Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1

javabeans: Happy New Year! Another year has zoomed by — time flies when you’re watching dramas, don’tcha know — and 2012 marks an extra-special moment for us at Dramabeans, because the site turns 5 this month.

girlfriday: Happy birthday Dramabeans! You’re finally old enough to go to kindergarten!

javabeans: Or advanced into middle age, if we’re talking cat years. And as we know, the internet = cats.

girlfriday: Well that explains where all the time from the fourth dimension went to, ‘cause I certainly don’t FEEL five.

javabeans: I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for half a decade. K-dramas have sucked away my youth! How is this site still going? To think, when I started in January 2007, my primary mode of thought was, “I wonder how many people would stumble onto this place randomly.” Because then that would be a measure of how many people were interested in dramas in the English-speaking world. As it turns out, a whole damn lot.

girlfriday: I find that most of life’s truths can be found in quotes from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.”

javabeans: Also “This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.” And “I have just created something totally illogical.”

girlfriday: See? Maybe internet also = baseball.

javabeans: In any case, we decided The Big 5 called for some celebratin’, and how better to celebrate than to give tons of stuff away? It’s a month-long Anniversary Giveaway Extravaganza!

girlfriday: We’ll be raining down presents during the entire month of January, because if you’re part of the Dramabeans community, it’s your birthday too, and birthdays call for presents!

javabeans: You might want to mark Sundays on your calendar, because every Sunday (or Monday, if you’re ahead of us in the States) we’ll be giving away something super-duper-fantastico exciting. Wait, am I overselling this?

girlfriday: Only if you’re a grinch who hates presents. Every week we’ll be asking you a question, and all you have to do is leave a comment with your answer and email address, and you’ll be entered in that week’s drawing.

javabeans: We’ll select winners by random draw. Check back a week later, and see if you’ve won! If you haven’t, fear not, because we’ll be announcing the next round as well. More prizes!

girlfriday: And they get better each week!

COFFEE PRINCE!

My first drama love back in 2009 (I can't believe I've been watching k-dramas for 3 years now). Although it was already two years after the original airing, it was the first Korean drama I've ever watched and got hooked on. And consequently, found my way to the dramabeans-land.

The thing that got me hooked on it initially was the look of the series. It is so beautiful to watch. I was amazed how different it looked from the few Japanese anime live-action series I've seen and the contrast from the American TV shows I've been following.

What made me love it is the story; pretty cute and crack-tastic. The premise itself isn't the most original but Han-kyul falling for and giving into a "guy" Eun-chan just killed me. (How cuter can GY and EEH be?) It is ingenious and very complicatedly innocent. Because of this show as well, I dream of a bachelor pad like Han-kyul's and a coffee shop like 커피프린스.

Save the last dance for me. Since that drama was aired, I started to hallucinate for some time. Waah.. Thinking of what will happen in the next episode or so. I don't remember how many times I watch that drama, all I knew is every scene are very clear until now. Definitely my first love drama! The OST happen to be my fave song too! ^^

I used to watch mostly Chinese and Japanese dramas until I "tried" out City Hall my first Kdrama and have been hooked forever! Kim Sun Ah and Cha Seung Won were so funny but their characters also had so much depth and development. Pretty much a perfect drama and one of my all time favourites. Now i'm hooked line and sinker on Kdramas/variety shows - I rarely watch anything else!

The first drama that brought me over was The Coffee Prince, i watched that thing till i looked like a freaking raccoon, not a pretty sight for my classmates to see the next day. Sadly i still can't kick my drama obsession and that's why i'm still stalking this site.

Oh my this is so cool!!! I started getting absorbed into Korean dramas ever since I got into my very first Korean drama. And that was 11 years ago! My first drama that I fell in love with was Hotelier with Bae Yong Joon and Song Hye Kyo. It was so sweet between Bae Yong Joon and Song Yun Ah. I was really torn between who Song Yun Ah should choose. If she should choose Bae Yong Joon or her old time love, Kim Seung Woo. Now 10 years later, Kim Seung Woo is hosting win win and was in Miss Ripley. Then I was followed up with Full House and fell in love with Rain! Full House is still one of the best romantic comedy written and made! But I wouldn't have loving Korean dramas till this day if it wasn't for Hotelier. Thanks dramabeans!

I've loved watching dramas ever since The Successful Story of a Bright Girl with Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk. My parents use to rent the video tapes and watch them with me on our clunky old tv/vcr player.

My first K-drama...wow, it had to be Yellow Handkerchief, a daily drama that aired on my local pbs station at 12:30 every weekday. Yellow Handkie was very melo, I laughed and cried until my poor eyes needed visine. There just was some thing that drew me in and never let me go. I'm still hopelessly obsessed with a good melo. This was the drama that made me a fangirl of Han Ga In, Lee Tae Ran, Lee Yoo Ri and Yeon Jung Hoon 4 life.

wow 5th year. Congratulations !!

I think my very first k-drama was "Juliet's Boyfriend" with Cha Tae-Hyun. so long a go. I remember my dad was watching it all the time so i started watching it too and really liked it. but at that time i didn't know it was a Korean drama since it was dubbed in Chinese.

i didn't really start following Korean drama till Goong and Coffee Prince. then i was just obsessed with Korean shows and Yoon Eun Hye.

My first drama love was definitely Goong. It was quite a crazy story actually. It was 6 years ago during my grade 6 year. The dubbed version was being aired on tv, and I got so hooked on the drama. It was like love at first sight if I may say.
Then from then on it was like I tumbled down a black hole of a stairwell to kdrama. Which till today I never regretted.
Back to the story. I was completely under the hypnosis of the goodness from it to the extent that my FIRST EMAIL, BLOG and ALL OF MY STATIONARY and NOTEBOOKS had Goong's OTP all over. :D And back then not as many people I knew likes kdramas or Goong so I was fangirl-ing everywhere. And I think my effervescence of love managed to catalyse my class's love for Goong too. I bought the dvd and spread it along with everyone I met (strangers or not) and converted everyone. A very proud memory HAHAHA.
Till today I can't like Ji Hyo because I hated her character in Goong. That's how much I've been affected by it.
Yeps. This story is an understatement of how fangirl crazy I was back then....
But it was also an awkward phase given that I watched the kissing scenes with my class (guys and girls) and my parents ._. HAHAHA
ANYWAYS
I LOVE YOU GUYS SO HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! :)

Hotelier BY Bae Yong jun & Song Yun Ah way back in 2001 was my first ever korean drama! Since then Ive watched countless dramas with favourites here and then but Hotelier will always have that special place in my memories, simply because it was my first (k-drama) love :)

It held fond memories of weekends spent swooning over byj's romantic antics (300 roses!), dialogues & the lovely ost.. the craziness of watching the dubbed episodes first followed by the raw ones just to hear the actors' original voices ( back in those days, korean dramas were so rare and the dramas shown had dual languages, either dubbed chinese or original with no subs).

Never expected that this was my gateway to the never ending korean craze.. through the years, ive learnt the language, went there for holidays, fell in love with the food, music, ppl, movies, varieties, beauty products!etc etc

And somewhere along this craze, i chanced upon dramabeans.. the site that became my daily habit to come in and keep myself updated on the k drama / movie world :)

Happy 5th Anniversay!

My first K-drama love was 내 이름은 김삼순 (My Name is Kim Samsoon). The episodes which aired every weekend on the now defunct AZN channel from midnight to 1am had me and my friends hogging the huge flatscreen in my dorm's lounge.

I've been hooked to all things Hallyu ever since.

I started off with Japanese dramas, but quickly started to fall in love with Korean dramas. I've watched many many dramas, and have had many K-drama crushes (yayy) but it wasn't until I saw Lee Kyu Han in Can You Hear My Heart that I thought, "Hey. Maybe this isn't just some B.S. procrastination tool, maybe some characters actually have their stuff together, even if they're minor and are doomed to suffer at the hands of the dumber-than-80IQ leads?" I also liked this drama because it dealt with hearing loss, and I am hearing impaired. I was disappointed at how ridiculously inaccurate parts of it were, and how it didn't really define the main character like it should have, but some scenes still made me cry because they reminded me of my own difficulties.

I feel inlove with Princess Hours. The drama is so simple shallow but youthful to their love story. I became obssessed with the drama that I bought a pirated copy of it, slept late at night to finish 2-3 episodes after coming home from work, and even brought some episodes in the office to watch them (yes, during working hours!). We even went to the church in Macau where ChaeKyeong-Shin got married, ride a fast tuk-tuk in Bangkok like Shin-HyoRin and recently visited the bears featured in Namsan Bear Museum. Also I had made copied one of the Princess' dress to wear in my cousin's wedding. Maybe I didn't bring myself in the dark side but made a lot of crazy things because of my addiction to it.. ;)

I've seen quite a few, being a young Korean child. But those were just incomprehensible flashes of film: Ruler of Your Own World, Beethoven Virus, Damo, etc. But the one that I latched onto led me to DB.com, late-nights reading recaps/procrastinating, and this wonderful escape from high school. Having marathoned BOF with the mother in the summer, I figured the silly, manga genre and pretty boys were my cup of tea. Months later along came this drama called: You're Beautiful. I heard all the gossip surrounding this hilarious mess throughout Saturday mornings Korean school and Sundays at church. So I decided to take a peek and BAM, hook, line, and sinker. It was the first drama I watched while still airing (as in GAH, patience > option of 16 straight hours of A.N.Jell). Oddly enough, YB found me two, new great non-Korean friends with a great affection for k-culture. Also, my Korean has improved so much. I can speak to adults with about a 20% chance of making a fool of myself...down from 90%.

So thanks YB. You're my first kdram and a life changer.

my first k-drama lurve has got to be "successful story of a bright girl" with jang nara and jang hyuk, in 2002 i think. i was studying then and stayed in hostel, so i remember going down to the common room to watch and drool over Jang Hyuk on tv. (i dont even like going down to the common room but Jang Hyuk made me do it.) thus begin my obsession with kdrama and Jang Hyuk....

.... or is it kim rae won's "attic cat"? this is what happen when you watch too many kdramas for 10 years. =p

lee dong wook's 'La dolce vita' brought me to Dramabeans, making my obsession with k-drama even worse. =D . so thank you,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DRAMABEANS!

Sassy Girl Chun Hyang :D

It just felt fresh and different at that time (from the usual mexican and makjang-ish tv dramas aired here).

It's the 1st drama I marathoned and watched undubbed with subtitles. The cast was small but tightly knit and even the side relationships were amazing (daddy lee is awesome with both MR and CH). OST was always spot-on and it was the 1st drama with a lot of meta and parodies of other kdramas.Hong Sisters really did well in their 1st drama. :DDD (now i want to watch it for the nth time!)

oh wow, has it really been that long? Happy 5th Anniversary! :D
First k-drama I ever watched was Witch Yoo Hee, but the first drama I fell head over heels in love with was You're Beautiful. Loved the silly storyline and the exaggerated comedy with the tiny moments of wistful heartbreaking "oh no don't do this to me". Jang Geun Seok definitely carried that drama for me, though Lee Hong Ki was my favourite band-member in the show - it's hard to resist such a dork, really~ I'm still a huge Hong Sisters' drama fan till this day (and Best Love hit such a sweet spot up there in my heart wheee Cha Seung-won).

It's the Chinese-dubbed version of You're Beautiful that my husband was watching at the time. I think I did my best to avoid Korean culture for a long time, but this drama sucked me in somehow. It was so unbelievably ridiculous, yet ridiculously funny at the same time, spliced with total fantasy. I try not to follow new dramas if I can, but I eat K-pop for breakfast.

My first drama that sent me to the deep end - I mean, brought me to the dark side of kdrama addiction was Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) on AZN. I started watching in 2005 and now I have been doing subtitles from Korean to English and have a fanpage with a following of 25k other drama addicts. I still wonder years later if I hadn't been a bored high school student flipping through channels until I saw food porn and hanboks, would I be the same person today? That was a rhetorical question because the answer lies in every addcit's heart. =)

I actually was looking for a fun japanese show on Youtube and "You're beautiful Episode 11" was on the recommended video list. I watched Jang Geun Suk deliver one line and got hooked.I became so addicted that I stayed up to finish watching you're beautiful on the night before my SAT...needless to say I had to retake it. I haven't slept in 2 years because of k-dramas. Then..I found your website and became more obsessed..(Thanks alot :/ ) . But it was worth it. I'm always so thankful for the show because it introduced me to such a beautiful culture that I may have never noticed. (And don't me started with K-pop)
