Yoo Seung-ho cast in cable fantasy-melodrama

Yoo Seung-ho is heading to cable for his next project, a drama titled Operation Proposal, to air on channel TV Chosun.
It’s based on the 2007 Japanese drama Proposal Daisakusen starring Yamapi and Nagasawa Masami, and the role ought to give Yoo a chance to dial back the villainous route he took in Warrior Baek Dong-soo in favor of a gentler role. He plays a man who realizes that he’s in love with his longtime friend… at her wedding ceremony. Well, that’s awkward. Thankfully, he’s given a second chance to win his love by traveling back in time.
Ah, phew. Well, that explains the casting of an 18-year-old, because no matter how good an actor Yoo is, I’m not sure I’d buy him feeling a lifetime of regret at the altar when he looks so fresh and young. Maybe a semester of regret.
The series is described as a fantasy melodrama, and Yoo said, “I found the topic of time travel fresh, and the way he works hard to protect his first love is memorable.” It sounds like a whimsical heart-tugger, and I’m all for both of those things (and for Yoo), so bring it on, I say.
Writing the series is Yoon Ji-ryun of two prior school-set series, Sharp and Boys Before Flowers. Erm, I’m not sure how to feel about that. Granted, Boys Before Flowers was more weak in the editing and directing than it was in the writing, so maybe that’s not something to worry about. Directing is PD Kim Woo-sun of daily dramas Can’t Stop and the recently wrapped You Are Quite Beautiful.
The drama will begin filming later this month, and plans for a February broadcast.

no i hope not. i think she's too cutesy. I think the girl should be average/bad ass. I have a soft spot for nam ji hyun! Her last two big roles were really only big on paper but she was great in will it snow. After nam ji hyun I'd go for baek jin hee I first saw her in a minor role in loving you a thousand times and she's really showing some great acting chops. I would choose lee chung ah if the last drama I'd seen her in was accidental couple but her yang eun bi is still too fresh in my mind.

And really, the girl made me love Oh Ha Ni even though it was a potentially disastrous character. I'm gonna give her credit for the acting chops she's got.

I would so love her in this role! I can't tell you how much I loved her in PK or MK. However, my initial hope is that this character will not be played by another idol. Really drama Gods, can you not just give us a fabulous actor these days.

Oh, as much as I love Nam Ji Hyun, I think she's too young for this one. Having watched the original, the cast there were already in their 20s, and they just made them look quite younger.

Still...in the original, the characters are between the age of 15~ about 24 (graduated from collage for sure)....Yamapi pulled it off, but he was like 22 at the time? Ish?
Just not sure Yoo seung-ho can pull off the adult part of the role...

Oh, Park Eun Bin is an actress with ENORMOUS potential, and like Yoo Seung Ho, she's gotten cast in many "young version of main character" sageuk roles. She acts with a very strong presence. I'd be really happy if they act opposite each other again.

yes... I hope so that park eun bin will be chosen as the leading lady of yoo seung ho because I really like them when they are partnered together. She's really great in acting!!!!!! She's been partnered with yoo seung ho in the following dramas:The legend and Queen seon deok. they also have a music video entitled "Taeyeon and the one-Like a star". I so disliked Yamapi's character in the dorama version, but I hope this version manages to make the character more likable. I just don't want any idol to play the female role, hopefully someone actually talented will get the role.

lol, the strength of the drama was the supporting casts, not the two leads. then again, i'm a Nagasawa-hater so that explains my bias. as for Yamapi, dude does one characterization in every role except for Nobuta wo Produce. this is one adaptation i'm pretty the korean actor, Seung Ho, will do way better than the dorama!

It's been a while since I saw it but mainly because the guy suddenly decides that he loves the girl on her wedding day and then wants to change the past.
I actually think the supporting cast was stronger then Pi and Masami in this case, Hamada Gaku was hilarious and Eikura was good.

No, the real plot wasn't "suddenly" it was that he'd loved her forever since they were in Elementary School and the drama gradually shows that he had loved her for a long time during their long friendship together, but he was always too slow and couldn't bring himself to confess to her. He only could travel to the past through various wedding photos in the slide show. A wedding fairy shows up and tells him to say Hallelujah Chance! (Which was used for gags)
The original wasn't a melodrama either, it was a WAFF with comedic elements... so I'm not sure why the Korean version wants to ship it as a melodrama. I liked the original tone as a comedic WAFF (Warm and Fuzzy feelings) 'cause I'm allergic to Melodramas. In that drama it excelled at showing the every day of Japan over a lifetime and integrating it which also earns the label "Slice of Life."
What I liked about the main character was that he was imperfect and what the drama explored was him facing more himself and his own lack of action. I'm kinda tired of the angry perfect-looking Chaebol character in Korean dramas where the main character has to warm him up and then they insert a stupid rival on either side to pad the plot. Can they make a love drama without the rivals or at least play with the concept of the rivals a bit more?
The original also had a movie attached which made up for the really open ending. The movie sealed the deal finally.
^^;; I have a story memory that's fairly good.
If the Korean drama can capture the *feeling* and spirit of the original drama, then I'll watch it. But if it inserts hospital scenes as filler, puts in a random disease, adds angsting and doesn't show the character trying to face himself and righting his own wrongs, I'm out. That would be taking the heart of the original drama and kicking it.

I think that also reflects the appeal of Japanese dramas, that coming-of-age narrative (also there in grown-up renzokus.) For two characters to fall in love with each other, they both have to evolve in a significant way and muster courage to express it. When it's done well, it resonates on a level that K-drama romances rarely reach. This is also true when they do remakes (hello Boys Before Flowers!); they tend to gloss over the important lessons.

ProDai, though not the best dorama i've seen remains to be one of my favorites because of all those things you discussed. It's just how much I love the way the Japanese do their coming-of-age dramas (and films), even with fairy tale elements. They can make it work.
Now I've loved some Korean melodramas so it would be very interesting to see this adaptation.

Kyaaaaah! exactly the point I loved so much about ProDai. The main couple was meeeeh (I tried so hard to root for them, but they had the same chemistry as the iceberg which met the Titanic), but the true force was certainly the friend group! We should not see the individuals here, but the ensemble, indeed....

I see why some people don't like him, but I thought it was a pretty realistic portrayal of somebody who is afraid to step out of their comfort zone. I thought they wove it into his character really well.
Also, the reason why the ensemble is so good is because it was almost more about the friendship than the romance, which is an ongoing thing with Japanese dramas. That said, I thought the main couple did a great job.

I am not sure I care too much at the quality of the writing, editing, sets, OST, costumes.
They could film this on a community theatre stage with their orchestra and set/stage crew. As long as I am in the front row, that is fine.

God, ProDai is so asinine and plodding, despite having three actors I luuurve in Pi, NagaMi and Fujiki Naohito. It's like Groundhog Day without any energy. Also bad that Pi and Masami had no chemistry. None whatsoever. If Maki played the lead maybe it could have worked better.
And what's with Yoo Seung Ho playing yet another Yamapi character after God of Study? Unless YSH wants to try out a remake of Buzzer Beat, I hope he draws the line here. If Korea remakes Kurosagi, I will abduct YSH so he doesn't get roped into it.

okay- this morning on my train ride to work and there was a sign in hangul for a christian media store called hallelujah shop- in romanji the sign is something like harroiruya ( can't remember exactly because I got caught up thinking about how the rules for oe is different in english than korean) so when I saw the posting on the site I sent my sisters a message with the info and followed up with instead of hallelujah chance it'll be harroiyuya chanseu!

Proposal Daisakusen was pretty amazing, despite not wanting to watch it initially because of the description. Japanese dramas are really good at capturing quiet moments and nostalgic times of life without the need for unnecessary angst, so I hope the Korean version can portray the subtle nuances of the original. The original was heart-tuggy, but in a good way- no things out of left field, just normal life.
Oh man, I forgot about "Hallelujah CHANCE!" Okay, I'm excited. Now I have to go back and watch the original again!

I think this is a great idea. In fact, they could cast Ji Chang Wook and Yoon So Yi, and get the triangle right this time . . .
ProDai is a good idea (though I think remaking Nobuta wo Produce is the obvious play), but 16 time-travel episodes is a lot to ask. Chae Rim and So Ji Sup kinda did a 10-year romp with "We Are Dating Now", and they only made it to episode 10 or so before they ran out of flashback material.
Best part of ProDai are the culture in-jokes. ProDai had nods to Winter Sonata, the World Cup, among other things.

I think it would be really difficult to remake Nobuta. One of the strengths of that one was the unique tone. The main actors knocked it out of the park, too.
But yeah, the downfall of Korean dramas is the length, and having to pull birth secrets and parental angst out of the hat to fill out the episodes. Hopefully they can avoid that.

if they use the material from the movie sp (or an addapted version) that takes the original to approx. 14 episodes (the sp counts as 2 :). ) Which isn't TOO far of from a Korean drama.

when I first heard this news I was against it too. I think it will be hard for me to watch it with an open mind. I see it failing if it tries too hard with the romance. I wonder what will replace the second button episode. That one is one of my favorites!

Overall, I like the ProDai concept, and there's a few ways to go about this role.
Casting Yoo Seung Ho makes a lot of sense, because in the original show, the husband-to-be was at least 15 years her senior. (They also cast Fujiki Naohito as that husband. Fujiki Naohito is kinda like the Song Seung Heon of J-Drama, so when she has to pick Pi over Naohito, they literally drew the line in the sand over their demographic. Let's just say I think she made the WRONG WRONG WRONG choice . .. ) It also makes sense for YSH to take this role, since it'll be marketed back to the Hallyu market.
Yamapi is kinda like the Kimataku of his generation. *ducks missiles of RAGE from Team MOB* If not in Japan, arguably with the international market. And, yes, Kurosagi has "Lee Min Ho" written all over it.
ProDai was also a meta-drama. As many of you know, "Johnnies" go through a coming-of-age in their drama list, where they "graduate" from not really being allowed to kiss-and-stuff in their shows to fully becoming true male leads in renzokus. ProDai was also a wink-wink homage to both Nagasawa's and Yamapi's careers -- Dragon Zakura (note how similar the cast is between the two shows), Nobuta wo Produce, Kurosagi, etc. Nagasawa was at the time the It girl (the heir apparent to Nanako's/Yuuko's Girl Next Door persona), and they kinda tried selling the show on that. The question wasn't just whether the two character would get together; it was whether Pi was considered by Johnny Entertainment to "get the girl" in a show.
Now . . . NONE of this is going into YSH's show. And triangles are standard du jour. So, what is the real value of doing a time travel narrative? Well, the original ProDai was a coming-of-age story that, on paper, was about timing and fate. But, if you look deeper into the story, it's a mystery narrative. We try to figure out why exactly they never got together, and it's only in the last 1/3 of the show do we realize, SHE was also not ready for that kind of relationship with him.
If the word "chonahhh!!!! isn't used, then K-dramas don't really do coming-of-age stories that often. K-dramas explore the mechanics and nuances of romantic chemistry, such that yet another show exploring these things will not be anything interesting. But where a ProDai remake could work is provide an opportunity for K-drama characters to do Japanese-style solopolizing. We haven't seen that with the Playful Kiss remake, the City Hunter remake, or the Boys Before Flowers remake. We could see it here.
But yeah . . . ProDai has one of the awesomest "Born to Run"-style theme songs in all of J-dorama/K-drama/blah blah blah. Good luck Korea in beating this song . . .

you're sooo right about kdramas not doing coming of age! even in sageuks, they're not really coming of age. I think the closest we get to that is Giant. The time travel is a really good plot device and I think it can work- we can successfully get to see someone come of age.

Hmmmn, I liked the original a lot, not sure how I feel about this remake. I´ve never seen Yoo Seung-ho in anything, but he seems quite young for the role. The main characters weren´t teenager for that long, it moved quickly on to college, etc.

I liked ProDai, even if the romance was slow and Yamapi and Nagasawa had no chemistry (worst kiss ever), I liked the concept and I think it was executed well.
The original was definitely more fantasy-romcom so the melodrama element has me worried. Don't mess this up Korea!

I never finished proposal daisakusen.... didn't grab me. Might revisit it at some point, I don't know. It just seemed to drag.

I watched the japanese version and liked it very much because of the fairy and the friends. The love between the main characters didn't capture me that much but I loved the interaction between the different characters.
I really liked the idea about changing just one little thing in the past and a persons life can completely change.
That was in some episodes really surprising.
I'm looking forward to it.

I thought the point was that even making 10 changes to the past wouldn't completely change someone else's decision (the wedding still went on), but it did built up the strength in Ken to be more expressive and honest about his feelings.

I love Proposal Daisakusen!!! I hope that the Korean drama emphasizes the friendship, not just the romance, because that was what made the jdrama so sweet :)

i was never a fan of ProDai because i hate the idea of stealing the bride on from the altar no matter how much he loves her..its just not right for me...but for YSH i would like to give this drama a chance.. because he's too hot!!kyaaa!!!!!!

The Japanese dorama was quite wonderful, so I hope that they can utilize his fresh talent and cast a good female to give a heartfelt, emotionally authentic but new take on the drama.

I actually followed and liked Proposal Daisakusen, although I gotta admit that I loved the concept way more because sadly enough something was just lacking in the drama itself. Love Yamapi, but his character got quite frustrating for me... same with the girl. So I'm having looking forward this adaption, hoping it'll get this right or just feel more right. But it does make me nervous hearing it's the writer of Boys Before Flowers >_____< I'm allergic to anything related to that one (except Lee Min Ho, Kim Bum and Kim Joon of course, the only delight in that mess of a drama). Still, I'll be sure to give it a try regardless.
Who will be the lucky girl? :P

How many episodes will this remake have? I can't imagine 15 time-travels for the usual 16-episode kdrama.
And I wonder if Seung Ho could pull off the "present" lead character for the story spans for a few years. I can't imagine such a baby-face in aghast in a love triangle.

I actually enjoyed the jdrama, even though I thought the girl was really blah.

I admit having some hesitations to watch Proposal Daisakusen but boy, I was hooked right from the first episode. Hopefully the Korean version is going to be funny and wonderfully amazing instead of a hot mess like Boys Before Flowers. I dont even understand the fuss of BFF. I am not a fan of Japanese Dorama but Hana Yori Dango and BFF are like heaven and earth in terms of quality.

I am sad about this news because I absolutely HATED ProDais but it's Seung Ho so I'll give it a shot. Plus, my hope is there can be some sort of improvement? I suppose the leading actress will be the clincher... Idk.

Japanese media tends to excel highly at slice of Life dramas without making them sappy or a crying fest.
Unfortunately Americans tend to abhor anything that is slow so slice of life isn't as popular with the US crowd. I have an irksome feeling it's the same with Britain and Australia from what I've read/watched. (I didn't forget the Knucks too).
This drama wasn't "He suddenly realized at the wedding he loved his best friend." It was he was in love with his best friend since he was in elementary school, but couldn't bring himself to confess to her no matter how hard he tried. Through the slow opening process of gradually showing how he faces himself, he starts as an imperfect character, but gradually it shows that he lost a lot of chances and was a coward. Facing that, he changed just a little as a character--which is something that Japanese dramas do well--only one change to a really flawed character. The movie was even better than the drama in this respect. It showed that the character had slipped back into his old habits, which was a kind of nice message.
The drama succeeds in showing life from elementary school up through adulthood without pounding one's head over with it. It excels at showing friendship and creating Warm and Fuzzy feelings, if you let it bubble of the drama sweep you away. It had no "evil" characters, which made you feel worse for Ken-chan. No one was exceedingly forwarded as beautiful, there wasn't ground-shaking make overs.
Korean dramas I haven't yet experienced one that could do this kind of gentle sweep of time and create warm feelings from it. Korean dramas excel at other things by their nature of wanting to create rivals, make characters downright evil, etc. Subtle isn't really big on my list of things to describe Korean dramas as--I love them for *other* things. Like making one's heart boil, beat: dokun dokun... gasp, etc. (Also toilet humor.) Prop Dai remake would need a gentle hand with good outlining to get the writing to work.

I like Prodai concept esp the time when the fairy freezes other people except the male lead,haha. But I'm also curious about who will be their other three members because I actually think the side story about their friends is also interesting, especially the bickering couple. I even like that girl more than main female lead. I actually adores their five members' friendship and it's one of my fav friendship in Japanese drama.

now im interested.. The lead got me right then and there.. Or should i say his EYES! Most expressive ever.. I havent seen him in anything except the movie 4th period mystery and i think he acts well.. I love the storyline, the concept of time travel always fascinates me.. After fanatically following SOAW, this one comes next.. Yey!

I think Park Eun Bin (Queen Seon deok) is the female lead, so the leads should be familiar with each other. She also did a cameo on Dream High as grown up Hyesung.
I loved ProDai, after I heard about the casting I'm glad Dramabeans has a news article up already so I could find out more about the Korean adaptation.
Yes, the Japanese version was frustrating, but I appreciated the youthful cheer, friendships, and the journey of what it actually means to love someone- the buildup made it all so satisfying in the end. I had never bawled so much for a drama before (and somehow the Japanese dramas are the ones that hits me hardest, but that's just personal taste) as the two friends kept on missing the mark with each other.

I thought it was frustrating *good* rather than frustrating *bad*. Frustrating good because you see how much he hadn't tried the first time and how much he wanted to succeed, which was a kind of character growth. But then I'm more of a story nerd than the average... so I put up with a lot of things the average reader/viewer doesn't if I see that the story *meant* to evoke a feeling or if I get to see a character change despite the fact you want to strangle them now.
I think J-dramas hit my heart harder in the deep emotional state. It's because they try to understand the characters and don't pit them as evil against each other, or manufacture a plotline as much. (Also mostly film in advance which means the editing tends to be tighter.) Crying Out Love in the Center of the World was better in the J-version because it took time to develop the characters, look at the dept of their feelings and relationships through those feelings and trying to understand each other again and again... somehow that creates a warmth...
I think the only writer that has gotten close to that is the Writer of Alone in Love, but still, I prefer a Japanese melodrama, if I have to have one over a K-drama.
Prop dai was also damned funny too... don't know if anyone remembers that. I fear for it if they take out the humor... the humor made the fantasy better because it didn't take itself seriously, almost nodding to the fact that it knew it was a cheesy set up.

Agree...Park Eun Bin would be perfect...I've seen most of YSH's work (from movies to MVs to dramas) & the actress he seems to have the most chemistry with (& comfort) is PEB. I would like to see her get offered the part. If not, however, YSH could still pull it off, as he is a very talented actor.

Ahhhh, an adaption of something i've watched ey? I actually haven't seen Yoo Seung-ho act in anything suprise suprise but i think i'll defintiely watch him in this? I wonder how it will be adapted because even though it wasn't one of my favourite or even that memorable of a drama, i remember it had the ability to pull at my heart on occasions, now who shall play the female lead? :)

Ahh, I agree with somebody with comment who talks about actress Park Eun Bin should get this lead role, because I think it'd be GOOD idea for both of them to work together for this drama, ofc. I pray for Park Eun Bin for this, but NOT other actresses, kekeke. ;)
