Tree With Deep Roots’ posters, teasers, stills
by javabeans
Boss is out; make way for the king. Sejong the Great, to be more specific, the subject of SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Tree With Deep Roots, which will be making its bow this week.
King Sejong famously invented the Hangul alphabet system and fostered literary and technological advancements. He has, therefore, been depicted a number of times in film and television, a recent example being KBS’s 2008 drama King Sejong the Great. What sets Tree With Deep Roots apart is its source material, being adapted from a popular novel of the same name, as well as its production team: PD Jang Tae-yoo directed the hit drama War of Money and the lush sageuk series Painter of the Wind, while writers Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-hyun gave us Royal Family and Queen Seon-deok.
Song Joong-ki plays the young Yi Do (his name before becoming King Sejong) who struggles to be the antithesis of his harsh father and turns to his scholarly pursuits. As an adult, he’s portrayed by Han Seok-kyu, while Shin Se-kyung and Jang Hyuk round out the main cast.
The drama premieres October 5. Watch the trailers below (although to be honest, I’m not too excited by them, which seem so…small (in scale) comparative to the hype around this drama).

Won't have time to check it out now, but I hope it's good. Looking forward to Song Joong-ki's acting. And trailers have mislead us before (see: City Hunter)

the seven minute teaser is what got me hyped:
SJK is killing me in the teaser already. So sad he's only playing the younger version of the king.

Not trying to be stupid...but my first impression of Jang Hyuk's snake-like figure on his traditional (insert correct word for the hat-thingy...I do not mean to offend anyone with not knowing the object's name!) reminds me of the Seattle Mariner's logo, which is my hometown's baseball team.

I'm so watching this. I've been watching Bu Bu Jing Xin so I am in a very 'historical drama' mode. Looks way intense and with such a great cast I feel like this one's gonna be really good! Very excited.
Also beautiful poster... that might be my next desktop :)

Wow, what a gorgeous poster! Look at Shin Se Kyung's face, so lovely! Does anyone know just how many episodes SJK will be in? Darn it, why can't he just be in the whole show? I'm not even a crazy fan of his, but when it comes to sageuks I know one thing -- hot guys make the historical political games a lot easier to understand, somehow : D

Oohh oohh ohh Jang Hyuk is a royal guard in this drama right? If my limited knowledge of korean traditional garbs serves me right, that uniform is for royal guards right? MEANING: He's going to be strutting his sexy body again cos you know, he has to be fit and all hihihihi..

Agree on the small scale, though it may be a plus for what they're going for. Something like a polished bunch of intimate events in the courts and periphery. Like some 90s BBC historical drama...before all the sex, hotness, hip factor, and eye candy became the norm:P

I highly recommend watching the 7 minute trailer that has been posted in the comments above. Jang Hyuk is projecting a kind of Kevin Spacey vibe from the Usual Suspects in one of the scenes, where he's pretending to be hurt and then suddenly stands up straight and summersaults over a wall....am loving it already! Hopefully he's not evil in this, but honestly, I would eat him up even if he was! Go JH! :)

No matter what people gonna say, I will definitely watch this drama. I mean, two writers of Queen Seon Duk, plus the mighty sageuk Jang Hyuk, for sure it is a must see for me!

sigh, I bet I'll start watching this just to see the first few eps with Song Joong Ki and then get suckered in to watching the whole thing as was the case with Will it Snow for Christmas as SKKS.....but the drama does look mighty interesting with a very different premise and also a very hefty cast other than Shin Se Kyung....and I've never seen Joong Ki do something this serious before and am totally loving it

My interest in Saguek dramas just vanished after Song Il Gook's Jumong ended. I think Jumong was the "legendary" Saguek and the only Saguek that totally truly grab my attention no matter how long that drama was. I did like Queen Seon Duk but it was kind of boring towards the end and the ending sucks.
Saguek dramas tend to have that same plot: court conspiracy, people trying to prevent the person next to the throne become a king, arrange marriage for the sake of power, villains trying to prevent the good guy/main lead from accomplishing something great and there's always that born on a certain day destined to do something great.
and this drama is probably the same one way or another. don't get me wrong guys, I love Jang Hyuk, the man can act and he's full of hotness of course, but man, may I see him NOT in traditional korean clothing.

All these sagueks ( dong yi, the great king sejong, jumong, queen suendok, emperor of the sea, king gwangwetto, etc etc).....all SERIOUSLY need to have a warning label/qualifier in huge print at the start of every episode with words to the effect that most are totally "99.9% FICTIONalised" !!!
And.....these dramas have unabashedly draw out the most blatant nationalistic fervour that seem to lurk in every korean soul, with their scriptwriters/directors indulging almost drunkenly in all sorts of petty and unjustified (?) bashing of those non-koreans, esp the japanese and the chinese. Worse, some events of real historical significance were grossly distorted and even deliberately twisted !
Granted that korea has been under the yolk of other nations in the past and bitterness and anger still simmer ( but which nations in the East have not suffered 'colonization'?).......so these dramas are anything but 'historical', haha
Creative license is fine but if liberty are taken to such a ridiculous level, then one shudder to think what sort of ' historical education' these dramas would impart to those unawary viewers, esp to their own korean viewers.

But isn't propaganda the point of these dramas anyway? The way I see it such approach is expected and approved by viewers. I don't think this type of tv shows aim to achieve authenticity.

propaganda IS NOT THE POINT OF SAGEUK. if you think historical dramas are made for the purpose of propaganda in Korea, you are seriously missing the point dude.

NO OFFENSE, but every Korean knows that this drama was based off of a book in Korea, so of course it is based off of the true story but not everything here is 100% true!. and most of what they say is true. it's not 99% fictionalized when most of the characters are true, (all the fake ones die off at the end of the drama SORRY FOR SPOILERS)
and understand that King SEJONG is indeed the creator of Hangeul, which this drama is mostly trying to point out. if you're saying this is 99% fictionalized, then you're just blatantly saying that the possibility of Hangeul's creation is twisted? What the hell is your opinion of what is 1% true? Please be at least specific, and at least know more about the work before commenting stuff. You could have written a much more better, non-offensive comment if you have at least researched your basics
