Scenes from newly premiered KBS drama Brain
by javabeans
Neurosurgery drama Brain began its run today on KBS, and while I haven’t gotten around to checking out the premiere yet, here are some posters and stills to mark the series launch.
The posters do a pretty good job of telling us that this is going to be a Serious Medical Drama — rather than, say, romance central a la Grey’s Anatomy — with a rivalry driving it. Actually, make that multiple rivalries: In the top poster, Shin Ha-kyun (The Front Line) faces off with Jo Dong-hyuk (Yacha), but in the one directly below it’s Jung Jin-young he’s paired against. Add do that Choi Jung-won (Wish Upon a Star), who may have romantic storylines with one or more of the male leads.
(And yes, that IS former child actor Lee Hyun-woo, now 18, in the stills below. He’s showing some loyalty to the PD and writer, who produced his high school drama God of Study last year, and has a special guest appearance in Brain playing a student with dreams of becoming a doctor. He meets Choi Jung-won’s character when he delivers food — a part-time job — to the hospital and gets a look at the life of a neurosurgeon, which sparks his interest, which is fanned by the encouragement she gives him. Fun trivia bit for God of Study fans: Brain takes place at the fictional Chunha University Hospital. You may recall that the top university that the high schoolers were so determined to make it into was Chunha University. Cheeky.)
The drama reportedly boasts a fairly large-scale budget, with the hospital set costing 4 billion won ($3.5 million) and covering 800 pyong in area (just under 30,000 sf). Dayum. I guess it wouldn’t be practical to take over a real working hospital for a drama, but that’s a lot of money just for set dressing, which also includes real medical equipment.
Brain is a Monday-Tuesday series, but this week aired both Episodes 1 and 2 on Monday; thanks to a sports game pre-emption, no episodes will air tomorrow. The regular schedule resumes next week.

Alas, this serious medical drama will always be the show in which neither The Hand Towel nor Lee Sang Yoon appeareth.
Yes - that kid from ROI is in it! He was part of my favorite couple in it. I guess it is rare in a sageuk that a kid appears in as many episodes that he did. Usually they get replaced by the adult versions.

Thank you.
Fyi...the residents there are pretty cute. It includes the cutey pie secretary from Lie To Me.
Who is not cute? Tae Kyung the cheating husband from A Thousand Kisses is in as a ? 3rd year resident. I wonder if he'll play a good guy as he was another cheater in I believe in men.
What did I do wrong that I have to watch him in 3 dramas this year? Aigoo. Aigoo :-(

So I guess she'll be torn between the older, honourable serious guy, and the younger, arrogant yet charming cutie? If PSH were playing the younger guy, he'd DEFINITELY get the girl. This one...hm, I'm not so sure.....

Just saw the first two eps. I'm underwhelmed. There were captivating moments - Jung Jin Young in general and those with Shin Ha Kyun, but I wish there were more scenes of just the two of them, maybe with Jo Dong Hyuk.
But definitely not Choi whatshername. She's cried already. Her character is waaay overly emotional, especially for a doctor. Presumably she's the candy who'll reform Shin ha Kyun's character and over whom he and Jo Dong Hyuk's characer will fight. Blah.
Shin Ha Kyun's character reminds me of Maru from CYHMH.

I'm underwhelmed too.
I'll keep watching for now however, for Lee Sung-min and Park Cheol-ho.
Lots of cheesy God of Study references though, like Bong-go and his mother, and in the stills above we have Chan-doo riding Baek-hyun's (Yoo Seung-ho) chicken delivery scooter. Cheesy, but sweet at the same time.

The actress (Choi Jung-Woo?) reminds me of Lee Young Ae in Medical Brothers (also a drama about surgery about 15 years ago I think).

Oh.. I think I know which hospital they are filming from. The rooftop overlooks JW Marriott Hotel, and there's only one in Seoul. And I'm pretty sure I saw a hospital almost across/near that hotel which is St. Mary something hospital... I think I have a it somewhere on my 3400 photo count of my summer trip.
That kid from GoS is cute, and if he manages to pick the right project, he will join the list of our ICOMYM. With Yoo Seung Ho still being the flagship hottie.

On the other hand: YAY! for clarinetists! B-flats unite! I hope he is good. I may just watch for a nice little break-down where apparently the power of the woodwind allows a brain to float out of its box.

I saw the preview after Poseidon and I was like wow.. That is some SERIOUS Medical drama.. reminds me of Iryu and Code Blue but Code Blue focused more on the young interns becoming flight doctors, whereas this drama is like a Korean version of Iryu, basically rivalry between the doctors, some tough surgeries and some major angst, drama, emotion.. etc. you all get the point.
I may try this if I have time, and it looks super interesting, but being that i'm not a korean speaker, trying to put the story and the medical lingo together is going to make it twice as hard to watch, I am a japanese speaker and watching Iryu was difficult itself since I'm no Med student/doctor so I have to listen carefully to get the full jist of everything.
But anyways, Thanks for posting!

I watched it - and I did NOT have high expectations of it - even though I have a high regard for all the actors. I think it was just the whole recasting and recasting jumble.
But MY GOODNESS. The acting is definitely superb and it shows. I don't know if it'll show in the ratings, but there's something about Shin Ha Kyun's acting that makes it enthralling.
As for the drama - I'm done with episode one, and it's got me invested enough to try episode two. There's a tense yet charismatic vibe with just the right amount of realistic good charmed people that makes this drama appealing.
I'm in. My recommendation to others? If you ever enjoyed the Japanese drama Iryu, I think this is a definite must-try. If you liked New Heart, I definitely say this is a must must try. I have a big thing for medical dramas and some (like GH2) disappointed, but I think this just might be a catch.
Oh, and Choi Jung Won's eyes? Aren't they a drama themselves or what? lol
