Cast and preview revealed for tvN’s Shut Up: Flower Boy Band

Finally, the cast has been revealed for tvN’s new drama, Shut Up: Flower Boy Band, which is the second entry in its Oh! Boy series and replaces ramyun shop boys with rocker musicians. And while I was iffy on this show, I have to say I find the preview intriguing — it’s definitely got an interesting gritty vibe that I’m digging.
There’s been a name change from the previous Eye Candy, and while that’s probably an appropriate description, the new one does capture the flavor more accurately, it seems. And by flavor I mean bolder and more aggressive. But it looks like the older title isn’t entirely dead; the “Eye Candy” moniker is the name of the high school band at the drama’s center.
The production has been a little cagey with the casting news, and actually didn’t reveal the members until the drama’s first preview aired today. In the lead role is Sung Joon, at top, whom you may recognize as the younger brother from Lie To Me. Not the greatest job to have on the resumé (and he had his awkward moments), but I’m actually liking this casting; when he wasn’t being petulant and bratty, he was quite adorable.
In order of the photo below, the cast comprises: Kim Min-seok, L, Sung Joon, Lee Hyun-jae, and Yoo Min-kyu.
- In the drama, Sung Joon plays the band leader and vocalist, Kwon Ji-hyuk;
- L, member of pop group Infinite, plays Lee Hyun-soo, the second guitarist;
- Lee Hyun-jae is the real-life drummer of rock band Mate, which is one of my favorite Korean rock bands; he plays Jang Do-il, the band’s drummer;
- Kim Min-seok found fame with the reality program Superstar K 3, and is cast as Seo Kyung-jong on keyboard;
- and Yoo Min-kyu was the lucky participant in reality audition program Flower Boy Casting: Oh! Boy picked to make his drama bow as Kim Ha-jin.
Shut Up: Flower Boy Band will be a 16-episode “youth romance drama” that hits airwaves on January 30. Let’s hope it rocks.

I don't know him. But I wanted to add that L is already a pretty popular name in the manga/anime/j-dorama world, and that's already pretty hard to live up to. He really should consider Myungsoo. Although, heh, Park Myungsoo anyone? XD

Pretty much all Infinite fans call him Myungsoo. I've yet to see someone seriously call him L. Even his members don't on TV shows. Lol.
I think eventually if he keeps acting more, he'll go by his real name, Kim Myungsoo.

Yeah, I prefer calling him Myungsoo too...I guess it's because when he's "L", he's the cool, "manufactured" handsome pop idol, whereas when he's "Myungsoo", he's the real him, and he's more open. It's hard to explain; you'll know if you watch Infinite's variety shows such as Sesame Player.
Which is why, my ultimate bias is not L, but Myungsoo. :)

OMG, MYUNGSOO...I'm definitely all over this drama....man tvN knows how to draw in an audience....it's one thing to have pretty boys but to add an idol pretty boy...I'm sold..I haven't seen him act in his Japanese drama so i hope he does good.

What's up with all these "Flower Boys" drama?
"Boys over Flower", "Flower Boy Ramyun Shop", and now "Shut Up: Flower Boy Band". I seem to hear the term "Flower boys" quite frequently and it usually associates with a group of guys.
What's the significance over this term? I would think the term applies to "pretty boys" if taken literally.

Flower Boy is a series concept from tvN, so Ramyun Shop and Shut Up/Band are related - not in story, but in brand. http://www.dramabeans.com/2011/08/jung-il-woos-new-drama-flower-boy-ramyun-shop/
And yes, the Korean term "flower boy" is analogous to the English term "pretty boy." Same usage, same implications. I'm pretty sure the Korean usage of flower to denote anything beautiful (hence the saying, "More beautiful than a flower") pre-dates Hana Yori Dango, although I'm sure that influence didn't hurt.

I am with you in this. Hana Yori Dango introduced me to asian dramas and movies, well jdramas and kdramas. It's still the best and no 1 in my list. I am Maotsujun(Jun and Mao) baited. I super love them- the best onscreen and offscreen couple for me.

Back to the this upcming drama, I look foward to see what this flower boys can offer. I am pretty in love with the Flower boys in FBRS so it may be hard to replace them with this new flower boys.(I am sad that FBRS is ending) I guess I will just wait and see what this musical youth drama has in store.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes jdoramas and MatsuJun here in dramabeans coz' I thought mostly people here only watch kdramas ^_^

I'm pretty happy with this casting news. It's not Jung Il-woo, of course, but then, who is? And I've always had a little bit of an (inappropriate) crush on L (a much younger man). He's so awkward and adorable in real life (well, variety real life). And it looks fun!

He's adorably awkward in real life, which is why I love his on stage presence, it's so different to his real life personality. I don't know if you watched the Japanese drama Jiu, but he did a pretty good job playing a psycho killer. His stares could sent a chill down your bones. Lol. I think he's got the best acting skills out of all the members of Infinite.

@carrie: I would like to give credit (due or otherwise) to Hana yori dango for popularising, if not coining, the term. Who can forget that the almighty F4 standard for Flower 4, the guys who are prettier than flowers. But then again, Japanese don't use the term 花男子 that much, unlike Korean's usage of 꽃남자/꽃미남...

Yes ! i knew that face was familiar. Color of woman : Quite fun show if you manage to ignore the glasses without...euh... glasses on actors noses : So weird and distractive.
And i totally agree, that would have been an ideal part for No Min Woo : I listen to " Heartbeat " everyday. On the other hand he must be tired of playing musicians all the time and i'm impatient to see him in Full House 2. ( Crossing fingers hoping it won't be a deception ).

Smart casting decision snagging Myungsoo (L) for this drama. Infinite's popularity is definitely skyrocketing in Korea, and Myungsoo is one of the more popular members. Very very excited about this drama. Can't wait till it starts airing!
Just hoping Infinite doesn't have a comeback for awhile, their crazy schedule on top of a drama filming schedule would be intense for Myungsoo, he's already exhausted from the crazy year he had in 2011.

I definitely agree with this. INFINITE has garnered LOADS of attention and I only knew about this and will probably watch it only for Myungsoo /cough. heh Inspirit~
Though schedules of actors and idols tend to be jam-packed. I just hope he doesn't get sick trying to juggle both 'cause I can see that happening. Their solo concert is in February so I have no idea how this is going to work out for him. Are they filming as the series goes along?

I'm so excited for this! I can't breathe. I have high hopes for this because the first of this flower-boy-themed dramas turned out spectacularly well (FBRS) so I hope it only gets better. :)

He was also in White Christmas as well. He was better in their than in Lie To Me, even though he barely showed emotion at times. BUT eeeek I cannot wait. So, many new drama's to watch :D

It seems to me that cable channels really know how to market their targets... Compared to the Big Three, they're more marketing-oriented, considering much more the possibility of second seasons, wonderful casting and ad campaign...

I would like to know, too.
I think in shows like this, the female lead makes or breaks the show. She has to have that something that all the boys would fall in love with. She usually isn't just another pretty girl.

I was quite taken aback initially with the Shut Up! name, sounds so dreadfully rude and in your face and, dare I say, even worse than the Soo-too-pid....shut up flower boy band sounds like the title is defeating the purpose of the show, who wants a silent band right? LOL then I looked carefully and noticed the colon, so I think that has to be the band's name. I think it's odd to have a verb as a band name, so I suggest a new change of names to:
The Shut Uppers
The Shutter Ups
or, in the tradition of The Stupid:
The Dumb

The orginal korean title for 'shut up' is DakChiGo. Actually this terminalogy was created/used in Korea dcinside site many years ago from what I remember. So the title means 'Shut up everybody because Flower boy band is THE best!!'

I haven't watched any drama in a while but I'll be sure to watch this because of Myungsoo (L)!
Hope someone else will sub this because the Infinite subbing teams already have a full plate what with all the other shows Infinite have. Though maybe an increase in staff will do them good :) Their subs are really good.
Now as for his acting, his acting in Jiu wasn't so bad. And he was even handpicked for the role. So i'm excited to see how he will do here.
I wonder what type of character he will have here? Because he is totally 4D in real life, has a sort of "cold" aura but is totally goofy.
I also like how 2 of the things I like about him are present here:
1. Playing the guitar - can he just have a guitar attached to his hands all the time? And can he just sing while playing the guitar please? Because I really really like his voice.
2. Photography - now his dream will come true. haha.
I wonder if they'll let him wear plaid all the time?

Well, I guess maybe they're going for the same this as with Ramyun Shop: Show us a snippet of the series only showing what we could guess from the title (pretty boys with instruments/ramyun) and then astound us with its heart and awesomeness! At least I hope so!!!

well, as the eye candy quotient has been more than fulfilled, I guess I'll be tuning in :D Sung Joon and that deep voice of his can serenade me to sleep any day. and L is a good excuse to watch anything - such a cutie

OMG!!.. I sooo searched this after seeing preview @ the end of the Flower boy and Ramyun shop.. since I can't read Hangul I was like.. Sung Joon's new drama but nooo results..
Looking forward to this one.. hope IT ROCKES>>> REALLY (Mary stayed out night) anyways.. I liked the drummer boy .. he is cute ^__^.. thanks for the info..
