Yoo Ah-in returns to dramaland?

girlfriday: Somebody pinch me. Is Yoo Ah-in returning to television?
javabeans: But… Fashion King?! The show that died, launched a lawsuit alleging plagiarism, and then slunk away when Cinderella Man flopped spectacularly?
girlfriday: Well apparently it didn’t die. It hasn’t been confirmed, but he’s rumored to be cast as the lead, and the drama is slated to premiere on SBS in March, following Salaryman. I thought when I first read the title that it’d be more like Yoo Ah-in the model, not Yoo Ah-in the small-time clothing vendor (apparently the character opens up a little stand in Dongdaemun Market and works his way up from nothing).
javabeans: Uh-oh. That brings out the Cinderella Man flashbacks. If he has a twin who is the chaebol owner of the biggest fashion company in the country, I’ll be thinking that lawsuit was dropped prematurely.
girlfriday: I really hope not. But what’s with all the pretty boy shop owners of late? Between this, the ramyun shop and the veggie shop, I’m kind of in drama heaven, but I draw the line at flower boy locksmiths.
javabeans: I feel like Yoo Ah-in wouldn’t agree to flower boy. He happens to be part of that posse, but you just know he’s dying to break free and do his rebel thing. Even if that means alternating commercial projects with the critically praised ones. Sort of like Lee Dong-wook.
girlfriday: At least he’s making some great choices lately. His movie Wandeuki is doing incredibly well, critically and in the box office.
javabeans: Yoo Ah-in also needs to take a cue from the Lee Dong-wook Handbook re: shower scenes. Just sayin’. Out of concern for his career, and all.
girlfriday: Yes. Exactly. For his own good. So Fashion King is written by Lee Sun-mi, of My Love in My Heart, Star In My Heart, What Happened in Bali, and Super Rookie.
javabeans: OH. Hm. Well then maybe it’ll be decent. If by decent we mean traditional rom-com. Wasn’t Star in My Heart based in the fashion world too? Although the darkness of What Happened in Bali offers a counterpoint to the fluff factor.
girlfriday: Well I hope that just because the repertoire is old-school doesn’t mean the drama will be too. Shin Se-kyung is in contention for the female lead, apparently, though less solid than the Yoo Ah-in news.
javabeans: Hm. I’m not sure how I feel about that. She’s good dramatically, but I haven’t seen her being cute and charming yet. Maybe it’s her time.
girlfriday: I have mixed feelings about her too. I’m curious to see if they’ve updated the premise any, or if it’s just going to be like every fashion drama ever.
javabeans: I am in conflict. Yoo Ah-in! (Awesome.) Associations to Cinderella Man and/or Style. (Not awesome.) Is this drama gonna have a split-at-birth, opposites-find-each-other, Parent Trap premise too?
girlfriday: Oh GOD PLEASE NO. Why does a fashion drama need birth secrets? Why?
javabeans: Although… TWO YOO AH-INS!
girlfriday: Oh. Hm. Am now having second thoughts.
javabeans: One can be gruff and hot, and the other can be fey and metro. It’ll be like Geo-ro and Yeo-rim, if they were the same person. Twice.
girlfriday: Now I’m thinking naughty thoughts.
javabeans: Doesn’t anything involving Yoo Ah-in involve naughty thoughts?
girlfriday: Is there more than one way to answer that question?
javabeans: Not honestly.

I will watch anything yoo ah in...and have so far...that includes painstakingly waiting for waeduki to come out with english subs
Yay so glad hes going to be back, i miss watching his projects
Yoo Ah In picks his roles carefully so i wouldnt miss this for the world

You definitely won't regret waiting for the subs. I saw it when it opened in Chicago (yeah, the 45 min drive to go to the theater where they do the US showings for korean movies in Chicago is totally worth it!) I really enjoyed it.
He's such a great actor, and so flippin cute/adorable/hot, I definitely won't miss this either!

Eh, I think this role really fits him?
I saw his reality show ( forgot the title,too lazy to google), and he said he's interested to fashion world.
So YAI as Dongdaemun's clothing vendor, who also is aspiring designer would be perfect for him.
Shin Sekyung, I saw her in Running Man, she can be cute..although, I wish they'd cast Moon Geunyeung.
( am imagining her calling him "oppa!" :P )

If it's Yoo Ah In, he can have twin brother, long lost half sister who they both fell in love with then find out they're not related then get cancer and miraculously get cured only to have the girl hit by a car and have amnesia and I'd still watch that drama.

yeah, i love yoo ah in drama the man who can't get married, he's good in that ,so does kim so eun. too bad the drama didn't get much attention, it's so refreshing, there's no angst or makjang whatsoever. the story's very close to everybody real life. you'll watch it and you'll love it.

YAI looks like Yoo Seungho a bit in that pic above. And I like both of these YOOs =) Though I'm happy that his movie hit blockbuster (5 millions++ viewers), I really miss seeing him on my small screen. He's got a good sense of fashion, heard/watched a lot how the media in Korea praise him, gosh you gotta see his Jack & Jill fashion spreads [http://micro.jackandjill.co.kr/#/main] ~~so I guess this drama suits him very well. But please don't make it a makjang!!

The writer's past works are not much impressive, so I doubt whether it is good for Yoo Ah In to join this drama. Also, the story of 'Fashion King' seems to be a bit strange. Actually, fashion is kind of personal taste and individual identity. So it is very challenging to make people appreciate fashion commonly in the same way.
BUT if Yoo Ah In decides to choose this drama, there is no reason for me, maybe everyone, to miss it. He is a very good and charming actor.

Yaaaaayy!!! (jumps so excitedly) I assume that he would able to join in this new drama by HONG SISTERS!!! I really love Hong Sisters drama, woooot ~ ~ (crossing fingers) I HOOOOOPE that he will work with Moon Geun Young for new drama, pllleeeaassee......hopefully so!

Oh no... apparently an idol (SNSD Member Yuri) is being considered for the female lead. I don't think she's ever acted before so it will be... interesting if she ends up getting the role. What are your guys' thoughts on this?

NO! Yuri from SNSD might and I think will take the lead...
WTH, she never acted but the producers think she will do well because she did good in a MV. Which is like 3 minutes...
Let's not forget that SNSD MVs almost never have storyline......... so yeah.
Oh why don't take a small role, why the lead...
I don't want to sound harsh but I hope these idols who are casted in the main roles all do ba din ratings to the others see a pretty and famous face isn't everything a drama needs!
I was so hopedul Jung So Min or any other young real actress would be cast.........
I see that it seems all 9 girls will take a lead role next year, huh?

But seriously, Yoo Ah-in shouldn't act opposite an idol. How come Shin Se-kyung didn't pull through? I know she's more into the serious stuff these days, but she has the acting prowess. I'm really hating on this idol-turned-actor thing. Only a quarter of a handful is actually decent enough to be even considered as a real actor. I hope a miracle will happen. I'll still watch it anyways, and pretend the girl is a real actor.
I keep getting Shin Se-kyung and Sung Si-kyung mixed up. Korean names are so similar.

I hope that's true. It wouldn't be fair for YAI to play opposite a rookie. Not that it's a bad thing. I'm sure there are a lot of very talented unknowns out there. But I want to see him play opposite someone who can carry the load equally with him, and not just a finger. The history of idol-turned-actor has not been a good one.
