Light and Shadow’s groovy ’60s-themed promos
by javabeans
Posters and teasers are out for MBC’s special 50th-anniversary drama production, Light and Shadow, which follows the lives of entertainers through the ’60s, ’70s, all the way up to present day. As if you couldn’t tell from the clothes. Groovy.
(Although, does anything else think the costumes and hairdos are straight out of a stage production about the 1960s, rather than an actual, realistic period look? I’m half-expecting them to burst out into a chorus from Hairspray, or some such.)
The first video clip below isn’t so much a trailer as it is an introduction to the concept of the show, explaining that all the beloved hits of the bygone eras will be revived for the drama. I can see that being a huge blast of welcome for the older Korean set, but I wonder how that’ll translate to the younger viewers, both at home and abroad.
For them, the story will have to carry the bulk of the appeal, with Ahn Jae-wook (I Love You), Nam Sang-mi (Life Is Beautiful), Lee Pil-mo (Believe in Love), and Sohn Dam-bi (Dream) playing showbiz performers of varying levels of fame. I love Nam Sang-mi and find both men all right, depending on the role; it’s Sohn Dam-bi I don’t love, but I can see the reason for her casting giving her singing-dancing background.
The drama premieres on November 28, and will run for 50 episodes on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Oh man! I thought that this was really gonna be a super melo angsty period drama given the title. I was thinking along the lines of Giant or Fashion 70s (which I both love)...but man! This looks like it could be really fun. The better english name for this would probably be Light[S] and Shadow[S]. Light and Shadow makes it sound like a tear jerker.
I love me some Nam Sang Mi and Lee Pil Mo and I think Son Dam Bi's role really suits her this time round. But I am still really hesitant. This could be really cheesy bad or cheesy good. Please don't let it suck MBC. Oh, and bring on the trot!

Good point with the translation/cultural crossover. It DOES sound more related to show perfs and stage lighting rather than the good or evil of life, etc, melo, etc,

A better way of explaining the mixup would be that the title refers literally to lights and not to light's connotations of good, purity, whatever the fuck else light connotes. Haha.

Gee! Where did they dig up the costumes? From someones trunk?.So funny! Reminds me of when I was a teen-ager wearing the flip bouffant hairdo and doing the dances from that era. Also, my husband wore the polyester suits and the bell bottoms pants. I wore short skirts and platform heels which have comeback today in fashion.Ah, the memories. We thought we were cool and groovy.Going to hide the photos from my kids.
Drama looks really cute and funny.Hope it's not a tear jerker.

The subject has nothing to do with the drama Lights and Shadows.
I was at (http://www.dramastyle.com/) and I spotted this Korean drama title is TV Novel Bok-hee (Korean Drama 2011) aka TV Novel: Dear My Sister, and its on Network:
KBS2 - Runtime is Monday-Friday (a week day drama) as stated by (http://asianmediawiki.com/TV_Novel:_Dear_My_Sister).
The plot stated by asianmediawiki is this:
Bok-Hee (Jang Mi In Nae) is a girl who studies very hard and works at a brewery. When she was 5-years-old, her parents' divorced and Bok-Hee then lived with her mother. Her father died in a coal mine accident.
Bok-Hee came to brewery company Dukchun with her younger stepbrother after her mother married Song Byung-Man, the owner of Dukchun. Bok-Hee addresses her mother as "aunt," to avoid getting her mother into trouble. Finally, people learn that Bok-Hee is the daughter. Her stepbrother is sent off to an orphanage and Bok-Hee leaves for Seoul.
Joon-Mo (Ryu Tae-Joon) worked as a stuntman, but due to injury had to quit his job and come to Dukchun to work as a temporary teacher. Joon-Mo meets Bok-Hee for the first time when she peers through a classroom window in which he teaches. Joon-Mo sees the passion in her eyes and becomes her mentor.
According to dramastyle.com this drama is about about Han Bok-hee from the 1960 ~ 70s who overcomes all hardships and succeeds.
I clicked on it, and I am trying to watch it. I just cannot tune in to watch TV Novel Bok-hee (Korean Drama 2011) aka TV Novel: Dear My Sister Han Bok-hee life from the 1960 - 70s. I guess TV Novel: Dear My Sister not for me,
Therefore, I do not know if I can tune in to watch Lights and Shadows either.
The plot stated by (http://asianmediawiki.com/Lights_and_Shadows_(Korean_Drama) is this:
"Lights and Shadows" depicts the life of Kang Ki-Tae (played by Ahn Jae-Wook) - described as Korea's first entertainer. Kang Ki-Tae debuted in an American military base stage and worked in the show business during the 1960s. Storyline covers periods from the 1960s to the present day. Various historical incidents like the Vietnam War, May 16 military coup d'etat and the assassination of Korean President Park Chung-hee ......
P.S. I know that these 2 dramas have no relation to each other whatsoever. Its just that I might not be able to tune at all the history of the 1960's -70's.

Hey! Sung Ji-ru! I wouldn't mind this if I get to hear some 60s, 70s, and 80s music from guys like the Beatles, ABBA, Men at Work (preferably the song Land Down Under), eddi Money, etc. Hahaha.

Stills remind me more of the '70s and not the '60s. Interesting to see what their time era machine looks like for this. Having seen pictures, and lived through it, I do not remember the loud suits coming in until the 1970s. Hippie style, yep! but none of the pictures reflect that? Ah but the music more!! Spinners - 4 Tops - Jan & Dean - Roy Orbison - Cher, wonderful endless list

Cher Cher Cher! The South Pacific loves share. But not as much as we love ABBA! Hahaha. The Jackson Five anyone? Boney M? Chuck Berry *cough*MartyMcFly*cough*? Endless indeed. If anything, I'll be watching this for the music.

Considering this drama is about performers (or those trying to be), I would LOVE this drama to be a musical and have them burst out singing randomly.
Not that it will happen..... but it would be awesome.

The plaid suits are definitely 70's...my boyfriend had two of them. But, there were "in" for about a minute and a half, lol. He left the country for a year, and came back and wanted to wear one somewhere, and his sisters tackled him and wouldn't let him out of the house, lol.
The 60's "flip" looks realistic to me, I have pics of my sister and I with the same "do", I was about 8 I think.
Did Leisure Suits not make it to Korea? If so, Korea was truly blessed to miss that fad, lol.

Wow. It's exactly like American movie "Hairspray" -- I like this poster, keke. I think that'd be cool to watch at 60s/70s drama. I hope that this drama would be GOOD for scriptwriter who writes with creative story, mm.
*praying for scriptwriter*

oho.. Lee Pil Mo is not smiling in all the teasers/posters.. Is he an antagonist? I want to watch him act, but am not sure whether I am able to watch 60/70s type of drama.. So far, the only one I am able to watch from start to finish is Capital Scandal. The rest, i abandoned after a few episodes.. Ngee..

Did long hairy sideburns ever make it over there? Ahn Jaewook looks so funny, but I can't believe they haven't turned Sunny the hit movie into drama yet. Nice music suggestions everyone:D
