Medical drama Brain’s teasers and stills
by javabeans
With KBS medical drama Brain about a week from its premiere, here are the drama’s first two teasers, as well as character stills of the main cast of neurosurgeons featuring Shin Ha-kyun, Jung Jin-young, and Choi Jung-won.
The way this drama handled its casting process has been pretty clunky (not to mention controversial), which had turned me off the show from the start. Having seen the teasers, though, you can see that they’re clearly going for suspenseful and dramatic, in which case it makes sense to opt for a serious film actor like Shin Ha-kyun (The Front Line) over the younger Lee Sang-yoon (The Duo). And Choi Jung-won (Wish Upon a Star) has been a leading actress for longer than new face Yoon Seung-ah (Playful Kiss), even if I think she’s much more appealing in lighter comedies than serious dramas.
All that said, it doesn’t excuse the poor way the drama dumped its first cast, and begs the question: If you say these actors were all wrong for the parts, why cast them in the first place?
Brain is doing something a bit unusual for premiere week, in airing Episodes 1 and 2 on the same night, Monday. That’s because the following day is going to be pre-empted for soccer, so they’re trying to get the jump rather than falling an episode behind schedule. With Mondays and Tuesdays pretty packed with programming, a new show can’t afford to lose interest, so hopefully they’ll hook viewers with the double header. Medical dramas aren’t really my bag, but they do have some dynamic actors at play here with Shin Ha-kyun and Jung Jin-young, both of whom are pretty damn charismatic.
Brain comes from God of Study’s team, PD Yoo Hyun-ki and writer Yoon Kung-ah. It follows Poseidon and airs its first two episodes on November 14.

OMG, I'm sooooo in! Jung Jin Young? Hells Yeah! I haven't seen Shin Ha Kyun since Save the Green Planet, but he was great in that & JSA. These two men are this show's bona fides for me.
And the clincher was Jo Dong Hyuk, the Yacha hottie!
Salivate!
The production quality - at least for the trailers - is soooo fantastic.

I love Jung Jin-young too, but this is not as appealing to me as it should be. I loved Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and the much more present day Grey's Anatomy, but this? No. Even the main characters do not appeal to me. Maybe I will give it chance though so I can say I did.

I share your sentiments. Jung Jin-young is awesome-sauce, and he looks mighty fine in those pictures. He has this rugged yet playful look, and most importantly, he can act!
Then there's Shin Ha-kyun! He looks good but the real question would be "when does he not?"
These two actors I love and know can act, but Choi Jung-won, I'm not too sure about but my excitement cannot be dampened!

shin ha kyun did a movie where he switched brains with byun hee-bong. gory and marvelous! dude is best when doing freakish things, so....to be selfish i hope they make him some drug-addicted doc who operates under the influence (propofol is the buzzword now, why not), so jung jin young has to bitch him out or something.

knowing Korea's super anti-drug culture, I really can't see this happening, though it would be fun to watch.

This looks really good actually. What is it about?
The new cast is MUCH better than the original cast. Even with SSH out. Yeah, he is better looking. But honestly, I don't see a doctor in him.

The lead wants to be head of the hospital or something like that. I am watching it whether it'll get subs is another issue.
At least it's something on Mon and Tue-there is nothing else to watch anyway.

Will the Brain be a hit or miss?
Can it beat the following drama in ratings which also air on Monday-Tuesday?
1. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (tvN)
2. Thousand Day Promise (SBS)
Q: Will I watch?
A: If I am bored to death.
Brain Notes found at asianmediawiki.com/Brain_(Korean_Drama) states:
* On September 20, 2011 Lee Sang-Yun, Yoon Seung-Ah, Lee Hyeon-Jin, & Kim Soo-Hyun were removed from the drama series. The four actors and actress had their first script reading on September 17, 2011. Staff believed those actors did not fit their characters due to age, acting, personality differences.

Different time slot Flower Boy is on later and on cable. I don't think Brain is insane enough to compete with ATDP anyway.

KBS drama management has recently been bad (Spy Myung Wol), and now Brain. Been enjoying SBS dramas more lately. On another note, was wondering why Hong sisters picked to work with KBS for their next drama.

I like the male cast members so I may give this a shot. Not a fan of the female lead and from the preview, she has the same blank expession from KotW.

So I've just finished watching the entire 20 episodes in 2 days and I couldn't stop watching after each episode. Compared to Sign, I've felt that this is much better - the reality, the characters, the emotions. I'm drawing toward the Korean dramas that can be serious but yet, it provides big lessons on love, relationships and life. It does not make love as the center of the story but yet we feel love all the way through 20 episodes..
