Park Eun-bin romances Yoo Seung-ho (again) in Operation Proposal
by javabeans
A love interest has been cast for Yoo Seung-ho for his new drama Operation Proposal, and it’s a familiar co-star: Park Eun-bin, with whom he has acted multiple times in past projects. This is the time-traveling fantasy-romance drama adapted from Japan’s Proposal Daisakusen that’s set to air on cable channel TV Chosun in the new year.
Aw, that’s so cute: Some articles are calling it a reunion of “first loves,” since Park Eun-bin played Yoo Seung-ho’s very first love interest in 2007’s Legend, back when both actors were in their early teens (that drama filmed over two years so I believe they were barely adolescents when shooting it). He was the young King Dam-deok, while she played childhood sweetheart Kiha. They acted again in another sageuk project with 2010’s Queen Seon-deok, and followed that up in a music video for The One’s “Like a Star” with Taeyeon.
Operation Proposal starts out with our hero as an adult realizing that he’s in love with his friend just as she’s about to marry. Through a stroke of luck/fate/maaaagic, he gets sent back in time, and this time he’s determined to protect his first love.
Park plays that first love, whom the hero has cared for since their childhood days. They’re best buddies all the way from elementary school through university, and it looks like a case of missed timing for them, since she likes him but is unable to confess her feelings. In the end, she meets someone else and marries him instead.
Cute! It sounds like it’s got the potential to be comic fun but also potentially wring your heart at moments. And these are two child stars who have grown up so well, and into such solid actors. And to think, they’re both still teenagers — he’s 18, she’s 19.
Operation Proposal plans to premiere in February.
Below are the two actors from Legend, Queen Seon-deok, and the MV:

In real life, if they really get together and announce it, then I'll be releasing some sky lanterns in celebration.
It's not every day where you'll find someone who looks like a twin/kin or soul mate like these two when together.

It was an Asian hit? I didn't know that. I LOVED the drama and everything about it, but I was kind of sad that no one I knew had much of an interest in it.
CRIED EVERY EPISODE AFTER EP 3...or was it 2?

I kind of like Yamapi. Thing is I've only watched him in Nobuta wo Produce (which I hesitated to watch since, for some reason, I don't like Kame). I've planned to watch Proposal Daisakusen, but after reading this, I wonder if I ought to wait for this one so I can compare them without any sort of bias...?

You guys should watch Yamapi in "Kurosagi" - he did a fantastic job in it playing a sort of Dexter character.... He was also great in "Buzzer Beat" where he played a basketball player in a simple love story....two of my fav dramas of his....sadly Proposal Daisuken was NOT one of my fav dramas of his, actually not one of my fav jdramas either....I hope the Korean version is better!

Loved Proposal Daisakusen! I actually like Yamapi in this one, he was alright - he didn't bother me one bit in the drama. Most people hate Masami as well, but I liked her in this one, too. I don't find Yamapi to be that good of an actor (except in Nobuta, he was great in that), but I liked him in this role and in Buzzer Beat - maybe because the overall drama was good that I overlooked the "bad acting".

it wasn't such an "Asian' hit though if comparing to Hana Yori Dango. ProDai did considerably well in Japan, but it didn't attract that much buzz, unless you're into Yamapi and Jpop culture. lol, i kinda disagree that it left such a legacy, maybe for a Yamapi drama... but not in terms of jdoramas. still, it did well enough to have an SP.

ew. But her acting is so frozen. Yoo Seung Ho is great, but idk about her.
Also @mali about Korea destroying Proposal Daisakusen. It's not KOREA that is producing or destroying anything. Blame the writer. The director. The producer. The actors, whatever. But A WHOLE NATION? exaggeration can be insensitive.

I haven't watched either of these two leads in anything but i think i'll gladly watch this. I've seen the original japanese version (though i liked it, it's not that memorable imo, it was just amusing, sweet and sad at times) and i think that korean dramaland would be able to make it into something enjoyable.
And wow the leads are my age (well more like eun bin is), they seem younger than i'd expected but i suppose the drama focuses about 90% on their teenage years so all is good :D

Javabeans the concept of proposal daisakusen is not only fun and comic. It's a story about nostalgia, regrets, a story with a lot of poetry and emotion. It's a vibrant hommage at the masterpiece of shunji iwai The love letter (ex the scene of the gift in the library at the end of episode 2). I don't understand the fan of dramas nowadays ; they want only fluffy drama, comic and fun drama.
If a drama is sad or have angst, or family secret or death is immediately considered like crap. Beautiful and poetic drama like snow queen or spring waltz are underrated just because they are not fun or comic. The recent exemple is bachelor vegetable store. just because is not comic and fun like ramyun flower shop, is considered like crap.

I think you're conflating dramatic with makjang. It's a vast overstatement to say that anything angsty and dramatic is considered crap, because, well, just look around -- there are fans of every type of genre and story type.
Furthermore, by extension your statement suggests that all comic shows are well-received. HA! That's pretty far off the mark. Basically, we like shows that are well-written and well-executed, regardless of genre.
On the other hand: Part of the definition of makjang is that it relies on overused conflicts and forced plot logic to drive conflict in search of ratings, in which case the pejorative sentiment is entirely earned. Vegetable Store is not considered crap because it's not comic; the complaints against it are regarding its plot contrivances -- the excessive mirroring of Baker King and its potential for makjang excess, both of which suggest a lack of creativity. Mind you, it's still got the potential to be a fun show, which is why we and a lot of others are still keeping an eye on it.

You're right, I think i have a problem to differenciate Makjang and dramatic drama ; for exemple for me makjang is like american soap and telenovela and i don't see snow queen or spring waltz or a thoushand days of promise like soap or telenovela (it's like compare fast and furious and once upon a time in america for me).
I am screenwriter and filmaker in france and for me the contruction of the story, the use of the music, the use of the space, the talent of the actor and the cinematography (the urban poetry with perfect use of the city for the mood) in kdrama and jdrama is comparable of the best movie of cinema ; (bad drama with bad editing an bad acting exist like bad movie)
the only problem is the use of bad camera numeric who give a bad texture of image. With the new camera like canon 5d, RedOne and arri alexa the things change (bachelor vegetable store, city hunter, padam padam, what's up, scent of a woman, tree with deep roots).
Melodrama is a genre in cinema who give great movie. Then i don't understand the reticence for melodrama in this blog.
If i understand what you say javabeans if the story is logic and well executed it's not a makjang. Even with birth secret, death, sadness and others ?
What the best exemple of makjang with overused conflicts and no logic plots ?
And exemple of a good makjang ?

Ramyun Shop lost its hold on me in the middle. I'm probably one of the few, if not the only one, unimpressed with the drama's totality.
ProDai had this very distinct Jdorama tone that i'm sure will be lost in the Kdrama (which is completely understandable). for me though, i think i'll like the Kdrama more just cause I couldn't stand Nagasawa... and YSH is miles and miles and miles a better actor than Pi.

The only reason I'm on the cusp of dropping Bachelor Vegetable Store is because it was obvious that Jin-shim would take Ga-on's place. As a plot point, I felt it was TOO obvious. Also, I would prefer that Jin-shim/Ga-on's family had demanded a paternity test. Those are holes that I find irritating. The only reason I may not drop it is because I like the relationship between Tae-yang and Tae-in.

Can't wait to see this take of Proposal Daisakusen! The only worry I have is that this will be the usual 16+ episodes. The Japanese version was 10 or 11, and it kinda got repetitive by the end (I mean, how many times can he go back in time to change history), so having 16+ episodes of that get really tiresome.
I wonder if the guy will also have a catchphrase.. "Hallelujah Chance!"

Very smart move on Yoo Seung Ho and his management's part in offering the role to Park Eun Bin (if that was the case). I've seen most of his dramas, movies, and MV's...and she is by far the one he seems to feel most comfortable with... I can't wait to see it. It's on my 'must see' list!
One thing's for sure, if YSH is in it, it'll be very good - specially if he's the lead actor this time around. In all of his works, you can't help, but pay attention to him when he's on screen...he's a 'screen stealer'... & not just because of his looks, but because he's a talented actor. No wonder he's considered one of the top five most saught-after actors by SK directors and producers alike.
Thanks javabeans for posting the news. Great writing as usual!
