Tree wallops Man in the ratings game

…or maybe it’s the deep roots that outwitted honor. KBS’s baseball-melodrama series Man of Honor had a disappointing premiere week with a single-digit ratings debut, while last week’s new drama Tree With Deep Roots shot up by almost 10% this week on SBS, and seems like a sure bet to reign in this Wednesday-Thursday timeslot for the foreseeable future.

The numbers for Wednesday: Tree With Deep Roots, 18.2%. Man of Honor, 8.2%. Can’t Lose, 8.0%.

The numbers for Thursday: Tree With Deep Roots, 19.2%. Man of Honor, 9.4%. Can’t Lose, 7.8%.

With the former leader, KBS’s Princess’s Man, out of the picture along with its lower-20s ratings, essentially it looks like most of its viewers hopped the channel to SBS. Genre loyalty > broadcast station loyalty. Not surprising, considering we’re at the peak of sageuk season.

Then again, maybe the Baker King formula for excessive melodrama didn’t translate so well to its unofficial predecessor; apparently viewers are feeling that Man of Honor is basically a repeat of Baker King, from the plot turns to the characters. There’s also been comment on the obviousness of the story, although producers have assured audiences that “the real story will begin now.” Huh, you’d think they would’ve tried to make the real story begin at, yunno, the beginning.

But I wouldn’t give up on Man of Honor just yet, since Koreans love them their makjang excesses. The only thing that might attract more attention than a sageuk or a makjang is a sageuk makjang. (Now THAT I would watch. Birth secrets in the court thanks to adulterous government ministers? Identity-stealing gisaengs on a revenge mission? Someone get on that!) Plus, when Can’t Lose wraps up next week, there’ll be even more of an opening for snatching away viewers — especially if the rom-com Me Too, Flower! is still unable to get its act together and secure a new hero, while pinning their hopes on an injured Kim Jae-won recovering in time for their premiere. IN TWO WEEKS.

Me. I just finished watched ep 1&2, raw, over at Dramacrazy. Didn't understand much, so am looking forward to eng. subs.
That being said, I really liked what I saw - it looks well paced and interesting, plus I really like PMY, so it's all good. Just came off of WBDS, so need a sageuk break and won't watch Tree until all the subs are in.

The sageuk is amazing. The cinematography itself is enough to blow you away, but small things like the details, costumes, ACTING (not exactly small, but this should always be a given shouldn't it??).
It's an amazing start for a drama and I totally buy into the hype. Watch it!

I dunno...after The Princess Man...there's nothing out there really interest me at the moment.....I am only planning to watch Poseidon to sooth my thirst of absmal.....

I wanted to watch Me To, Flower...only if KJW is back or they have someone that would really interest me, since I don't really fond of LJA as the main female lead...

The only drama I'm eagerly waiting is The Fermentation Family :)

I am not surprised Tree with Deep Roots is doing so well as it has been so good so far.

Song Joong-ki why did I doubt you? The scene in ep 2 where he held his ground against the Great King moved me to tears. So powerful!

I'm so on the sageuk bandwagon!

I love SJK but I'm really watching Tree for all the other characters; with so many good supporting actors, it's a delight to watch!

Also Jang! Hyuk! Midas totally made me a fan.

I was a little bit frightened of A Tree with Deep Roots from the teasers. Jang Hyuk (whom I loved in Thank You and really disliked in Midas) looked so fierce, and I'm not so into the scary version of Jang Hyuk. However...the first couple of episodes were very good and the child actor who shares Jang Hyuk's character did a great job of adapting some of Jang Hyuk's expressions and general affect.

finally, found someone share the same opinion, "Jang Hyuk (whom I loved in Thank You and really disliked in Midas) looked so fierce", I didn't watch all the detail, the vision is too strong for me , I rather read the book about the history instead, and I like the child actor's performance, amazing.
Ironically, MOH is a story about the looser, the circumstance is similar to real life, only few can reach the stardom, but how can they act alone without other actors, basically I appreciate all hard working actors in the tough competitive environment, hard to image how they cope with the pressure.

I had watched Tree, and it is pretty interesting. Song Joong Ki's acting is really good. Well-written, solid acting from its cast, and has a degree of intrigue. It is giving me the Da Vinci Code vibe-korean sageuk style. If it continue like the previous episodes, the ratings can go up to 30%.

Baker King was over-rated. I just do not see how a similar drama will be interesting.

hi what is "makjang" ?

0

Required fields are marked *

its basically a genre of dramas.
ie Birth Secrets, Mother-in-Law/Daughter-in-law feuds, revengeful wife's, just to name a few aspects covered in makjangs.
Examples of Dramas would be Baker King, Flames of Ambition, Temptation of Wife, etc.

Although, the stories are like extremely far fetched, exaggerated and predictable people always tune it *coughmecough*

I watched Man of Honor. *raises hand* Me, me, me!

It's cute. Despite all the woe and tragedy in episode 1 alone heaped on poor Jae In, the drama plays it light unlike in Baker King, and then takes a slightly surreal wink-wink approach to it's makjang storyline.

It even has a magical fairy beggar! I'm not kidding about that.

I find the show charming in its obviousness (which it's aware of and doesn't try to pretend otherwise) because the two leads are so charming it's a pleasure spending time with them.

I don't think MoH is as high brow as Flames of Desire, but more like a chibi version that tries to take it's makjang stupidity and maybe try a different way to present it.

Not sure if this tone can last, but for not it's really quite entertaining. But TPM has built such a rapid want of sageuks I wasn't surprised to see the mass migration over to TwDR.

I see MoH doing nice high teens ratings for it's run. If lucky it might break twenty. But no way is this thing doing anything close to Baker King numbers, which were an anomaly to begin with.

I havent watched either of them yet. Little busy with another sageuk. I totally agree with you that "Genre loyalty > broadcast station loyalty". Nothings really caught my eye after the amazing drama that was "The Princess Man" so I want to tune into another sageuk instead. And I'm not really a fan of sport-related dramas either.

In other related news I guess, I started watching Queen Seon Deok! And OMG its amazingggggggggggggg! Totally hooked needed something to quench on after TPM. And since I am in love with sageuks at the moment I heard it was the must see sageuk and it hasent proven me wrong. Amazing.

Not really a fan of Park Min Young sorry to say.

Just recently watched Baker King....I enjoyed it a lot though I don't think i would be watching this kind of plot anytime soon. BK was successessful mainly because of the actors' good performance...I guess. And I agree, it's a bit over-rated... there are few other kdramas which has the same or better story but did not received good ratings.

Sageuk makjang I would definately be up for watching! Especially if it did the twists more in a Flame of Desires style instead of an eyebrow raising "Whhhhyyyyy?" so long as it'd avoiding the sudden episode dragging and weird cut off in romance.

Considering punishments, class laws, no modern technology, medicine, etc. It would make some really heated material!

MBC should push back Me too Flower, and pick up WHAT'S UP instead. That would give KJW time to recuperate and for the production team to catch up on filming while What's Up is airing.

Meanwhile, the Song Ji Na-forgotten-drama (by everyone, but not by me) will get its chance to be on broadcast. I get to watch Lim Ju Hwan (MINE!), MBC gets to extend the premiere of Me too Flower, and KJW gets to stay on the drama and recover from surgery. It's a win-win situation for everybody! What would MB go to lose?? From the looks of it now, the ratings game wouldn't be any different if Me Too Flower premieres as scheduled.

Just my 2 cents on the matter. Still hoping.

PMY's acting performance in City Hunter is good enough for her role as Kim nana, but the main reason why City HUnter is a huge Hit in ratings its because the story itself and also Lee Min Ho..

All Park Min Young drama before CH didn't do well in ratings, then after being cast in CH she is now a household name among fans especially when she is dating LMH.

So overall LMH is a big help on PMY in terms of her rise of popularity..

I'm planning to to watch this drama, but what I anticipate to watch is next weeks premiere of A thousand day promise..

I am a really big fan of PMY so i decided to give MOH a try even though Baker King bored me 10 eps in...and MOH turned out to be a ridiculous mess of makjang and contrived emotions that i had to force myself to finish the first ep....

and then i decided to give Tree a try and omg it was amazing. it was so wonderfully acted, directed and had such beautiful cinematography!! it was better than queen seok duk!! definitely a very pleasant surprisse!!

so it only makes sense that its ratings would be so high..it is such good quality...the kind that is almost impossible to find!

that said, i do hope MOH improves as i dont want to see PMY wasted.

but Tree is amazing and I can't wait for more!!

omg, Tree with Deep Roots is so damm good, I haven't look forward to a drama this much since "GIANT". I love a drama that intelligence, detail, has depth and the entire casts from the young version to the old displays incredible acting talent. I re watch episode 1 and 2 3 times already and each time I see something I miss in my pre-excitment.

I also watch Man of Honor and I have to say it's OK, but the death of both of her parents, the driver being a coward, the partner end up with everything in the daughter grows up in a orphanage. It's has everything I hate about K-drama in 2 episodes, OD of frustration and stupidity. I have hope that it stop with episodes 1 and 2 if not the the only thing that will save "MoH" is doing something very, very, very rare and that making the lead couple be solid throughout the drama. The connection their had as teenager is the only solid storyline, they need to build on that, their need to be and remain by each other side more then the last 2 episodes, there could be no misunderstand that not clear up in the same episode and differently no separation or the famous I need to hurt and leave you to protect you. If they don['t see this now if going to fail not because Trees with Deep Roots is a better show (which it is) but because Man of Honor is not a good one.

hi i have to say i just watched the first two episodes of man of honor over the weekends, and found it to be the best korean drama i have watched in a while. The plot has enough twists in it to keep me engaged and looking forward to the next episode. The chemistry between CJM
and PMY is WAY of the chart.

And if you are a big CJM fan ( like i am), under NO circumstances your should miss this drama, as i have never seen CJM this charasmatics before, not even his performance in what up's fox could compare with this one.

His character is flawed, manly yet incredibly charming in this wear one's heart on ones sleeve kind of way, it almost as if the character was tailored for him or something. Far better than that awful, bland, one dimentional character he played on cinderella stepsister ( sorry, i know many of you are going to hate me for saying this, but the fact is i loved CJM but absolutely do not like the Ki hoon character he played, it was SO boring and wooden).

Personally i think if "man of honor" can keep up the currently quality, it will become a real winner eventually just like "the Giant" in fact, it rating has already shown sighs of climbing.

ps i am probably biased here as i never liked sageuk dramas, i could not even watch the duo despite CJM was in it, eventhough i did managed to go through cinderalla stepsister purely because CJM was in it.
