. So thank you Jang Geun Suk for starting this obsession and dragging everyone including my dad and cousins into the addictive world of kdramas.

Coffee Prince...through Dramabeans, believe it or not! I was teetering in the kdrama realm, reading recaps on Dramabeans but was always too lazy to actually watch the drama and it wasn't until Coffee Prince fever and the wonderful Dramabean recaps that finally brought me over to the dark side!

I gotta say it was Boys Over Flowers. The SoEul couple got me hooked to it. I know that it isn't the best kdrama, but nobody can deny it was cracktastic! And thanks to BOF, I stumbled upon another gem, dramabeans - that is! From then on, I was sucked into the world of k-dramas, and lived happily ever after. :D

My first kdrama was "My Girl," but what turned a past time into an addiction was the lovely "First Shop of Coffee Prince." It was oddly relatable and by episode 2, there was already a contract relationship and a piggyback ride. He. I loved it so so much I wanted to read the book it was based on. Much to my delight (and relief!), I found an English translation on this site and more! Countless dramas later, am still fan and follower of kdramas and dramabeans, congrats on your anniversary!

Congratulations to Dramabeans for its 5th anniversary! :D Thank you for all the recaps and the news you have posted for us kdrama fans!

The drama that supposedly turned me to the dark side was Delightful Girl, Choon Hyang :)
My mum (who is Korean) rented it and brought it home - she insisted that my family watch it. So, I watched it when I was very young and even though I didn't understand some plots and situations that was happening during the drama because of my young age, I still loved everything about the drama!

All of the comedy, the sweet romance between Sung Choon Hyang and Lee Mong Ryong, the hilarious characters such as Mong Ryong's family and Choon Hyang's friends, other characters like President Byun and Chae Rin who were selfish and wanted the main hero/heroine for themselves; all of that made me fall in love with the drama itself. It's not really the first drama I had seen, (I've seen previous dramas from 2000 when I was extremely young) but it is certainly the drama that made me want to watch more and more other dramas that were out there.

I still watch Delightful Girl Choon Hyang from time to time because of the fond memories I had in the past and it's where my love & addiction for Korean dramas started! I'm really thankful that I got to know more about my mother's culture through the dramas and the KPOP that I've watched and listened to. :)

I had always stuck to anime but then a friend suggested kdramas. I was hesitant but decided to give it a try. My first drama was Goong in 2010!! Joo Jee Hoon just blew me away and before I realized it, I was in too deep! i loved how funny, touching Goong was despite the plot fails; the OST, Yoon Eun Hye was great too...but JJH more so :P

Then I watched My Girl, My Sassy Girl, Full House, You're Beautiful, F4 wala and sooo many more!!!

Oh my! Beautiful Days started my kdrama addiction! I never thought i'd get to finish the drama because LBH wasnt the most good looking lead (yes, im superficial like that) but dang, his chemistry with CJW just reeled me in! And oh, call me weird but i do find the makjang-ish plot soooo gripping.i was definitely invested in the story. One of the best dramas ever - in my book, at least! Ive seen it a gazillion times and i never tire of it!

Believe it or not, it's "Full House"!

Now, now, stay the tomatoes. Full House, despite all its flaws, was the first KDrama I saw that was fun and light and made me actually giddy for the OTP. It was a refreshing change from all the makjang dramas that have been the traditional fare in our local TV (Autumn In My Heart, Stairway to Heaven, etc).

So tuning in every night for how many months made me realize that this KDrama addiction of mine is here to stay. FOREVER. :DD

My very first drama was All About Eve. I don't remember the story much but I still remember how obsessed I was. Online viewing was not popular yet and all my Sundays were spent indoors just waiting for it to show.

Meteor Garden (TW ver) was the drama that completely brought me over to the dark side. I went back home to Philippines and was puzzled why all the guys (incl my 2 bros) are sporting long, straightened locks and learned about F4. I think I finished the whole drama in one day. My whole family went to sleep and woke up and I'm still watching :)

The first drama that i watched and brought me to the dark side is Princess Hours. I still remember that in my country (Malaysia) all Korean drama will be dubbed in Chinese. At that time (2007) i can't differentiate between Korean or Chinese because they sounded the same.

I also remember that through the first half of the drama I can't watched the drama as I went to holiday with my family. I begged my boyfriend to watch it for me cause I'm dying to know what happened. It felt like a life and death situation. End up i bought the original copy of Princess Hour as my boyfriend was not into Korean drama.

My first Kdrama was CTH's "Prince's First Love". I was channel surfing one night during summer break and caught the first episode where Sung Yuri was dressed in a kimono and CTH's character tried to impress her with a firework show. I immediately fell in love with the cute storyline and the OST! The next day, I tried searching for the CD by calling any local Korean gift/music store to see if they sold it. I had the store owner put it on hold for me, rushed to the store after school in the pouring rain and finally got the OST.
As Prince's First Love was my first kdrama, I had no idea what the drama schedule was like on the korean channel. I tried to tune in at around the same time every night before realizing that it only aired 2 episodes per week. And instead of starting at the hour like American shows, it took me a while to figure out that it aired at 9:55PM. Needless to say, I was addicted and did everything in my power to get my hands on MORE. Your site is a haven for non-Korean fans like me. Congratulations and happy anniversary!

While all of my friends were watching Full House, I decided I would venture elsewhere (cause of my initial dislike of Bi) to watch My Name is Kim Sam Soon. And it was the best adventure ever.

It's been about 6 years since that first jump into the kdrama-land, and even if I still get yelled at for sleeping too late at night, it's completely worth it.

I was introduced to Japanese dramas first actually because I had thought that Korean Dramas were too long with their 20+ episodes and with their cliches of someone getting cancer, love interests being related to each other, etc and because of that misconception I wasn't eager to watch any Asian Dramas at all. And then, I watched Last Christmas. I was intrigued, amazed by the storyline about the two star crossed lovers and before it was all said and done, I was in tears more than once. After that, I went to more Japanese Dramas and then that was it, I was hooked on Dramas.

My first k-drama addiction was back when I was 8 in 1996, "First Love" with a plethora of up and coming actors including Choi Sujong, Lee Seungyun, Bae Yongjoon, Choi Jiwoo, Cha Taehyun, and Lee Hyeyoung! It also had one of my favorite veteran actresses, Park Jungsoo! Oh the memories of renting videotapes and watching them with the whole family!

Stairway to Heaven!

Definitely the original korean drama that drew me into korea in general. The story, acting, actors, everything was so different and suspenseful. I watched that drama when I was maybe eight years old and it drew such pity from me for poor little Choi Jiwoo's younger self. It was the best! And it began my love for Kwon Sangwoo as well.

Wow, that's so generous of you guys! ^^ And I'm a New Year baby, so it's my birthday too... *hint hint*

My first kdrama love was Delightful Girl Choon-hyang - it was actually also the first kdrama I'd ever watched, and is entirely responsible for my current addiction. Jae Hee/Hong sisters, I blame YOU.

It was just so incredibly funny - and being an uninitiated drama-watcher, the melo really got me too. All that noble idiothood made me bawl, and was torture since in my naivety I fretted over whether Mong-ryong and Choon-hyang would ever get back together. But I loved it all and still revisit the first few episodes from time to time thanks to some kind uploaders of subbed eps on youtube.

to be honest...i've watched dramas for years but never enjoyed kdramas because they were all long and draggy. i always just stayed on the jdrama, hkdrama and twdramas when i first became drama-crazed. then somehow...i watched "over the rainbow" and fell in love with it. I just loved all that emotion and all that pop-star-in-training stuff, going through hardships and such. back then it was such a special drama for me since i have always been interested in celebrities and such. but in recent years there've been more of these music-scene dramas (you're beautiful, dream high, what's up) but i'll never forget 'Over the Rainbow'.

That drama finally got me to finish a full k-drama and pushed me over the edge to watch new ones. :)

surgeon bong dal hee! i'd never taken dramas seriously before that, and i sorta underrated people who made them, you know, just like the stereotype people have of actresses (slutty handsome, scandalous, bitchy, blah blah). this was the first drama ever that lifted my attitude towards korean dramas to a new plane. it's not just about tragedy love, or family never-ending sitcom, it can bring you a great source of emotions, ranging from sadness, angry, to inspiration. i was motivated a lot after watching the drama, and that's it, bong dal hee!

But, I still gave K-dramas a chance, and started to watch You're Beautiful. I absolutely fell in love with the drama and ever since then I have been hooked on K-dramas.

It also helped out that I LOVED their ost. :D I didn't really start getting into dramas until I watched Prosecutor Princess. It was the drama that brought me to the dark side because my mom kinda introduced it too me. Ever since then I've been watching dramas everyday now..

Looking back, it was fairly absurd, but it was certainly enough to hook me! Now, Kdramas are almost all I watch, I've got CNBlue and Rain on my iPod and anni and kamsamnida have found their way into my everyday conversations...
